[S1E4 SPOILERS, BOOK 1 SPOILERS]
Thinking about the most recent Slarb scene in the Wingfeather show. Yknow the one. Where Slarb is bullied relentlessly, mocked, shoved around, and ridiculed. And, ofc, the violent fist fight he dukes out with Vop. They’re both half naked, damn does that scene have some 🤨📸 poses. And then ofc once he kills Vop he’s surrounded by angry Fangs. Slarb flees, and is immediately grabbed by Gnorm by his throat, and slammed into a wall. That very much doesn’t happen in the books, thus making the scene a lot more intriguing to watch. Slarb is fighting, clawing at the hand choking him out. One shot even shows Slarb’s feet kicking uselessly, just barely unable to find purchase on the floor. Then Slarb has to beg for freedom, using the only piece of information he has that’s useful, completely at Gnorm’s and the Fangs mercy. You can honest to god hear Slarb starting to lose consciousness.

Anyhow, those scenes have inspired me to make more Slarb whump, and maybe actually post it this time. Love y’all, stay safe.

I can’t focus on any of my writing again, so have a random Wingfeather Saga rant.
Okay, so listen, one of the few things I dislike about this book series is Nia and Podo’s treatment of Peet/Artham in the first book. It’s completely unnecessary and actually kind of cruel and I’mma tell you why.
Disclaimer: I actually love Nia and Podo?? Somehow Andrew Peterson made me like them despite the fact that I hate how they treated my favorite character??? How’d he do that?? This almost never happens and it’s a testament to how good a writer Andrew is.
ALRIGHT let’s get into this. Now, first off, my main issue is how for four years Nia and Podo have just. pretended they have no idea who Peet is. They have, in essence, abandoned him. Initially I can understand this. When Artham first shows up they think he’s being used by Gnag to find them or that he’s been turned to the Dark Side. This is perfectly reasonable and logical.
What is not reasonable or logical, is assuming that for FOUR WHOLE YEARS.
I could understand this line of thinking for about a year. I could understand them being cautious and worried and staying away from him (though, apparently at no point did they feel they were in enough danger to LEAVE so??? Peet was obviously never more than a moderate threat) for a year, but after that it kind of seems silly. Like, he hasn’t ratted them out, no army has shown up to take them away, he’s not working with the Fangs, why would you not like, re-evaluate his threat level? (Fun fact: they actually trusted Zouzab, a random ridgerunner who ACTUALLY ended up betraying them more than their own family member, how ‘bout that.)
Now I know what you’re gonna say, “It’s because Podo hated him.” and yes I understand that, but then what the heck is Nia’s excuse?! We see Nia stand up to Podo several times in the series and win. Why did she not reach out to Peet on her own? Like, I don’t know about you, but if my brother-in-law suddenly showed up in my town after I assumed he and my husband were dead I would have questions. I would be confused but also excited because maybe now there would be answers?? And why would Nia (who we know to be very compassionate and kind) not want to help Artham when she saw how much he was struggling? Like, he had lost his mind. I wanted to help him and I didn’t even know who he was when I first read the book. She could have AT LEAST done what Leeli suggested after Peet took her to his tree house and like, cook him a meal once and a while and patch his clothes and maybe, you know, TALK TO HIM ONCE AND A WHILE.
And just, what I find really frustrating about this is that in the second book Artham gets better so quickly after the Igibys move in with him. Like, he is obviously still struggling but he seems to be sane more and he tells the kids stuff and dances to Leeli’s music and seems more coherent. He’s obviously doing better, and he’s actually happy too. And he could have had at least three years more of this if Nia had stepped up or if Podo had actually worked on forgiving him instead of holding a grudge for NINE YEARS. Like, wholy (toothy) cow man, that’s, that’s not even healthy to hold a grudge that long. But nah, that’s not a problem, y’know, it’s not like they see Peet ALL THE TIME and Podo occasionally PUNCHES HIM IN THE FACE.
But honestly, really, the worst part in all this?
If it had been Esben, they wouldn’t have hesitated to help him.
