So I’ve been wanting to do a giveaway for awhile, but figured a fun time to do one would be right before Shadowbringers! Then I lost track of time and well, here I am sneaking one in! Yuti Kyis looked beside herself. Smiling so widely it must have hurt her cheeks. She seemed unable to form words for a moment, though what was in her face wasn't surprise but joy. "Lain," she said quietly and her voice was still firm. "It was... it was never a question. When I'm beside you, when I am with you, I feel complete. I feel whole." She was crying slightly now but only from sheer happiness, unable to contain the emotions. "Of course I will Lain. I am yours and you are mine. It was never a question. And the only answer is Yes." She knelt down next to him so she could look into his eyes. "Marry me, C'laihn Venator. Our adventure has only just begun."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
C'laihn Venator nodded slowly as the corners of his eyes almost wrinkled by his smile growing wider. “It is! I didn’t want it to be too obvious at first, but… well it kind of makes a nice picture when it’s together, right? Kinda like us. First the fish, because of the skyfish that started it all…” He drew in a deep breath, nodding as he continued to explain.  “Then the seashell because of our time at the Ruby Sea, which I don’t think I could ever forget. I was able to see a different side of you, I think.  Then the little carbuncle mask from that festival! A-and the ribbon reminded me of our red string, except the little clouds are from our adventures jumping in Yanxia or the Sea of Clouds!”
He breathed again and then gestured towards his own earring, “And then… the blue feather. I had two matching ones from when I used to wear both, but I… I want you to have one of them. Although I changed out the beads, so they’re also yours too in a way, since red’s your color.”  He paused and then ducked his head a little, “I… I’m kind of rambling, but it kinda feels like we’re sharing the same luck then, you know?” Yuti Kyis listened quietly though she was blinking her eyes rapidly. Her smile however seemed to grow more warm by the moment and her tail was dancing a mile a minute behind her. She seemed almost afraid to speak as if worried to break the spell. She hesitated for a moment and then carefully slipped her beret from her head, her ears twitching in the air. Without hesitation she carefully attached the earring to her ear, the opposite of Lain’s. Two parts of a pair. After she did that she took a small nervous breath.
“We’re sharing more than the same luck, Lain,” she said quietly. She reached her free hand out and lightly took his hand. “… We’re sharing our life. You and I.” C'laihn Venator squeezed her hand in both of his as his eyes visibly widened for a moment as she took off the beret and put on the earring. His tail began to lash at the air, wagging happily behind him while he smiled broadly. His mouth opened to talk, but he found himself at a loss of words before a moment.
Lain then leaned forward to kiss her on the forehead before quietly speaking up again, “That’s perfect. You’re completely right. We’ve been on so many adventures together, but… what I’m going to ask is probably the biggest one yet, because I don’t ever want to leave your side. You make me feel like I could… jump across Kugane or to the top of any mountain! So.”  He punctuated his word as he slipped a hand to his hip and then dropped to a knee, his armor clinking softly as he grinned.  "I thought it’d be great to ask you here, where it feels like everything started…”  "Yuti, will you go on another adventure with me? Forever?“

[BAL/CRYS] LFRP: Jana Horne
Tumblr media
★ GENERAL INFORMATION ★ Name: Jana Horne Gender: Female
Race: Rava Viera
Birthplace: Unknown
Current Residence: Nomadic
Relationship Status: Single
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Occupation: Mercenary and Voidsent Hunter
★ PHYSICAL APPEARANCE ★
Hair: A dark shade of brown, often worn wild and loose. She prefers longer hair as it was how she recalls her mother’s hair being. Eyes: Dark green Height: 5′8″
Distinguishing Marks: A crimson jewel attached to her forehead. Any attempts to touch or remove this will be met with the harshest of responses.  Common Accessories: A mage’s rod, though she finds herself preferring natural materials over processed materials wherever possible. A small bag of various items and potions used for adventuring. A single ring she wears in a chain around her neck, her only keepsake of her mother.
★ PERSONALITY & TIDBITS ★
Jana was born outside of the Woods and has never known them. Her mother, already with child, was captured by a Garlean scout group and stolen away. Jana was born in captivity and lived in a Garlean camp for the first few years of her life. When she was but six summers her mother was part of an attempted jailbreak. Jana was the only survivor, overlooked by the Garleans as they slaughtered the fleeing prisoners. From there she made her way to Ul’dah where she was taken in by a wealthy merchant, entranced with the oddity of a Viera in Eorzea.  As she grew she demonstrated a talent for magics. Her adoptive father had wished her to go into Conjury but Jana found the Shroud unwelcoming, the strange woods striking something deep and primal in her. She had settled instead for mastery of Thaumaturgy, aided by an illegal Soulstone procured for her by the man she called father. Her first name was given by her mother but her last gifted by her patron-turned-father
Now she makes her living as an adventurer. Her keen senses for aether, part of her Viera heritage, make her a talented hunter of valuable artifacts and dangerous creatures. Most of her earned money is returned to her patron as thanks for his assistance... something that has been drilled into her as her duty.
