Epic 2013 - NAMES
In this post, I would like to talk about the meaning of the names of the characters from the movie Epic.
Tumblr media
Either people think long and hard about how they are going to name their children (or anything for that matter), while others just pick a name that they like without looking any further.
Names are especially important in stories like books and movies.
While in the real world you can have 6 girls named Olivia in the classroom (something that really happened to me), writers can give every character in their story a different name to avoid confusion.
It can be as simple as ''This character is from Japan. Let's give him a Japanese name.'' or ''My movie takes place in the 80s in the US let's give characters names that were popular at the time.''
Sometimes names can give you an insight into what is character's personality, talent, etc. Some are more subtle than others. (Dr Evil or Dr Doom)
Tumblr media
Let me start by saying this, names in Epic are all over the place. Let's get the simple ones out of the way.
Susan comes from Persian and it means lily flower. In modern Hebrew this also means rose and a flower in general. It's a standard name for the setting and the time period, modern times (the 2010s) somewhere in North America.
Professor Radcliffe Bomba, his title is supposed to explain how he knows all this ‘’scientific’’ stuff. Bomba means bomb in most Slavic languages. It's supposed to showcase how wacky, clumsy and does things that are detrimental to his own safety. Radcliffe derives from the place-name Radcliffe meaning “red cliff.” I didn't even know he had a name but fandom has spoken and it won't kill me to include it.
Mary Katherine is named after the daughter of the author of the book the movie is based on. Mary means Star of the sea/Drop of the sea ; Bitterness; Beloved. Meanwhile, Katherine means pure. Mary Catherine is a name that signifies a freedom-loving and free-spirited individual.
Bufo is just an American bull frog. Bufo is a genus of true toads in the amphibian family Bufonidae. Bull + Frog = Bufo
Grub and Mub. I put them together because they're a comical duo and that's why their names rhyme. Common thing. Grub is the larva of an insect. To grub is to dig or poke about in the soil. I couldn't find what Mub means, just a bunch of acronyms to stuff. Their names are supposed to sound funny and disgusting.
Nim Galuu is weird. Nim is a game in which two players alternately take one or more objects from one of a number of heaps, each trying to take, or to compel the other to take, the last remaining object. Galuu means to enter and the main characters go into a tree to meet him and even deeper into the tree to see the scrolls. Also, Nim reminds me of The Secret of NIMH. It's probably just a coincidence.
Then there's a bunch of other characters that are just names of the species/plant they're based on. Dandelion, Pinecone, Stickman, Marigold Girl, etc.
Now we get to the interesting names!
Nod, in Biblical Names the meaning of the name Nod is: Vagabond, fugitive'. At first, I thought his name, Nod, is referring to the action of nodding, agreeing with someone. Because he's a rebel, his not doing what he's told, so he's not nodding. Irony! Him being a vagabond or fugitive shows in his concept art a lot more. In the movie, he deserts the army for like 5 minutes. I'm going to go into detail about it in another post.
Ronin, is  a wandering samurai who had no lord or master. This goes with the samurai-inspired design of the Leafman. Tara is the master that he lost. Again, not executed to its fullest potential. Also, there's a huge difference between a ronin and a samurai. Many times when movies portray samurais or cowboys they're more like ronins.
Tara, in South Asia, such as India and Nepal, Tara is a word originating from Sanskrit, meaning star, and it symbolizes the light of the soul. Tara is the soul of the forest.
Mandrake, a Mediterranean plant of the nightshade family, with a forked fleshy root that supposedly resembles the human form and which was formerly used in herbal medicine and magic. It was alleged to shriek when pulled from the ground. Mandrake lets out a loud shriek to alarm his army.
Dagda, (Celtic: “Good God”) also called Eochaid Ollathair (“Eochaid the All-Father”), or In Ruad Ro-fhessa (“Red [or Mighty] One of Great Wisdom”), in Celtic religion, one of the leaders of a mythological Irish people, the Tuatha Dé Danann (“People of the Goddess Danu”). Highly skilled and wise beyond measure, he was not only the god of life and death, but of seasons, agriculture, fertility, magic, and druidry as well. There is so much lore behind this guy's name. He had so much potential! I'm going to rant about it in another post.
