Bamon One-Shot (somewhere post 8x02)
@bonneibennett sorry for not sending you this sooner, between all my exams and real life struggles I totally forgot about it...
I hope you like it and can find some kind of use for it. I usually don’t write fanfics and english is not my native language so excuse me if they’re any mistakes :) This is also just floating around without any context but I got the idea before 8x03 aired bc they said Sybil would find out about Bonnie’s connection to Damon and I thought that would’ve been a great opportunity to call them out on their feelings.. so yeah...
Please tell me what you think, I’m still very unsure whether I like this or not.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Well, well, look what we have here“ Bonnie would recognize Sybil‘s silky voice anywhere, she didn‘t even have to look up to see the siren enter the empty store house, so she kept her eyes steady on the man in front of her. Damon, apparently free from Sybil‘s grip for a second, quickly took a step back. A flare of horror flashed over his face when he saw the blood coming out of Bonnie‘s nose, but the second Sybil started talking to him, his eyes went back to being cold and emotionless.
“Damon“, she purred. “Didn‘t I ask you to kill Bonnie?“ “I was about to before you interrupted me“, Damon shot back. Sybil smiled. “Then why don‘t we bring her boyfriend inside so that he can watch.“ She called Enzo‘s name and he appared behind her, his glance as lifeless and cold as Damon‘s. It broke Bonnie‘s heart to see him like this, to see both of them like this. Because she knew that they didn‘t choose it, they were forced not to care, they were manipulated to do whatever that bitch wanted and it left Bonnie angry, terrified and sad. She took a small step forward and tried to reach her best friend.
“Damon“, her voice was quiet but steady. “Damon, please. Don‘t do this. If you‘re still in there somewhere, and I know you are, then I want you to listen to me: You are better than this. You care. You‘re capable of being a decent person every once in a while. Now‘s the time to prove it.“ Her hand hovered over his arm for a moment, but before she was able to touch him he jumped back, quickly, almost like he‘d burned himself. Something in Sybil‘s eyes changed, her gleeful expression was gone and replaced by something else, something that scared Bonnie even though she couldn‘t figure out why. There was a second when nobody spoke, then a smile crept upon Sybil‘s lips and an “Oh“ escaped her while her gaze flickered between Damon and Bonnie.  “I didn‘t know that.“ “Didn‘t know what?“, Bonnie asked, growing impatient. She wasn't in the mood to play Sybil's games. “I didn‘t know he cares for you too.“ It wasn‘t asked as a question. It was said as a certainty.
Suddendly Enzo moved for the first time since he came into the room. He walked a few steps towards the other three but Sybil stopped him with a movement of her hand. She didn‘t even need to look at him, he instantly obeyed and kept his distance from them. “I don‘t know why that would matter“, Damon finally said. “Oh, it matters Damon. And you know why? Because you‘ve tried to hide it from me. Even after I found out about your precious girlfriend and manipulated your thoughts, you kept your connection to Bonnie burried somewhere in that beautiful head of yours without me being able to find it. So I want to know: Why is she so important to you?“ “She‘s my best friend“, Damon answered. There was no emotion in his voice or his eyes but Bonnie noticed that he refused to look at either her or Sybil. That was probably why he didn‘t notice the siren creeping up on him, taking his head in her small hands and forcing herself into his thoughts. Bonnie had to stop herself from following her first instinct and leap towards Damon to protect him. She knew it was pointless. Now that Sybil knew her name, knew their connection, he was vulnerable and couldn‘t hide from her anymore. It only took Sybil a few seconds to get everything she needed. She started to laugh. “Oh, this is brilliant!“ The vampire yanked his head away from her, still avoiding meeting anyone‘s eyes with his. “What are you talking about?“ It was Enzo who asked that question, still standing where he was supposed to. Sybil ignored him. Her eyes layed on Damon, she seemed both amused and bothered by her discovery and when she finally answered the question, her voiced echoed through the room, way louder than before.
“You love her too.“
It felt like someone slapped Bonnie right across the face, and considering Damon‘s and Enzos‘s reaction she didn‘t seem to be the only one who was shocked. Sybil on the other hand was only warming up to this new game. “Alright Damon, time to come clean. I want you to answer all of the following questions, and I want you to answer them truthfully. Is Bonnie your best friend?“ “Yes.“ Bonnie closed her eyes. She couldn't look at either one of them. And especially not at Enzo. “Do you love her?" He didn't answer right away. “Damon", Sybil warned him. „Do you love her?" “Yes." “Would you give up your life to protect her, even if that meant never seeing Elena again?“ “Yes.“ Bonnie‘s eyes flew open, that answer was more than surprising to her. Before she could do anything but stare at Damon or even think about what that meant, Sybil had already continued her interrogation.
“Is that why you hid her from me in your mind? Because the need to protect her is that strong?“ “Yes.“ “But that‘s not all, is it?“ There was a beat. A pause. The tension was unbearable. Then, Damon said: “No.“ “So, what else is there? Do you have any regrets about your relationship with Bonnie?“ Damon moved his head and finally looked Sybil straight into the eyes. He seemed to fight with himself even though he knew he had no chance. Sybil demanded the truth. Damon had no choice but to be honest. “Yes, I do. Many of them.“ “Indeed, I can see that. So many surpressed emotions, so much history between the two of you. So much pain. There is this regret of abandoning her, the regret of hurting her, the regret of not being the man she needed you to be...“ Bonnie felt like she couldn‘t breathe. It was like there was a weight on her lungs, partly because she knew Sybil wasn‘t finished, partly because she was curious what the siren actually wanted from Damon. “Don‘t worry, guys, we‘re almost done. Just one more question. What is your biggest regret Damon? Why don‘t you tell us?" Now Damon was truly fighting, something in him blocked his answer, even if it put him through horrible mental pain. Sybil flicked her tongue. “Come on, Damon, you know you‘ve got no choice. I can make it easier for you. Enzo, darling, why don‘t you come a bit closer and make sure you hear this next bit. You‘re gonna love it.“ The siren waited for Enzo to move through the room until he was almost standing next to them. Then she turned her attention back to Damon, who was still struggeling to keep his mouth shout.