Talents: Combat magic, especially thaumaturgy and its magics.  Weakness: Overly blunt, socially awkward, dislikes being touched. Dislikes the Shroud and areas with significant tainted Aether.  Religion: None Alignment: Neutral. Prone to picking the logical action over the right one.
★ Hooks ★
A Blunt Approach: Jana is unlikely to stand by if she hears something she wants to express her opinion on. She will come up and speak, even if she’s interrupting a conversation, and is more than a little likely to get into fights simply because she does not hold herself back and isn’t the best at recognizing when to be quiet. Garleans and Voidsent: She hates both with almost equal measure. The Garleans on a personal level and the Voidsent as they feel unnatural and wrong. Should someone be looking for help with either she will gladly offer her magick to the cause.
Tainted Aether: Jana does not deal well with overwhelming abundances of aether. In most cases she can control herself through strict focus, but if injured or overwhelmed she can go berserk. Could be bad for someone who runs into her in one of these frenzies! Casual Conversation: Jana may be blunt but she isn’t cruel. She has had little chance to simply talk to anyone who wasn’t her father or a servant since she was a child. If someone isn’t likely to be turned away by her nature then it could be a good way to make a friend... if an odd one.
Anything Else: I’m open to ideas and glad to hear concepts! Adventure, excitement, casual meetings, anything of the sort! Just ask and I’ll be willing to give it a shot!
★ OOC Info ★
Genres: I am flexible and can enjoy a lot of different genres. The character is geared towards serious/darker/mature RP but that doesn’t mean there can’t be moments of lightheartedness! As long as it fits the character I am fine. Length: One or more paragraphs usually though it may fluctuate depending on situation. (If RPing at a public event for example it will be shorter if just to help compensate for The Scroll O’ Doom.) Discord posts are similarly flexible.
Server: Balmung/Crystal. Availability: Most days past 7 PM EST, sporadically throughout the day on Discord. I am glad to RP before Shadowbringers, it will need to be on Discord or you’ll have to do a lot of imagination with the alt I intend to fantasia!
Contact Information : @yutikyis on Tumblr (natch),  yutikyis#4287 on Discord.  Other: I just want everyone to enjoy themselves in RP! If you’re not having fun/frustrated/unhappy please let me know so I can adjust! I promise I’m not a jerk (I hope) and am just eager for the chance to explore new characters and new concepts as we go into Shadowbringers!

(An amazing Rper!)
[Bal/Crys] LFRP: A’kini Khotan
Tumblr media
★ GENERAL INFORMATION ★
Name: Kini   [Full Name: A’kini Khotan; Nickname: Little Bur] Gender: Female Age: 20 Race: Miqo’te, Seeker of the Sun Birthplace: Near the Rothlyt Sound, east of the Black Shroud Current Residence: Homeless.  Relationship Status: Single Sexual Orientation: Bisexual Occupation: None currently, but will try doing most anything if it means gil, goods, etc.
★ PHYSICAL APPEARANCE ★
Hair: A light blonde that shifts to a slight strawberry hue towards the ends. Eyes: Light blue Height: 4′8″ Distinguishing Marks: A thin grazed scar that passes over her right eye (marking the brow and just the top of her cheek) and a short, claw-like scar near the right side of her jawline.  Common Accessories: A solid rose gold bangle around her left ankle with a tiny jingle bell attached to it. Otherwise due to her lack of funds, Kini will once and awhile try to collect ribbons to help her appearance. It isn’t uncommon for her to have them tied into her hair or somewhere upon her person for a splash of color.
★ PERSONALITY & TIDBITS ★
Kini was groomed to support her sibling and due to such an upbringing, she finds herself lost and indecisive without another’s direction. Despite her codependency issues, she is a vibrant individual who feels her best when she’s proven useful. Curious, energetic, meticulous and a bit resilient in her own way, A’kini Khotan is a wandering soul unsure of her own purpose.
Talents: Supportive magic (Minus healing), sensing magic, observant Weakness: Lacks physical strengths, gullible, deafness in her right ear, pushover Religion: The Twelve Alignment: Neutral, but unsettled and shifts depending on who she is with. Morally confused!
Tumblr media
★ HOOKS ★
Only looking for LT connections please, but of any kind!
