This is literally what we try to do, and we do get hate for it. Or when we try to include people in natural ways, we still get hate for “just throwing characters in there to check a box”. Our creative team are LGBT and we want so much rep, but we are also a horror show, that means LGBT people will be heroes, will be villains, will live, will die, but for anything that isn’t perfect and without conflict, we do get hate. It can be wildly discouraging.

Even LGBT people are afraid to create LGBT rep half the time because you fucking goblins critique things with LGBT rep so harshly that the second it does something that you personally don’t like it gets treated even worse than the shows that have absolutely no rep in them.

Demonizing every show that is earnestly trying to provide the rep we’ve been lacking is NOT THE WAY TO GET BETTER REP

Hi!! I absolutely adore your show and I just wanted to ask, for the songs you include in season 2, are they meant to be background music, or is there actual in-universe singing? I can see how the saloon songs would be in-universe, but how about solo songs like ‘lullaby’ and ‘Eleanor’?

Thank you for asking! It’s a bit of a mix! The saloon songs are definitely a thing, and since we were wonderfully sponsored by American Murder Song we decided to leave it a bit open as if those singers exist in this world. The only one that is specifically supposed to be in-world is “Lullaby” because of the sound effects in the song we wanted that to be the cart they hire for that scene. And we totally understand that. That’s why we formatted the way we did. We not only change what KIND of story we tell, but we change the INTENSITY. Some seasons will be rougher than others, and some seasons will be a bit more action with horror. Horror is a fun and wide varied genre and we have a huge range of what we can do. Every season isn’t Utopia, and every season isn’t Blackchapel, and every season isn’t The Neon Lodge. Bad things may happen to queer characters, but it’s because we are queer people wanting to see ourselves in a genre that hasn’t really had any actual representation. We want to participate in the horror which means sometimes we’re the heroes, sometimes we’re the dead, and when we die, we wanna make the deaths memorable, because that’s often what is the most memorable. When we have a list of potential deaths, not gonna lie, the queer characters that will die that season are going to get the coolest or biggest showpiece ones lol. Let the straight character get boringly written off for a change ;) (joking sort of haha)

I personally cannot stand narratives where the protagonists have literally no real chance to overcome the antagonists, everything goes exactly as the antagonist plans hook line and sinker. It’s why I can’t stand Othello. It’s just so boring and sucks out all the suspense from the plot, removes any attachment I feel to the characters, snores. And that’s my problem here.

We are a horror show, which means overcoming the bad guy isn’t always the goal. However, every season we create is wildly different. The first season we said in the beginning everyone would die. The second season is an entirely different style. Third season is also an entirely different style. That includes the level of horror that we do, how many we kill, and what the final outcome is. We give our writers the ability to do wildly different stories each time and full understand that it will be rare for a person to like all 3 seasons due to the differences. Should you choose to stick around with us, we hope you find what you seek from other seasons. Season 2 involves a team hunting down a serial killer across the old west. Season 3, which is currently airing, is cyberpunk with demons. And the only common thread we have is the cast, as well as some minor references to previous seasons as easter eggs. We definitely understand that total character death is not for everyone. It’s why we don’t do it every season. So, again, should you stick around, we hope a different season is more your interests.
