#secondhandfirst is a great way to save money AND be better to the planet! 😻 We wanted to see if our cat would like to be an #adventurecat, so I found this backpack on a #secondhand website instead of buying it new! Storing food properly is one of the biggest things you can do to reduce food waste once food enters your house. #FreeganFebruary - the season of toast 🥖🍞 these are some of my #freegan toast meals so far.. there have been many! Did you know that bread is one of the most thrown out foods in the world? One of the reasons is that shops will proudly tell you that the bread is all baked fresh that day... Which inherently means that anything left at the end of the day can't be sold. When I was #dumpsterdiving more often there was always a full bag of bread in every bin. Consistently. Shops need to find a way to manage stocks to make sure there isn't this huge amount of waste. One excellent way to #reuse cardboard is protest posters! 😜 Using your voice and showing up to protests, rallies, and demonstrations is one of the stronger ways to show your feelings about topics. If we want a just, #sustainable, kind, and eco minded world then we need to tell the people in power and make them see what matters to us. If we can change the system then we are bringing everyone along, making eco-friendly life the easier option, or ensuring that everyone is housed with dignity. Second hand bedsheets - would you do it? These brushed cotton sheets were put up on marketplace after apparently only being used for 6 months because someone was leaving the country. I put them through two 90°c washes with double detergent and a bit of bleach and baking soda. Some people have a thing about #secondhand bedding, but in my mind it is just another fabric that can be cleaned and used. What do you think? The first harvest from last year's peas! 👩‍🌾 I saved my seeds from a few pods that dried out before we could pick them during last year's summer heatwave and planted them a couple of months ago. I thought the success rate might be about 1 in 4 germinating... It was almost 100%! I'm so thrilled! These babies were grown in pots that started off on our apartment balcony and have now moved to our garden at our new house. 🤞 Fingers crossed this the first of many many more delicious harvests from the garden of our new home. 🌱 We've also got 3 volunteer tomato plants that must have come from dropped seeds from last year's plants, a potato plant, and loads of spring onions grown from the ends of store bought ones. It's fruit season! I ended up with about 5kg of plums, so I've made a few plum alcohol preserves which should be ready for Christmas, and I've stewed the rest! I'm not confident with canning yet, so I've opted for the freezing option. I portioned my stewed peaches in a muffin tray and I'll pop them in a container when they are frozen.