✩ Easy Target - Kini is relatively new to the lands beyond her tribe and is a bit out of her element. This in combination with her personality could make her a target for those looking to prey on others. Perhaps your character decides to use her as a distraction, talk her into helping with an “odd” job or any number of other things!  ♠ A Pick-me-up - Perhaps your character appeared down on their luck or like they could use a boost? While she doesn’t haphazardly throw support magic about, if she feels like someone truly could use it (or she’s asked) then Kini wouldn’t blink at providing assistance. It could be as simple as assisting someone struggling to lift a large crate or a more complex scenario! ✩ The Little Bur - Kini accepts hand outs or good will, but she usually feels very compelled to return them. A little bit of food might find your character being tailed by A’kini as she looks for a way to repay what was offered to her. A splash of kind attention will have her keeping a look out for the same familiar face. She is also very easy to hire if someone extends a job or a task to her. Kini is always eager to be useful to someone however she can! ♠ Insert Brainstorm Here - Bad guys? Good guys? Friends? Not-so-friends? There are plenty more ideas to brainstorm up and Kini is open and friendly enough to bumble into plenty of scenarios, establishments and individuals! Definitely antagonist friendly. ✩ Always open to more ideas! General or specific, hit me up with anything.
★ OOC INFORMATION ★
Genres: Dark, Mature, Adventure, Action & Drama tend to be my favorite genres! I favor serious themes and conflict, gore, adult themes, etc are okay so long as it fits the characters. Length: 1-3ish paragraphs in-game, but honestly it’ll depend on the situation! If RP happens on Discord, it can be longer depending on the scenario and my mood. Quality over quantity though! Server: Balmung Timezone: EST Availability: In-game: anytime after 6/8 PM. Discord: I check Discord throughout the day! Contact Information: @claihn via Tumblr, Lain#0004 on Discord Other: I consider myself a pretty friendly, understanding and flexible individual. All I ask is for good communication so we’re on the same page when it comes to schedules or plot ideas! Also I am most interested in in-game RP at the moment, but can make exceptions for Discord. I just find Discord RP tends to go slowly if it’s posted at leisure, which can make plots fizzle out.
Thank you for your time! If A’kini doesn’t catch your interest- Kincaid & Mana are also active!

[Bal/Cry] LF LTRP for New Character aka “Candlelight”
“Candlelight” is the word I am using for tags and references for this new character. I am extremely excited to RP her, as I am indulging in some of my favorite designs and personalities. While she will be new, please do not fret as I plan on investing quite a bit into her. She is a creation I have been working on for admittedly sometime, but is at the stage where she is a bit dependent on some key long-term connections that I am hoping to establish before Shadowbringers or sooner!
Tumblr media
SNIPPETS
♟ Candlelight‘s race and name are pending, given that I am waiting for the benchmark. She will either be a Viera or a Miqo’te, as both races work just dandy with her background, so it will be completely dependent on looks!
♟ She is a young adult that has a great deal of room for personal growth. Her strengths lie in supportive magic meant specifically for buffing and aiding another individual and is lacking in any sort of personal strength meant for herself. Hooray for twisted upbringings!
♟ Her entire life was dedicated to supporting her prodigy sibling, who is now MIA.
♟ She is a neutral character that teeters upon the line. Her codependency (both past and present) make her vulnerable to outward change and give some fun with the layers of her personality of what is true inner change or not. This makes her open to latching onto individuals of any alignment without care if they’re a murdering psychopath or a heroic savior. So long as she’s allowed to follow and is useful, that’s all that matters. I am super interested in seeing how she will change over time!
HOOKS
♟ “Candlelight” -  She needs an individual to follow, whether they are a villain/antagonist, a neutral adventurer or the epitome of good. There are so many scenarios that could be spun up to strike this connection that can be established or role played out! Maybe an antagonist discovers how willing she is to be manipulated or help with unsavory tasks? An adventurer might like to have someone who’d use support magic for practically nothing. Or maybe a more stalwart individual takes pity on her and she just… keeps following them.  ** This is a high priority connection for me. Please only consider this if you’re wanting a long term, meaningful connection for your character! I will not assume anything about how the dynamic of the relationship grows either, so never fear!   **
♟ “Taxes” - This is more for characters of questionable morality. She is a rather meek and malleable individual from a social standpoint. Perhaps your character has convinced her that she has to pay taxes and stops by to collect coins once and awhile. Or that she should keep an ear out for certain tidbits of information and occasionally prods her to see if she’s picked up on anything. Etc!
♟ “Donations” - This is more for characters of “better” morality. Maybe your character saw how out of sorts she was with the city/land. (The invisible neon sign of “GULLIBLE” could have been a giveaway too.)  So perhaps your character checks up on her once and awhile and keeps an eye out, offering advice or a trinket or two. Of course, she’d feel like she has to pay such kind acts back and doesn’t have much of a gauge for what the appropriate response would be. Etc!
