Hey there, came across your blog yesterday and I really like your stuff!
I’m just curious, how do you keep yourself safe while dumpster diving, like accounting for coming into contact with biohazards and sharp objects?
Food waste really upsets me and I’m curious to try dumpster diving at grocery stores and what not, but I’m unsure of how to make sure I’m not trespassing, because the shopping centres in my area are heavily monitored with cameras!
Thanks for your time, keep doing what you do!
If you want to start diving, I would first look up any local laws for your area. Town laws will usually state what is legal and illegal, and you can go from there. If anyone ever stops or questions you, having this information is helpful.
For my area, diving is legal as long as I'm not A. Trespassing, B. Breaking open locks, or C. Illegally dumping (putting my own trash in). Trespassing is usually determined by if there are signs up that say "private property" or "no trespassing" or something similar. One place here also has a sign that says ~ "This trash is property of [store] and we will procecute people who take stuff" so I also avoid them. A lot of places have similar laws, so you may just have to look out for signs to be in the clear. I have dived where there are cameras with no problem, because they had no signs, the dumpsters were unlocked, and I wasn't dumping or leaving a huge mess.
Of course plenty of people dive illegally too, but this is up to everyone's own comfort. If going to a spot makes you feel concerned or unsafe, it probably isn't worth it. And even if you are legally in the clear, if someone asks/ tells you to leave, it is typically better to just go than to fight with them.
As for physical safety, I cannot reccomend enough to wear thick gloves, like gardening gloves. These can help protect against sharp objects and damp/gross stuff. Long sleeves are also helpful. Some people like to use one of those grabby arm things, not only to extend their reach but also to avoid touching some items directly. If you ever plan to get into a dumpster, make sure you are wearing sturdy, close-toed shoes and long socks/pants. Also be sure you can get back out before getting in, or bring a friend to help if you get stuck.
I've said it before on this blog, but use a flashlight if you are going at night. You don't want to accidentally drop your phone into a dumpster!
Otherwise, safety is very much based on being observant and using common sense. Don't stick your hands into a big unknown trash pile, instead move items methodically, touching what you can see is safe. Wash your hands after and try not to touch your face. Wipe down any objects and thoroughly wash any unwrapped food before eating. Use your own judgement for food items, particularly anything containing dairy or meat. And keep an eye on recalls, in case you find something that was thrown out for good reason.
I hope this answer was helpful and let me know if you have other questions. If you go diving, let me know how it went too! Good luck!

I've been lurking for a while and I gotta ask:
are you familiar with basil and hacks to properly transplant it? I followed the turtorials I found but my [store-bought] basil plants always struggle to take hold of new earth and pots :-(
Despite the much bigger space they always struggle to survive.
Ngl basil is a plant I have historically had problems with, so I don't have hacks specifically for it. If anyone has specific basil tips, get in the comments.
I do have some general transplanting tips though.
- Handle the roots as gently as possible, especially if you need to seperate tangled plants. Additionally, keep them moist while transplanting
- Water the plant right away after transplanting and keep a close eye on moisture, since transferring can cause root damage which makes it harder for plants to stay hydrated. A little bit of wilting is expected because of this
- If moving them outside / to a new location, check that temperatures are warm enough and harden off the plants as needed (help them gradually adjust to new temps)
- Thin the seedlings as needed, since cutting out some of the weakest / smallest plants can allow the others get more nutrients and space to grow stronger
- Be cautious of wind, if moving them outside
Side note: grocery and hardware store plants are unfortunately not always well cared for before you buy them (looking at you Home Depot). They have a higher risk of carrying common diseases and pests, as well as an increased risk of nutrient deficiencies, dehydration, and rootbound issues. Sadly, sometimes these plants are very hard to keep alive even with your best interventions. I would recommend you:
- Check for signs of disease / pests / deficiencies before buying. Yellowing, spotty, or crispy leaves can indicate unhealthy plants
- Transplant immediately after purchasing, so your plant has access to good soil and adequate space right away
Hope this helps! Happy gardening 🌱

