Epic 2013 - NAMES
In this post, I would like to talk about the meaning of the names of the characters from the movie Epic.
Tumblr media
Either people think long and hard about how they are going to name their children (or anything for that matter), while others just pick a name that they like without looking any further.
Names are especially important in stories like books and movies.
While in the real world you can have 6 girls named Olivia in the classroom (something that really happened to me), writers can give every character in their story a different name to avoid confusion.
It can be as simple as ''This character is from Japan. Let's give him a Japanese name.'' or ''My movie takes place in the 80s in the US let's give characters names that were popular at the time.''
Sometimes names can give you an insight into what is character's personality, talent, etc. Some are more subtle than others. (Dr Evil or Dr Doom)
Tumblr media
Let me start by saying this, names in Epic are all over the place. Let's get the simple ones out of the way.
Susan comes from Persian and it means lily flower. In modern Hebrew this also means rose and a flower in general. It's a standard name for the setting and the time period, modern times (the 2010s) somewhere in North America.
Professor Radcliffe Bomba, his title is supposed to explain how he knows all this ‘’scientific’’ stuff. Bomba means bomb in most Slavic languages. It's supposed to showcase how wacky, clumsy and does things that are detrimental to his own safety. Radcliffe derives from the place-name Radcliffe meaning “red cliff.” I didn't even know he had a name but fandom has spoken and it won't kill me to include it.
Mary Katherine is named after the daughter of the author of the book the movie is based on. Mary means Star of the sea/Drop of the sea ; Bitterness; Beloved. Meanwhile, Katherine means pure. Mary Catherine is a name that signifies a freedom-loving and free-spirited individual.
Bufo is just an American bull frog. Bufo is a genus of true toads in the amphibian family Bufonidae. Bull + Frog = Bufo
Grub and Mub. I put them together because they're a comical duo and that's why their names rhyme. Common thing. Grub is the larva of an insect. To grub is to dig or poke about in the soil. I couldn't find what Mub means, just a bunch of acronyms to stuff. Their names are supposed to sound funny and disgusting.
Nim Galuu is weird. Nim is a game in which two players alternately take one or more objects from one of a number of heaps, each trying to take, or to compel the other to take, the last remaining object. Galuu means to enter and the main characters go into a tree to meet him and even deeper into the tree to see the scrolls. Also, Nim reminds me of The Secret of NIMH. It's probably just a coincidence.
Then there's a bunch of other characters that are just names of the species/plant they're based on. Dandelion, Pinecone, Stickman, Marigold Girl, etc.
Now we get to the interesting names!
Nod, in Biblical Names the meaning of the name Nod is: Vagabond, fugitive'. At first, I thought his name, Nod, is referring to the action of nodding, agreeing with someone. Because he's a rebel, his not doing what he's told, so he's not nodding. Irony! Him being a vagabond or fugitive shows in his concept art a lot more. In the movie, he deserts the army for like 5 minutes. I'm going to go into detail about it in another post.
Ronin, is  a wandering samurai who had no lord or master. This goes with the samurai-inspired design of the Leafman. Tara is the master that he lost. Again, not executed to its fullest potential. Also, there's a huge difference between a ronin and a samurai. Many times when movies portray samurais or cowboys they're more like ronins.
Tara, in South Asia, such as India and Nepal, Tara is a word originating from Sanskrit, meaning star, and it symbolizes the light of the soul. Tara is the soul of the forest.
Mandrake, a Mediterranean plant of the nightshade family, with a forked fleshy root that supposedly resembles the human form and which was formerly used in herbal medicine and magic. It was alleged to shriek when pulled from the ground. Mandrake lets out a loud shriek to alarm his army.
Dagda, (Celtic: “Good God”) also called Eochaid Ollathair (“Eochaid the All-Father”), or In Ruad Ro-fhessa (“Red [or Mighty] One of Great Wisdom”), in Celtic religion, one of the leaders of a mythological Irish people, the Tuatha Dé Danann (“People of the Goddess Danu”). Highly skilled and wise beyond measure, he was not only the god of life and death, but of seasons, agriculture, fertility, magic, and druidry as well. There is so much lore behind this guy's name. He had so much potential! I'm going to rant about it in another post.
I think the naming system really shows the problems with this movie. It's all over the place and there's just too much.
Inspiration from the Bible, Slavic countries, Japan, India, Scotland, Ireland, and many more.