♟ “First Aid” -  She is not a healer on the scope of a full fledged conjurer. However, her entire life was dedicated to supportive magic. She can heal and perhaps more uniquely, provide invigorating magical boons that last for a decent amount of time depending on the scenario. Perhaps your character was down on his or her luck and seeing this, she offered some assistance. Or they were completely outmatched in a fight and she threw a little spell your way. Etc!
INEVITABLE OOC
♟ I am more than happy to divulge more details to anyone who might be interested in this sort of RP! I left out the basics (personality/background) to keep this shorter and geared more towards the concept. No worries or hard feelings if you are not interested after our discussion or ideas do not mesh after inquiring.
♟ Candlelight will be a serious character that I am looking forward to watch grow through stories and interactions. I LOVE ANTAGONISTS AND VILLAINS- so please don’t be shy! However, valiant knights and others are just as valid too! Her themes (and my RP preferences) range all over the board, with an emphasis for dark fantasy, drama & adventure. The only genre I am not too inclined for is pure comedic fluff and no AU’s.
♟ In-game RP is my main preference! However, I do not mind RPing on Discord if scheduling gets wonky sometimes and definitely love it for just chatting/throwing ideas/random inspirations. My hours of operation tend to be 6PM - 2AM EST on most days except Saturday! Not including Discord randoms.
♟ I generally write 1-2 decently (? xD)  descriptive paragraphs, but will sometimes shorten it for events, lengthen it for personal or adapt if the moment doesn’t require it. Quality is more important to me than quantity. My past partners can attest that sometimes I do get carried away though- but usually only over Discord! >>;
♟ I LOVE communication and I like to think that I’m friendly. I’m hoping to get some connections for long-term RP that can be consistent. I do not generally lurk around hubs waiting for RP because I’d much rather actively be doing something, but please do not mistake it for being too busy! ^^
♟ Both my RP partner and myself having fun is the highest priority for me.
THE END
Did I mention I’m bad at summarizing? Ah…anyway!  If you have any questions or are interested, do not hesitate to give me a poke.  Messaging via tumblr works (I’ll keep an eye on it more due to this post haha) but you are also more than welcome to add my Discord: Lain#0004 .  I know this kind of LFRP is a little unconventional, but thanks for at least giving it a glance! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this little idea strikes some fancies!

Lost
The Beds were a comfortable place. Yuti had always felt that way. Simple. Safe. She had found herself wandering them quite often these days, looking for a house for sale. Yet today it was little more than a distraction. Her eyes drifted over the houses without seeing them. She followed familiar paths without much thinking about it. She knew several who lived or had lived in the Beds and her body could follow the simple paths without her thinking about it. Her mind was focused on Lain.
Where was he?
He’d gone hunting. That was normal. Yet he hadn’t come back. That wasn’t. She’d known him to be gone for some time. Maybe he’s hurt.
She didn’t want to think about that. After what had happened to him recently. Hurt and hurt again. Not to mention that strange encounter he’d had. What if his luck had run out? Vincent had said he was fine the last he’d seen him but... that only made her worry more. The idea of Lain being hurt was awful.
Maybe he was tired of you.
That thought lingered in her mind. Every time it did she would brush her hand against her beret, where the ring he’d given her was entwined with the earring. He’d promised. She couldn’t imagine him breaking that promise. She just couldn’t. He was Lain. He’d told her differently. The scary thing was... she trusted him. It had been hard to. She kept expecting him to leave. To get bored. To vanish. To decide she wasn’t good enough. Yet he hadn’t. Not yet. For him to disappear now... it made no sense. So she did trust him. She knew that if he wasn’t back yet it wasn’t because of her. So why was that worse? Maybe because she couldn’t blame herself. It was a comfortable thing to blame herself. Egotistical and self-centered perhaps but comfortable. She could know in her heart that someone was safe, even if it wasn’t with her. This was worse. It was not knowing. She loved to learn but it was also something that helped comfort against the unknown. To learn. To be educated. To be aware. To avoid being blindsided and caught off guard. She had known people whose lovers or family had vanished never to be seen. Carried off by voidsent or Garleans or gods knows what else. The constant wondering, they said, was always the worst.
