there are 8tracks playlists i've been listening to for over 10 years (either rescued onto spotify during the temporary death of 8tracks, or now being rediscovered while I go through my old 8tracks likes now that the site is back up), and each time i listen to them, i feel something in my brain chemistry be reset.

i'd love to thank the creators, but 8tracks doesn't allow messaging anymore and even if i can find the creators elsewhere, i haven't yet been able to find an active account

so in lieu of being able to thank them directly -- if you created an 8tracks playlist back in the day, thank you. maybe your playlist is one of those ones that live rent-free in my soul, or maybe it is for someone else. either way, thank you for your time and love and musical creativity. the joy you added to the fandom lasts longer than you may think

i used to make a lot of fan soundtracks. it was my hobby in college, even. i loved gradually picking out each song, compiling them on a doc or a small playlist on windows media player (my baby has never changed and i love that for her). then when i thought i had enough songs, i'd feel out the flow of each song, compare them side by side, assemble the playlist with a core theme in mind. then i'd hunt for the cover art. unfortunately some of it was stolen art because i was stupid </3 but i did ask for permission for some of my playlists and i'd make sure to credit all the artists. and i'd upload on 8tracks w/ my little blurbs abt why i chose each song. the character limit murdered me violently each time but goddamn it i kept up. and then 8tracks tanked and now i got spotify but you see. you see spotify is not the same. this is not the savant website. this is everyone's personal little libraries made public to everyone else. i don't curate my spotify fandom playlists. it's the trash bin, you hear me. but i don't actually throw anything away, it's in pristine condition to remind me of that one au i thought of while listening to this song. it's my nasty little dragon hoard and i love it but dear god you are not allowed to judge me.

I'm editing out names because I'm not making a call out post.

I want to quickly discuss something that happens in business because it doesn't get talked about a lot.

8tracks either started with, or accepted money after starting, I can't remember and it doesn't really matter for the sake of this particular discussion, money from a company called SeedInvest.

They are a broker that connects people that say "Hey I have an idea for a company" and "Hey I have some money and I want it to grow, and/or I want to shift XYZ industry for Reasons -- I either love this industry or hate a specific business in it, etc."

You can read the case study with the broken image (lmao) on SeedInvest's website. As a disclaimer, I was one of the investors in 8tracks via SeedInvest -- se above letter. I am not an investor with the new company (see below).

The service offerings are less and I hate it when a company collapses and people buy the wreckage and then re-launch under the same name without the full offering. If you're going to offer less then change the goddamn name. It is not a legal requirement, by any stretch, this is just my own personal Issue With How Business is Done

I've been steadily archiving Transformers 8tracks playlists I like as I'm listening to them (when 8tracks is working enough to use at all.)

With the way 8tracks is, I figure some people besides myself could be interested in this, so I might make a place like a google drive or something to share these.

I'm making txt files of the playlists, including: the title, song names in intended order (including the album name and year if it says), original url, name of the creator, anything they wrote under "NOTES", and any annotations they've included.

I'm also saving the cover art and a screenshot of the playlist's page as it appears on 8tracks. I don't have a screenshot for every one I've saved yet, since it just occurred to me to do that.

I haven't been getting the actual songs, since that takes a lot more time.

Surprisingly, I was unable to find a way the songs could be ripped from 8tracks. If anyone knows a convenient way to do that, I'd be curious to hear about it. I'm better with computers than most people, but I don't know the first thing about programming, so any solution needing knowledge about that would probably miss me.
