How to: Refill with Plaine Products
If you’ve been around with us the past year then you know all about refilling. Through our refillery we were able to offer home good products essentially “on tap” to help reduce your single-use plastic. However, since I closed the retail store I knew the next best thing (and honestly more convenient) is introducing you to refill programs that come straight to your door.
Many years ago, I stumbled upon Plaine Products, and began ordering my shampoo and conditioner from them. In your first order you will receive the following:
Aluminum filled bottle of the product ordered
An aluminum top on that bottle
A pump
This will get you all set up and be your most expensive order. Why? Because you are making a payment down on the bottle. Once that bottle is empty, you will place an order for a new one that will be shipped to you in the same way, minus the pump since you now have one!
You will switch out your bottles and place the empty one back in the box and in the mailbox to send back to Plaine Products. They will then sanitize the empties and use them for a future order. We love this because it keeps the system closed loop!
Since expanding my Plaine Products account, I now also use their Body Lotion, Hair Repair, and Beauty Oil!

Second hand bedsheets - would you do it? These brushed cotton sheets were put up on marketplace after apparently only being used for 6 months because someone was leaving the country. I put them through two 90°c washes with double detergent and a bit of bleach and baking soda. Some people have a thing about #secondhand bedding, but in my mind it is just another fabric that can be cleaned and used. What do you think? Are there any things you would NEVER buy second hand? #sustainablehome #lowwasteliving #thriftshops #secondhandhome #zerowastedublin #zerowastehome #zerowasteireland (at Dublin, Ireland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CneL0Yjsb0E/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

DIY simple produce bags today at Queen Vic Market. The plastic bag you get today will outlive you! One of the simplest ways to reduce our impact on the environment is to swap out single-use plastics with alternatives that are friendlier for the world we live in. Eliminate your need to use single use plastic produce bags ever again by making your own reusable bag. Every reusable bag helps because an average plastic bag is used for a mere 12 minutes and takes 100s years to break down. #shopsustainably #plasticfreepackaging #zerowastevictoria#consciousshopping #responsiblestyle #lowwastehome#lowwasteliving #plasticfree #ourplanetourhome#sustainablepractices #zerowastegoals #wastefreeplanet#sustainablechoices #zerowaste @vicmarket @zerowastevictoria (at Queen Victoria Market) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpCFg6tvWEG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

oday we are starting a KNOW THE INGREDIENT series, where every week we will focus on one common ingredient in health and beauty products and analyse the impact of those chemicals on our body and environment. This week let's look at DIOXIN - a common ingredient in sanitary pads, shampoos, soaps, deodorants, cream etc. Dioxin is highly toxic and causes many hormonal and digestive tract issues. It is also believed to contribute to the development of many cancers. While 'any' amount of chemical is not suitable for 'any' part of the body, it is especially notorious for causing reproductive issues. Talk about Dioxin in sanitary pads, so close to the highly porous vaginal area, can be absorbed rather easily and cause major damage. Time to heal the body & mind with nature and natural solutions. #nowasteliving #goingzerowaste #zerowastelife #wastefree #ditchplastic #zerowasteliving #zerowastehome #lessplastic #lifewithoutplastic #zerowastejourney #lowwasteliving #wastefreeliving #ecofriendlyliving #wasteless #reducewaste #reducereuserecycle #thereisnoplanetb #noplanetb #savetheplanet #sustainablelifestyle #lowimpactmovement #sustainabilitymatters #zerowastecommunity #livesustainably #minimalwaste #reduceplasticwaste #earthfriendly #consciousconsumer #goinggreen #wastefreeplanet