Tumblr media
There are so many things that nothing gets enough focus. We got:
Romance
Tara and Ronin
MK and Nod
Mub has a crush on MK
Parent-child relationship
Ronin and Nod's father-son relationship
Mandrake and Dagda's father-son relationship
MK and her father's relationship
Deaths
Nod grieving over his dad
Mandrake grieving over his son
Ronin grieving Tara
Ronin grieving Nod's father, his friend
MK grieving over her mother
Magic
Plant manipulation
Shrinking and biggering people
The Rot
Anything involving this stupid bud
Resurrection?
Dark Prince?
Scrolls in the oldest tree
Other stuff
Nod not following orders and not being part of the team
Bird racing
Gambling? Some criminal stuff
Random song number
Shenanigans with the dog
MK's parents being divorced
MK running away from home
Believing in what you can't see
WAR!
Queen dying and finding her successor
Pointless fight with a mouse
Grub wants to become a Leafman
The people behind this project wanted to make this movie awesome, deep and mature but they wanted too much too fast.
Nothing gets properly set up. The creators had all those cool backstories for the characters but we don't get to see them. The movie throws us into the middle of the action. It feels like we missed a previous movie. This movie should've been a trilogy and it shows.

Spring Cleaning
Platonic!Dr Bamba x Assistant!Reader
The sound of gravel hitting tires rings out, echoing off the various trees and fauna that line the sides of the backwoods road. You take another look at the directions the Professor gave you. Sighing and placing the map back in the glove box of your car, you turn the car to the left, and see a beige, stone house come into view. Parking your car, you stand and lock it, placing the keys in the satchel on your hip. You look around, hearing it's rather quiet, and wonder if perhaps you're early. Suddenly, you hear a loud crash from inside. Chuckling lightly to yourself, you step up and knock on the large wooden door. You listen, pressing your ear up to the door, but hear nothing. You knock once more, before you bang rather harshly on the wood. "Professor Bomba?" You yell. Another loud crash sounds from inside.
"Coming! Coming, j-just a sec!" A high pitched voice calls out. You hear shuffling before the door is swung open, and a rather panicked looking professor Bomba stands before you. "Uh, you alright sir?" You ask. "Oh, yeah, yeah I'm fine." He says, standing up. He jumps a little when he hears a sound behind him, and quickly grabs Ozzie, the quick little three legged pug, who is currently trying to escape. You lean to the left a little, and peering inside the dimly lit house you see paper and fallen books scattered across the floor. "Causing problems again, huh buddy?" You giggle, petting Ozzie. "So what did you need me for? It's pretty late for a call." You ask. "Uh, well originally it was for some field research but," he turns around. "Ozzie made a bit of a mess. Do you think you could help me clean up?" You nod.
Stepping into the rather dusty home, you sigh. "Y'know professor, I think the cleaning problem may be a bit bigger than Ozzie." He chuckles, rubbing his neck awkwardly. "Yeah, Mary Katherine has helped me keep the clutter in order a little, but old habits die hard." He places a small piece of paper back on a pin board. "Where do these go, exactly?" you ask. "Oh, just put them anywhere." He says, waving his hand in the other direction. You tilt your head, but sigh and put the framed image of something back on a wall. The sounds of boxes and various equipment being moved around fills the room, and after a few moments, the little corner you picked seems a bit cleaner. However, your momentary sense of accomplishment is replaced almost immediately with alarm when you see the professor struggling to carry a monitor almost 10 times his size. "Oh, geez, here let me help-" You grab the other side of the monitor, and help the professor to put the monitor on a table.
Letting out a tired exhale, and stretching from the tension in your muscles, you lean back against a shelf.
"So, how goes the research anyways? Sorry I haven't been around much, a lot of stuff to do." You say, looking down at the ground. The professor sits up, clearly excited at the mention of his work. "W-Well! Let me fill you in on what you've missed!" He scrambles to find a small book, messing up most of the cleaning you've just done. "So, as you know, after Mary Katherine's, er, M.K.'s adventure with the leaf people, I've been looking less into their balance with the environment, and focusing more on their culture." He says, pointing to a small list in his little book. "These are a series of holidays, and their correspondence with our human seasons." He says. "See, here-" He begins trailing off, explaining the various things he's discovered as of late. "And then, after the moon rises on the solstice, the cycle repeats." He finishes, a bit out of breath, but happy. "Wow, sorry I missed all that." You say, dusting off your pants as you stand up from where you were leaning. "But, I suppose there's always time for more research?" You suggest. "Oh! Of course!" He exclaims, stumbling off to get the gear ready. You chuckle, and follow, ready for another long and entertaining expedition.

MK aka Mary Katherine
Some time ago I decided to rewrite the movie ''Epic'' from 2013.
I already explained why I decided to cut out the humans and everything related to them from the plot.
To give a quick recap, the movie was too cluttered. Two stories constantly battle for space, and in the end, none of them got any good development.
