Kundhavai: *Here we go again* Now what you should do when you go in front of ArunMozhi?
Vaanathi: I will try to flirt with him.
Kundhavai: Good. Now what you should not do?
Vaanathi: *trying to process the answer*
Kundhavai: *expecting her to say something*
Vaanathi: Should not faint before the Prince
Kundhavai: Good! now go and do what I taught you.
Vaanathi prays and walks toward Arunmozhi
ArunMozhi: *Smiles seeing her*
Vaanathi: *Operation command: FAINT*
ArunMozhi: *Watched worriedly as she faints*
Kundhavai: *Whispers* I am never getting a sister-in-law.
Tumblr media
Kundhavai: *trying to teach and import all her flirting skills to Vaanathi.* Vaanthi: *trying to stay awake.*

Muzhumadhiyin Pirainilavu
Kaanchi was celebrating their prince's return. Parakesari Aditya Karikalan had slain the Rashtrakoota king Amoghavarsha and had avenged his grand uncle's death at Thakkolam. The mighty sword of the Chola kingdom was returning home in victory and if that was not a significant cause for celebration , the young tiger , Arunmozhi was hastening to Kaanchi to welcome his brother and celebrate with the people.
All of Kaanchi was rejoicing , except for one person . All of Kaanchi was rejoicing , except for her mistress. Nandini Devi was fighting a migraine and severe irritation towards her idiot in law , who left no occasion to barge in on Kaanchi and provoke Vaanathi , the little moon of Kaanchi who was sister and daughter rolled into one.
Aditya and Nandini had known that they were going to be childless. Second chances in a kaalachakkaram seldom happened without sacrifices and Soodhani had demanded that they sacrifice their progeny and vamsakulam for a chance at forgiveness and life together and they had acquiesced. Just when they had reconciled themselves to Soodhani's harsh punishment , her benevolent grace bestowed Vaanathi into their care .
Their first days had been anything but calm . Vaanathi hated anything to do with the other members of the family and had thrown a tantrum worthy of royal brat when she had been introduced into Arunmozhi's circle. Full of simmering rage and quiet sorrow , Vaanathi had done everything she could to drive the young prince away even as the grand dames of Pazhaiyarai joked about childhood love and early marriage. Caught between brother and ward , past memories and current dilemma , Aditya and Nandini had been clueless about their next steps until the distant rumbles of war shifted their base to Kaanchi.
Days at Kaanchi were anything but peaceful , but there had been a sense of security , content and peace within the fort walls . That too had ended abruptly with the arrival of Arunmozhi and his unwanted chaotic courtship of their darling. It started when Arunmozhi had requested a message from Vaanathi for her beloved uncle enroute to Eezham. Soon , messages were flying back and forth between the southern coastlines , with the prince flying into fury and panic if any of his messages went unanswered but choosing not to answer pointed questions Nandini or her husband had asked of his intentions.
When an irritated Vaanathi had resorted to single line replies , the messages had been replaced by extravagant gifts. The softest silks , whitest pearls and ivory laid combs seemed more like appeasements than symbols of affection and their arrival had only stopped when her husband had indicated to his brother that those tokens were being donated and sold off to raise money for the karungalpani of the surrounding temples.
Despite these outwardly gestures of rejection , Vaanathi seemed to have feelings for Arunmozhi and the depth of those feelings had been exposed when Nandini's maternal family had requested an appointment to appraise her of mutual affection between Kuzhali and her brother-in-law. That night , they had found Vaanathi crying out in agony and pain , waves and waves of untold misery and unspoken grief washing upon her despite the comfort of Nandini's words and assurance of Aditya's arms.
Within the safe space of their chambers , their kanmani had broken down and finally revealed about her continued and wretched existence within the Kaalachakkaram. Her unsuccessful pursuit of love , the ensuing heartbreak , the unrelenting cruelty of her husband's silences whichhad caused Vaanathi to block her heart in this life ; Arunmozhi's cryptic messages and gifts that had yet again lead her to open her heart up , only for a cruel slap to land in the form of Kuzhali's alliance. Her last attempt at evading love had failed and the heaviness of unacknowledged and unrecognized feelings caused their crescent moon unrelenting pain.
