6 w haci, 7 w mimielsa, d u d e 21 with antci, midnighteye w 28 ;w;
They got progressively longer wtf @poketin @ellieofmidnight
6- Favorite feature of their partners
Well, I could easily say they both love each other’s hair, but Traci love Hana’s soft spoken voice and willingness to try and make something of herself, and Hana loves traci’s sixth sense of taking care of others. Feeling bad but down want to talk about? Here comes a pile of chocolate chip cookies for a little gaming date.
7- Whats the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for each other?
Well, Mimi doesn’t seem to fucking change tbh. Shes still a snot-nosed know it all… but she does become oddly defensive of Elsa any time someone talks shit and Elsa isnt around to defend herself. Really, its Elsa who doesn’t change that much- shes always lit up when mimi’s treated her special, ever since they were friends. The only thing that really changes is the number of makeout sessions :eyes:
21- Who is more likely to start dancing with the other?
There’s a system of checks and balances in place, from isolating traci so much she becomes so desperate that she’d do anything for Anti, but not too much that she’d give up on pursuing him completely. Little things keep her chasing after him. Earlier on, when he was still playing Jack, he’d unexpectedly take her hands and spin her around- a little impromptu dance- anything for her to lower her guard. She’d be highly embarrassed, but she’d laugh, and kinda dance along. Then it got to a point where Anti wouldnt do anything unless she approached him first. Their dances arnt as energetic anymore- its mostly a tuneless slow dance so Traci can lean her weary head on Anti’s chest and experience some physical contact and experience some feeling similar enough to love.
28- What do they do when they’re away from each other?
Jack would definitely be up to face-timing every two seconds, just to say hi to her, ‘face to face’. If not any time during the day, he definitely does it before the go to bed. Sometimes they’ll just stay on call until one or both of them fall asleep. They text each other constantly little funny pictures or odd situations they’ve gotten themselves in. Ellie loves to send pictures with no context and watch Jack give her some wild answer as to what she could be up to. It’s really a mystery on how they get anything done.
Jack also occasionally sends hand-written letters, just because they’re usually short and d umb and something like ‘I know you were up until like 5 am, quit it’ and he literally goes though all the postage to send it. Ellie would h a t e that hes using all that time and effort and money on fucking hand written letters if she didn’t find it so endearing. She has a little box where she keeps some of them and occasionally sends responses back- the first time, he received quite a lovely decorated envelope and floral card paper and petals that fall out of the card only to reveal the single word ‘nerd’ written inside. Jack laughed about it every face-time call for like, two weeks after that.
They also impulse-buy dumb little gadgets and online thingies and send them to each other (like a coffee mug in the shape of a hat. A tiny drumset for a desk. a package that was just a picture of a cat signed by an unknown cat enthusiast.)

Essay Research- Satoshi Kon, ideas behind his films
“I make them with the intention of being for a general audience, a mainstream audience,” said Mr. Kon, who spoke through a translator on a recent visit to New York. “But they tend to get perceived as much more artistic.” (NY Times)
I’ve been researching the ideas and intentions behind the subjects and story lines in Satoshi Kon’s films and I will attempt to elaborate a bit on what the director means by this quote.
General audience- although a lot emphasis in his films are put on the otaku culture and obsessive interests, this sort of culture becomes even more prevalent in the contemporary society.
Tumblr media
In the beginning shots, in Perfect Blue, we see crowds of people immersed in their phones or mp3 players, suggesting how little attention is paid to the real world and the surroundings. The artifice magazine argues, what Kon is intending here is:
‘He wants to show his audience how society itself has become a type of otaku with its love and dedication to various technologies; society has become a group of isolated individuals who can only interact through cell phones and the Internet.’ (The artifice)
This is not something that is just limited to Japan, but is widespread, therefore a lot of the viewers can relate to the themes in Kon’s films.
