Zatanna had a moment to dive out of the way of the waterfall of volley balls heading her way. The witch wasn't exactly sure how they were placed there but had less than a moment to try and retaliate from Raven's power. Zatanna had the sinking feeling it was based off her voice, she wouldn't run the risk of trying to bind her mind though. It seemed Raven could in fact do it without words.
How was she to win?
Suddenly she wished she had Robin on her side to help give her an advantage or to plan out an attack strategy. Zee took a breath, eyes locking on to her target. She knew one this, she'd need to be absolutely vigilant if she planned on being in this game for long.
Magician's Code: Raven || Zatanna
Before she knew what was happening, her magic had dissipated and Zatanna was free from her reach. Clenching her fists, she waited for an attack but none came. Narrowing her eyes, she tried to get a reading from the girl.
‘She seems afraid… but determined. She’s playing defensive, but the show must go on…’
“Azarath, metrion, zinthos!” Raven chanted in her monotone rasp as her eyes began to glow. She was lifted several yards into the air on a disc of her own black energy as she glared down to the magician below her. Focusing on a shelf of volleyballs off to the side of the room, Raven levitated them and sent them shooting towards her.

Zee let her head rest on his shoulder as she clung, he hugged back but not quite as fiercely, to the acrobat. The moment was nice and comforting, just like it should be. The witch felt the Boy Wonder's head on hers as she loosened her grip.
"We're gonna get him back, Zee." He said softly, squeezing her body just a little bit while he said it, "One way or another."
The added grip from her Robin and the words felt so nice. She squeezed her eyes shut and took a breath. Sometimes it was so hard knowing his body was so close but her father's mind was out of reach. Unfortunately the hug had over done it's threshold, it became crystal clear as Robin slowly let go. The last of the Homo Magi followed suit almost feeling a bit silly for her actions.
"C'mon. You need cupcakes. I need cupcakes. Well, everyone in the world needs cupcakes but especially us."
Zatanna couldn't help but smile and almost giggle at the thought of Robin offering cupcakes. He seemed to be a sweets kind of person. Her eyes followed the young vigilante as he stood and extended a hand to her. The witch reached out and took it as she followed suit.
Maybe they could need cupcakes... after all, who didn't like cupcakes?
This House is Not a Home [Zee&Robin(YJ)]
He knew precisely what he was doing. Zatanna had taken the conversation to a depressing and self condemning place. Robin was working on pulling it from that place. One thing Batman had taught him after his parents died, especially once he became Robin, was to never forget. What Alfred had taught him, was to remember his parents at their best, because that is how they would have wanted it. No one wants to be remembered as a lifeless husk.
"Use it as fuel, but not as a memorial." Alfred had told him.
He let Zatanna hug him tight, and he reciprocated. It wasn't hard for him to do. He let her rest her head on his shoulder and he simply held her. He shut up for a second and he allowed the feeling between them to engulf his embrace. Taking a deep breath, he lightly rested his head on hers.
"We're gonna get him back, Zee." He said softly, squeezing her body just a little bit while he said it, "One way or another."
He wasn't gone yet, he wanted to say. But Zee wasn't Wally, the work of figuring out how to do it wouldn't have been a comfort to her like it would to his best friend. Besides, knowing that Zatara couldn't physically be there even though he wandered around the League HQ as Fate was probably even more unnerving to her. So he let the thought die there.
He let go of the embrace slowly, "C'mon. You need cupcakes. I need cupcakes. Well, everyone in the world needs cupcakes but especially us." He stood and put his hand out for her to follow him. They're superheroes. They can handle a red velvet cupcake, the most melancholy cupcake of all the pastries.

