just going ahead and putting those comments in their own post (and secretly hoping someone who is better than naming swords than me will think up a good name for lord m's sword!) (and i also just like alliteration ;)

so for SURE cillian found that sword considering he was w/ lord m when he died! i love that he wanted to give it to eithne <3 guessing when they all got back to malconaire valentina was like -yoink!- that's a sword for the heir, my precious son, as you can see by this very legitimate and not at all fake signature on this document!

BUT ALSO love the idea that cillian has since -yoinked!- that sword right back and has it hidden somewhere! (i'm sure aoife would try to hide it under the floor boards if she could!) i cant imagine cassimir drags it out much? (i'm sure he has his own swords he prefers-- plus it was with the man he had a complex relationship when said man died?!)

hi, guys! here's smth absolutely no one asked for! heehee so, since we've been talking heraldry (my fav subject! alksjdfklsjdf) i wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the malconaires' heraldic devices etc? both re: the og malconaires AND valentina's formerly-royal birth fam?

i know that kate the great had mentioned asp that she envisions eithne in cool colors and esp greens? in heraldry, green is emblematic of hope, joy, and loyalty in love all of which feels v them to me! honestly, i also associate them w green a lot, too, bc they give lotsa plant and nature symbolism for me <3 but im open to any/everything!! i just thought that might be a place to start talking abt it if we're interested heehee

for valentina's fam...i tend to associate both val and cassimir w black just bc i think they both dress that way a lot hahaha (in heraldry that stands for constancy or grief which alsjdfkjsf but anyway) but yeah obv this is also just a jumping-off point for chatting abt it there're endless possibilities!

50. Writer's preference: cassimir/valentina -- "This opinion, son...Does it come from you...or is it hers?"

Eithne had asked if the servants might have a day to celebrate the feast day of the goddess Amestris. Amestris was the goddess of spring (among other things) and her feast day always fell the last day before her season. Unlike other gods and goddesses who demanded great celebrations or sacrifices, Amestris's feast day was always a simple one. It was marked as a day of relaxation and reflection before the busy planting season began.

It was no mystery why she had always been a great favorite.

Cassimir did not like for his mother to think that he was controlled by Eithne, even if this particular opinion had, in fact, come from her. He felt himself tense under the accusation. "I am master of my own opinions, mother. Do not mistake my affection for Eithne to mean that she rules my mind."

"No, of course not. I know you are not so easily manipulated as that," His mother replied, waving her wand as though the thought itself was ridiculous -- even as she accused him of that very thing. "Only ... giving the servants the day off for such an observance? Can that be practical? However are we to manage?"

"I have been assured that all essential tasks will still be taken care of." He did not feel the need to tell her that it was Eithne who had done the assuring. "Everything else shall be seen to the day before or the day after."

His mother eyes narrowed, "Well, I see you have taken care of everything ... " A pause. Cassimir knew better than to know that his mother was not so easily convinced. "However -- "

"-- It has been a great while since the servants have had any time to themselves." He interjected. This was true, but this never would have ever been something Cassimir would have advocated for. In his experience, servants never knew what to do with their idle time and managed to fill it in pursuit of their vices. While he was advocating for them all Eithne was, as always, his main aim.

"Indeed," His mother's eyes narrowed: he could tell immediately that she was displeased with him. She was not so easily fooled.

"I do so hate to disappoint you, when your heart is so clearly in the right place. But this may be dangerous, for us all. Observing Feast Day of Amestris while, in itself is harmless, it certainly would not be if Varmonts were to hear of it! It would anger them at best and be considered treason at worst! Not to mention -- while I'm certain we could get on very well without the servants for one day, what should we do should one of the princes decide to descend upon us, unannounced? We should be very unprepared to receive them. It was a lovely thought, but I do not think we can reasonably accommodate it."

Cassimir was proud and didn't especially like to concede to anybody (even his mother), but even he knew that she was right. He felt his anger rise at his defeat, but it was directed towards the Varmont princes (specifically Arthur). For it was because of them and their insistent visitations that had ultimately caused him to go back on a request that he had promised Eithne he should fulfill.

In their absence, his anger would be directed to the next servant who managed to give him even the slightest reason to be displeased with their work -- despite his declaration as their advocate only moments ago ...