Vaanathi's revelation had left them seething and angry. It had taken Aditya and Nandini centuries of prayers for a chance at a new beginning, and here was their kin carelessly squandering away Emperumaan's benevolence and unconditional love. As Vaanathi sobbed her way to sleep that night , Nandini and Aditya made a solemn vow to give their darling reprieve from pain and guard her from the thorns of Arunmozhi's shadow.
It was this promise that was causing Nandini an unmitigated migraine. Arunmozhi was coming to Kaanchi and protocol mandated Vaanathi's presence despite their promise to guard her from heartache. Nandini was pained by Vaanathi's descent into grief and so was the object of her desire , if his sorrowful glances were proof worth going by.
Accompanied by Panchavan Mahadevi and Kuzhali , Arunmozhi had descended upon Kaanchi and had sent Vaanathi into hiding. While his handsome presence , constant cheer and overt friendliness encouraged other women to present their suit , Ponni's son continued to look for his idhaya raani , eyes gazing at her with deep love and longing and something akin to worship during the few glimpses he had of her at the temple each morning.
Dreading yet another repeat of longing eyes and mournful gazes Nandini had confronted her brother-in-law a week later, only to be at the receiving end of a truly perplexing conversation about Sivaperuman's second chances and Kannapiraan's blessings of love interspersed by love confessions to Vaanathi and fervent denial of a relationship with Kuzhali .
Arunmozhi vowed that he loved no other than Vaanathi and blamed ignorance and suspicions for centuries of misery and mistreatment. He had begged the gods for a last chance , praying to any deity who would listen, only to be rewarded by his beloved's indifference. The sincere confession of his past mistakes and fervent assurance of Vaanathi's happiness moved Nandini enough to respond thus :
"Maithunare , kaadhal velipadutha vendiyathu. Sollal , Seyalal appattamaaga velipadutha vendiyathu. Kaadhal nambappada vendiyathu , potrapada vendiyadhu , edhuthu theriya vendiyathu . Thangilin sandhegamum , mounamum en kanmanyin idhayathai kurudakkivittana.
Samudrakumariyin ellai meeralgalukkum , panchavan deviyin elanam mirka sorkalukkum neenagal kurudagivittadhal , en kanmaniyin kaadhal oomaiyaagi vittadhu. Ungal kaadhalai appattamaaga velipaduthungal , adhu vazhiyil irukkum innal , thandagal ellavatraiyum murikkum arumarundhaaga maarum".
Arunmozhi followed her advice to the T. In the days that followed , he made a public vow to stay monogamous , in a move reminiscent of Aditya. He then negotiated a betrothal for Panchavan Mahadevi with the next unmarried prince in line to the throne , only to turn around and bequeath the said throne to Kandaradithar's line. A public rejection of Kuzhali's affection soon followed , with Arunmozhi stopping her cousin from shadowing him. In a decisive tone , much like that of her beloved husband , Arunmozhi had denied all feelings but friendship towards Kuzhali and vowed to marry Vaanathi and no other.
Her crescent moon had smiled that day. Nandini had seen such joy and love in her kanmani's countenance that it had reminded her of the beautiful moon on a Chitra Pournami night. Vaanathi's journey of love had began but had a long way to go. Centuries of hurt were seldom undone by a single gesture , but the overt glances , entwined hands and secret embraces she and Aditya had interrupted in the last few days indicated that her pseudo daughter and her idiot brother in law were well on the way of a fully healed , emotionally fulfilling journey of love.
Content and happy , Nandini sighed and leaned against the mandapam wall , only to be surrounded by her thevar's embrace and blanket of love. As she turned around to kiss his heart , his embrace tightened and she couldn't help but remark " Thevare , nam vaanathaiyin mugathai paartheera ? kaadhalin poorippil nam kuzhandhaiyin azhagu pallayiram madangu koodivitadhu allava" . Aditya hugged her tighter , sniffed her jasmine scented hair and laughingly remarked " Aam Devi , en muzhumadhiyin pirainilavu , ippothellam kollai azhagaathan therigirathu"

Thinking about how masterful the women were written in Ponniyin Selvan. Beautiful, ambitious, intelligent, self sufficient. Ugh, chefs kiss
It’s amazing to think how aggressively feminist the story and script actually is but it’s so subtly done that you’re not slapped in the face by it.
