maybe instead of making another post about hugo or tolstoy or whoever who went off on “unrelated tangents” in their books instead of focusing only on charaters and plot development… why dont we take a step back? maybe dont believe the book editors on twitter who are trying to persuade you that books need to start a certain way (in medias res -_-), that you must cut out 90% of your adverbs, that you need to cut out every scene that doesnt ‘fit’ your narrative perfectly etc since all these people are only saying this because theyre paid to discover new hunger games or w/e.
novels are genuinely so much more than snappy YA books you can read in a single afternoon… why are you so afraid to just. indulge. engage. why do you mind reading the war scenes in a book called. war and peace. why do you mind victor hugo taking you on a trip through paris history. why do you expect every book to hold your hand and walk you through a Sharp and Well-Defined Plot with no side quests? live a little, babe!!

Right language nerds these tips are going to be controversial but bare with me:
Read fan fiction/online published literature in your target language. These will be cheap, easily accessible, pretty low level of reading ability is needed to read most and they come in short manageable chunks.
Graphic novels, manga and webcomics are your new best friend. The visuals will help you piece together context and the writing is fairly short and usually day-to-day conversations are more common but that might be because I’m a massive romcom lover.
People will tell you to listen to your target language’s pop music and yes I agree you should for culture purposes but indie artists often have easier to understand music because of the lower level of production meaning the instruments are less distracting.
Yes, you do need a textbook when you are a beginner. The textbook is a necessity for structure to make sure you are actually understand grammar and vocabulary etc. You also need a “teacher”, this can be your grandmother or best friend or a stranger who you can have conversations with, who can correct you, and who will answer your desperate calls for help when you understand nothing of what you just read.
If you are reading fanfics and comics you should also be reading news articles. Most broadcasters have Instagram and Twitter. I promise you if you want to study in the country of your target language read the news in that language someone will try to talk to you about it and you will sit there like a lemon and look like an idiot.
If you are 16 or older you should learn how to swear. If you do not learn now, you will from native speaker friends very quickly.
Thank me later. Remember your language learning does not have to be pretty and be filled out in little journal with pastel highlighters whilst visiting Parisian Cafés. Learn what you want to learn. If you are legal and like to read erotica read it in your target language as long as you are having fun and reaching your language goals no one can stop you. Read horoscopes, watch horror, write about your flower garden on a blog because I guarantee atleast a couple hundred native speakers will be doing these anyway.

From Beginner to Intermediate: an intense plan for advancing in language
Introduction
I've studied Spanish at school for 3 years and now I'm at a low B1 level. I can actually understand pretty well while listening or reading but I can't communicate fluently.
This plan will include vocabulary build up, some grammar revision, a lot of listening, reading and writing. And could be used for the most languages, not only Spanish.
Plan
Every day:
Conjugate one verb in present, past and future tenses
Make a list about 10 - 30 words long
Create flashcards with them and start learning them (I use Quizlet for flashcards)
Revise yesterday's set of flashcards
2-3 times a week:
Read an article or a few pages from a book
Write a few sentences about anything in your target language
Listen to one episode of podcast (at least one)
Once a week or every two weeks:
Watch a movie in your target language, preferably animated movie as the language used there is easier. You can watch with subtitles
Grammar exercises
Translate some short text
Once a month:
Write something longer, like an essay or report, on chosen topic
Additionally:
Talk to yourself, to your friends, to your pets
Text with someone
Look at the transcription while listening to the podcast for second time
Repeat what you hear (in podcast or movie)
Check words you don't know from the listening and reading
Read out loud
Listen to music in your target language - you can even learn the text and sing along
Watch YouTube in your target language
Change your phone language to the one you're learning
Think in you target language!!!
***This is very intense plan for self-learners, you don't have to do all of these things in the given time. Adjust it to your own pace. I'll try to stick to this, if I have enough time.***

Random but can you suggest a few obscure topics I might write on regarding the culture of the sub-continent? Like I read one post which was a discourse on tea, like just random things which scream DESI! I just wanna write essays lol
Of course; here you go. It’s not all things that scream desi, but they’re fairly obscure topics for you to look into, and from what I’ve read about them, they’re all super interesting
the coming of potatoes and pav to india
closely related, working class food in mumbai and why it is like it is (this is a personal favourite)
the udupi migration within india and the ensuing diaspora
thugees in colonial india
the ghee scandal in kolkata (another favourite for the complete unexpectedness of it all; more in this essay)
parsi dog riots in bombay (it is every bit as absurd as it sounds; more in this absolute gem of an essay)
cricket and its growth in the subcontinent; i particularly like reading about cricket and politics in Pakistan, it’s really interesting
the (rapid) growth of bhojpuri cinema: highly interesting in terms of social/cultural history
the centrality of the pressure cooker to indian food culture & how is it a distinctive common cultural trait across the indian diaspora
milk. particularly the anand/amul/cooperative sector story
weapons technologies in medieval indian ocean
closely related: the chola navy
cultural exchange across the bay of bengal to and from southeast asia
penal/convict colonies of the british empire in india
the ahom kingdom and their defeat of the mughals (it’s a classic underdog story, and i absolutely love it)
caste hierarchies, norms, and clothing choices (especially check out the story of Thathri and her adultery scandal from Kerala)
rodda arms heist (it is very cool)
precolonial, pre-coming-of-europe cotton networks in india
the bindi
the varanasi sari industry
also literally the origin of every sari style
this is not exhaustive, and is largely structured by my experience and the general directions my nerdiness has taken, but i hope you find something you like :)

i genuinely hate when people will make a long post and then put a tl;dr at the bottom that just says “go back and read the fucking post it’s not that long” LIKE,,,,,, TL;DRs ARE ACCESSIBILITY RESOURCES YOU ASSHOLES???? LITERALLY IN THE SAME VEIN AS IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS??????? you HONESTLY do not have to be such a fucking dick about it that you would take an accessibility resource and then twist it just so you can be passive aggressive, honey your neurotypical is showing