I think the naming system really shows the problems with this movie. It's all over the place and there's just too much.
Inspiration from the Bible, Slavic countries, Japan, India, Scotland, Ireland, and many more.
Tumblr media
There are so many things that nothing gets enough focus. We got:
Romance
Tara and Ronin
MK and Nod
Mub has a crush on MK
Parent-child relationship
Ronin and Nod's father-son relationship
Mandrake and Dagda's father-son relationship
MK and her father's relationship
Deaths
Nod grieving over his dad
Mandrake grieving over his son
Ronin grieving Tara
Ronin grieving Nod's father, his friend
MK grieving over her mother
Magic
Plant manipulation
Shrinking and biggering people
The Rot
Anything involving this stupid bud
Resurrection?
Dark Prince?
Scrolls in the oldest tree
Other stuff
Nod not following orders and not being part of the team
Bird racing
Gambling? Some criminal stuff
Random song number
Shenanigans with the dog
MK's parents being divorced
MK running away from home
Believing in what you can't see
WAR!
Queen dying and finding her successor
Pointless fight with a mouse
Grub wants to become a Leafman
The people behind this project wanted to make this movie awesome, deep and mature but they wanted too much too fast.
Nothing gets properly set up. The creators had all those cool backstories for the characters but we don't get to see them. The movie throws us into the middle of the action. It feels like we missed a previous movie. This movie should've been a trilogy and it shows.

My D&D Campaigns
Since I'll likely most definitely be posting about my D&D campaigns and characters a fair bit, I figured I'd throw a post together about them so that anyone who decides this dumpster fire of a blog is worth reading has a clue what I'm going on (and on) about.
So here we go! Fair warning, some spoilers ahead for two official modules.
Curse of Strahd / Nimalia Nimalia, a 200+ Wood Elf Druid (Circle of Stars). Her clan has been at odds with the town of Daggerford forever, so she has to suck it up and make nice when a bunch of human and elvish kids go missing. She meets the other PCs at the temple, they agree to help her investigate a lead, and it's been all downhill from there.

Since coming to Barovia, Nim has been nearly killed several times (one which earned her the attention of a Dark Power known as the Evening Glory), found out another PC, Theodora, is her great-great-granddaughter, boned Rahadin several times, and been turned into a werewolf. I also recently found out that Ismark is the reincarnation of her human husband that she abandoned forever ago. He and their daughter tried to find her and wound up trapped in Barovia. Who knows if Nim will ever figure this out though because she gave up the memory of him in order to reconsecrate one of the fanes. So that's absolutely heart-breaking.
We started in December of 2021 and are closing in on the finale (maybe. we do a lot of roleplaying - on more than one occasion we spent an entire session in one room)!

Descent Into Avernus / Teya > Kallan > Tyshara > Kallan again Technically I had three characters throughout this campaign, but two of them were the same (sort of), and those are the two I'm going to gush about most. My Divination Wizard, Tyshara, might get an honorable mention here and there, but this was not the campaign for her. We tried, girlie.
I started the campaign with Teya Amell, an early twenties Aasimar Paladin of Ilmater. Her family is part of the nobility of Baldur's Gate, and her father spent her whole life leveraging the fact that she's angelic to Get Places. She was a high-ranking member of the city's guard (because of her family name, not actual ability). She died during a fight in the secret sewer shrine? to the Dead Three, and that's how Kallan was brought into the game. Kallan's soul was forced into Teya's body by Bane. Kallan has no memories of a life before joining Teya and Feels Bad about stealing her body.
Tumblr media
(art by anotherliz.art on IG)
She died outside the gates of the High Hall in Hellturel (stabbed by her Not Boyfriend, another PC, that had been charmed by a scary red lady), which is how Tyshara got thrown into the mix, but before that she had a lot of conflicted feelings about things. She even went to Teya's funeral! Towards the end of the campaign she was brought back by Krull, a tortle cleric of Tiamat, and allowed to finish the quest with the party under the agreement that she would then serve Tiamat for the rest of her life. Joke's on him though because Bane overrules Tiamat and he's got dibs on her soul. We just finished this campaign, so I'll probably have a whole big write up about it at some point.
