Some thoughts on propotionality

I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to understand how Israel's response is proportional. My own view is that it is not. Not least of which because at the time of writing this more than 11,000 people in Gaza have been killed, which includes more than 5,000 children. Almost half of housing units have been destroyed. This is unacceptable. The total cost to rebuild is already more than 85% of Gaza's annual GDP - in 44 days. But one thing that I've seen in the growing narrative changes is the frequent reminder that the Oct. 7th, 2023 Hamas attacks were like that of Sep. 11th, 2001 terror attacks. Except that the Hamas attacks on Israel were, in fact, 15 times worse when we consider population differences. 1,500 people dying in a population of a little over 9-million is a much larger per capita death rate than that of 3,000 in a population of 285-million. But absent from this discourse is Gaza's experiences. Over the last 15 years (between 2008 and 2022), Israel has experienced the equivalent of 0.93 9/11 equivalencies per year, or a total of 12 in the last 15-years predating the 10/7 attacks. Gaza, on the other hand, has experienced an average of 49 per year, or 302 in a 15 year period.

In the last 44 days, the amount of human life expended in Gaza by the hands of Israeli forces is tantamount to a 9/11 scale event 11 times a day. This has happened 503 times in 44 days.

Jews have a right to exist, and a right to self-determination. But so do Arabs, Palestinians, and Gazans. What Hamas did was barbaric. But what Israel is doing now is disproportionate, wanton, and inconsistent with any legitimate sense of self-defense.

Cora Week 2023 - 1 - Smile

Someone said it was Cora Week? The prompts aren’t the best so I’m not linking to them (how the fck were those quotes sourced they’re horrid), but I was able to scrape some things together and work on my short form thanks to it.

“Remember, darling,” Mother said, “your greatest weapon is your smile.”

Rosi glanced around at the dingy shack before letting out a shaky sniffle. “What if there is nothing to smile about?”

“There always is,” she replied gently. Mother stroked his hair and bent to kiss his brow; she hadn’t been out of bed in days. “As long as you are alive, there is always something to smile about.”

“Even… even if we’re poor and hated?”

“The poor are always hated by someone, and often unjustly so.” Her eyes seemed so sad that it made her young son hurt. “Your father and I used to hate the poor.”

“You did…?”

“We did, before we realized that the poor had more to hate us for than we ever could falsely justify hating them.” She let out a cough and Rosi got her a drink of water—it was clean for once, and they saved it for her. “That is why we wanted you and Doffy to live as normal children, so that you know not to hate them and instead see them as equals.”

“…but they still hate us,” Rosi stated. “Why should someone smile if they are hated?”

“You should smile, my darling, because you are doing your best.” He poked his nose and he rubbed it as she giggled. “You are alive, you are doing your best to be good and kind, and because of that, you should smile. It is your greatest weapon and best defense.”

“How…?”

“Well, it’s like this,” she said, putting the empty glass down so her son could join her in bed. “When I was a girl, I was taught how to be a noble lady. It was about how to act, how to dress, how to speak, but most importantly: how to smile. You can smile at your loved ones and your enemies and it mean very different things. It can hide everything you want and tell everything you want, all without speaking a word.”

“So you can use it to speak silently?”

“Yes. You can protest, you can protect, you can love, you can mock, all with a smile.” She hugged him tight and tickled his sides, causing him to squirm. “Please always remember to smile, Rosi.”

“I shall, Mama,” the boy beamed. “I’ll help you get better and you’ll see! Doffy and I will find a place where we can all live happily! We can smile together and everything will be good!”

“I know you will,” she replied, her own smile wan. “Just keep finding reasons to smile, Rosi. You’re a smart boy, and I know you can do that.”

“Yes, Mama.” He hugged her tightly and she let silent tears fall from her eyes—hopefully her lessons would stick with him well after she was gone, since they were not sticking with her other son. “Mama…?”

“Yes, my dear?”

“How did they teach you?”

She paused and considered that before nodding—yes, this was something she could do.

A couple of weeks before the midterm elections, Kevin McCarthy assured voters that House Republicans, if given the majority, wouldn’t be so rash as to go on an impeachment binge.

“I think the country doesn’t like impeachment used for political purposes at all,” he told Punchbowl News at the time. “I think the country wants to heal,” he added, and avowed that he didn’t think anybody in the Biden administration merited impeachment proceedings.

The voters gave Republicans a chance, awarded them narrow control of the House.

And now Republicans are starting their impeachment binge.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) rose in the House Tuesday evening after the last vote. “For what purpose does the gentlewoman from Colorado seek recognition?” asked the presiding officer, Rep. Russell Fry (R-S.C.).

The gentlewoman sought recognition to unveil a parliamentary maneuver that would force a vote within 48 hours on H. Res. 503, “Impeaching Joseph R. Biden Jr., president of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors.”

No impeachment proceedings. No investigation. No evidence. No crimes. Not so much as parking ticket. Just a willy-nilly, snap vote to impeach the president, because Boebert dislikes Biden’s immigration policies. In her mind, “President Biden has intentionally facilitated a complete and total invasion at the southern border,” she charged on the House floor.

Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) flew into a fit of jealousy because Boebert had thought to use the maneuver (called a “privileged resolution”) to force an impeachment vote before Greene got a vote on her articles of impeachment against Biden. Boebert stole her impeachment articles, Greene whined to reporters, calling Boebert that name that every kindergartner fears: “Copycat.”

Congresswoman Jewish Space Lasers then confronted Boebert on the House floor and called her a “little b----” who “copied my articles of impeachment,” according to a Daily Beast account that Greene confirmed.

But Boebert was unmoved — because she’s on a mission from God. She filed her impeachment resolution because “I am directed and led by Him … by the spirit of God,” she told the evangelical Victory Channel.

Weekly Writing Update #79 (January 7th, 2024)

First update of the new year! Hello. It feels weird seeing my annual word count back to zero, heh. Long week, busy week, but I've been pretty solid with my writing. Working slowly on the New Years drabbles. They're coming! I'm not sure when, exactly, but probably before the end of the month. Hopefully. And I've decided to make a couple changes to the weeklies. WWDD will now be uploaded on Mondays, and EuM on Tuesdays. I'm also going to start booking Team Work again, so hopefully I'll be able to upload some of that before too long, start to get caught up on it. Going to be a long road, that one. Expect a new semi-regular series too, because my "Back to Earth" story ended up going from "This is just a single chapter story" to "I kinda want to make this a series" and the second chapter of that will probably be up before Dynamite. Yeah. We won't say anything about its title going hand in hand with Back to Basics, ok? We just won't, lol. Also I have a Hook story that will be posted soon, probably late tonight or tomorrow. Will see. Anyway, hope everyone's new year started off great and I'll be back next week with more!

Jayden Daniels: 2023 Heisman Trophy Winner

Senior quarterback Jayden Daniels from Louisiana State University was announced as the 89th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy during ESPN’s 2023 Heisman Trophy Ceremony Presented by Nissan on Saturday (Dec. 9), originating from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, N.Y.

Fellow Heisman finalists quarterback Michael Penix Jr. of Washington, quarterback Bo Nix of Oregon and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. of Ohio State finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the Heisman balloting.

Daniels is LSU’s third Heisman winner as he joins Joe Burrow (2019) and Billy Cannon (1959) among Tigers to hoist the bronze statue. He is also the 20th quarterback in the last 23 years to win the award and the 39th quarterback overall.

The 6-foot-4 Daniels, born in San Bernardino Calif., completed 236-of-327 passes for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns with just four interceptions while also rushing for 1,134 yards and another 10 scores.

He leads the nation in total offense (4,946), TDs responsible for (50), passer rating (208.0, currently above the NCAA record), yards per pass attempt (11.7) and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,134) while his 40 TD passes are tied for first.

Daniels earlier this week was named the 2023 AP Player of the Year in addition to winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback and Walter Camp Player of the Year Awards. He is also a five-time SEC Offensive Player of the Week winner this season.

He became the first player in FBS history to rush for 200 yards and pass for 350 yards in a game when he did it against Florida on Nov. 11, collecting 372 yards through the air and 234 on the ground. The 606 total yards broke the SEC record. Daniels joined Heisman winner Johnny Manziel as the only other player in SEC history to pass for 3,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season and is the eighth player to do it overall.

Daniels’ passer rating of 208.01 is a Heisman best and his 4,946 total yards is tied for the third-most by a Heisman winner, matching 2018 winner Kyler Murray’s total. His 50 total touchdowns are the seventh most in Heisman history and his 3,812 passing yards is 12th most.

Daniels is the fifth player in the last seven years who won the award after transferring and he is the first Heisman winner born in California since Matt Leinart won it in 2004. Despite the drought, California has still produced 14 Heisman winners, more than any other state.

He is just the third senior to win the award since 2006, the other two including Burrow (2019) and DeVonta Smith (2020). Daniels, the first Heisman winner coached by Brian Kelly, is the 34th winner from the SEC.

Penix Jr. is Washington’s highest finisher ever in Heisman balloting, topping defensive tackle Steve Emtman’s fourth-place finish in 1991. Nix is Oregon’s highest finisher since Marcus Mariota won the award in 2014. Harrison Jr. is Ohio State’s highest finisher since C.J. Stroud was third in 2022.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy ballots went out to 928 electors, which includes 870 members of the media, our 57 living Heisman winners and one overall fan vote presented by Nissan, premier partner of the Heisman Trophy. All ballots were submitted electronically to the independent accountants at Deloitte.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Missing Persons Unit is looking for a missing endangered woman and anyone who sees her is asked to contact PPB.

Wilma Acosta, 28 years-of-age, was last seen leaving a bar near the corner of Northwest Couch Street and Northwest 3rd Avenue of Portland, Oregon in the early morning hours of November 26, 2023.

Acosta’s cell phone was tracked to the Japanese American Historical Plaza on the west side of the Willamette River, but Acosta was not located in the area.

Wilma has reportedly had suicidal ideations in the past and a history of depression.

Wilma is described as a Latina female, 5’5" to 5’6" tall, 150 lbs, with black shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing a black lace shirt, black coat, black pants, and black boots.

Wilma has several tattoos on her body and three piercings on her bottom lip.