“Are you feelings for Bonnie completely platonic, Damon?“
Sybil‘s voice cut through the room like a knife, sharp, damaging, deadly even. Bonnie felt like all the warmth was suddenly sucked out of the store house and she shivered slightly. She was afraid of his answer. Afraid of what it might do to her. To them. Damon was still looking at Sybil when he said: „No.“ “Did you ever think about kissing Bonnie?“ Enzo closed his eyes, his body trembling much like Bonnie‘s but probably for a completely different reason. Damon on the other hand stood stock still. “Yes.“, he said. “More than once?“ “Yes.“ “Is that your biggest regret? Never taking a chance to move your relationship to the next level? Is regret the strongest thing you felt when you came back and saw that Bonnie fell in love with Enzo?“ “...Yes.“ Damon‘s voice was shaking now, like he was ashamed of himself and that was the moment Bonnie found her voice again and was finally able to react. “Stop“, she said and took a step towards Sybil, but the siren only laughed. “Relax, Bonnie, I‘m doing you a favour.“ She waited another few seconds but then she requested one final thing: “Damon, I want you to do what you regret most not doing. Right now.“ “No!“ Enzo tried to take another step towards Sybil, but she hissed: “Don‘t. Move.“ and he had no choice but to obey. “Stop“, Bonnie repeated, firmer this time. She may not have her magic, but she wouldn‘t let Sybil force Damon to do something he was fighting against. “I won‘t let you do this.“ “Oh honey, it‘s so sweet that you think you have say in this.“ Sybil‘s smile was cold. “Now, Damon, we all know you want it, so do it and do it now. We don‘t have all day.“ “Do what?“, Damon snapped. “I‘ve already told you. I want you to think about your biggest regret. And what you would do if you could do it all over again.“
Slowly, Damon backed away from Sybil. He briefly looked at Enzo and shrugged in an almost apologetic way. Then he turned around and for the first time since Sybil set foot in the building, he was looking at Bonnie. He walked a few steps towards her and Bonnie felt slightly intimitaded by the sudden lack of personal space. Mostly she was nervous though. She wasn‘t really sure what he‘d do next. “I got your back, just try to fight it“, she whispered but he just shook his head. “I can‘t. I’m so tired of fighting. She‘s not forcing me to do this. The way I feel for you is. I‘m sorry.“ Their eyes met and Bonnie noticed how close they already were to each other. “It‘s okay, just...“ She couldn‘t continue when she felt his hand on her right cheek. He still looked her in the eyes but it felt like he could see more. It felt like he could see straight into her soul. Bonnie‘s heart was beating so fast she was afraid it would burst any second, her mouth was dry and she was bloody shaking again. And just when she decided that she couldn‘t do this, she felt his lips on hers.
And Bonnie fell. She didn‘t think or see, she just fell. Fell into him, into his taste of bourbon and something else that she couldn‘t quite describe, something that just tasted like Damon; fell into his scent that she still remembered from wearing his shirt in the prison world; fell into his touch when he held her face between his hands and continued to kiss her, patiently, carefully, without risking anything. It wasn‘t until Bonnie opened her mouth against his when he deepened the kiss and it wasn‘t until she heard a little moan he made when she started touching him, too. Burrying her fingers in his hair, pressing her body against his until there was no space between them while their kiss got more and more passionate. She‘d forgotten about Sybil and the reason this kiss actually happened. She‘d forgotten about Enzo, her boyfriend, who was standing there watching them, she‘d forgotten about how much she could still hate him if she wanted to. All she felt was his mouth on hers and his right hand, which slowly slid down her arm until his hand found hers. There was something shy and timid about the way his fingers intertwined with hers, his uncertainty clearly sweeping through the surface, which was the complete opposite to the unapologetic way he was kissing her. It made her head spin but Bonnie didn‘t push him away. She just couldn‘t pretend anymore. She was tired of fighting this, too.
„Alright, that‘s enough.“
Sybil‘s voice seemed very quiet compared to the blood rushing through Bonnie‘s ears. So quiet that she had no problem ignoring her when she felt Damon‘s left arm grasp her round the waist, apparently entirely unaware of the situation they were in. Their mouths parted, both heavily breathing, neither of them ready to open their eyes. Bonnie felt Damon‘s forehead lightly touching hers while she held on to his face like it was the last thing she‘d ever do and, knowing Sybil would probably kill her anyway in the next few seconds, she crashed her lips against his one last time. There was no holding back, all their supressed frustration, attraction, fear and unresolved tension got set free and Bonnie realized that she might never understand how much she loved him or why or since when but it was deliberating to finally act on it. Judging from the way the kiss was intensifying, he seemed to feel the same way. His mouth was demanding something, demanding her, demanding more.
Suddenly a supernatural force yanked them apart and reality came crashing in.
„I said enough!”
Damon and Bonnie were still mere steps away from one another, trying to catch their breaths, pupils dialeted, hair messy, cheasts heaving, stunned by what just happened and mainly careful not to look at Enzo or Sybil who were still standing right next to them. Unable to take their eyes off each other, as if that could keep them in their own world for a few more moments, Bonnie noticed how the mixture of panic, confusion and hunger in Damon‘s eyes mirrored exactly what she was feeling. And there was one question floating through the air, pushing its way through the silence although none of them dared to say it out loud:
Oh shit, what now?