We actually just finished this campaign after a little over two years, but I still fully plan on talking about it.
Unnamed Homebrew Campaign / Primrose My Monday night group is abandoning official modules and heading into our DM's homebrew world! I'm waiting until our DM gives us the player primer he's working on to figure out more of the details, BUT my character is a Primrose (real name currently Karisha Peveki but may change depending on if it's lore-friendly) a late 20's Tiefling Bard who's incredibly shy and anxious. She is an accomplished poet with a reverse pseudonym - she first published under her real name, wanting to prove herself to her family, but when she Made It she realized she absolutely does not want the attention (mostly), so she adopted the name Primrose. She also likes to dive into her cups.
We'll be starting this campaign in early November!
I don't have any art of her yet, but here's her HF mini!

All Will Be One Draft Booster Challenge
I like to make a custom booster pack the corresponds with every set I can. I’m a huge fan of phyrexia, poison, and counter-based mechanics so this set was really fun to work with.
Very long post ahead. Be warned.
Rare
Tumblr media
Unrelenting Nim BB
Creature- Phyrexian Zombie
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, put an oil counter on it.
Oil counters remain on ~ as it moves to any zone other than a player’s hand or library.
BB, Remove an oil counter from ~: Return it from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.
3/2
Art link
After doing these booster packs for a while, I feel I’ve gotten quite good at exploring design space “within the box” so to speak, stuff that’s cool but stays well within the normal bounds. And I do think that’s a good skill to have, but I’ve been wanting to stretch my design muscles for more novel space lately, and this is my attempt at that. There’s only been one card to have an ability like this before, and it used it in a very simple way. [[Skullbriar]] just wants you to stack counters on itself, while this wants you to use them as a resource. If you can kill it before your opponent gets oil counters on it, it’s gone for good, but if they can get a few hits in you may be in for a rough time dealing with this. Maybe the logistical issues are too much here, but I think it’s space worth exploring at the very least.
Uncommons
Tumblr media
Blightspark Tender 2R
Creature- Phyrexian Warrior
~ enters the battlefield with two oil counters on it.
Whenever a permanent with one or more oil counters on it is put into a graveyard, ~ deals that much damage to target player or planeswalker
3/2
Art link
It’s a shame to see oil counters go to waste when creatures die. This started as an oil-specific [[ozolith]], but I didn’t like where that design was ending up so instead I had it doll out damage if your oily friends die tragically young.
Tumblr media
Glistener Elite G
Creature- Phyrexian Elf Warrior
Corrupted- ~ has toxic 3 as long as an opponent has three or more poison counters. Otherwise, it has toxic 1.
1/1
Art link
Green didn’t really get much corrupted in the set, but that’s cause corrupted is normally used as a bridge between poison decks and nonpoison decks while green is the color that’s the most all-in on killing people with poison. This is an all-in kind of card; your reward for poisoning your opponent is getting even better at poisoning them. So I think it’s fine.
Tumblr media
Conversion Engine 4
Artifact
At the beginning of your end step, if you put a counter on a permanent and/or player this turn, draw a card.
Art link
Like I said in the intro, I love counter shenanigans so this card is good for all kinds of funky counter decks. It works in +1/+1 counters, super friends, saga tribal, wherever really. In this limited environment, it can really pop off.
Commons
Tumblr media
Hexgold Bracers 2W
Artifact- Equipment
Flash
For Mirrodin!
Equipped creature has first strike.
Equip 1W
Art link
I’m kinda shocked we didn’t get a for mirrodin equipment with flash. I used first strike as a keyword here, cause often the play pattern with a flash for mirrodin card would be to flash in a blocker, then use it as a normal equipment. Here, the token’s a bit more likely to survive.
Tumblr media
Norn’s Reclamation
Instant
Choose target artifact you control or artifact card in your graveyard. Return it to its owner’s hand.
Art link
I wanted a cheap way to reuse for mirrodin cards to get new tokens. After a couple iterations, this is what I came up with that I liked best.
Tumblr media
Porcelain Elite W
Creature- Phyrexian Cleric
Toxic 1
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, you gain 1 life for each poison counter that player has.