Unacceptable | Brigit & Valentina

"She cannot be serious. Am I supposed to wear this the entire evening?"

Brigit still wasn't sure what was so terribly wrong with the plain brown dress she had been wearing (the color hid the mud stains on the hemline well enough, in her opinion), but Valentina had made such a fuss, stating she looked "half wild" and insisted that she change.

"It's only for a few hours," Aofie said, softly, " ... and it is rather lovely color."

It wasn't hideous. Brigit supposed she ought to be thankful for that. It was one of Sonya's old gowns that was a season old, but it had hardly been worn and looked almost new, even if a tad out of style. But Brigit hated it, all the same. It was too constrictive: she felt as though she could hardly move.

"How am I supposed to ready the horses in this? And what if something happens on the road there? I don't think I could nock an arrow, let alone shoot one."

"I don't think you are supposed to do any of those things in that dress, Brigit."

Brigit exhaled, still very much frustrated but ultimately having resigned herself to her fate. She would have faked an illness to avoid this evening all together, if she wouldn't worry so much about her sisters being at this ball without her. The thought of attending a ball held by Roderick Varmont in the palace where the Staffords had ruled for centuries made her angry -- and the fact that she was supposed to pretend to enjoy herself angrier still. But she knew Cassimir would take this opportunity to lavish his attentions upon Eithne; in addition the three Varmont princes would be swarming about all three of her sisters -- and this was not to mention the other men who would come circling.

No, she had to go. But that didn't mean she was especially happy about the idea.

Brigit descended the stairs, following her sister, to meet with the rest of the family who were all gathered in the hall waiting to depart. It had been late enough, already, when Valentina forced Brigit to change (she had fused over the appearance of her own children first, before turning her attention to the other girls), and now they were sure to be late. Brigit supposed she had that to be thankful for: the later they were, the less time they would have to spend there.

She walked directly up to Valentina, "Have I met your approval, step mother?" Brigit almost wished that she would find more fault with her -- anything to delay the evening further.

Not Another Dance | Cassandra & Valentina

It wasn't exactly how Cassandra had planned to spend part of the evening. On the contrary, she had promised herself that tonight, she would selfishly take pleasure in whatever pursuit struck her fancy (which, in reality, truly wasn't any different than any other evening). However, when she saw that Cassimir had cornered Eithne and seemed to have monopolized her attentions for more than half of the evening, she decided to take matters into her own hands, and while she had Cassimir distracted, Arthur might spend the evening with Eithne uninterrupted.

Cassandra had forced herself into their circle and hinted (with zero traces of subtly) how much she would like to dance, until Cassimir was practically forced to ask her himself.

While she was, at first, rather pleased with herself (especially as she noted that Arthur was by Eithne's side moments later), two dances later she was beginning to reconsider the decisions that had led her to this.

He wasn't a particularly horrible partner -- in fact, he danced rather well, and if he kept silent perhaps Cassandra could have borne it better. But she found everything he said to be irritating, even if he said nothing offensive to her. She had already cast him as the villain several times over, and nothing he could do would please her.

As he started to lead her in a third dance, she stopped him. "No more, my lord. You have exhausted me." In more ways than one. She hoped to be completely excused from his company, but instead he lead her from the floor to his mother who would "keep her company while he fetched them both some refreshments".

Ugh, the mother was almost as insufferable as the son. As soon as Cassimir returned, she meant to be finished with both of them for the evening.

"Lady Malconaire, you cannot fathom how pleased I am to see that you have all come to join us this evening to celebrate my dear sister. It should have not been the same, without you here." She was only truly pleased to see Sonya and her step-daughters, but she would suffer the rest of the company if that meant that they could be there.

edmund thinks valentina is pretty much the worst!!!! I do think he's polite enough to her face, so it is easier for him to sneak around and help out in messing with her, but I'm sure there's times he's just very sarcastic and passive-aggressive.

not even sure if this is meant to be an ooc thread with anyone or just some rambling of my thoughts that all stem out of me thinking "i need something for eithne beyond being sad and nice and pretty"? anyway, since its relating TO the malconaire estate & i'm realizing as i'm typing sort of the family history, here it is for everyone?!

i realize that i've been operating under the assumption that the Malconaire Estate is comparable to like an english country estate with tenants and farms and even a village of some sort with the family obviously still living in the manor/main house which may not be what the intention was?