Have you been baking sourdough during lockdown? If you’ve been thinking about giving it a go I have a fail proof recipe below from the the experts in fermenting products Kilner. We also have a Sourdough Starter Set on our store to get you started, product tag on photos or on Store www.goecostore.com.au INGREDIENTS * 500g Strong unbleached white bread flour * 300g Mature sourdough starter * 250ml Filtered water * 2tsp Salt * Flavourless oil * Method METHOD 1. Mix the flour, sourdough starter and 250ml / 8.5 fl oz filtered water in a mixing bowl. Add the salt. 2. Tip the dough on to a floured work surface and knead for 10 minutes. 3. Place the knead dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp tea towel and leave to prove for 2 ½ -3 hours. 4. Tip the dough onto a work surface and knead briefly to knock out any air bubbles. Shape the dough into a smooth ball and dust it with flour. 5. Line a medium-sized bowl with a clean tea towel and flour it really well or use a proving basket. 6. Place the dough, seam-side up, into the bowl or proving basket and cover loosely. 7. Leave at room temperature until it roughly doubles in size. This can take anywhere from 4-8 hours. 8. Place a large baking tray in the oven and heat to 230°C/210°C fan. 9. Fill a small roasting tin with a little water and place this in the oven to create steam. 10. Remove the baking tray from the oven, sprinkle with flour, then carefully tip the dough on to the tray. 11. Slash the top of the dough, if you like, then bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown. 12. Leave to cool on a wire rack before serving. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🌱 Follow @goecostore for #ecotips and #ecoproducts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳 #sourdough #sourdoughrecipe #lockdown #baking #sustainablehome #lowwasteliving #ecoproduct #waronwasteau #goecostore #ecobusiness #aussiebusiness #consciousbusiness #ecowarrior #zerowaste #reduceplasticwaste #reduce #reuse #kilner (at Long Jetty, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSxT9INhzx6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Who are the biggest polluters in the world? This question is often shrouded in mystery, but @guardian has written an exceptional series on the 20 biggest polluters on the planet, their impacts, and who owns them. ⁣ ⁣ Needless to say, the biggest polluters are primarily oil and gas companies. According to Guardian’s 9 October article, these 20 companies have knowingly produced about 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions from 1965 to 2017. The Guardian uses the year 1965 because that is when the oil companies became aware that burning fossil fuels was directly correlated to climate change. There is a paper trail indicating they knew the climate would start to destabilize around the year 2000. ⁣ ⁣ Another Guardian article examines how just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of all global emissions. Digging deeper, these same powerful companies have successfully diverted blame to the consumers (us) for the problem, without taking any responsibility for the part they play. It's true that our individual choices matter. A recent study found that 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions comes from household decisions, such as personal vehicles, meat-based diets, housing, and heating and cooling. ⁣ ⁣ This doesn't exonerate the biggest polluters in the world, many of which are investor-owned (some are owned by governments). These global conglomerates have known for decades the disaster that awaits us. Yet the oil executives continue to disseminate false information and promote climate change denialism, while they reap record profits, and the planet smothers and drowns. Our political systems have failed to stop it. ⁣ ⁣ So what can we do to stop it? Listed are 13 things we can do as individuals to help. The number one thing we can do is VOTE. Did you know that environmentalists don't typically vote? Given the crisis we face, it's all hands on deck at this point. If you are an environmentalist and if you live in a democracy, please vote and donate to politicians who will fight climate change and pollution.⁣ ⁣ See the other 12 things we can do to help stop the oncoming crisis.⁣

You betcha you can repurpose many of your kitchen scraps into nutrient dense plant food. But not all leftovers all created equal. Resident expert plant mom Kaitlyn breaks down just what’s right for your DIY fertilizer in her latest piece, live over on closedloopcooking.com.
Her top recs include: - compost or compost tea (not to be sipped y’all)
- worm castings (just a fancy word for worm poop)
- aquarium water (DM me pics of your tanks tho)
You can get experimental with coffee grounds, banana peels, starch water, and eggshells, but make sure you test what’s best for your plant. Soil is a complex organism and what works for one plant may be too acidic for another. As lovely as it would be to upcycle all our leftovers to our houseplants and watch our living room turn into a jungle, it would probably result in more pests and yellow leaves.
Instead we’re doubling down on getting Kaitlyn her own apartment sized worm bin. Because apparently, there are infinite uses for worm castings.
Check out the full article to learn more about the do’s and don’ts of homemade fertilizer! https://closedloopcooking.com/living/lets-talk-homemade-fertilizer/

@kiwiecobox Dear Mother Earth, 🌎 ⠀ Thank you for the air around us. The pressure keeps us upright, stable, allows us to breathe, to see the world around us. It allows us to enjoy. Thank you for the wind who whispers messages from Spirit.❤️ ⠀ Thank you for fire that keep us warm, heals us, ignites our passion, and cooks our food. ⠀ Thank you for your plants. They sustain us with food, give us medicine to heal our bodies, wood for our shelter, raw material for clothing. They provide our oxygen. BYO cup to gigs and festivals! There is a huge amount of waste at festivals, but this is an easy swap to avoid just a little bit of it. 🍺 Most festivals don't allow glass, but we conveniently had a couple of metal mugs that did the job perfectly! They are also indestructible 💪 I didn't have a single issue at @sea_sessions with my #reusablecup - and it was also great for drinking water at the water stations 💧 Next time I hope to see something like the returnable pint cups that other festivals have started introducing too! #BYOcup #zerowaste #reducereuserecycle #lowwasteliving #LessWaste #wasteless #sustainableliving #festivalseason #seasessions #seasessions22 #zerowasteireland #zerowasteirl (at Main Beach Bundoran) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfGifMAsHQx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I patched this quilt this week. This quilt is at least 36 yrs old but probably older, and has NOT been treated well. Almost all the little triangles were worn through. So I cut new ones and just sewed them on top of the old ones. Is this the proper way to restore a quilt? I don’t know but it seems to have gotten the job done, no more holes. Next summer I’ll likely be replacing another batch and the top and bottom edges. Then over the years more and more. Someday this will be a whole new quilt with my grandma’s quilt sandwiched in the middle. Hopefully an archeologist finds it some day. Remind me to put it in a bog before I die.
