Inspired by @nysscientia‘s excellent meta, I’m thinking about how the “I am your king,” line from 1x01 was not part of the early draft of the pilot script and instead that whole speech was replaced with the Odysseus monologue from 1x02, because I feel like the way it was ultimately written in the show is a really great case study into the phenomenon the linked post is discussing and it’s long-term negative effect on Flint’s plans.

In the final version of the 1x01 scene, Flint only focuses on rallying Billy against the looming threat of England (“Civilization is coming and it means to exterminate us. If we are to survive, we must unite behind our own king,”) as opposed to explaining his actual plans for Nassau’s future. No indication is given whatsoever that Flint has any end goal other than to be The King in question.

To Eleanor, however, Flint actually DOES open up quite extensively about his vision for a reformed, stable Nassau (“We could build ships to defend our shores and train new men to sail them. We could work the land, grow crops and raise cattle,”) and then adds the Odysseus monologue on top of that which ends with his declaration that all he really wants is just “to walk away from the sea and find some peace.”

Accordingly, throughout seasons 1&2, Eleanor’s support of Flint is centered around achieving something good (a stable, reformed Nassau), whereas Billy’s support of Flint is centered around preventing something bad (England’s return and subjugation). Of course, there’s a whole separate discussion to be had about how their opposite areas of focus reflect Eleanor’s assumption that she was in no danger of being hanged as a pirate vs. Billy being someone with no such luxury, but I’m mainly referring to how they view Flint himself which, although colored by their respective backgrounds, cannot be fully explained by that.

Eleanor views Flint as a trusted partner towards a mutually productive end goal because he repeatedly explains the details of that goal and his intentions to her. Billy views Flint as a necessary evil to defend the people he loves from a more powerful threat because that’s the extent to which Flint opens up to him about why his leadership should be valued.

And this is why Billy, who, considering his history, should have been the easiest person to rally to the cause in s3, is lost before it even begins. The storm and its aftermath lead him to conclude that Flint is not protecting them from anything and that his only real intent is to endlessly force them into fruitless conflict until they’re all dead (thanks, Silver). And so, with Flint making no attempt to convince him that he actually has higher goals than that, a Flint-led war against the British Empire that they were all conscripted into against their will is the last thing Billy is willing to commit himself to by that point.

#black sails #which brings us to the whole other point of Flint's constant insistence on making unilateral decisions #which wouldn't be an issue if his men trusted him which they would if they believed in his vision for the future #but they don't really have much of an opportunity to do that when he's unwilling to explain it #and it's so frustrating to watch bc i swear i could make a whole list of times when someone comes to Flint with a concern on the level that #what he really should have done is said 'I completely understand your concern and why don't we sit down and discuss it further?'#but what he says instead is something extremely dismissive (or that could be perceived that way) and that's the end of the discussion #99% of the examples coming to mind being conversations with Silver and Billy #and i'm over here banging my head against the wall like Flint!!!! My dude!!!!! Please make a fucking effort!!!!!!!#with Silver at least Flint Sort Of Tried... Eventually...#with Billy tho I have no idea what Flint was thinking #I really don’t think he would have been that hard to convince if Flint had properly explained Literally Anything #especially if he'd been willing to show Billy any respect whatsoever - that's what Billy wanted more than anything imo #and the bar was underground so i don't feel like it would have taken much #even just Flint's being willing to talk to him like a human person at all might have done the trick #it would have been So Easy for Flint to prevent all of the problems before they happened #but ig everybody's got a blind spot...#doesn't make it any less depressing tho #failure of communication is the worst kind of tragedy because it's the most preventable in hindsight #but as it stands - the conflict between Flint and Billy is the same in 4x01 as it was in the first episode #Flint is dismissive of Billy because he doesn't respect him and Billy distrusts Flint because he doesn't understand his long-term goals #and it just Didn’t Have To Be Like That...

ive talked abt this before but how fucking inspiring is flint’s s3+4 arc? s1+2 is a descent for him even at the end of s1 he’s showing suicidal tendencies (he gave up and silver had to drag him ashore) but for the whole first two seasons he’s tortured he’s cruel he doesn’t care about what damage what suffering and pain he has to inflict to get where he wants to be. ideologically even he hasn’t developed yet like in the pilot he tells billy that he intends to be a pirate king in the oncoming war. miranda’s death really just brings him down to rock bottom and we see him destroy charles town regardless of the innocents who live there. it’s a low point for him both personally and ideologically s3 opens and we see him at his absolute lowest point burning down cities and killing for no reason. he brings his men into a tempest and then into the doldrums and it’s explicitly stated that this is a reflection of his frame of mind at the time.