Zee's hand instinctively moved to her shoulder, holding the reassuring hand to her. It was a tether to something real, something that made everything feel so real. The witch wouldn't let the appendage go, not as long as Robin would let her hold it. The  girl gave Robin a sad but appreciative smile. A part of her desperately wanted to be closer to him, hug him and just let the entire world melt away to where it was the two of them dealing with loss.
Robin seemed to have no idea of her thought process as he went along with his father's story. She found her giving a more genuine smile with each passing moment. The witch's body moving a bit closer to Robin, waiting for him to first before she'd make her ultimate move. Maybe it wasn't right to make any sort of move while they were talking about something so pain but in the end the pain made them what they were.
When Robin finished talking she immediately hugged the Boy Wonder. Her teeth biting her lip until she uttered a few small words of thanks to the small vigilante for his support and just listening to her. Robin knew he was a life saver and a good listener; everyone knew that. It was common knowledge throughout the entire Super Hero community but to Zatanna it felt like he was the only one that understood, the only that would ever understand her pain.
Maybe it was a bit selfish but she was okay with it being just like that.
This House is Not a Home [Zee&Robin(YJ)]
Robin listened intently while Zatanna spoke of her father. He knew a thing or two about respecting the memory of the dead. He lightly squeezed her shoulder when she expressed how much she missed him, and scooted just a tiny bit closer to her.
"My dad liked to work on cars." He replied not looking at her, "On days that we weren't- ...er doing anything, he would spend a day in the garage listening to opera and covering himself with grease just trying to perfect the little truck we had. It wasn't much to look at, but it always purred."
Robin couldn't tell her the best part. John Grayson would wear his circus uniform while he did it. "Work clothes are work clothes." He would say to both Mary and Mr. Haly. So he would look up from the truck, belting perfect opera notes to match the record player, the grease on his face matched the color of his big mustache and he would pretend to be in front of an audience who adored his every move.
"You're okay." Robin said softly, looking back at her with a consoling smile.

Zatanna shut her eyes taking a breath as her mind went over the things she knew about her father. She wouldn't give up, she couldn't be the last of the Homo Magi and be weak. What would her father say? She needed to be strong. She needed to to this no matter how painful it was. The witch felt a bit spurred on by Robin when he declared if it was too painful they could stop talking.
"He liked to read books, in Italian. Sometimes he'd read them aloud whenever I'd walk around and entrance me with the language. He spoke his natural tongue with such a delicate palette. It put my horrible Italian to shame, it put most people's Italian to shame. It was the way he spoke... it was like drinking a fine wine, it was smooth and rich... I don't know how to describe it enough to do it justice." The teen witch opened her eyes and ran her hand through to slightly wavy black hair to regain a bit of bearing in the world. She could do this, she had to do this.
"I miss him, Robin... I miss him so much." She whispered.
This House is Not a Home [Zee&Robin(YJ)]
Reading her body language once more, Robin frowned. He had meant to have Zatanna tell him things about her father that made her comfortable, and it was supposed to be a soothing grieving exercise. It helped him when he remembered his parents. The way he would watch them hold hands basically everywhere they went. John Grayson drank his coffee pitch black and super strong, while Mary drank strong tea.
Robin looked down for a second, then let the silence permeate the room. He used it to his advantage and without making a sound both vocally and with his body he got up and sat next to her on the couch, lightly putting a hand on her shoulder.
"We don't have to talk about it anymore, if its still too tender." He tried to smile reassuringly. He was also afraid to go ahead and change the subject because he didn't want to come across as rude or insensitive. So he let her make the move.

Zatanna was stunned for a moment. Did Robin actually just ask her to tell him about him? That couldn't be right. Maybe she was lost or something similar to that fault. She blinked, opening her mouth before shutting it again. Robin wanted to know about the real Giovanni Zatara. The man that the Justice League didn't know.  Zee couldn't help but feel her hands tighten into each other, trying to find a way to decline Robin. Gosh, she really wanted to decline but instead she found herself talking. Something she didn't think she'd do for a long time after her father's Dr. Fate disappearance.
"He... was over bearing sometimes. It was understandable though but... sometimes it was ridiculous. I wasn't allowed to go hang out with friends unless they had an extensive background check on them and both their parents. It was really unbearable sometimes... but I see now that it was in my best interest. Even if it was a little bit too annoying to be seen in it's correct light." Zee sighed, shoulders slumping a bit as she took another breath. This was stuff he had to know but what else could she say about him?
Then again what did she want to tell Robin about her father? What could she be willing to say. Did she even want to go on? Thinking about him made her chest ache with pain, a pain she didn't want to face that was so strongly attached to the memories of her father. Her head and eyes tilted down to her lap. The witch didn't feel up to even looking at the Boy Wonder anymore.
This House is Not a Home [Zee&Robin(YJ)]
Robin watched her expression and read her. He narrowed his eyes slightly behind his glasses and sipped his tea. He watched whatever it was she was going to say leave her presence and he grimaced slightly.
While she explained to him the reason she had come to the cave today, he looked down at his almost gone tea. "Tell me about him." He said.
Robin knew all sorts of things about Giovanni Zatara; he'd spent years reading the files Batman and the League had on basically everyone. He knew he was around 40, black hair, green eyes. He could see the resemblance in his daughter, but her soft features explained to him that her mother was someone incomparable. Robin knew that Zatara was Italian but moved to New York City. He also knew that Zatara didn't have to say his spells backward in order to access his magics, he was experienced.
"But don't tell me the stuff I already know. What was the man like? Who was Giovanni Zatara?"

