I may be reading too much into it, but does anyone else think the guy who recruited Twilight for WISE is the informant in the Cruise Arc? They look really similar and they both work in providing intelligence. I also think it's interesting that despite being his recruiter the guy wasn't Twilight's commanding officer: in fact we don't see him in the present day WISE at all. If this is indeed the same person, maybe he betrayed WISE eventually?

To be honest, when it comes to Anya, I would be fine either way. I think the author has long established that Anya, regardless of academic performance, is Very Good at what she wants to do and very happy when she does it. I think she can find satisfaction no matter what route she chooses. But to me, as of now, I simply can't see Damian be happy becoming an Imperial Scholar.

The thing about Anya and Damian is that as similar as they are, they're also obviously foils to one another, and that includes their desire to earn Stella and become Imperial Scholars. 

Initially, it's presented as though they are driven by a similar desire: pleasing their fathers. Anya, by fulfilling Plan B; Damian, by proving himself worthy of the Desmond name. And it makes sense! They're both hurt kids who are seeking the love and approval of a Dad whose love they can’t fully believe in, love they’re terrified of losing: something Anya recognizes and empathises with, time and again.

But over the course of the series, upon closer inspection, it's clear that their motivations for earning Stella are completely different, and the story so far has very carefully built up the contrast between them.

Anya is naturally intelligent and curious. It has been pointed out plenty of times by other fans already, but she's younger than her peers and grew up without the comforts and advantages they had– but manages to not only keep up with them, but improve at a very quick rate and genuinely excel in certain fields. She is also very resourceful, and knows how to use her powers to her advantage! It is made clear that despite struggling in school, Anya is an incredibly capable child. But she does struggle in school. She does poorly on tests and can’t abide by the extremely strict rules of the academy. She struggles with socialisation and is insecure about her powers. And so she is sometimes discouraged by her poor performance and unmotivated to try at all. As much as she desires it, it’ll take her a long time to be Imperial Scholar material. But she does want to be one.

For Anya, by becoming an Imperial Scholar she helps Plan B and thus gains Loid's approval, yes: but it's also motivated by a genuine desire for positive change. The whole reason she helps out is for world peace, something that she has been wanting to help with since Day 1. This is a four or five-year-old, and she not only comprehends this lofty goal but regularly tries to aid in accomplishing it, often successfully and without any praise or acknowledgement. She also helps in Loid’s missions, helps out Yor in the Cruise Arc, helps both in sealing their identities, helps rescue Bond, helps in a hostage situation… the list goes on. 

It is most clearly highlighted in her reaction to earning her first Stella– rather than the prospect of a prize, what pleases her first is the fact that she can help people with her powers. When Yuri tutors her, she studies hard not for higher scores, but at the realisation that studying will help her bring about change. And that’s why her talk with Henderson in Chapter 64 is so important– because she wants to work hard and be an Imperial Scholar. She comes back home excited to study! You can tell it is something she wants, all on her own!

Anya possesses genuine ambition and drive. She is not doing it only out of a need for external validation (that’s not to say she still doesn’t yearn for it) – it is clear she genuinely wants to make a difference, wants to help people, wants to be great for herself and for others. 

Compare that to Damian, who, bless him, has one and one reason only– to gain others’ approval… mostly his father’s. 

Unlike Anya, Damian is more likely on the path to become an Imperial Scholar-- he studies harder, he's more sure of himself, he gets better results. Also unlike Anya, though, it is unclear if Damian actually wants to be an Imperial Scholar for himself.

Damian excels at school. He tries so hard. But it's all with one goal in mind-- get his Father to notice him. So everything from exams to a simple arts and crafts project turns into a quest for excellence, for first prize, for his father’s approval. He’s six years old and denies himself any joy just to get his father to spare him a single glance. 

A lot of this is attributed, of course, to the fact that Anya has good parents who just want her to be happy– yes, Loid wants her to perform well for his mission, but he does not make her feel worthless or incompetent, only encourages her to improve and acknowledges his mistake when he pressures her. He is genuinely proud of her achievements even outside of his mission, and so is Yor.

Meanwhile, Damian’s parents are… yeah. Not exactly the most loving guardians. He has already learnt, at this young age, that their love is conditional. So he drives himself crazy trying to meet these conditions, and is overjoyed at any scraps of affection he receives in return.

Everything he does is to get his father’s attention. Compare Anya’s genuine desire to achieve world peace and be a hero and change the world, versus Damian’s reasoning for wanting to become a politician in Chapter 39– because his father is one.

Similarly, his quest to be an Imperial Scholar is not for his sake, but his dad’s, his family’s. He wants to be an Imperial Scholar because his brother is one, because his father attends the meetings, because getting Stella means getting acknowledgement. That’s all there is to it. He does not want it for himself.

Contrast the aftermath of him getting his first Stella to Anya’s. Anya’s Stella made her proud of herself. Damian’s sent him spiraling. He is initially happy to have received one, but in the end it comes down to his father praising him for it. And when he does get it, or a semblance of it at least, it makes him so obsessed with earning more that he neglects his well-being. He stays up late studying and he refuses to go hang out with friends and all he does is think about earning more stars. He’s six.

I think so long as he is chasing after this position, he will be trapped in his desperation for his father’s approval. 

And this is something I think his character arc has been foreshadowing all along– that Damian will have to give up trying to chase after academic success and Stella Stars if he wants to be happy, because that success is not something he genuinely wants on his own. That he will eventually pick the genuine love and friendship he has in his life over empty status. We see it in him giving up MVP for Anya’s sake. We see it in the camping arc when he is taught to relax and live instead of obsessing over studying. We see it in him losing at cards on purpose, choosing his affection for Anya over bettering his chances at becoming Imperial Scholar. 

Which is why it would be so good if he willingly gave his goal up and never became an Imperial Scholar. Not because he can’t do it, because he doesn’t have the ability or because he couldn’t keep up. But because he doesn’t need it anymore. He doesn’t need to be first or the best or the greatest, but just be. 

I actually really really hope that Damian does not ever become an imperial scholar