1/2
Art link
This fills a similar role to corrupted in forming a bridge between poison decks and nonpoison decks. It gives you a reason to try and build up poison on your opponent even if you plan to kill them through damage, and if you can get some poison wins in sometimes then hey all the better.
Tumblr media
Gixian Infiltrator 2U
Creature- Phyrexian Rogue
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.
Corrupted- 1U: ~ can’t be blocked this turn. Activate only if an opponent has three or more poison counters.
2/2
Art link
Blue isn’t the most corrupted-focused color, but it gets a little bit and I had a lot going on with white and black and I wanted a more even color distribution, so it felt like the best choice. This is definitely a card you’d be okay playing even if you don’t expect to be able to get corrupted on all the time, but if you can it gets much better. Pretty good for the UB poison controlly deck.
Tumblr media
Induce Coma 1U
Instant
Tap target artifact or creature and put a stun counter on it.
Proliferate.
Art link
I love stun counters. I was the one who predicted them beforehand, if you remember that. I was really looking forward to proliferating some stun counters, and while I can see why they went the route they did of not including them I wanted to anyway. This is a card I just think should exist. A stun counter card that works really well with other stun counter cards.
Tumblr media
Affliction Herald 4BB
Creature- Phyrexian Horror
This spell costs X less to cast where X is the total toxic value of creatures you control.
Toxic 2
5/4
Art link
Green tends to go big with toxic, having creatures with bigger toxic numbers, while white goes wide with lots of creatures with small toxic numbers. Black is in the middle. I thought a card like this, that wanted you to have a lot of toxic but doesn’t care how many creatures it’s spread out over would be a good fit.
Tumblr media
Pollute Thoughts 2B
Sorcery
Target player discards two cards. If that player discarded fewer than two nonland cards this way, they get a number of poison counters equal to the difference.
Art link
Honestly, more than anything else, I like the wording I did here, that covers cases both where they don’t have enough cards in hand and when they discard lands. On discard spells like this, I like to add riders encouraging discarding nonlands since usually discarding lands is the default.
Tumblr media
Furnace Blade R
Artifact- Equipment
Whenever equipped creature attacks, you may have it get your choice of +1/-1, +2/-2, or +3/-3 until end of turn.
Equip R
Art link
This started out as a design using oil counters, but that design had some issues and I like to have some cards in the pack that still feel like the set without using set mechanics, so I ended up changing it to this design. I liked the idea of an equipment giving a +X/-X bonus, but if it was too big it severely limited what creatures you could actually use with it and if it was too small there was no point, so I settled on this flexible design that I quite like.
Tumblr media
Predatory Form 3G
Enchantment- Aura
Enchant artifact or creature
When ~ enters the battlefield, put three oil counters on enchanted permanent.
Remove an oil counter from enchanted permanent. It becomes a 4/4 Phyrexian Beast creature until end of turn.
Art link
I wanted an enchantment in the pack for some diversity of card types, and I wanted a common design that uses oil counters, and the only slot I had left was green, so this seemed like a great way to throw those ideas all together.
Tumblr media
Mitecoil Engine 3
Artifact Creature- Phyrexian Mite
Toxic 2
~ can't block.
When ~ dies, create two 1/1 colorless Phyrexian Mite creature tokens with "This creature can't block".
2/2
Art link
Wurmcoil engine is a popular card, so a callback to it seemed like a neat idea, and I liked the idea of the callback having toxic 2 and dying into two toxic 1 creatures to make it match the set. White is the main color for mite tokens, but it doesn't get any toxic 2, so colorless makes the most sense which works well for the callback as well.

Came across these headcanons that I’d written post the finale because I refused to accept the show ending like that. I refuse to believe that after everything they’ve gone through, Cha Young and Vincenzo cannot be together. Sorry PJB, but that’s not happening (even if it was sorta realistic and brilliant). Anyway. This is what I’d have loved to see play out.
Homecoming
It happens on one of their game nights. Game day became game night because Cha Young often has trials at the court these days.
They’re playing Mafia again. Of course they are. And when Cha Young ends up as the Mafia, she thinks momentarily of a compliment, indulgently given over cups of Makgeolli, that maybe she truly did believe in the Mafia.
