I have now watched several videos of people creating 'cleaning characters' (e.g. creating a fantasy character who's a half-elf maid for a Duke kind of thing) or imagining themselves into a "my morning" style vlog for a stay-at-home influencer doing some cleaning before brunch.

Heck, even that woman who imagines herself as a 50's housewife whose husband will beat her if the house isn't spotless has a clean house at the end. Whatever works and brings even the smallest spark of joy into the endless repetition of cleaning.

I know it's just that they both went, "Ah yes! Is Purple! Is nerd/goth adjacent! Perfect for Washi." And neither of them are as terminally online as me with the online associations I have. And yet, I am now a black skater skirt and a pair of thigh-highs that will fit over my frankly THICC AS FUCK thighs from the perfect outfit.

So... the issue I have with people declaring "things that never happened" is that sometimes, 'everybody clapped' moments kind of... do happen? Like, when I was in year 12, we has practice exams half way through the year. So I do a practice exam for all my classes, including art. And I am SUPER into my art subjects for year 12. So I get a 20 out of 20 for the practice exam essay (not for the final exam - that was either a 19 or an 18, I can no longer remember).

But the thing is, when the practice exams were returned, the guy who returned them looked at my score, then said "Which of you is [my name]?" I raised my hand, and he came over to literally shake my hand. Apparently he hadn't seen a 20 on an art exam before and wanted to congratulate me.

Now, if I told that story on Reddit (or God forbid, Twitter), NO ONE would believe "I did so good in an art exam a teacher wanted to shake my hand" as a story. But I swear to fucking GOD it happened.

And I was absolutely paralysed with the fear of being noticed for the whole thing, because of my weird relationship to being perceived and acknowledged.

This is so important.

My mother worked as a cleaner while putting herself through high-school and uni after her and my father divorced. She met one of her best friends for years as a client. She NEEDED to be hired to make ends meet, and I know she preferred working for people who needed her help.

Hiring someone to perform a service for you is not exploitation, as long as they are offering of their free will and are getting a fair / sufficient compensation. Maybe they don't necessarily WANT to be cleaning a house, but to be fair, I don't especially WANT to be working in tech support. But I can, and I get paid while being treated very well. If they can, and are being paid AND treated well, then hire them!

The wealthy buy the labour of many to do the things they don't want or things they want to extract value from; you are not evil for buying labour for things you need. Or even for help with things a stay-at-home partner would have done 60-80 years ago.

Fuck, I WANT to be able to hire a cleaner regularly some day. I am firmly middle class these days (I think, at least), but I cannot keep a clean house to save my life. I am barely keeping the kitchen, floors, and my underpants clean, my bedroom is Oops! All Clothes and I have never cleaned my doors. Which sounds like something you shouldn't need, but if you look at them... they need a freaking clean. Last time I mopped was because there was blood on the floor.

Get help if you need it. Use the services you need. Maybe make a friend.