Robin speaking about his past felt so surreal. Of course, she had known they were in similar situations. When finding another that shared a pain similar to your own you just know. There's no rhyme or reason to it, something inside of you just tells your 'they suffer just as you' and then you cling to them hoping with their help you can float on your own again. That they'll be your lifesaver and you can hope to help them in the same situation.
Maybe that's why he was so understanding about all of this. Zee couldn't help but feel a bit happy knowing he was letting her in a bit. He was giving and taking just as she was from their friendly relationship. This bit of trust wouldn't be lost with her, she'd treasure the fact she knew a little bit more about his history.
This, what was happening between the two, was how it should be; without the masks obviously. Masks always created a conflict or so she had witnessed them cause from time and time again. The witch made careful attention to listen to Robin and his words that rang so true.
"I guess what I'm trying to say is, you're not alone."
Zatanna felt a soft smile on her face after the words were spoken by her younger teammate. There wasn't any doubt in her mind that she'd ever be alone, not while the Team was together. Not while everyone was so willing to help one another. She had a momentary need to say something but it was lost to her in the next moment. What Robin had said was pretty profound. How could she hope to reply to that?
"I know I'm not. That's why I came here," Her eyes moved across the room, absorbing every bit of detail she possibly could. Saving every minuet aspect of her second home, "Sometimes... you just have to be... reminded of what you have... so what you lost doesn't seem so bad." But it did and does. The hole her father left in her heart was painfully large. She'd fib a bit, say she was okay when she didn't feel alright. Sometimes she wondered if she ever wanted to be okay. Wouldn't moving on make her stop remembering her father and everything he stood for?
This House is Not a Home [Zee&Robin(YJ)]
Robin tried hard to focus on making his tea just right and listening to Zatanna, instead of how cute she was when she blushed. He stirred his tea with a honey stir stick and listened to her try to find what she was trying to say. He nodded softly, finally finding his place on the floor with his back against the couch holding his tiny tea plate and cup in his hands.
How could he express what it was like for him without revealing his identity? He could remember being a little acrobatic terror for poor Alfred. Climbing up clocks, swinging and leaping from chandeliers, waking up from nightmares in that first few months. Especially before Bruce had told him the secret that really bonded them together; their shared need for justice.
Also, how to do it without sounding pompous, like he'd learned Dick Grayson was at school with Artemis?
"I know what you mean. Before Batman adopted me, I was taken in by a great englishman who lived in a house so huge that there were times I thought I'd never have to hear from him again." He sipped his tea with his pinky up, just as he was taught, "But I was like eight then. Just when I thought I was completely alone and never thought I'd see, or want to see, another soul again there he was reminding me that it isn't good to be alone. We weren't made for it."
Robin took a second to think about what he wanted to express next, and he smiled and looked over to Zatanna, "I'm older now. I've got all sorts of friends. I don't exactly have a real family, but I do have you guys. Just like you have us."
He didn't really know what to say about Zatara's sacrifice for his daughter. Sure, it was her fault a little; she was doing what she thought would be for the greater good. For Zatara though, SHE was the greater good. Robin knew that there was a way to get him out of that helmet, and he didn't know much about magic, there just had to be.
He sipped his tea, then bit into a cookie. "I guess what I'm trying to say is, you're not alone."