Yet that was still self-centered. Lain needed her. Yet she had no idea what to do. He wasn’t answering. He wasn’t anywhere nearby. She’d taken a trip to Ishgard but had found no sign of him. He was... somewhere. He had to be. But where? She pictured him alone. Hurt. Helpless. She closed her eyes and tried to force the image out of her head. He was fine. He would be fine. He was probably just doing something silly. That had to be it. That had to be. He’d show up in a day or two having lost track of time and with a big prideful grin on his face as he dropped off an entire Zu for dinner. Maybe he was dead. Yuti felt her heart stop. Felt like the color drained from the world. Felt empty and hollow. He couldn’t be. He couldn’t. He was Lain. He was... Yet why wouldn’t it be the case? That was back to the egotistical thinking. Lain was hers and so he couldn’t die. Not so randomly and tragically and pointlessly. Yet what made her different from the countless men and women who had suffered tragedy. They weren’t her but she wasn’t special. She wasn’t the star of a story. She felt tears welling up and panic building. She had to be somewhere. She had to. She ran through the beds, desperate to get away from the streets. She wanted to teleport but as frightened as she was she didn’t know she could do it successfully. She pushed her way, stepping off the main pathway and looked for somewhere private, somewhere empty. There. A house. No placard in front of it. A tiny wood cabin, overgrown with weeds. Windows shattered and broken. Judging by the shape of it, it had been someone’s vacation cottage before... something. Yuti didn’t care. She approached it and tried the door. It was mercifully open and she slipped inside, out of the horrible cheer of the sunlight and into the comforting musty darkness. She slipped into a corner and dropped to her knees, slipping to the ground and resting her head against her forehead. Her eyes were tightly closed and behind them danced the infurating, wonderful, smiling Miqo’te who she loved with all her heart. He was coming back. He was Or Twelve help whoever took him from her.

The Blank Page
Thunder cracked from above and the earth shook for a deafening beat. C'laihn’s head had been lolled forward, motionless, but his eyes snapped open and his head jerked back with a gasp.
The Miqo'te was sitting underneath a broken stone bridge in the middle of a barren land, although in the dim light of the waning sky it wasn’t easy to make out. Echoes of rolling thunder, more distant than what had woken him, grumbled through the sky as rain blanketed his surroundings. At least the lip of the bridge served as an awning of sorts, protecting his seated form with his back to the hard underside.
“I don’t… understand.” Lain mumbled to himself, grimacing as he raised a gloved hand towards his forehead. He pulled it away and saw darkness over his fingers- blood. His head didn’t hurt so he wasn’t sure if it was his or someone else’s, but the answer became clearer when he looked down. His mix of chain mail and leather armor was spattered and tainted in gore. His stomach twisted at the sight, although confusion dominated his head. What happened? The last thing he remembered, he was out hunting and tracking a few large birds in the Fringes. The afternoon sun had shined out through scattered clouds and it’d been warm and pleasant. He’d been thinking about what to buy Yuti for Heavensturn and had paused by a large outcropping of rocks when…
When… ?!
Tumblr media
Lightning flashed again and C'laihn instinctively cringed. His ears flattened against his skull and he drew up his knees to duck his head against them. Despite the blood and mess over his armor, the loud storm took precedence and dominated his thoughts. A grimace formed upon his features when the thunder roared loudly over head, making his body tremble and his hands slap to his ears to cover them in a panic. It’d been ages since he’d been caught out in a storm. The scent was always distinct enough to warn him, so he’d avoided it for ages. Yet now, somehow, he’d ended up in a miniature version of his own personal hell.
Lain was not afraid of much, but the irrational nature overrode his senses. He couldn’t think of plans, questions or even reaching for his linkpearl. The landscape continued to illuminate with the spiderwebs of lighting from above and each time he tensed and braced himself for the roar afterwards. His current struggle was against the storm and the Miqo'te would have to simply persist, alone and underneath the broken bridge while the world wept around him.

OOC Note ––– –
I much prefer longer-term RP which can either involve a story arch or a relationship development (whether a friendship or romantic) that takes time and sees characters grow or change in some way. I also strongly prefer small group RP or 1:1 RP. I also love RP because I have found so many lovely communities of roleplayers throughout the years. I RP for fun because I enjoy it, and I want you to enjoy RP too! I’m supportive, caring, and kind, so let’s promote OOC communication and get to know one another, and then build some fantastic RP together!

Ffxivwrite2018
Thank you once again, @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for hosting this event, and providing a much needed positive focus for folks in our community. While I wasn’t entirely pleased with some of the stuff I wrote, perfection wasn’t the point. You challenged us again with a great variety of prompts and made some of us stretch a little to fit the themes which were presented. I appreciate it, and will look forward to doing it again next year.

