Tenth And Final In A Series . Last November, Kass @kmencher and I went to Valencia, Spain, for a three month stay. From 1991 to 2010 we had traveled extensively through Spain, but never to Valencia, the country’s third largest city. It seemed the perfect place for our first trip outside the US since the pandemic began: on the Mediterranean, good weather, great food, stunning architecture, beautiful parks, the City of Arts and Sciences, interesting neighborhoods. So last June we booked an Air B&B a few blocks from the sea in an old fishing village/neighborhood of which we knew absolutely nothing, called Cabanyal. In researching the neighborhood AFTER making the reservation, surprise of wonderful surprises, we discovered that seventy years earlier, Robert Frank had lived and photographed in Cabanyal for 5-6 months. He never strayed much more than a few blocks from his apartment near the beach, creating a brilliant body of work (no surprise there!), finally published in 2012 by Steidl in a superb book titled “Valencia 1952”, edited by Frank and Vicente Todolí. To my eye, his pictures of gypsies, fishermen, children, musicians, parades, and bullfighter wannabes, set the foundation for how he photographed The Americans. So Kass and I like to think that the spirit of Robert Frank drew us to Cabanyal. And we were definitely under his influence as we photographed there. (Although I’ve been under his influence since I first picked up a camera as a teenager.) I’ve already posted some photos from Cabanyal, but here are a few short series that if titled would be something like “The Frank Influence: Cabanyal 2022”. As always, a big hug of gratitude to the love of my life Kass for her superb and insightful editing with this series. Her pictures from Cabanyal are incredible, so please give them a look! (Frank’s book, by the way, is a visual feast, with an engaging and enlightening conversation—as text—between Vicente Todolí, Sarah Greenough, and Peter MacGill. The cover might look a little familiar, too!) (at Cabañal-Cañamelar) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb8qvPsOdlO/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Seven Heavenly Palaces was a site-specific installation, created for HangarBicocca in Milan, Italy, in 2004. This installation turned out to be one of Anselm Kiefer’s most important works today. Commissioned originally in 2004 as a temporary piece, The Seven Heavenly Palaces was transformed into a permanent installation to the delight of many Italians and art lovers. As soon as it was turned into a permanent fixture, the installation immediately revealed itself to become an irreplaceable component of Milan’s collective imagination. The 2004 towers consisted of a stratification of structural components created from reinforced lead and concrete. They were designed to symbolize the mystical experience of ascension through the seven levels of human spirituality. Over the past few years, the installation underwent a series of changes that obviously altered its original orientation, use, likability and flooring. However, in 2015, five new components were added under Vicente Todolí’s guidance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Anselm Kiefer Installation view of the exhibition The Seven Heavenly Palaces 2004-2015 Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan, Italy, 2015 (at Pirelli HangarBicocca) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0g-fQTFfPQ/?igshid=17tt9om9r7sec