Also PERFECT performances from all the actresses

GUESS WHO’S ON THE PONNIYIN SELVAN HYPE TRAIN??
Me. I am.
I fucking love this movie already, all the actors interviews are on point, the songs and the trailer looks fucking fantastic. Man it does NOT get more Tamil than this.
Like this movie is literally like our Harry Potter in some ways. It’s like a timeless classic with fucking great characters and interesting settings. Like this do be the fairytale.
I’m so pumped for it, I hope the rest of my South Indian ppl can be hype for this movie as well, I hope it does great and paves a new interest in our stories.
So yeah since Vandiyathevan is like my favourite character, I decided fuck it and drew Karthi in a couple of stills from the song Raatchasa Maamaney. (I added the process shots as well)

THE UNION.(part 1)
Everybody in the Chola kingdom was celebrating their beloved prince wedding. Many people travelled to Thanjai to see their price wedding with the Kodumbaloor princess.Everyone was aware of the fact that the Kodumbaloor princess was destined to be with Ponniyin selvan. The palace was decorated like a bride.
Few days earlier…
The Chakravarthy and his queen Vanavan Madevi were discussing about their late elder son desire to bring them to the Golden Palace in Kanchi. They came to a conclusion to wed their youngest son and go to Kanchi. Kundavai was excited and happy as her dear brother would marry her uyir thozhi. Soon the elders discussed the marriage with Periya velar and started to arrange the wedding. Kundavai was eager to send this news to her brother and started going to his chamber. As she entered she saw him near the window. “ Thambi, what are you thinking?’’ As arulmozhi heard his akka, he replied,” Nothing, akka. Do you want to say something?” “Yes, Appa and Amma have discussed your marriage with vanathi.They-” “What? Are you sure?” he replied as he couldn't believe. “Yes, your wedding is after two weeks. And we have already started the arrangements.” “Do Vanathi know this?” He asked Kundavai. “ Velar mama have already told her about the wedding and she agreed.” Kundavai replied as she saw her brother was worried.”Arulmozhi, what happened to you? Why are you looking worried?”
“Akka, I want to talk to vanathi once!”

Since the Ponniyin Selvan book was illustrated by Maniam, there are a wealth of images to rely on for the costumes of the movie. The book itself was a historical romance and there is some liberty and a bit of imagination in the illustrations. There is a definite 50s aesthetic in the illustrations, often mirrored in the movies of the time.
There are a large number of the illustrations on the web and loads of comparison posts too. Still I felt like digging into my old posts to see how the movie’s costumes compared.
Pic 3 (of Kundavai and Vaanathi) is from a blog, the author has translated Ponniyin Selvan. The excerpts give an idea of the novel for anyone interested.
As an aside, I am disappointed that they didn’t use the ketaki flower (pic 5 of Poonguzhali) since almost all the illustrations for the character feature it.

Manoranjanaa- VanathiArunmozhi
Splash.
The crashing waves of the sea below captured Kodumbalur Ilavarasi and Arunmozhi Varmar, who were engrossed in its chilly waves, while the flames enraptured the to the heights of the skies, and the duo disappeared amidst the rising waves and blazing flame. Vaanathi was held in Arunmozhi's iron grip, hardened fingers clasped her dripping waist, and her hands rested on his shoulders and she heaved deeply, sharp breaths escaping her lips as his fingers curled and tightened around her body. Arunmozhi Varman felt his body aflame, the very presence of Vaanathi igniting flames of uncontrolled passion in him, while the Ilavarasi felt like the flowing waters of the ocean, enraptured by the piercing waves of ecstasy, her pale, white clothes clinging to her body like the second skin, but she felt Arunmozhi's skin penetrate through her layers, touching the corners of her soul.
"Ponniyin Selvare..." Her rapturous voice played like the most beautiful music ever, in his ears, while a naughty smirk laced across his lips, a flicker of the flame of his intense desire rising in his brown irises, while the water that was dripping from his forehead slipped down his face, falling on Vaanathi's sharp jaw, then drawing through her throat and to her heaving chest.
"I have not even done anything yet, Ilavarase!" Arunmozhi breathed onto her neck, pulling her closer to his chest, her heart in such a close proximity to his that their breathes and heartbeats started to align, thundering against each others's torsos.
