i have no object permanence about myself. if i’m not in anyones eye sight i assume i have ceased to be. finding out people remember i exist, think about me, and even talk about me when i’m not actively in front of them is startling news every time it is brought to my attention

A photo from the 1920s of the singer and actress and unconventional force of nature that was Libby Holman. As a recording artist, the husky voiced diva recorded popular hits such as “Moanin’ Low,” “Am I Blue?” and “Body and Soul.” The youngest woman to graduate from the University of Cincinnati, her stage career spanned over 3 decades. Holman was openly bisexual, was married to men three times, but was also frequently in relationships with women, including actress Jeanne Eagels and modernist writer Jane Bowles. She preferred younger men and had a relationship with actor Montogomery Clift, who was himself bisexual and who she helped mentor into the film industry. Arguably, her most important work came after her showbiz career. Through a nonprofit foundation named after her deceased son, in the 1960s she helped fund the efforts of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the anti-Vietnam War movement. One of her last public performances – of her late 1920s blues hit “Moanin’ Low” – was before the UN in 1966.