I decided to focus on a magical forest and the people living in it because it's just more interesting and I got a lot of ideas for it.
But I feel sorry for abandoning human characters, so I decided to dedicate this post to explaining why their part of the story didn't work and how to fix it.
Let's start with the main heroine's design. It's a great way to get a just of her personality. From the early concept art, it looks like MK went through a lot of changes in personality. From shy and closed off to more rebellious and emo-looking.
Tumblr media
In the end, they settled on one of the most boring characters in fiction I've ever encountered.
She starts the movie off sad that her mom died. Being awkward around her father. Then she gets shrunk, the pod sticks to her, and gets dragged around from place to place by other characters so they can exposition the lore and their backstories to her (and to the audience). Together with her father, they save the forest and that rekindles their relationship, and she is somehow over her mother's death.
Let's not forget how MK actually gets wrapped into the war over the forest. And now we get to the second biggest problem with the movie, implications instead of an actual plot.
Mary Katherine apparently decided to run away almost immediately after getting to her father's home. I say ''apparently'' because she never even gets to run away or do anything else.
Her dad, Professor Bomba, gets distracted because his cameras are detecting Leafmans and Boggans fighting. He asked her if it was okay for him to go. She said yes. The next thing she does is write a note that she runs away.
I presume cause we never get to see what she actually wrote. Was she planning on staying with a friend? Would she rather be homeless than stay with her dad?
But Ozzi, the family pet pug, runs away first, so Mary goes to look for him. She finds dying Queen Tara, and her adventure begins.
Tumblr media
During the adventure, the protagonist is supposed to undergo some development. But Mary Katherine doesn’t grow as a person at all. She does grow back to her normal size but not in character.
Nim Galuu asked her, if she wants to get back home so bad then why did she leave it in the first place. The movie even left a pause there, so MK and the audience can ponder this deep question.
But it has nothing to do with anything. As previously mentioned, she didn't even get to run away, she went into the forest which is practically her backyard looking for her dog.
The message of ‘’don’t run away from home kids’' loses its meaning when the protagonist's home is right next to her and she herself is almost an adult. Is she supposed to stay inside all the time because anytime lightning can strike her?
Nim also is impressed with MK's selflessness, because ''Who would endanger their own life to help someone else's kingdom?''
Unfortunately, MK doesn't help 100% willingly. She was shrunk by Tara, against her will, because she was the closest person. If later in the movie MK was presented with the opportunity to grow back but refused so she can help then it would make sense. But as it stands, she goes with what everybody tells her to do. She doesn't know anybody or anything. Her only option to be normal again is to stick around and hope for the answer along the way.
Also, that ''someone else's kingdom'' is the forest next to her home. If she doesn't help either all the greenery on Earth will die or the general area around her home will be a wasteland.
Nim Galuu is the worst character. Even worse than the snail and the slug. They're just comedic reliefs. He is supposed to be the old, wise, and all-knowing character who teaches and helps other characters. But all his lessons have nothing to do with the story. They're pretentious and in the context of the plot pretty dumb.
Tumblr media
Back to Mary Katherine!
She is already nice and empathetic, going by her interaction with Tara. It's not like ''The Ant Bully'' where the main character learns to respect small creatures.
Well, besides Boggans. MK said she's going to come back to their home with a bug spray. She also created a Boggan plushie for Ozzi. So, when he finds any Boggans in the woods, he will most likely kill them. And it's all treated like a joke. But they're evil so it's fine. (Can you tell I don't like it?)
Besides those accidental psychopathic moments, she's boring and plane.
Her romance with Nod is boring. I used to be glad the movie doesn't do the ''we hate each other and bicker but then fall in love''. But now I wish they did. Nod gives her a ride on a caliber and then a ride on a deer. They have the '''hold me tight'' catchphrase. What can you expect when the whole story happens in just a day? At least their kiss is pretty romantic.
Professor Bomba is just your standard crazy scientist who isn't so crazy after all because he was right all along. What makes him more unique is that before he devoted his life to his research he actually got married and had a child. Again, we don't know why he and his wife split up but it's implied that his obsession become too much to handle or he was just neglectful, caring more about finding the little people.
Side note, him being right about the existence of the Leafman doesn't make it okay for him to abandon his wife and daughter.
Part of me wishes he was the one who got shrunk. He's the one that actually wants to meet them. Him interacting with everybody and asking about everything. Think Milo from the ''Atlantis: The Lost Empire''.
Tumblr media
I’m from Poland and we have an adult cartoon named ‘‘Captain Bomba’‘. It's all I can think about it when I hear his surname.