His lips pressed slight kisses on her cheeks when the waves went up, and Vaanathi couldn't help but clutch him closer to herself, changing her tone to a pleading one, while the smirk widened on his lips.
He swiftly turned her face towards herself, brushing his lips over her eyelids then to her cheeks, finally resting on her flower-petal like lips, while her eyes widened, hands going round her back, while his other palm caressed her cheeks. Her eyes bore into his, and she finally uttered into his lips, a sharp, precise breath leaving her chest.
Veera Raaja Veera!
An (Amatuer) Attempt to bring the melody of VRV into words!

Sea of Desire (Sundara Chola x Mandhakini)
Reader discretion: This story contains mature themes and explicit content. Reader discretion is advised.
(Preview)
His warrior's hands untied the strings of her blouse with ease as if he were untying his bow. Like a feather, he slowly traced a pattern with his fingertips. Her neck hair straightened as her heartbeat fastened.
Just as he untied the strings, his hands slowly combed her hair, and his soft lips kissed the side of her neck. With a slow gasp, she felt her breath quicken, and her eyelids halfway closed as her vision started to blur with the sensation his lips were creating all over her body.
As he inhaled her jasmine-covered hair, he experienced a euphoria he had never experienced. This was not his first time with a woman; he had his fair share of them in his youth and as a prince. But with her, he felt home, passion, and the fire that burnt, which only engulfed his mind and body.
As she felt her blouse loosen away with instinct, she covered her now exposed chest, her mouth hanging open with the extreme pleasure she was feeling right now.
His muscular arms took hold of hers from behind as he whispered the words into her ear, ‘Don’t be shy, just as you engulfed my mind and soul, I will engulf all of yours as well as it is mine to devour’ He growled as he spun her around and kept her arm above her head.
Both their naked chests brush together, making them moan in the dim light inside the caves in the middle of the island where the saltwater in the sea creates magic in the air as they both look into each other eyes, and right there, nothing could separate them, nor they indent to separate anytime soon.
With that, Sundara Cholan captured the lips of the innocent flower Mandhakini as if they were nectar created by gods.
Stay Tuned!!

Marumurai
Vaanathi was an odd child , as odd as one could be, after living through the same life for thousands of years. Treading the line between non-interference with fate and active interference was a fine balancing act , and with time came practice , but even with practice Vaanathi found it difficult to disguise her interference as premonitions or signs from the divine in this life time , as she was just five years old.
Her earliest attempt to save Periappa had left him so spooked , that he had escorted her to Pazhaiyarai, wanting to find a solution for her premonitions and soothsaying. Pazhaiyarai was home , but twenty five year old Vaanathi inside her five year old physical self was terrified at the prospect of surviving the palace and its politics , without the twin shields of age and wit, not that she'd been great at survival even otherwise.
At Pazhaiyarai, Vaanathi had always felt less than when compared to other palace women. She was often called Arunmozhi's Idhaya Raani, but that epithet was one of scorn and derision. She was many things in her lifetimes : Kundavai's beloved sister; Vandhiyar's Maaya Kannan and Kodumbalur Kula Vilakku ,but not her beloved's heart and never her beloved's desire . In the beginning , she had blamed her vow for the distance in her marriage but repeated cycles of the same cursed existence had taught her otherwise.
Arunmozhi continued to live in Tanjai , with visits to Pazhaiyarai few and far between. While his initial visits made her hope, his later visits had filled her with anger , dread and misery. "En Idhaya Raani" , he'd say with derision , "Idho , en andhapurathu's raaniyai ungalidam oppadaikkiren. Neengal , dayai koornthu nam vaazhvil ivalai anumadhikka vendum" , and Vaanathi , would be left helpless even as the other woman looked at her empty self from the corner of her eyes with something akin to pity and scorn. With every wife Arunmozhi thus introduced , Vaanathi had died a little inside , until all that was left of her was a living husk filled with anger and sorrow. Try as she might to change the outcome , every life had been more of the same until this one , where she had decided to live her best life , love be damed.
As she peeped from behind her Periappa's legs , familiar yet unfamiliar faces greeted her with differing emotions. There were some new faces too , faces that she'd never seen in Pazhaiyarai , faces that seldom held joy, serenity or content , faces that reminded her of the fate that awaited her if she didn't interfere .