Prompt #30: Close
It was shocking how suddenly things could change. Yuti knew that was the case but this was... above and beyond. Her house was gone. Just gone. Replaced by a pile of rubble and ashes. Honestly it might be less painful if it was entirely gone. It would spare her from the terrible sensation of walking through the remains of the place that had been hers.  It was just a building perhaps but that wasn’t the case. It had been her building. Her home. Hers. A place that belonged to her. Where she was safe and comfortable and happy. Where she could go when she wanted to be by herself and read. It had been the one, true, first place that had been hers. Her castle. Her stronghold.  Her feet crunched on something and she looked down. A black dirty mess was beneath her feet, dotted here and there with fluffy white. It took her a long moment to realize what it was. Her rug. One of the first things she’d ever gotten for her home. Tears welled up in her eyes and she fought them back. It was just a rug. Just an item. Just a rug. Just a... And she was crying and she knew why. It was’t just a rug. It was another thing ripped from her, torn from her life, stolen from her by those people. She was undeniably thankful that it hadn’t been worse. That Lain or Mana or Vin’s remains weren’t sitting in the ashes of her home. It was a significant blessing. It could have been worse. Yet that small selfish part of her mind couldn’t help but focus on the things that were gone. So many of her books. Her journals. Her stuffed animals. Her bed. So many things that had belonged to her were now taken away. Many things had survived in some form or another. Her enchantments had kept some of her most valuable books from destruction. Junpei, lucky Junpei, had somehow survived intact. His aquarium had been cracked but not broken and she’d had enough time to transfer him safely before it had worn entirely.  Yet at least at this moment she couldn’t focus on the things she still had. She knew she should. She really did. It wasn’t healthy to dwell on that what she lost but... this was supposed to be her and Lain’s home. That was what hurt most of all. That was what made her keep coming back to what was lost. She and Lain couldn’t curl up on the couch again, it was little more than splintered wood. They couldn’t sit on the sheep rug by the fire. They couldn’t eat breakfast at the tiny table. They couldn’t... She was crying harder and harder, covering her eyes. She’d built up this fantasy future. Maybe coming back to the home on her wedding day. Maybe, gods, even raising children here. It had been an investment for the future. A plan. Now it had been stolen from her. Not the physical house but everything it represented. Finding a house had been difficult enough. Building it up had been a true chore. She’d been so proud of it. It was where she’d met Lain.  The roof. The roof was gone. That hit her like a fist to the gut. The roof where she’d met him. Blown apart. Sure, that had technically been Vin’s fault but... not really. She couldn’t blame him for doing what he had to and the rest had been all The Light’s fault. It was too much, she had to step away. She could go back to picking through the remains of her home another time.  She walked over to the small pond. It was mostly intact aside from debris floating on the surface. That was... something at least. The Blades had told her that she’d have to move out, the area would going to be searched and investigated. Maybe she could rebuild someday. Maybe. Probably not. The cost of rebuilding a home from scratch was more gil than she had. She knew she could ask for help from Oni or Lloire or someone but... that wouldn’t be hers. It wouldn’t be her home.  It was the close of a chapter of her life. The end of this era. Maybe something better would be coming along. Maybe something worse. Yet it was the end. Soon it would be Starlight and... she sniffled. It would be Starlight and she wouldn’t even have a home to decorate. That hurt to think about. She missed Lain. She knew he’d be back soon. Lain. Her house was gone. it was gone but... her home wasn’t. He was still here, still himself, still alive. She remembered how she’d felt at the moment her house had exploded. Not pain at the loss of the building but that all-consuming fear he’d been inside. He was her home. That was the first thing that took some of the pain away. The building was gone, the things were gone, but the most important thing was still there. It was the close of this story. Yet the best thing about ending a story? You could always start a new one.

Prompt 29: Dote the Devil
Tumblr media
“S-so you’ve b-been working on th-that since you came b-back?”  Yuti asked as she knelt down near the door, surveying the frame with a few scattered papers near her. Mana was sitting on top of the counter, knees bent and crossed as she leaned forward and scrawled on pieces of parchment. There were papers everywhere, although there was some semblance of organization with them. She nodded in response, tapping the end of the quill at her lips.
“Yes. I wrote down several notes on a trip for him- ah, the friend- but I need to expand on it.” She shook her head, “I’m lucky he hasn’t stopped by for it yet.”
“Th-that’s nice of y-you! If… you don’t m-mind me asking, wh-what kind of notes?”
Mana hesitated before she glanced over at Yuti and smiled brightly, “Oh just a bit of history. He has a very strange hobby.”
Yuti nodded, the curiosity not fading from her gaze but she seemed to catch onto Mana’s lackluster summary and turned her attention back to the door.
Things had been eventful to say the least. Mana felt a tad guilty for hiring Yuti to come and redo the wards on her shop, but the Raen had a sneaking suspicion that the Miqo'te woman appreciated the distraction. Yuti’s house had recently been lost. The two of them were content to work on their own endeavors in the same space, although Mana had insisted that they stay on the main floor of the shop. Downstairs would have been far more comfortable with actual couches and a fireplace to sit by, but the Au Ra was avoiding letting anyone down there. Her last visitor had thoroughly wrecked the downstairs doorway and everything along one of the walls and she did not feel like explaining herself. It would have just caused more problems than it was worth. She could have blamed it on the burglary, she supposed but two people would have known that to be a lie.
