MEDUSA (Μέδουσα, meaning “guardian” or “protectress”) is a monster, a Gorgon. Classical mythology puts forth that Medusa and her two sisters (Sthenno and Euryale) are Gorgons born of the marine deities Phorcys and Ceto; while in later versions Medusa is a beautiful maiden and priestess of Athena. Because Medusa was wooed by Poseidon (or in some accounts, raped), Athena punished her and transformed her into a monster, with snakes for hair and bloodshot eyes. Eventually, she was beheaded by the hero Perseus and her head used as a weapon.
