NEW WORK
“401 Broadway” “401 Broadway” 2021,16″x 22″graphite, carbon and charcoal on paper  401 Broadway was designed by renowned architecture firm, Jardine, Hill & Murdock, and constructed in 1929-1930 — just as the Empire State Building was making its home in Herald Square. I wake up every morning and say to myself, ‘Well, I’m still in New York’. Thank you. Honestly I can not imagine living any place…

NEW WORK. . “Moving Closer to One World”, 2021, 16”x 24” graphite, carbon and charcoal. . One World Trade Center (also known as One World Trade, One WTC, and formerly Freedom Tower) is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. One WTC is the tallest building in the United States, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and the seventh-tallest in the world. The supertall structure has the same name as the North Towerof the original World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The new skyscraper stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. The building is bounded by West Street to the west, Vesey Street to the north, Fulton Street to the south, and Washington Street to the east. . #oneworldtrade #oneworldtradecenter #nyc #buildingsofnewyorkcity #sketchartist #drawingdaily #drawingeveryday #visualartist #pencildrawing #artist #art #artoftheday #graphitedrawing #cityscapes #nycartist #realism #iloveminimalart #photorealism #newyorkcityskyscapper #modernart (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVbCl1Gvq1S3SSOGT-wciqqj_5B8TdwbzdMMV40/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Repost @drawingcenter with @make_repost ・・・ We're reflecting on exhibitions from The Drawing Center archive as we continue to explore drawing from home. We'll be sharing staff members' favorite drawings, culled from the thousands of works on paper exhibited throughout our forty-year history. Lucia Zezza @club_bingo —The Drawing Center's Bookstore Manager and a practicing artist—shares her favorite drawing, a sandpaper ‘painting’ that exemplifies a largely overlooked drawing technique within the history of American folk art. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ —⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “As a practitioner of drawings that often look like paintings, I was struck by this work from the 1999 Drawing Papers catalog 'Darkness like a Dream,' which holds a small and captivating selection of what are called 'sandpaper paintings’ (a double misnomer for charcoal on a gritty marble dust surface). The precious 20-page book brings this rare technique, which has been largely overlooked in the history of American folk art, to light. Produced in the thousands during the 1800s, these drawings were fairly accessible. People of all skill levels would borrow and alter subject matter from popular print media like travelogues, and used the readymade print as a loose map to experiment with light and shade, allowing the sparkle and tooth of marble dust to shine through for luminance. In ways that emerge later on with some of my favorite Modernists like Agnes Pelton, the resulting scenes are not so much illustrations of their source material as registers of mental states; in the case of Niagara Falls, an eerie, even gothic one of perhaps personal religiosity. The sandpaper paintings are, to me, otherworldly and sometimes fantastically campy examples of the human imagination.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ —⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To read “Drawing Papers 2: Darkness Like a Dream Nineteenth-Century Sandpaper Drawings” online for free, please visit our bookstore website. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ —⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image: Unknown, "Niagara Falls, New York," date unknown. Artist/Filmmaker has an exhibition up at Pace Gallery in Chelsea, NY. The exhibit is up till October 23rd. . Robert Longo’s debut exhibition at Pace Gallery, I do fly / After summer merrily, showcases the final installment of the artist’s Destroyer Cycle, a series of never-before-seen works examining notions of American power, violence, and mythmaking pulled from the “image storm” of society’s “culture of impatience.” In this series, Longo attempts to slow things down through the venerable medium of charcoal. Centered on themes of protest, freedom, and entropy, this suite of six large-scale charcoal drawings reflects on the turbulence of the current social and political circumstances while proposing an earnest hopefulness for the future. . Mr Longo is personal favorite of mine. His “Men in the Cities” series caused my love of charcoal on paper. . Always a learning process. I thought by choosing a cityscape that was less complex it would be easier and faster to render. I was wrong, lesson learned. Turns out simplicity is more detailed oriented than a multi building cityscape. #sketchartist #drawingdaily #drawingeveryday #visualartist #pencildrawing #artist #art #artoftheday #graphitedrawing #cityscapes #nycartist #realism #iloveminimalart #photorealism #newyorkcityskyscapper (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTiCykUrZmW/?utm_medium=tumblr