Yuti was a kind soul though and was content to stay above. Security wards were a bit too complicated for Mana to use, since she could not activate nor control them, but it helped to have an alarm and something to help against the weather. So they worked diligently, although her mind wandered as she absently elaborated on her notes. It was busy work mostly and it didn’t require a lot of thought to expand on her shorthand in a way that Kolven would understand. She still read the words that she had written- in some ways it did have history, although it was the sort that she didn’t want anyone knowing she had gathered together.  The information was available to all who knew where to look back at the library, but when notes from certain books were piled together… well, it looked suspicious. She hoped it helped him. A part of her stomach twisted though- this information… was it really going to be useful?
She had never thought about the void or voidkin before. Not until she’d found out about Kolven’s eye. There had only been one incident in her life where such monsters had given her a scare, but she was too young to remember that. Her father had never elaborated either, but she still could piece together brief flashes of memory. Large leathery wings. Stinging eyes. A gnawing hunger. Anger.
Eyes.
Mana paused in her writing and looked up, glancing over her shoulder towards the back workroom. Alchemy was not all about plants. True alchemy, especially when delving into less than savory concoctions, could take pieces from almost everything. Plenty of discoveries had been made by individuals with a penchant for risks and a curiosity of the unknown. If one combined what they knew with what they suspected and didn’t fear a little risk and experimentation, perhaps anything was possible.
Anything.
It clicked. The answer or at least the riddle was clear to her. She might not be able to lead him to a solution, no but she could make one. This would be unknown territory. It might be dangerous. It would most definitely be new and risky. It was exciting. It was also confusing in a way. Why? Why bother at all? Why did this idea almost… please her?
“You just make everything interesting.” Mana said out loud to herself, a good-natured smirk growing on her features.  Yuti’s ears twitched and she looked up.
“D-did you say s-something?”
“Oh! Just talking to myself a little. A bad habit.”  She smiled at the Miqo'te before with renewed vigor, she slipped from the counter and began gathering up the papers. The old notes were put to a pile that she would keep while she sorted the fresh ones into another one. Her nimble fingers were meticulous about organizing it all, but her mind was also dancing elsewhere.
After that animal had invaded her shop under the guise of a customer, she had been shaken a bit. It had only solidified her reluctance to keep her shop open for business. Lately ever since her return from Coerthas, the desire had begun to allude her. Or maybe it had just grown loud enough for her to hear it. The tumultuous events had disrupted her life and worse yet, thanks to that visitor, she felt snagged in a net she didn’t want to be in. It was unnerving, but she continued to remind herself that she could handle it. She had treaded in dangerous waters before.
This new idea was also precarious, but at least it was of her own making! In the end if it helped Kolven… well, that was the goal, wasn’t it? She would need help though. She was no adventurer or hunter, especially in regards to those demons. Mana couldn’t ask those she knew, considering the danger and the concern that could arise. This was something that Kolven could be suited for, but…
Mana bit her lower lip, pausing as she opened a drawer to rummage through some packaging material. Then she blinked, the idea clear.  A demon to fight a demon. She narrowed her eyes, pausing pensively. They might say no, but if they didn’t then that was her answer. If she was going to be snagged in a net, then she might as well make use of what was caught with her. Mana could spin the terrible deal to at least be… well, a little beneficial.
“R-ribbons?” Yuti had finished working on the door and wandered over to the counter to watch Mana. Out of respect though, her gaze was not focused on the papers and she offered the Raen a smile. Mana paused and looked at her own hands, noting she had taken out a black and red ribbon and cut them into the appropriate length. A laugh bubbled from her and she nodded to Yuti, moving to tie the ribbons around the bundle of fresh papers neatly together.
“It makes it look like a nice gift, doesn’t it? Hopefully he’ll like it.”
“I’m s-sure he’ll appreciate you d-doting on h-him like th-that!”  Yuti nodded, tail swaying behind her as if such an idea brought her delight.
“What? Oh, no! No.” Mana’s vibrant cyan eyes widened as she glanced to Yuti and then the papers while her face grew hot. She waved a hand at the air, rapidly shooing away the very notion that her friend suggested.   “He’ll roll his eyes at it. Probably will think it’s strange. It’s just to tease him!”
“O-oh! S-sorry! I d-didn’t m-mean to assume! I just… s-sorry!” Yuti looked a bit mortified herself at the assumption and squirmed in place, panic upon her features.
“It’s quite alright! He’s… it’s just an arrangement. I like to think we’re friends, but this is… is purely business. A bit.”  Mana cleared her throat and neatly finished tying the ribbons, soon picking up the papers and moving over to set them carefully within the nearby cabinet. Yuti nodded along, ready to accept any explanation at this point.
“I-it m-must keep you b-busy! Th-the arrangements! You s-seem to have a lot with b-business!”