Aditya Anna and Nandini stood by the corner , immersed in themselves , oblivious to the world around them. Vaanathi had stared at them , until Aditya Anna had reached for her , only to lift her up and ask why she was staring at them . "Andha raani migavum azhagaaga irukkiraal " she'd said , only for Anna to respond that Nandini was his Idhaya Raani and his newly wed wife.
The Chakravarathy had laughed then and handed her over to Nandini's care and the only thing that had prevented Vaanathi from screaming bloody murder was her resolve to stay away from Arunmozhi. Even as Nandini took her from Anna's embrace , Vaanathi had wanted to turn away . Every instinct that she possessed warned her away from the Pazhuvur Paambu , but this Nandini seemed different and in her Vaanathi saw a way out of heartbreak and heartache.
The years that followed in Kaanchi were a welcome relief from constant heartache. Vaanathi grew up amongst war and chaos, but it was a very welcome change from those years in Pazhaiyarai. The Vaanathi from Kaanchi was Aditya's beloved princess and Nandini's chella kuzhandai . The childless couple had directed all their love and affection towards the orphaned Kodumbalur princess and Vaanathi had responded in kind , refusing to leave them for the comforts of Pazhaiyarai or even the company of beloved Akka. Nowadays , Akka was also a constant presence at Kaanchi. When she was not governing behind the scenes , Akka loved spending time with Vandhiyar and Vaanathi was overjoyed to have Akka's company without the looming shadows of Arunmozhi's suspicions and disinterest.
The years in Kaanchi had come to an end like all good things did. Arunmozhi was in Eezham when the conspiracy to crown Madhurantaka and imprison the other princes had come to light. Even as they were making plans to march to Tanjai, word had come of Arunmozhi's drowning and with it a sense of dread and fear.
Nandini departed for Kodiyakkarai , seeking intelligence from Thirumalai ; Anna and Malayamaan Thatha marched to Kadambur to foil the plans for a revolt ; and Akka headed to Pazhaiyarai to break the news to Paati and seek her help. With increasing trepidation , Vaanthi watched her loved ones scatter even as she wished for them to stay put and stay alive.
A missive had arrived days later. Arunmozhi had survived and was being treated for an ailment in secret . Anna , Akka and Nandini were on their way to Naagaipattinam but needed someone trustworthy to handle Arunmozhi's care in the interim. Even as her instincts warned her away , Vaanathi made her way to the viharam and submitted herself to the care of the monks and will of the Gods.
As days blended into one another ,she tended to Arunmozhi, comforting him through the periods of delirium where he cried out for his love and repented his callous actions. Even as her heart hurt with those cries, Vaanathi had been thankful. His cries had strengthened her resolve to stay away from him , even as her heart continued to fall for him.
As exhaustion of the body and heart stole upon her , Vaanathi continued to pray. She prayed for deliverance from Kaalachakkaram, she prayed for Arunmozhi to unite with his one true love , She prayed for Anna and Nandini's happiness as well as Akka and Vandhiyar's well being. Vaanathi continued to pray even as Nithra Devi stole upon her. Vaanathi continued to pray even as she slept , beggaring her happiness at the cost of other's delight and then she woke up.
Vaanathi woke up at Arunmozhi's cry , only to be crushed into his embrace seconds later. They hadn't met in this lifetime , yet Arunmozhi looked at her with those familiar eyes and a wide smile . As tears and love choked his throat, Arunmozhi spoke of unending misery through multiple lifecycles . As longing oozed from every single pore of his physical being, Arunmozhi spoke of his unending love. It didn't make things all right though : A few words of love paled in comparison to centuries of regret and Vaanathi remained unmoved even as Arunmozhi wept.
The next day , he'd beseeched her to walk by his left and his blinding smile at her acquiescence had been a balm to some of her wounds from the past. As Anna , Nandini and Akka had watched , Arunmozhi vowed to honor her , cherish her and have her but no other. As Vandhiyar had laughed , Arunmozhi called her the queen of his heart.
As Arunmozhi helped her up the elephant , to the cheers of the crowd, Vaanathi started hoping in her heart. As the elephant moved forward among the crowd , Vaanathi started hoping in her heart - she hoped for trust , she hoped for love and she hoped for a better tomorrow.