but, continuing on the idea of a country estate style life for malconaire, clearly its gone a bit downhill since the war-- i don't know if the battle where lord m died took place ON (or near?) his landholdings but if that's the case then it could be some of the farmlands/tenant rentals/or even the village maybe? were damaged during the battle(s) an obviously valentina has had NO interest in spending her $$$ on estate improvements when she could buy herself nice things!!! but then obviously the estate is not bringing in much (any?!) money currently hence here we are.

anyway re: eithne & her role/relationship with the estate. since we've established she was meant to be her father's heir, she started learning how the estate operated with her father as soon as she was old enough-- probably starting doing things just like checking in on tenants, etc and then moving on to learning about managing the financial side of things and some knowledge about farming (i guess i've just decided they'd farm the lands?!) and really just instilling the idea that they are the caretakers of the land and the people who live there (which since i think we've established the malconaires are an old astairian family definitely harkens back to that idea of the ruling class caring for the citizens who care for the guardians!)

basically it was straight up engrained in eithne that she must carry on the responsibility of caring for malconaire and she was up for the challenge but now with this sus "will" naming cassimir the heir popping up and watching the whole thing get run into the ground of the past two years.. yeah its not great. i think she has some guilt regarding this but she knows that there isn't much she can DO to get control of the estate back (#thanksroderick) so she's been doing the best she can to try and keep some of it together. and while her sisters well being is very important to her and their safety in comfort is a big factor in her decision making for the future, feeling as if she needs to stay and take care of malconaire is a factor as well

if/when @forgottencassimir proposes, its definitely mostly for the good of the estate and all the people who still live there and depend on them for survival! even if the kindest richest most handsome man ever (who somehow has three extra castles for her sisters to live in!) showed up and proposed marriage to her, it would be very hard for her to abandon her family history and obligations to the estate for cassimir & valentina to take. i do think eithne will maybe have some conditions she will make with cassimir before the wedding which probably will ruffle valentina's feathers more than anything? (honestly step one: valentina moves into whatever version of the dowager house exists. step two: valentina gets a modest allowance, haha!) among she wants to re-employ any of the servants valentina has fired (honestly imagining that eithne does what she can to provide for them if they haven't found new jobs or left entirely!) and promote @forgottencillian to the state's steward (which in my mind was her father's plan that never got to happen because again #thanksroderick)

anyway, this is a bunch of rambling and i'm open to adapting anything of course especially regarding to WHAT malconaire estate actually is because this was all just in my head assumption nonsense, haha :)

Brigit x Cillian “This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had. Of course I’m in.”

"It's simple," said Cillian, once again holding up the tattered remnants of the Ormond standard, just as he'd done at Malconaire's last stand. "I'm going to save Diarmuid with this."

This latest of Valentina's crimes was, perhaps, the most heinous, yet. At least, when she'd abandoned the people on the river bend and later, when she'd walled herself up inside Malconaire, she hadn't been actively harming her people, but this? This couldn't be construed as anything else. When Lord Malconaire's ancient, faithful butler had finally outrun his usefulness to her, struggling with the stairs, instead of providing him a comfortable retirement, as Lord Malconaire had done with all his older servants, Valentina had decided there was one last task he might fulfill in service to her. Accusing him of thievery, she had invoked Roderick's new policy of serfdom, and sold old Diarmuid off, buying herself an ostentacious pair of emerald earrings that same day, presumably with the funds she'd received in exchange.

"You're going to...save Diarmuid with a war banner?" Brigit placed her hands on her hips. "What? Are you marching off to battle, again? I don't think you facing down an entire army alone will do Diarmuid any good, whatsoever."

Cillian's sigh was heavy. "No," he said, tersely. "I want you to ask Rosie to make this into a surcoat."

Brigit shrugged. "Is this your way of telling me you're leaving our service?"

"What? No!"

"Lord Ormond can't employ you--"

"Of course not!" blurted Cillian. "I'm going to pretend to be him!"

Brigit's lips parted, brows crouching low over her bright blue eyes. "You're what?!"

"Before you object--"

"He's dead!"

"I know! I'm the one who told you that--"

"And you'll be arrested!"

"No, I won't! Breda," he began, invoking his childhood pet name for her for the first time since she'd rejected him. "Let me explain."