what brings him out of that? the solidification of his alliance with silver (the wind picks up the moment that they work together and save the crew). but crucially, that isn’t the ONE THING that brings him out of it. where does the wind take them, once they escape the doldrums? to madi’s island. and THAT is where he truly begins to come out of the depression thats been controlling him for months. he sees that a peaceful and loving community can exist in opposition to the empire, and that’s what gives him hope that the war can actually be won, that there is Something after violence and destruction and death, that peace and victory is possible after the war. and with that, with his emotional development, his ideology starts to develop too into something more compassionate and community oriented.

he genuinely respects madi and the maroons as equals in this fight! he understands that this community is literally what they are fighting for and that a victory like that against england doesn’t just require blood and violence (although it does require it) but it also requires respect and compassion! it’s so striking to me how much he prioritizes the maroons even though it would be so easy not to, how multiple times in season 4 he expresses genuine compassion for the men (once after the spanish raid, where he says get everyone to the beach, if they’re too injured to walk then you carry them, and once at skeleton island, where he’s doing his honest best to drag the men out of the water away from the guns, shouting at them to take my hand), how he goes from killing his best friend of 10 years over some money and positing himself as king of the new world to being completely ready to give up power to madi and silver (they’ll need you to lead them through it, she’s the best of them, you’re the best of us) and saying one of the most crucial and underrated lines in the whole show: i cannot believe we are so poorly made as that, incapable of surviving in the state in which we are born, grown so used to the yoke that there can be no progress without it.

Flint’s s3+4 arc is about recovering from a debilitating grief and depression, and it’s also about rediscovering a faith in humanity, a faith that we are not so poorly made as that! that we are capable of loving and peaceful communities outside of the empire’s rule! and part of that is because of silver’s support but that could only have brought him part of the way out of his depression. So much of it is because of the alliance he builds w the maroons, the solidarity he starts to champion, his friendship and ideological relationship with madi! and in this way the s4 flint is VERY different from s1 flint (even tho s1 flint is undeniably sexier) he is more compassionate he is more patient he is more trusting he has more faith in humanity and most importantly he is NO LONGER caught up in a reckless and grieving rage for thomas and miranda and he is able to move forward and find new love in silver and madi!

(interesting to note tho despite a new compassion that he shows he also shows just as much pragmatism as he always did. he kills the men when they get in his way but he also doesn’t go out of his way to kill them like he used to. consider: he could have killed hands multiple times, and never did. he could have killed billy multiple times, and never did. he never insisted on killing max, even tho he could have and who the fuck was going to stop him? rackham’s bitch ass? so he kills the men that refuse to get out of his way in the moment, like the men silver sent after him in the endgame, and he allows blood to be shed when it needs to be to serve the war, but he genuinely is not quite as violent as he was in s1, where he killed singleton and gates and that other mf under the boat because they were slight inconveniences to him, and the end of s2, when he slaughtered an entire city of people over miranda’s corpse. i think that’s an interesting thing to note because it shows that it’s not that he can’t stomach the idea of killing needlessly anymore, he’s just as capable of shedding blood as he always has been, but when he doesn’t kill its bc he’s CHOOSING not to kill, because pointless bloodshed does not align w the ideology that he’s decided to fight for anymore.)

How I feel about this character

Literally ICONIC!!! truly thee best character ever, not really my favorite character ever, but what is a fact is a fact: he is the best.

I didn’t really like him when i first started the show but oh boy if that changed, by the time i got to the half of s2 i was already like ‘if anything happens to him i AM committing murder’.

oh let me fangirl here for a minute (tho let me fangirl about black sails in general) EVERYTHING HE SAYS!!! SO ICONIC!! he hasn’t missed in a single thing ever. I get CHILLS whenever he opens his mouth and talks. Up to this day (keep in mind i watched black sails when it aired) my brain still repeats constantly epic quotes he said. “everyone is a monster to someone, since you are son convince that i’m yours i will be it”, “they took everything from us and then they called me a monster...”, “they paint the world full of shadows and then tell their children to stay close to the light, their light, their reasons, their judgments...” BRAIN GOES BRRRR (yes, i can quote black sails because i’m that type of insane)

okay, enough, i’m normal

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Obviously Thomas, they’re cute and little thing in shows have ever made me as happy as seeing them end together kdsjdsk brain goes brrr again, really black sails is the only show ever

but truly my ship for flint is silver. I don’t know i do have a soft spot for kinda enemies to very close friends to lovers. i really think they were the love story of the show, even if they were always meant to end up badly. they’re epic and sad and funny and complicated and absolutely mesmerizing. Literally watch my silverflint video, it’s about the repression and the things you cannot bring yourself to say, and knowing another person as your own self...