Their game is interrupted by the arrival of two of Geumga Family’s honorary members — Ahn Gi Seok and Cho Young Woon, who are lovingly welcomed with hugs and pats on the back. Because it’s not often most of the family gets to be together (most and not all, because one of them is always missing).
“Well, my old-looking hoobae and I were wondering if there’d be room for three more players at tonight’s game night…” “Yah, Ahn gun, we’ve been the ones drinking, but it seems you’re the one who is drunk,” says Mr. Tak. Upon which, Mr. Cho adds, “Ahh, you see, we brought an old friend along.”
And it is then a familiar voice greets them. “Annyeonghaseyo.”
To say that the Geumga Plaza family collectively loses it would be an understatement.
Mr. Nam is the first to tackle Vincenzo with a hug and his trademark “Byeonhosa-nim!”
Cha Young stands at the back, elated and trying to process if this is really happening, while Vincenzo gets hugged by the rest of the family. With a knowing smile, Yeon-Jin reassuringly squeezes Cha Young’s arm, while her husband gushes over Vincenzo, and others wait their turn to hug the now returned man.
When it is her turn for a hug, no one misses on how Vincenzo is the one to initiate the hug. No one even remarks on the soft look both their faces sport, or how their hug lasts a few seconds longer than the others’.
And then game night isn’t game night anymore. Over Tteokbokki and beer, Mr. Cho and Mr. Ahn reveal how they worked it all out, using their agency and the guillotine file to clear Vincenzo’s name and let him come back. On Vincenzo’s part, he still has his secret island, but he has moved his Italian family somewhere safe, and left someone very capable in charge. It’s not that he has changed his ways, no, he is still the man he was when he left. It’s just.. it was about time he returned home to his family.
The three also let the plaza people know how well Han Seo has been recovering after undergoing numerous surgeries, and how they hope he will be joining them back in Seoul after completing his rehabilitation therapy abroad. Mr. Nam wonders if that means they’ll be getting a new intern at Jipuragi sometime soon.
When Hee Soo accidentally drops her napkin and bends down to retrieve it, she catches the two lawyers holding hands under the table, while being the perfect picture of nonchalance. She smiles and doesn’t say a word.
When the family has finally finished catching up, and sleep gradually takes over them all, the group decides to disperse.
Before leaving, Mr. Lee and Yeon Jin let Vincenzo know what time his goddaughter will be awake the next day, so that he can finally meet her.
Cha Young and Vincenzo make their way to the footbridge (a place where some of their fondest memories linger still despite all the time that has passed) because there’s something Cha Young has to let him know: she might have (read: definitely has) taken over his old apartment.
It was honestly a matter of convenience, nothing else. For those days when work makes her put in longer hours, and it’s easier to sleep at the apartment rather than going back all the way home. Plus, she already had the spare key and it was easy to negotiate with Mr. Cho (who didn’t charge her a penny for the place, as if he’d dare). It had nothing to do with the fact that on days when Cha Young found herself missing him more than usual, curling up in this apartment brought her comfort. With all his things still there, sometimes it felt as if he hadn’t left.
But of course, Vincenzo already knows all this. Mr. Cho had already filled him in.
And so they make their way to the apartment 606. It still is sparsely furnished like the way it was when he lived there, but there are a few new additions. His couch has more pillows and a soft throw blanket. His living room table is littered with case files and a familiar bunny massage stick. In the kitchen there are boxes of ramen and instant coffee mix, and cartons holding makgeolli bottles. In his bathroom, there’s an extra toothbrush and a small make up bag by the sink. Bottles of shampoo and perfume and soap that smell like her now stand next to his old toiletries. It makes him smile because it feels he never left, like they’ve been living here together in this tiny apartment all this while, his world and hers mixing together. He won’t admit how many times he’s dreamt of this -- just them and the life they’ve made together.
When he enters his room, he finds half his closet space is taken over by her “emergency wardrobe”... And it seems his old Booralro sleepwear has somehow made its way to her pile of clothes. In Cha Young’s defence, despite looking silly, that silky nightshirt is ridiculously comfy, and it’d be such a shame if she let a limited edition piece of work go to waste. That she kept it because it reminds her of him remains unsaid.