Note : I wanted to write a multiverse story featuring Vaanathi for the last couple of days and ended up writing a multiverse story that's a companion of sorts to Mudivilla Kaadhal and Oomai Vizhigal

Beautiful Reality
Tumblr media
A certain kind of comfort seemed to fill the soul of Arulmozhi as memories flooded his mind. He felt ecstatic to be back in the lush gardens of Thirunallam.
It was that naturally magical place that will always remain close to his heart.
As did his beloved queen. Vaanathi.
Which reminded him that he sought for her beloved at this moment while she seemed to play a game of hide and seek with him for the past few days or so he thought.
And here he had come searching for her, after being told by his elder sister about her whereabouts, only after much teasing.
“Oh Vennila” Arulmozhi whispered inaudibly, beholding his radiant moon who danced and twirled as the birds sang and chirped and the animals admired her.
She calmed his heart with her cool, silvery rays at the warm hours of the afternoon even as she made it skip a beat.
“Azhage!”
Arulmozhi ,making her aware of his presence as she stopped in her tracks, his loving voice making her nervous and shy all over again.
“Ilavarasae,what brings you here?”
“You don't understand, Vaanathi. Now,do you? ” Arulmozhi muttered, his strong voice more heavy with desperation and dripping with a passion that confused her.
“Pardon. What happened to you, thevare?” Vaanathi asked as she took a step back, unable to handle the scorching gaze of the prince standing very close to her.
“Don't you think we've been betrothed to each other for too long, dear?”
“That is true, thevare! But, aren't we getting married after 2 weeks?”
“Oh my beloved Vaanathi! This wait seems to be killing me.” He walked forward, closer to her as she kept stepping backwards only to realize that she was now standing at the edge of the pond and was about to lose her balance if Arulmozhi had not caught hold of her in time.
Gently carrying her to a tree,he made her rest in the shadows, adoring the love and the innocently mischievous enigma her ocean-like eyes possessed.
“Swami,someone will come–!”
“Shhh” He signaled her to calm down as he began to pour his feelings into words.
“To hear your sweet voice,to see your beautiful face every single day. To talk to you endlessly. Oh beloved,to adore you,to worship you is all this heart yearns for”
“Kannalane,to spend a lifetime with you is a dream come true.” Vaanathi declared with love and hope brimming in her soul.
Admiring the devotion in her eyes which was also mirrored in his he moved closer, cupping her face. His eyes asked her for a certain permission to move forward.
As Vaanathi blinked her eyes in approval he took her lips in a searing kiss expressing their passion through it.
They broke the kiss after what seemed like an eternity of sheer bliss,as a shy Vaanathi refused to look at the prince. Smiling and blushing all the way.
The loving and now emboldened prince made her look at him by placing a finger on her chin. Caressing her crimsoned cheeks he connected their foreheads together.
“Not a dream anymore. Yes?” The gleeful prince asked.
“It is. A beautiful reality,Mannava” The princess replied blithely.
A beautiful reality it was indeed.

Sol- Song analysis
(The first of many collabs by @thegleamingmoon and myself)
Song name : Sol
Composer : AR Rahman
Movie : Ponniyin Selvan - 1
The captivating female characters of PS have always managed to delight our hearts. One of the points to highlight in the novel as well as the movie has been the endearing bond of friendship between the Chozha princess Kundavai and the Kodumbalur princess Vaanathi, which has been beautiful portrayed in the song 'Sol',a lilting melody from the movie PS-1.
The song starts with the princesses sweetly singing and dancing in a swan shaped boat which moves merrily letting them enjoy the gentle embrace of nature. In a happy mood, these princesses sing a song, teasing each other in the names of their future lovers (who are Vanthiyadevan and Arulmozhi respectively) but what's surprising is how they predict it aptly.
Lyrics :
Kadhodu sol,kadhodu sol,
Yaarendru sol,
Yaar endru sol.
Tell me in whispers, tell me in whispers,
Tell (me) who is he,tell who is he
Perazhagan ah sol,
Kodharmugan ah sol,
Is he the handsomest of them all?
Is he tall like the highest peaks?
(Here, the former is referred to Arulmozhi Varmar since 'Perazhagan' is a title given to Raja Raja Chozhan' while Kodharmugan can be referred to Vanthiyadevan.)
Maaveerana sol,
Vaaijaalana sol
Is he the bravest of them all?