My non-romantic OTP for this character

A few really. I like his relationship with miranda, i know some people ship them but for me flint is gay and yes, he loves her, but not like that. they had a really interesting dynamic and i personally love her a lot, so i will always be very sad that she died, but again, it’s black sails, i really think it’s the only show with which i don’t actually get mad about the deaths cause they make sense.

I also like him with eleanor, i love how they care deeply about each other and respect each other in ways no other character does. flint really sees her as an equal and that was one of the first things that i liked about the show.

And of course his friendship with madi is EXTREMLY important for me. They truly have such an amazing dynamic. I could watch hours of them just conspiring together. That scene in s4 in which they have gotten silver back and have taken nassau back too and the three of them are talking about what to do with billy and silver says something and mady and flint look at each other: !!!!! brain goes brrrrr, ‘case they’re friends!! they respect and trust each other!!! And of course the ending when they’re both on the ship and see that the other is okay and they smile!!!! and how she leaves silver’s ass for what he did to flint: EPIC!! you go girl, so true!!!

My unpopular opinion about this character

I don’t know if i have unpopular opinions.... he’s the best and he did nothing wrong, and i think that’s a pretty common opinion.

Maybe that he’s gay?? i know some people read him as bi and i think it’s okay and valid but literally to me he’s gay and miranda is comphet.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wanted him to be friends with max. I mean i get why it couldn’t really happen, but they would have been EPIC. if they had sat down and talk for a few minutes im sure they would have fixed everything with their big gay brains and become besties, but sadly things are not always what we want to.

And of course i think he should have kissed silver but it’s okay.

How I feel about this character

I LOVE ROWENA SO MUCH!!! one of the best things supernatural ever did. Watching seasons without her now is difficult. She’s funny, smart, cute, a girlboss, interesting... literally not once has she let me down. Also her dynamic with crowley is the most fun thing they ever did, what a galaxy brain moment really.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

MARY!!! i feel like i started this thing myself and truly one of the best ideas i have had. I feel like it can be such an epic and soft love story, i really can’t get enough of them, i wish more people would be on board ‘cause i need content!! I’m not going to get now into all the reasons why they’re perfect cause this is too long already and i have made posts about this in the past, but they really are the underrated dynamic.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I love her with crowley, obviously she’s an awful mother but they are extremely funny and it adds such an interesting twist to both characters. We should have had more of them.

With tfw of course, she’s part of the family and it makes me soft 🥺

My unpopular opinion about this character

My unpopular opinion is that i don’t ship her with sam. i really don’t see it

the last season. wow. ok here we go

zach mcgowan’s name no longer being in the credits makes me kind of sad. by the end of s3 i really liked vane

they open with flint quoting the bible. love this show. also his point about the allinace of pirates he’s relying on being very tenuous is true

silver: if it makes you feel any better,

flint: ‘a little.’ lol. silver is still kind of a shit and i love him for it. i also appreciate that he and flint have a shared sense of humor

woodes rogers is so mystified why nobody has offered him assistance in capturing the pirates… it’s because they don’t like you, king! ok it’s actually way more complicated than that in that you’re going against their status quo and offering them security over freedom which makes them unlikely to trust you even if they generally agree with you and also they’re all former pirates so they still have some loyalty to their brothers on the seas etc. but not liking you personally doesn’t help

jack cares abt their legacy, anne cares abt their future… anne has figured out her identity while jack still feels insecure in his… anne isn’t willing to risk her life to avenge vane’s death while both jack and teach are willing to do really stupid things… so good so complicated i can’t even fully express all the layers of this scene

eleanor is realizing that rogers is going to take her sacrifices for granted because he doesn’t understand that they are sacrifices- and he still doesn’t respect max! and eleanor is like shit this did not turn out how i planned, this is the second relationship i’ve had with a man where he doesn’t view me as an equal only this time we’re actually fucking married and i have to deal with it maturely

rogers has fallen into the great trap of the noble cishet white man in england of this era- debt. money can be a great equalizer (allowing max to be powerful despite what england says, and rogers to be in deep shit despite his privilege).

good on eleanor for offering to use her family’s name to help him out. i may hate his guts but i respect what she’s doing here

I wonder if being around Miranda makes him think more that way? He doesn’t seem that torn usually. And it’s not really...torn either. The way such an identity is usually presented. Not even really disassociated. More like...it’s something he wants to believe is true. That he wants people to see McGraw in Flint, that he not be buried. And it’s not wholly a good/evil dynamic either, which i’m glad of. There is good, but also ungovernable temper, naivety and short sightedness in McGraw. Likewise there’s terrible anger and bloodthirst in Flint, but there’s also protectiveness, idealism and tactical genius