Mana couldn’t help but wince a smile, thinking of bullets, broken horns and lightning. Her neck ached a little bit as she laughed and simply nodded, pushing the papers into place.
Busy or business wasn’t nearly the right word anymore.

Prompt 29: Dote
Tink Sayo glanced left and right as she heard a very distinct sound and saw a small flash of light. She had been walking through Gridania market searching for some tea. To be precise some new tea leaves. She had felt the urge to get something fresh. Maybe something more like she would drink at home. She had the strangest sense of homesickness at the moment. Lord Vachir was keeping watch nearby so certainly it couldn’t be anything very dangerous but she still felt an odd curiosity. Her tail dancing to and fro behind her she stood on her toes and tried to find the source when... Tink Another one! This time she had seen it. Some sort of... floating pink heart had danced across the air. She pursed her lips and frowned. That was strange. Was it some sort of magic? Or.. oh! Oh! She saw it. Set up nearby was a ragged old stand. A rather rumpled looking Miqo’te with greying hair and a large scruffy beard was lounging on a chair behind the stand, smirking to himself. The small crowd in front of it seemed to be purchasing something... As Sayo watched one of the buyers, a young Roe girl slipped what looked like a ring onto her finger. She raised her hand to her mouth and blew... and indeed a tiny pink heart, shining with very faint aetheric energy, gathered atop the ring and then went flying forward where it struck a Miqo’te boy standing nearby with that tink sounds. The boy gave a startled jump and looked over his shoulder. Then he gave a mischievous smile and repeated the gesture, sending a heart right back at the girl. Sayo approached the stall slowly. “Howdy there, little miss! Interested in one of M’natha’s Fabulous Fantastic Dote-Rings? Only 500 gil, lasts for up to a year, ga-RUN-teed to win the hearts of those around you! Not that a lovely lady like yourself needs the help, yes?” He winked. ”... Dote-Ring? I am afraid I do not understand. What is a Dote-Ring?” Sayo asked, feeling rather foolish. Was this an Eorzean custom she didn’t recognize? The man guffawed and slapped the table. “Little lady, a Dote-Ring is one of ol’ M’natha’s fabulous inventions! It’s a no-muss no-fuss way to show your affection to any ol’ folks around you. You just lift your hand...” he said as he did so... “and blow!” A puff of air and the ring sparkled for a moment before a pink heart sped out to tink directly into Sayo’s face. “That seems... improper. Certainly there are many who will misunderstand your intentions?” Sayo said with some concern. “Haw! That’s half the fun, little lady! What’s the worst that can happen? Ya dote a fella who makes your loins quiver an’ he ignores it? Or maybe he comes on over an-” Sayo interrupted him quickly, her cheeks red. “Yes, yes, I understand! You do not need to go into further detail.” The man smirked and held up a small silvery ring. “So, little lady, ya want one?” “No! Of course I do not. Such a thing is tremendously improper.” Sayo huffed quietly. Though truth be told... it seemed fun and harmless, if you ignored the man’s words. Just a tiny little ring that made it easier to express a difficult emotion. She fidgeted with one of her own rings for a moments and then bowed politely. “I am sorry to waste your time, sir.” She started to turn away and then the man reached a hand out to stop her, grabbing her arm. She stiffened in nervous panic, her hands clenching tight. She looked to and fro for Lord Vachir and saw him at once, already pushing through the crowd towards her. At the sight of a very intimidating Xaela though the man quickly let go. “Hey, hey, I didn’t mean nothin’ by it Little Miss. That’s all just sales talk. It’s just a thing for fun. Don’t go readin’ too much into it.” Sayo was still stiff and uncomfortable as she turned to look back at the man. “I... see. I am sorry, your sales talk does not make much sense to me. I would rather know the truth of a product.” She spoke in an overly formal way even for her and as Vachir’s comforting presence loomed nearby she took a small breath of relief. “Yeesh, he’s a biggun’, ain’t he? Alright, alright. Tell ya what, Missy. Here’s a ring for ya free of charge.” He picked up one of the rings on the table and flicked it to her. “No hard feelings, a’ight? I ain’t lookin’ for trouble. Just tryin’ to spread a little love in the world.” Sayo caught it and studied it for a moment before she bowed in response. “All is well, sir. No ill feelings shall be held.” The man gave a halfhearted smile and motioned that maybe she could get out of the way of paying customers. Sayo stepped away from the booth and gave Vachir an appreciative nod of her head. “You should toss that away. It could be dangerous.” Sayo nodded her head in agreement and studied the ring in the palm of her hand for a moment. “I suppose you are right.” Vachir nodded and walked on ahead. Sayo studied the ring for another moment and then closed her hand around it. Tink. (@claihn for mentions.)