Kon’s films explore the danger of obsession with technology and how its is impacting on a person’s identity. He argues that internet possesses qualities similar to dreams, because just like dreams, internet isolates us from reality. On internet a person can portray themselves how they wish and take their life in a direction that they wish it to be. He says it essentially helps to release  ‘ the repressed subconscious’, because people can unanimously seek and discuss things they cant do offline.
This is an important theme in Perfect Blue, as a web page manipulates the main heroines ideas of herself. Kon says, this device helps to show:
‘the process of a young girl maturing, becoming confused because her old set of values gets shattered, but who is reborn as a mature being as a result of that.’ (midnighteye)
He is particularly clever about increasing influence of the web in the heroine’s real world, this is why his films are seen as ‘artistic’. He is particularly particularity conscious of framing and editing to show this duality and the merging of the worlds.
In my earlier post, I outlined how Kon uses horizontal compositions to seemingly have the characters slip from one world to another. This something I want to explore in my essay.
In my essay, I also want to look at match cuts because that is a very powerful way to confuse the the viewer about the setting the character is in. These frequently also tend to start as close ups, so the audience has to take time to work out where the character is.
He suggests that the intention of these type of shots is to have the audience see things  from the character’s perceptive and be immersed in the character’s struggle as though it was their own.

Much has changed on the Japanese film scene during those years as well. The dawn of the new millennium was a really exciting time for Japanese cinema, with people like Takashi Miike coming up, J-horror breaking through internationally, directors like Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Shinji Aoyama, Hirokazu Koreeda and Naomi Kawase establishing themselves as new auteurs on the festival scene. Thanks to a decade of feverish filmmaking activity for the video market, the medium budget range (roughly US$ 400,000 – 1 million per film) was alive and well, with both genre films and arthouse indies (the line between the two was blurry to begin with) making their money on the mini-theater circuit and on video. It was a very diverse and vibrant scene, and our excitement for it led to the decision to create Midnight Eye.
The situation today is much less dynamic. Filmmaking in Japan has largely polarised, with very high budgets (by Japanese standards, i.e. US$ 10 million or a multiple of it) on the one extreme and no-budget indie (or amateur) filmmaking on the other. Films in the former category seek to emulate the Hollywood blockbuster formula and are produced by "film committees": consortia of production partners, the majority being television stations, advertising agencies and talent agencies rather than traditional film production companies. Each partner has a stake and a say in the filmmaking and the result more often than not literally comes across as something made by committee rather than artistic vision. It is a type of filmmaking that takes no chances: all the stories are based on hit properties (TV series, manga, novels) and the lead actors are pop musicians or TV talento, while the important share of media companies in the production committees is resulting in self-censorship and/or conservative political stances in line with the policies of Shinzo Abe’s government.
By contrast, there is still quite a bit of guts and artistic vision on the no-budget end, but that side suffers from a lack of outlook - for the vast majority of young indie filmmakers there is nowhere to grow after they make their first self-financed feature, even if they had their film shown at festivals abroad and picked up a few awards along the way. Self-financing a movie is an exhausting process that you are not terribly likely to repeat (unless you are Shinya Tsukamoto and it’s in your DNA). They can't go professional either, because there is simply no room for them in the industry: since the collapse of the video and DVD market medium-budget productions have to all intents and purposes vanished, while the production committees of the high-budget films prefer to hire someone of whom they can be sure, which means either a TV director familiar to the network that has a stake in the production or an experienced hand like Takashi Miike or Yukihiko Tsutsumi who already has a track record making hits.
Things go in waves (or in circles), so surely these recent developments in Japanese film (and hopefully those in politics too) will eventually be replaced by other trends. That an increasing number of directors are looking to make films overseas is both a sad consequence of the current situation and an opportunity to redefine our views of what constitutes a "Japanese film". But the current situation and the films it engenders do not exactly fill us at Midnight Eye with the enthusiasm we need to keep this website running when so many other important things require attention.
Godspeed, MidnightEye