Zee nodded along with Robin’s statement, moving her knees to a more Indian style instead of her previous position. There wasn’t a need to hide if Robin was here. What would there to be hidden from him anyway? The loneliness that Robin understood? No. There wasn’t a need to even attempt guarding herself. It was easier letting him in and helping her move on just like she’d do if he ever gave her the opportunity. Risks pushed you forward into life.
The witch watched as he curiously looked back over to the T.V. He snapped his fingers, effectively regaining her attention. The magician’s head snapped back as she blinked rapidly and nodded dumbly. Where else would she go? Home? No, that was the whole reason she was <i>here</i> but she took back the thought the moment she had stated it. She did have to think about the fellow teen being a show off. If his little display of prowess was anything to go by. She giggled as he fled to do whatever his ingenious little mind came up with.
The witch adjusted herself to leaned onto the couch, her head resting on the top of it as she barely listened to the T.V. She was suddenly now more preoccupied with thinking about whatever Robin might have been doing. She honestly hoped she hadn’t been ditched. That would have been… what did he like to say? Asterous. It would have not been asterous on her end. By the end of her thought process that left her with an almost endearing smile she found Robin talking again, jerking her out of her thoughts.
“Alright. Now tell me all about it.”
The witch sat up, looking at the tea and then Robin. A warmth filled her cheeks as she gripped some of the fabric of her pants. The acrobat hadn’t honestly needed to do this but the thought that he did this for her… felt nice. She really liked the feeling.
“I…” What should she say? What could she say? Sometimes she just wished that Robin could just out right read her mind when M’gann wasn’t in the room.
“The Manor’s too big and too empty. I swear sometimes I wake up and I can just hear him… but it's nothing and I just can’t help but know this is all my fault." She just laid out the most she felt like she could even attempt to place in his shoulders. Her light eyes looking at the tea but shying away from it. It was such a nice gesture but she didn't feel right about taking it without the customary offering.
This House is Not a Home [Zee&Robin(YJ)]
Robin didn’t pretend to know a whole lot about girls. He knew that apparently they liked him a lot, and he knew pretty ones. One thing he knew was then when panda’s were on, something was wrong. No matter what the subject matter of said television panda was on.
He listened to her and nodded softly, “Yeah, I don’t blame you.” was all he said. He knew the feeling. Luckily he had Alfred, and Bruce when he wasn’t being Batman. But she wouldn’t have known that.
“I think everyone else is doing their whole school thing. I was here working on some weapons.” Robin answered her thought, though he didn’t hear it, in order to move the conversation.
He looked down at his feet, then to the pandas again. He thought for a second and then snapped his fingers, flipping backward off of the couch. “Be right back.” He said dashing off toward the kitchen area. He poured water into a kettle, and began boiling it. In a few minutes he came back with perfectly steeped english tea and cookies. Just how Alfred taught him. Robin brought them back, set them on the coffee table along with some cream, sugar, and honey on a tray.
“Alright. Now tell me all about it.” He said beginning to put milk and honey in his.

Zatanna shifted herself, Raven knew something about her magic while she only knew whatever the other witch used was dark and evil. The user herself didn't look or feel evil but the magic that electrified the air around her felt heavy with fear and emotions that leaned to a more horrible and disturbing side of the emotional spectrum.
Canary had started their match and Zee made sure to be prepared for the worst. Light and Dark magics didn't tend to like each other very well. Light wanted to purify while the darkness wanted to corrupt. It took her a moment to realize there was something on her legs. The witch tried to jump away from it but found herself stuck. The other witch hadn't used words? Zatanna couldn't fight against that. Obviously this meant Raven was a much more powerful witch than herself. She couldn't hope to win this fight but she could try to last as long as possible.
"Ssenkrad eht pu thgil!" Zee moved her hand in a circle as light began to glow around her legs, effectively rendering the tendrils of darkness keeping her in place useless. The pitch in her stomach seemed to grow but she wouldn't forfeit the match, not yet. Even if her father would chastise her for it in the future (when she eventually saved him from Nabu!) She didn't know how to back down even in horribly unbalanced situations.
For now she'd play defensive and let the dark witch own the field of play.
Magician's Code: Raven || Zatanna
Raven observed the girl in front of her intently and took a moment to understand her method of spellcasting. It was simple magic, but effective. And clearly it took a lot of practice to master— not everyone could chant backwards at the drop of a hat in the heat of battle.
She was growing more and more curious by the second. Raven’s magic and Zatanna’s magic were two entirely different forces. Her own craft was dark thanks to her heritage, and this girl in front of her’s aura was light as light could get.
This was going to get interesting. Lifting her hood and assuming offensive stance, she waited for Black Canary’s call. “Alright, girls. I don’t really know anything about magic, but let’s keep this a fair fight. On my count. 3…..2…..1, GO” Smirking, Raven’s eyes began to glow as she summoned her black energy and sunk into the floor, reappearing behind her opponent.
“A magician’s fight is always a fair fight” she chided, as her black energy began to wrap around Zatanna’s legs.
