Batman fun fact! Did you know that Scarecrow’s toxin doesn’t always cause fear? Sometimes it does the opposite! In Detective Comics #571, he wields a variant that completely inhibits the biochemical fear response, preventing people from feeling any concern for themselves or using basic common sense. He runs a racket administering it to star athletes, who take huge risks and get badly injured. Then they’re willing to cough up a lot for an antidote. Batman and Robin - here Jason Todd - catch on, but Bruce is dosed with the reverse fear toxin; since his intelligence is his greatest strength, being too overconfident and reckless to think twice about anything makes him his own worst enemy.
This premise was adapted in the Batman: The Animated Series episode “Never Fear”. There we see that with no fear of losing his moral integrity, Bruce becomes cold and merciless to criminals. Robin - here Tim Drake - has to catch somebody he leaves to fall off a building, tie him up to stop him endangering himself and others and give him the antidote to prevent him murdering Scarecrow.
But in the comic book, Jason is kidnapped by Scarecrow. (He gets gassed, and hallucinates Bruce dying and telling him that it was his fault.) He isn’t around to keep Bruce in check as he goes to rescue him through a series of death traps that he can’t resist cutting it as close as possible in. So how does Bruce not go off the deep end? How does he not lose sight of what’s important? Not lose himself?
Because even a drug designed to shut down stress at the most fundamental level can’t overpower his true worst fear. The Dark Knight might feel fearless…
but a parent never is.

I will now be personally headcanoning that Bruce pulled Tim aside one day to ask his opinion on if Tim would ever consider changing or adding Alfred to his middle name(s). I've always interpreted Jack Drake as having been abusive towards Tim, due to some of the comics where he's been violent and such (Like the time he destroyed some of Tim's belongings and such when he was angry at him, or the straight up neglect when Jack and Janet went to explore the world regularly and leave Tim behind, forgot his birthday, etc), and so I feel like sometimes Tim would feel icky about keeping his middle name as 'Jackson' after his biological father (I'm surprised he ever kept 'Drake' and didn't just fully move to 'Wayne', but alas). I feel like Bruce would also be aware that Tim sometimes feels left out of the family, especially due to the early years of him and Damian's dynamic and constantly being told he was never Bruce's 'real son'. It doesn't take a lot of common sense to realise those kind of words will linger, even after the brothers have improved their relationship. I had originally thought to consider this with Damian, but he's already named after Thomas, so I feel as though Bruce would choose Tim so that he gets to both honour his second father, and let Tim know that he will always be Bruce's son and a part of the family, regardless of DNA. Tim accepts, and so his middle name becomes Alfred, instead of Jackson.
Alfred doesn't find out until he's going over some family legal documents and sees it. He cries when he does.

let me just say that @ronancebuckley (moonflowery on ao3) is an actual menace of a writer. the plot never stops twisting, the titles are often misleading (in a heartbreaking good way), AND THEIR USE OF WORDS IS EXQUISITE, SENSATIONAL, AMAZING, ASTONISHING, BREATH TAKING, UNBELIEVABLE, WONDROUS
I ACTUALLY LACK THE WORDS TO DESCRIBE
they are one of my favorite writers on ao3

Ryn, I adore how passionate you are about Robin!
You can see how much you adore her with each new post. But the fact that Robin has been kicking since 2021 is soooo impressive to see. It isn't easy to have an original character, especially female ones. I've partaken in original characters myself, but they've never been put on any blogs. I can't imagine how original characters are treated, but I do know that female ones often have a tricky time in a similar way to female muses. Seeing Robin grow even more is so aspiring to watch!
I know I'm only supposed to say one thing, but I can't help adding some extras. Another favorite thing of mine when it comes to your blog is that Robin's background is written like a traditional fairytale. Another thing that I like is just the existence of Robin's PMMM verse. I'm sure I would love to see how Robin's labyrinth and witch would look and behave, maybe even how her doppel looks, but... I'm also hoping for Robin's happiness, so there's that. You don't see PMMM verses that often, but it's always a delightful surprise to see them.
