Le Spleen
And I remember searching down city streets and down back alleys, In sewers and in hotel rooms, in cold and in rain, Others searched with me, pale, pasty wisps of men, Who broke down and cried as sirens drowned their voices, Retaining just enough strength to crawl back into the holes that spawned us, Where we sought enlightenment from the dark outside, Through pills and booze, powders and smoke, All together in our loneliness and alone in our togetherness. The squalid squat where we lurked saw people come and go As the system reclaimed some and others rebelled, We all had dreams that lodged in our throats and bursts forth as screams. Philosophy and art spiralled up with the smoke of our cigarettes, But remained trapped against the ceiling, blotting out the low-watt bulb, Like the spirit of the dead, trapped in rigor mortis, unwilling to let go. Rock and roll rioted round the room, to drown outside calls of doom. A ragtag band of cynics, optimists, realists, idealists, romantics, for whom the glass was seldom full, But if it was, it would be swiftly drained. Most nights were spent in the interminable cold of the city, Staggering, high, from lovers’ beds or dilapidated dance halls, Stumbling, staggering, swaggering, secure in our superiority, paralytic, Searching again, always looking, never seeing, refusing to see, Loathe to love, reluctant to hate, Streetlights, traffic lights, prostitutes, ladyboys We skinny acts, addicts, to worldly pleasures and worldly pain, Readily used, readily abused, picked up, thrown aside. Tumbling back inside, to hide from the dawn, Living one eternal night, so as to avoid seeing ourselves in a new light, We tricked ourselves into believing that time did not own us, Killing time, in the dingy lair, imagining victory in time’s death, half-living, Living life to the fullest, not using youth, but abusing youth. We had turned on, tuned in and dropped out, And all we had to show for it were perverse ramblings, written And walked, barefoot, bleeding, vomiting, cursing, always searching, Cigarette burns commemorating lessons never learned.
Deep within I buried the knowledge that this is all there is, The search was never on, because I had found myself, Lost, lonely, cold, poor, but ecstatically strung-out in the eyes of my contemporaries, In the old basement.

Petrichor (The smell before rain, the blood in my veins)
She comes. Past the people crowded round cocktails, Through the blue haze of cigarettes, And the waning daylight. She comes.
Hear her, Talk into the room like the Sudden onset, Of summer rain, The pallor is in her eyes, and the scent struggles in her hair, The land is parched, It has been too long.
And then, She tumbles into the room, all eyes, and bones and seafoam, All you, all falling out.
See her, An eternally ephemeral smile kisses her lips As her laugh flits from window to window, looking for a way out. Hear her breathe, In and out, like sacred sin, Or at least, that’s what it hurts like.
Fade out. - Chaos she is, blossoming stars, wrecking ships. Listen to her spill sleep’s secrets across the wooden floor, and roses bloom where the words dream, Lost in the innumerable chambers of her mind, hide from time. - Fade back in.
She is etched into blissful skin now, Like memories of youth, gone too soon, The morning calls her home.
The storm is gone.
Remember her, Her, the first time. Her ghost, Looks, Looks right through you, and smiles with Those eyes that made men wild. It has been too long, the land is parched, Loved nothing more than her memories.

Throw open the window
On delayed telephones, when morning falters in Afternoons and evenings and I Wake up as you Fall into sleep, please Tell me, Of the kiss that I forgot, drowned as it was in reckless youth, Drowned as I was, in alcohol and you. - I walk down to the Sound, in darkness, And dip my feet In silver silence, And hear, far off, a muffled thunderstorm. As an exile I stand On the edge Of a future that fades like flowers at the end of spring, or The glowing embers of the failing day. - In a sky blue room I talk to you, Of memories, teased from moonbeams, That you have weaved into my grief. - You are not here, yet I remain. It is not you that haunts this place, But I. I have packed away our time into boxes and bags, because It is easier to forget that you were ever here, If I can pretend that I wasn’t Either. - The hills of my home are as foreign to me as The expanse of your frontier back, that I Traced like a map, With my lips and forlorn fingertips. - I will write you bitter letters, To attempt to kindle feeling in burning words on paper, like your lips did When they breathed flowers into my thin skin. Do not read them for all they say is; That hell is not the absence of God But only, The absence of you. - S.C.
