i taught a baking class for 12 year olds today and we made your garden variety chocolate chip cookies, but i’m a big believer in Questioning Everything and the who/what/where/why/when/how behind things, so the first part of the class was purposely letting the kids do things the wrong way, to show and explain why we do things the way we do.

“why do we bake cookies at 180 for 9 minutes when we could do 400 for 2 minutes?” -enter the godawful lump of coal with a still gross wet and uncooked inside

“why do we have to scoop out little cookies instead of doing the whole tray?” -ok well that one you can technically do if the spread is even. you just end up with one giant, structurally unsound cookie. “PLEASE CAN WE MAKE GIANT COOKIES” (we did make 1 giant tray cookie)

we talked a lot about why consistency is important, but i don’t think it really hammered home until i said “okay everyone gets ONE cookie, that’s fair, right?” and then handed out cookies of hugely varying sizes. + baked one fat lump of a cookie that still wasn’t done at the 9 minutes, vs the regular one i put in that came out charred by the time the first was actually done.

we also made a row of cookies where each one had one single differing ingredient omitted, like a cookie with no flour, or a cookie with no butter, and laid them all out on a single tray to bake together to see how each ingredient affects the outcome.

two of the little girls added cocoa to their cookie doughs until it matched the colour of each others skin to make best friend cookies, and that almost made me tear up a bit 🥺

got briefly distracted (…for over half an hour…) talking about how eggs form when someone cracked an egg and it had 2 yolks

expertly tolerated being asked how old i am (just turned 31 the other day) which was immediately followed by asking if i watched the moon landing live on tv

was so focused on keeping track of all the kids that in the end i forgot to make a cookie for myself, but it’s ok because one of the girls gave me this

Do you any tips about using ms paint?

I think I have few tips

#1Use 500x500 px or bigger canvas size. Any smaller size will make a brush look messy and shit.Here look:

Can you see the difference?? Lineart in 600x600 px is so much smoother

MS Paint Tips & Tricks

here are some of the things i’ve learned while using paint ✨ I mainly use the crayon and marker tool so I’ll be focusing on those two tools

Blending (Crayon)

blending w crayon is super easy! all you have to do is use the eyedropper tool where the two colors join, and you can repeat as necessary to blend it as much as you want

Blending (Marker)

(i chose these awful colors to show the process a little better lol)

since the maker is translucent, it’s a a good tool to find a middle color in general: 

take the second color and lay on the first

use the eyedropper tool to pick up the merged color and hit undo

then use the color u got from the eyedropper and repeat steps 1 and 2 until you’re satisfied with the color

Increase/decrease brush size*

*only works if you have a number pad!! ms paint only offers 4 default sizes, so this is super useful for working on details on a small canvas size / filling in areas on a larger canvas

Increase: CTRL and + | Decrease: CTRL and - (+/- on the number pad)

some brushes can be made significantly larger, like the “natural pencil” with ctrl +

works with all brushes! including the eraser and outline sizes on the line/curve/shape tools

Creating “Masks”

i feel like all old school ms paint users know this already lol but i’m going to include it anyway

Set “color 1″ to the color you want the “mask” to be on and “color 2” as the color you want to replace color 1 with, then use the eraser tool and right click and you’ll stay within color 1

unfortunately it only works well with pixel drawings, so this wouldn’t work if i used the crayon or the colored pencil tool

Ok ok theres something tjat i feel would look absolutely amazing and get a message across. So like you get or steal an infamous blue flag that was made for an orange and you vandalize it and its like written on the flag black lives matter or the symbol for it or a rainbow pride flag (or both) and like a poc is waving it with like a pole maybe idk during a rally and its like really hot blistering heat and like shes making a face and that face is like we want change or something. Yea thats it thats something i want to see lol

as we all celebrate adam rippon and his brilliant performance this past week for the figure team competition at the winter olympics in pyeongchang, i want to remind the universe of the fabulous rudy galindo, a latinx HIV positive gay man who queered the figure skating world more than 20 years ago.

after winning a few junior championships, rudy got a taste of national success skating with kristi yamaguchi, when they won the US national championships in both 1989 and 1990. their partnership soon ended as kristi began her very successful career as a solo skater. rudy’s solo skating career was quite the opposite.

although surviving extreme poverty, rudy’s family had sacrificed everything to support his dream as a figure skater. during the late 80s  and early 90s, rudy struggled personally as two of his coaches and his brother George succumbed to HIV. his sister laura became his coach.

after taking 8 months off from competing, the 1996 US championships were taking place in his hometown of san jose, california. rudy decided to give his skating dream one more shot and decided to compete. he would skate one of the most beautiful and most remembered long programs ever.

with thousands of people cheering for him, rudy became the oldest US  national champion. he became the first out national champion. he became the first mexican-american national champion. that night, rudy became a gawd damn legend!

rudy would go on to win the bronze medal at the world championships. he retired from competing soon after but still skated professionally and chyle, he gave you performances! in april of 2000, he disclosed that he was living with HIV. he skated to “ soon in the clowns” soon after.

“HIV/AIDS is not a death sentence. you can go out there and do what you want.” rudy galindo. he has become an HIV advocate and now coaches kristi yamaguchi’s daughter. and despite not initially having the support of the skating world, rudy is now celebrated as a pioneer.

fun fact: when i was in the hospital w/ a t-cell count of 100, the woman i shared a room with, in an attempt to make me feel better, said, “you know who rudy galindo is? he is so lovely. like you, so lovely.” that shit still stays with me. “if he can survive this, so can you”

much like rudy, i survived and found that place over the rainbow to shine.