Does he have his way with words?
(Here,'Maaveeran' is most definitely Arulmozhi while 'Vaaijalan' can be none other than our Vanthiyadevan for him getting away with this talent of his is no hidden fact)
Oodathae solladi
Oor varthai sol
Oh dear don't blush away,
Tell (me) atleast a word (about him)
Kaavalan ah sol
En yevalan ah sol
Poraali ah sol
Illae ododi ah sol
Is he a guardian?
Or is he (my) messenger?
Is he a fighter,
(Or) is he the one who runs away?
[ Here, the former is most definitely Arulmozhi for he describes himself to be a 'Kaavalan' just a short while later in the movie, while the latter is Vanthiyadevan for being a messenger is his prominent role in most parts of the book as well as the movie ]
Keechu kural ah sol
Kaviarasu ah sol
Ippodhae sol
Adi ingaeye sol
Does he have a screechy/chirpy voice?
Is he the king of poets?
Tell me now oh dear,
Tell me right here.
[ ‘Keechu kural’ means a screechy voice but can also mean chirpy which is Vanthiyadevan in both the cases for both, his sometimes loud and sometimes humorous behaviour while ‘Kaviarasu' is definitely Raja Raja Chozhan for his love for poetry and for his qualities being the centre of the world of poets as well. ]
Mayaiya sol
Maayana sol
Is he an illusion?
Or is he a trickster?
[ 'Maayai' or the one who can weave illusions can be Vanthiyadevan while 'Maayan' is most definitely Arulmozhi Varmar for he is too good to be true, especially for Vaanathi. ]
Kaadhodu Sol,kaadhodu sol
Yaarendru sol,
Yaar endru sol
Tell me in whispers, tell me in whispers,
Tell (me) who is he,tell who is he?

Uyir Thozhi
The little Ilaya Pirati, much too mature for her age, was always presumed to be lonely.
As a child, children her age, were ignorant of the idea of politics that Kundavai spoke of. To them politics was ascending the throne, swearing in as the king, fighting wars and claiming other kingdoms. After all, they were children, their minds a clean canvas.
Kundavai's family had tried everything to keep her away from kingdom politics, so that she wouldn't be robbed of her childhood. But Kundavai had realised, at a very tender age that ruling a kingdom was more than just weilding swords and passing orders.
She'd see her father's face droop everytime he'd return from Kadambur. At times, till late at night, she'd here her uncles and her father arguing. Both her brothers, though very capable of protecting themselves would be given excess security, especially after their timely visit to Kadambur. Sembiyan Devi, the one who was known to utter only and only the truth, would steer away to tales as soon as Kundavai would ask her what the ministers and her father had been discussing about. She had heard her mother shushing her maids on several occasions when they came forward to deliver secrets. "Not here" she'd say, "even the walls have ears. And that too with Kundavai here..."
Kundavai had realised at a very tender age, that ruling a kingdom was a tedious task.
"There she goes again, with her exaggerated tales. Ruling must be hard to you, that is why you speak ill of it. But I? I was born to rule!" The other kids would mock her. The little Ilaya Pirati, much too mature for her age, was always presumed to be lonely. But she wasn't.
After the rest of the children had wandered away, the Kodambalur Ilavarasi would slowly perch upto Kundavai. She'd listen to her speak about her duties towards her kingdom, her views on war tactics and dharma.
Vaanathi always looked upto Kundavai, and Kundavai would take care of her as an elder sister. Kundavai had taught her to stand upto people, to speak out her opinion and to be courageous, and Vaanathi had taught her to stay true to her conscience, to let loose and to be a child at heart. Rather, one would return to being a child at heart if they were around Vaanathi.
And Kundavai was grateful. Grateful, to have a friend who remained by her side throughout. Vaanathi was one of the very few whom she wholly trusted. Only her shoulders had felt the wetness of Kundavai's tears, only her eyes had seen Kundavai flusterring, only her tongue had teased Kundavai about the Vaanar clan warrior, only her hold had calmed Kundavai. Vaanathi was a blessing to Kundavai, before she was to Arulmozhi.
The Ilaya Pirati, much too mature for her age, now had a companion, who had lightened the burden off her shoulders, had kept her sane and had reminded her to stay true to her younger self. And to heal her younger self. To heal herself.
