‘Frosty the Snowman’ on the Pickwick record label. An odd release I’ll say, as the first side is all chipmunks Christmas tunes apparently and the second side is a random assortment. From childrensvinyl.wordpress.com: “First half of this classic kiddie record features a Chipmunks rip off, second half is a mix of various vocalists and a spoken word rendition of A Christmas Carol.” So there that is. I come to find the Pickwick label among other things, would make and distribute ‘soundalike’ albums, wherein were heard similar but legally distinct versions of popular songs. This album is not that but I found that interesting as well. This album is just a hodgepodge of Christmas music, and while half of it is chipmunks tunes, that fact is not mentioned at all on the front or back of the album or even on the record label 😂😂 Weird one for sure! So I got a big stack of old anime soundtracks last month, just based on the way the covers looked. So now I’m gonna listen through and see how they sound and attempt to watch the anime as well! Any additional info on this would be welcome as I couldn’t find too too much! So first up we have Locke the Superman. This album art is how you say, fantastic! The music is typical of an early 80s Japanese sound I’d say: a little poppy, with an adult oriented rock sound. Some driving tracks as well to remind us that Locke is a character with super powers. I started to watch the anime on YouTube and here’s a description from the video: “A quiet, polite, lonely immortal esper about which little is known, he is called "Locke the Superman", but often denies being so. It is not known where or when he was born, and if asked, Locke will say he does not remember. It is entirely possible this is true. However, when asked by Cornelia Prim in ‘Millennium of the Witch’ which star he was from, Locke replied ‘Toa.’ He has appeared at various times throughout the history of the galaxy, either as a direct influence, an indirect influence, or a simple observer. Using his esper abilities, Locke can learn and do most things more quickly than a normal human. His power also allows him to remain eternally young, or even turn himself into a child again to be adopted by kind-hearted families It is speculated he remains youthful as an excuse not to take responsibility for whatever cause he is approached for, since no one expects youths to have such responsibilities” —- What’s on your turntable today? ‘Yuletide Disco’ by Mirror Image, 1979 on the Pickwick label. Now I didn’t know this was a Pickwick release until I noticed it after posting the Frosty the Snowman album previously.