Brigit folded her arms over her chest, brows arching expectantly.

Sighing, Cillian laughed despite himself and raked his hand through his hair. "It's simple. There was confusion, even here amongst Astairans before Roderick ever showed his face, as to who the true Lord of Ormond really was and, yes, its known that the Lord of Ormond died at Malconaire, I'm sure, but both of them? Who was this lord? Besides, technically the younger lord is just...missing," he shook his head. "You and I may know its not like him to just...hide away if he were alive, but how should Roderick know that? And, missing as he is...What's to keep him from resurfacing? Anyway, it's confusing and I doubt the Varmonts have made hide nor hair of any of it, anyway.

"That's where this comes in," he added, gesturing to the standard. "Proof I am who I say I am. Look at the dye on this: we can't make this shade in Malconaire. No one can, because the plant required only grows there. No one can doubt that this cloth is from Ormond, and besides this is certainly their arms, and no one can deny it."

"And its illegal for anyone else to wear it! You know Varmont's laws, Cillian: its illegal to even dress 'above' your station! Your best scenario is that he only arrests you. Worse, he could put you to work in his mines and kill you with the fumes or cut off your hands or simply behead you, if he wished! This is stupid, Cillian."

"And what's the alternative, Brigit? I allow our friend be worked to death, instead?"

She was quiet for a long moment. "Let's say they buy this hook, line, and, sinker. How does any of this benefit Diarmuid?"

Cillian arched a mischievous brow and, grinning, he reached into his pocket, drawing out a pair of ostentatious emerald earrings. "As a peer, Lord Ormond can buy out Diarmuid's contract from the Varmonts, and Valentina can't contest Lord Ormond's actions as she could if you or one of your sisters were to buy him out. Nor will it be strange for Lord Ormond to have this amount of coin in his pocket. But, again, I need your help to...sell these in exchange for coin." He held the earrings up, dangling them. They glittered green as Valentina's envy in the shining sun.

Snatching them, Brigit laid them out in her hand. "They're hideous." She shook her head. "Even if they were beautiful...Who could be heartless...to sell a man for them?"

Valetina is one of Cassimir's favorite people in the entire world and a big part of that, is that she compliments him all the time!!!! And never thinks he does anything wrong!!! And tbh that is the way to having the best relationship one can have with Cassimir, honestly???? Because even though I think Valentina does things that frustrated Cassimir (pressure him to marrying Guin, when Eithne is the obivous choice ;D), I don't think he ever really gets angry with her??? Definitely not to the extent that he does with pretty much everyone else and I think a big part of that, is that he doesn't want to ever want her to stop thinking that he's the greatest person of all time!?!??

I do think he trusts her advice in a lot of things/does whatever she says and considers her to be highly intelligent (for a woman), but yeah whenever things don't really pan out for her -- aka the estate falling into financial ruin -- he's just like "aww well she can't help it she's a woman"

He's definitely sUPER protective of her though and feels a great deal of responsibility towards her as the man of the house and tbh does want a future where he is successful and wealthy enough that she can literally live like the queen she is and not have to worry about anything!!

I do think that the other things they probably disagree on, is just her treatment of Eithne (especially since I feel like Valentina is probably harder on her now that Cassimir has decided he ~loves~ her) and he will stand up to her about that, if he catches her treating her poorly. And I do think he occasionally stands up for Sonya, too, but other times he might feel the desire to agree with her, to continue feeling like he's the most superior person ever (best bro award!) But yeah, I don't think that, even on these points, he ever gets full-blown angry with her just more serious and stern than he is otherwise.

Percy def considers the Malconaires and the Frosts to be like family!! He went to work at the palace when he was young to help support his actual family, but I feel like he ended up loosing all of them in the war and now the Malconaires/Frosts are all he has left and he's def rather protective of them!! And it makes him anxious when he has to go days and sometimes weeks w/o checking in on them.

He knows that Eithne is v capable and she has Cillian and honestly Brigit too there w/ her, but ngl he does find both Cillian and Brigit to be rash and impulsive and he kind of wishes that he'd be there to look after them more!! But since he knows how important having a position in the palace is to the resistance ++ the fact that Valentina and co are no hiring, he's gonna have to make do w/ whatever visits he can make.