The one addition Cha Young has made to the apartment that Vincenzo loves the most is in his room. Atop the dresser, next to all his lighters and Inzhagi’s bird food, are three photo frames. The first has a picture of him and his mum. The second is the portrait of the two of them with Cha Young. And the third is the picture from their fake proposal that the art gallery had emailed them. It’s funny how, despite spending all that time together, this was the only photo they had together. Vincenzo thinks it’s time they change that.
They both stand by the window, and when Inzhagi finally comes by to say hi to his old friend, Cha Young is reminded of a Shakespearean quote — Journeys end when lovers meet — because lets be real, Vincenzo’s true love is this pigeon. Vincenzo is highly offended when Inzhagi shows preference to the bird food Cha Young has laid out for him, and not the one Vincenzo has to offer. Guess Cha Young’s diligent feeding of the bird during his absence has secured her a new friend.
Given the late hour, it only makes sense that Cha Young sleep over. And traditions must be continued, so some ramyeon is made (this time it’s two servings because no matter what Cha Young says about not wanting ramyeon, Vincenzo remembers his lesson all too well) and bottles of Makgeolli are consumed.
The two wake up the next morning, all tangled up on the living room floor, in the space between the couch and the coffee table (that is now pushed aside). And despite the uncomfortable floor, it’s the soundest sleep they’ve both had in the last year and half.
But they need to wake up soon and head out. First stop coffee, a quick check up on their gold,  and then to meet his goddaughter over whom he has promised to look after. And after that, a quick stop to their old Bungeoppang stand (if it’s still there) and a drive to where their parents now rest.
This, Vincenzo thinks as he holds an asleep Cha Young in his arms, is what it means to finally be home.

I guess this is an... update post?
With the Last Iustitia Chapter now being up and posted and all that, my biggest fic project for the past *checks notes* many years has been completed? at last? It’s been almost 1.4mil words and like five years but by god i did the thing i said i was gonna do. Now you may have noticed that I haven’t really posted any art or writing on my tumblr since then and for the 0.2 of you wondering what i’m going to do next, here’s whats up:
Basically I realized I was running into a problem where A. I am trying to keep my irl professional self separate from my swtor fandom self and B. a large chunk of my art that would go into an art portfolio was swtor fanart. I’ve been trying to move anything that’s not swtor to my twitter/artstation so that I can build up an irl me portfolio that I can actually use to ya know... apply for art jobs because capitalism and trad pub doesn’t pay well and needing money to live. In terms of fanfic, I’m actively whacking myself with a cardboard tube to stop myself from writing another serious longfic because I simply don’t have the time. I want to write fic for whatever fandoms i happen to be in, but nothing long and certainly nothing even near what Iustitia was.
I do have some art projects that I want to do for swtor or Iustitia specifically, and I have a few short fic ideas kicking around in my head for that too. I dont have any idea when or if i’ll do those though. tbh in general I’ve lost a lot of the passion for swtor that I used to have years ago when i started Iustitia. There’s a couple of reasons for that: First, basically overexposure? i’ve written so much for this fandom that it feels like its drained me in a way. Second, i no longer really play the game, and even tho i was hardcore into the nim raiding scene for years outside of the story, i’ve stopped that too recently due to a variety of reasons. Three, with 7.0 being a clusterfuck of the devs flipping off their playerbase, a lot of my friends in the fandom are moving on to other games and there’s a sour note to swtor that’s been steadily growing for me for some time. Investing so much time and effort in a game with devs who have repeatedly told their fanbase that they Do Not Care about their players and Do Not Care about making a good game is... not that fun, frankly. I don’t want to give them my money or my time and I don’t think they deserve it.
I’m not leaving tumblr or becoming less active on here, in part because dang it i’ve made friends in this fandom and also cause this i will haunt this webbedsite until I die or it does. That said, I’ll probably not be posting as much swtor content as I once did in ye olden days. Its a bit bitter sweet for me that Iustitia is over, but im glad i did finish it and i dont regret any of the time or effort i put into it.
So yeah, thats whats up with me, and i hope that my reduced swtor-ness doesn’t piss people off or disappoint anyone
ヾ(•ω•`)o