From the Freedom Flotilla, April 27 2024:
On Thursday afternoon, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition was contacted by the Guinea Bissau International Ships Registry (GBISR), requesting an inspection of our lead ship – Akdenez. This was a highly unusual request as our ship had already passed all required inspections; nevertheless, we agreed. The inspector arrived on Thursday evening. On Friday afternoon, before the inspection was completed, the GBISR, in a blatantly political move, informed the Freedom Flotilla Coalition that it had withdrawn the Guinea Bissau flag from two of the Freedom Flotilla’s ships, one of which is our cargo ship, already loaded with over 5000 tons of life-saving aid for the Palestinians of Gaza. In its communication informing us of this cancelation, the GBISR made specific reference to our planned mission to Gaza. It also made several extraordinary requests for information, including confirmation of the ships’ destination, any potential additional port calls, and the discharge port for humanitarian aid and estimated arrival dates and times. It further demanded a formal letter explicitly approving the transportation of humanitarian aid and a complete manifest of the cargo. Again, this is a highly unusual move from a flagging authority. Normally, national flagging authorities concern themselves only with safety and related standards on vessels bearing their flag, and are not concerned with the destination, route, cargo manifests or the nature of a specific voyage. Just like when you register your car, the authorities don’t require you to detail to them every place you are going to go with the car. Sadly, Guinea-Bissau has allowed itself to become complicit in Israel’s deliberate starvation, illegal siege and genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Israel is showing the world the extent to which it will go to deny Palestinians the aid they need to stay alive, in direct contravention of International Humanitarian Law, UN Security Council resolutions, and two orders of the International Court of Justice. [...] without a flag, we cannot sail. But, this is not the end. Israel cannot and will not crush our resolve to break its illegal siege and reach the people of Gaza. The people of Gaza and all of Palestine remain steadfast under the most horrific, unimaginable conditions. We take strength from their incredible, inexplicable ability to maintain their humanity, dignity and hope when the world has given them no reason to do so. It is our responsibility to keep that hope alive. WE WILL SAIL.
The Freedom Flotilla, which was set to depart from Turkey on the 27th of April with 5000 tons of life-saving aid, has now been delayed because Israel and the United States has pressured Guinea Bissau to withdraw its flag from the Flotilla's lead ship.
Seeing as how their tactics worked on Guinea Bissau, organizers now fear that Israel and the US will exert the same pressure on whichever country the Freedom Flotilla attempt to register their ship under next.
To help the Freedom Flotilla reach Gaza, please keep an eye out for further updates from the organizers. Right now, as of April 27th, they're asking people to help boost their visibility, and to donate to their member campaigns.
For more info, see their webpage.

They've arrested the Northeastern students and are in the process of moving them off campus
If anyone in the Boston area is looking to help support the encampments, Northeastern students are currently seeking support at Centennial Common and Emerson is looking for jail/court support for the 108 folks arrested last night

If you're struggling with the cost of living right now (reasonable), this is your PSA to...
Google universities/colleges near you.
If you can't get out to more than one, look up which one has the highest tuition.
Look-up when the graduate date is
Drive neighborhoods near the university the week before graduation
So much stuff gets left out on the curb. Wealthy college students tend to prioritize convenience over money, so instead of carefully reselling their perfectly good stuff, they frequently give it away or put it out with the trash because that's easier than moving, reselling, or donating. Take advantage of this.
I furnished pretty much my entire apartment from college giveaways and yardsales.
What I got for free:
Mattress and box springs
2 10 ft area rugs
The massive 9-drawer chest (that has a label on the back that it was custom-made and shipped across the country) that my TV sits on.
Two 13 x 2 ft raised garden beds
My desk - just sanded it down and refinished it.
Three short stools
An organizer rack
Watering can
Tommy Bahama outdoor cooler (retails for $350)
Chairs
Shelves
What I got for cheap:
Two futons for $50
Custom coffee table with storage for $25
Three tall stools for $30

Being a young adult is so strange. You enter a coffee shop. The 20 year old girl waiting behind you cried all night because she just came to a new city for university and she feels so alone. That 27 year old guy over there works a job he is overqualified for, he lives with his parents and wants to move out but doesn't know what to do about it. That one 24 year old dude already has a car, a house, and a job waiting for him once he graduates thanks to his dad's connections. The 26 year old barista couldn't complete his higher education because he has to work and take care of his family. The 28 year old girl sitting next to you has no friends to go out with so she is texting her mother. That couple (both 25 years old) are married and the girl is pregnant. The 29 year old writing something on her laptop has realized that she chose the wrong major so she is trying to start all over. We are not alone in this, but we are actually so alone. Do you feel me

Gotta say, there's something really horrific about hearing pro-israel counter protestors get chummy with the cops and ask them when they're gonna arrest a peaceful crowd of students

i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return
