"i have crossed the face of the universe; i poison it to match my grief" is one of the rawest lines in Nona the Ninth. there's like a whole thesis in here but Varun just says it so plainly, and it's so human. because that's what Cytherea did! that's what John is doing! that's what Kiriona, in all her rage and grief and loss of everything she ever had, has fallen down the path of. that's Alecto, the fury of unceasing anger. that's the cycle of abuse!!!

Nona the Ninth Chapter 13 // Chapter 27 // John 5:4
Or: John Gaius and Varun the Eater, a comparison. I'm not saying John is a Resurrection Beast. I'm just saying he shares a soul with one

"Everyone showed us what looked like evidence to them, and when we argued back they reminded us that cows had best friends and complex social relationships."

When she's in the barracks with Ianthe-in-Naberius'body, Camilla, Pyrrha and Coronabeth, Nona lets out a scream, trying to emulate the screams she heard Judith do. But the scream is bigger than Nona anticipated, and nastier too. The room goes black, and when the light comes back Pyrrha says that "everyone with a necromantic body is down".
Knowing now that Nona is the soul of planet earth, and that the captain's screams are really Varun's, a resurrection beast, can we safely assume that Alecto will have a scream that will incapacitate necromancers and lyctors? Is that why she was put down in the first place? Or did she kill someone important during a tantrum (given the lyctors past and their attitude towards life, death and bodily autonomy, it must have been someone they cared about)?
What happened??? (Tazmuir pls come here I swear I just want to talk)

In Nona the Ninth, we find out the 7th Resurrection Beast, one of our solar system’s murdered planets, is named Varun. Among its other cryptic nonsense Varun repeats “I am made a mockery” and “I am mocked.” Well, Varuna is a very, very old Hindu god of the sky and later of the sea, and in terms of planet names that puts him closest to our seventh planet, the primordial Greek god of the sky and rains. In other words, Varun is most likely the soul...of Uranus.
Palamedes was bemoaning all the ass jokes while living under the biggest ass joke of all.

now that soul permeability is established, do you think cassy and/or g1deon will have a major effect on varun?
varun has already shown small signs of quote unquote 'infection' from cassy, because i remember that varun-through-judith laughed at palamedes lamenting sounding like he was a sixth house committee member which. y'know. is a cassy thing to do. and varun was reported to have gone dormant for a century after it ate her
do you think we'll learn more about cassy through varun, and that her motivations have bled into its own, affecting how it will approach alecto and the idea of vengeance and love?
(on a smaller level, do you think we'll learn about pyrrha's pre-res memories this way? if her knowing g-'s name is a result of memory blending, then how does he know his name?)
Did Varun eat Cassiopeia? We have a few slightly differing accounts of her death that mostly boil down to: Which would you rather be torn apart by; ten thousand feral ghosts, or one feral ghost ten thousand times the size?
But yeah, that laughter was fucking weird wasn't it?
Tumblr media
If that's Varun laying low inside Judith and getting startled into laughter, then. Damnit, I hadn't even considered that. It would be just like this series to have two ghosts playing dead in one scene; one the audience explicitly knows about, and one we don't.
Anyway, let's assume Pyrrha's account of Cassiopeia's death is the most accurate.
Tumblr media
At the volume a soul like Varun's must have, I wouldn't think we'd find out too much about one specific soul it incorporated. Unless....
I noticed something very interesting while I was searching for the above quote. "Dormant" is repeatedly used in Harrow the Ninth to describe only one thing: a lyctor's body when its soul is elsewhere. We've seen that a Resurrection Beast can also throw its soul elsewhere—into poor Judith—so .... if there's an equivalency there, where did Varun go for those hundred years after killing Cassiopeia? And what was it doing?
A planet's ghost is burning through Judith pretty quickly, but how long would it take it to burn through a lyctor? Maybe a century?

She crossed to the taped-up window, bottle and glass in hand. To Nona's awe, she twitched the blackout curtains aside—stood bathed in the hyper-blue light from the sky as Nona held her breath—and she said to the window, "Here's to Camilla Hect, yet another of devotion's casualties," and knocked back the glass. Then she said to the light, quite gently, "No, I don't blame you, man…he was always looking for things to throw himself on."
I know that a lot of people interpret this as a literal back-and-forth conversation between Pyrrha and Varun, but it's never read that way to me. Varun's not talking to Pyrrha, or if it is, not in a way she could understand. And Pyrrha's not really talking to Varun so much as she's seeing parallels between what happened with Gideon and Varun, and what's happening with Cam and Pal, and is acknowledging, to herself more than anyone else, that Gideon died because that's just the way he was, and Varun was more method than perpetrator.
