The Valaam Monastery is the sacred place where the iconic Valaam chants were born. The Russian Orthodox monastery is situated on Valaam, the largest island in Lake Ladoga, Karelia. This 19th-century icon features the monastery buildings, two saints, and the Son of God blessing from Heaven. Painted by an anonymous icon painter, it pays tribute to the holy place that once was the frontier of the Eastern Orthodox Church against pagans.

For those interested in Russian Orthodox choral music, the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (a Church father). Chanted by monks from the Valaam Monastery. The harmonic blending in Russian Orthodox Chant is outstanding. As a linguist, I am also interested in the use of Church Slavonic here.

A transcendental performance of Psalm 50. I don’t know the language-- it might be Georgian, since the lead singer, Father Seraphim, is from that country. Either way, the harmonisation is stunning.

Those familiar with Eastern Orthodoxy will recognise the icon above, by Andrey Rublov. His most famous work depicts the Christin doctrine of the Trinity.
