Something I love about ‘Hikaru’ is how humane ‘he’ is.
Like, yeah, ‘he’ inherited that pure love ‘he’ has for Yoshiki from the real Hikaru’s last wish (either platonic or romantic, probably the real Hikaru did not have enough living time to understand it himself). But despite that, ‘Hikaru’ is not a Yandere kind of character.
‘He’ loves Yoshiki so much, and probably doesn’t know how Yoshiki loved Hikaru just as much from the corner of his mind
And ‘he’ did go out and lost ‘his’ control like a Yandere would, however, what is refreshing about ‘Hikaru’ is that ‘he’ learns.
‘He’ cherises Yoshiki, that’s all there is to it, ‘he’ cherises him for no reason, it’s an unconditional kind of love that ‘he’ has for the other boy (although we will learn the meaning of it at some point). And despite his burning feelings, ‘he’ still has the power to learn ‘his’ place. To accept that Yoshiki doesn’t see ‘him’ as Hikaru and yet to love him still.
*his pained expression when he learns ‘he’ is the reason Yoshiki suffered in silence*
This could be ‘his’ first time being a human, and doesn’t fully know how humans function. But ‘he’s humane enough to put in the effort and learn from his mistakes.
‘His’ love doesn’t make him evil. It makes ‘him’ human.

I think that the reason I like Hikaru Ga Shinda Natsu so much is because… it’s a story with queer characters. It’s not a story about queer characters. It’s not entirely about the experience of being queer, although it is deeply connected as part of their life.
It’s a story with characters that just happen to be gay and that’s what queer people wanted for years.

Yoshiki has a lot of body moles, and Hikaru has a crooked tooth, i love these design choices as they’re out of the ordinary basic, not to mention the whole kansai village accent (i love accents)
Man, I love them so much, I don’t have the words to describe how they make me feel

You know, because the first time I’ve seen Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu it was named a BL, i didn’t even question the feelings between Yoshiki and Hikaru. However, I don’t think I can purely see Yoshiki as straight, with just confused feelings about Hikaru either. I’m sure he has feelings but because of his small environment he is afraid to live up to them and accept it (remember when the gay boy was known as “sick”?) which is pretty common for queer people from small communities. (Been there done that)
Howeveeeer, about Hikaru, he’s a bit more complex.
At first I thought that “You’re bigger than me, so soon…” was spoken by Hikaru to Yoshiki, and I struggled for quite some time to understand, because in the manga they seem to be classmates, and Hikaru’s birthday is on 20th March while Yoshiki’s is on 20th April, so they couldn’t be classmates if there was a year between them.
But then, I think that’s Yoshiki telling Hikaru to stop fooling around because he’s the older one.
UPDATE: Yoshiki is older, he’s 17, Hikaru is 16.
But you see, despite this, I think Hikaru kind of always grew with this idea that he has to protect Yoshiki…
We knew already that Yoshiki’s household was quite toxic with parents that fight all the time. Even more in the latest chapter where Yoshiki says he doesn’t want to be like his father
And what we learned in this chapter, is how calming Kouhei’s presence is. (We’ve seen before that he was kind but it was too quickly to leave a lasting impression)
Look, with just his presence he cleared that darkness between the father and son, his face isn’t stern, he is smiling (i love him already)
It’s so normal that Yoshiki who grew up in a toxic household struggles with mental stress and doesn’t speak up (it took him 6 months and many sleepless nights to tell ‘Hikaru’ about his doubts), and it’s only normal for Hikaru who grew up in a safe and secure family to be a literal ray of sunshine.
So, back to the feelings. I really thought that it was love what Hikaru felt for Yoshiki, that he has those feelings. But if I think better, I’m not saying he doesn’t care for Yoshiki cuz oh god he does, he cares so much it’s his last thought, his dying wish. It’s his dying wish to… keep him company, to protect him.
Hikaru grew up with Yoshiki and he was a witness to Yoshiki’s family abuse, and I’m sure he grew up with the intention of protecting him from his family. Because he was the older one. Because his own family took good care of him, and he wanted to protect his friend and have him live a life just like his.
(I’m not saying he didn’t love Yoshiki, but maybe he died too early to tell apart his feelings. This is my conclusion since the mangaka themselves used words like “bromance” or “not entirely romantic” to describe their relationship, it’s still a question mark, and up to you to decide)
In conclusion, i didn’t make this post to tell you what to feel about them. I am just trying to understand how the author wanted to portray them, it is a complicated matter, but i see it in a beautiful way, very realistic and humanly

I am working on translating the interview with Mokmok sensei in the Kana Manga ga Sugoi and one of the questions was about the title.
Hikaru died in the winter, why is the title ‘summer’?
It is because Yoshiki accepted/learned about Hikaru’s death in summer. Also the title would’ve felt different if they used the word ‘winter’.
At least this matter is solved