Julian Schnabel, some people love him and some don’t. I enjoy Schnabel. I enjoy his gravitas. . Mr Schnabel is the only film director who has directed two films about artists and at the same time enjoying a rather profitable life as a painter. . In “At Eternity’s Gate” (one of Schnabel’s films) in which the doctor who treats van Gogh in the final weeks of his life, played by Mathieu Amalric, asks him, “Why do you paint?” Dafoe’s face contorts into an aggrieved smile, really more of a grimace, and he says, “I paint, as a matter of fact, to stop thinking.” . I agree. This is exactly how I feel about making art. Although painting is a thought process, while I’m painting I am shutting the outside world out. I’m not thinking about what I did yesterday and what I have to do tomorrow. I am present. All the noise is silent. . #julianschnabel #vangogh #makingart #makingarteveryday #artofinstagram #artistatwork #filmmakinglifestyle (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTUxn61LTHA/?utm_medium=tumblr

I dreamt last night that my late boyfriend Steven gave me a warm intense embrace. I asked him what he wanted. He spoke but I couldn’t understand his words. As I looked around the room I saw a person carrying a tray with Bloody Mary fix-in’s and another tray with a French press coffee dispenser the third tray I can’t recall. The room I was in was minimally decorated. It began to rain inside the room. A downpour. I looked up to catch the rain in my mouth and it was beautiful. #dreams #meaningofdreams why does there have to be a meaning #beautifulpeople #beautifullife #motivation #instagrammer #ilovenyc #nyc #nycliving #manhattan #frenchcoffee #bloodymarys #rain #rainisbeautiful (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSth_OZr9zh/?utm_medium=tumblr

I had a conversation the other day with an artist friend @honeyzbrennan about Al Held. Al Held was an American Abstract expressionist painter. He was particularly well known for his large scale Hard-edge paintings. As an artist, multiple stylistic changes occurred throughout his career, however, none of these occurred at the same time as any popular emerging style or acted against a particular art form. In the 1950s his style reflected the abstract expressionist tone and then transitioned to a geometric style in the 60s. During the 1980s there was a shift into painting that emphasized bright geometric space that's deepness reflected infinity. . #sketchartist #drawingdaily #drawingeveryday #visualartist #pencildrawing #artist #art #artoftheday #graphitedrawing #cityscapes #nycartist #realism #iloveminimalart #photorealism #newyorkcityskyscapper #modernart #beautifulpeople #beautifullife #motivation #instagrammer #ilovenyc #nyc #nycliving #manhattan #alheld #alheldfoundation #alheldartwork #geometricpainting (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSkLLm9L21F/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Dakota from Central Park, c. 1890 Main entrance, where John Lennon was shot The Dakota was constructed between October 25, 1880, and October 27, 1884. Henry Janeway Hardenbergh's architectural firm was commissioned to create the design for Edward Cabot Clark, head of the Singer Manufacturing Company. The building purportedly was named The Dakota because at the time of its construction, the area was sparsely inhabited and considered remote from the inhabited area of Manhattan, just as the Dakota Territory was considered remote. The earliest appearance of this story, however, was in a 1933 newspaper interview with The Dakota's long-time manager. Christopher Gray's book New York Streetscapes quotes the interaction thus: "Probably it was called 'Dakota' because it was so far west and so far north". Gray believed that the building's name stemmed from Clark's fondness for the names of the new western states and territories. The Dakota was designated a New York City Landmark in 1969. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976. British musician John Lennon, a building resident, was shot dead by Mark David Chapman outside the building on December 8, 1980. The building's facade was renovated in 2015. #thedakotabuilding #nyc #ilovenyc #nyc #nycliving #cityscapes (at Dakota Building, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSci6oNpw8G/?utm_medium=tumblr
