Myths and visions of motherhood and fathering, brings together artistic and theoretical positions on reproduction and communication, gender and genus, addressing and conception.

Farouk Goweda is a bestselling Egyptian poet, journalist, and playwright whose nearly 50 books have been widely influential in the Middle East. His work has been translated into English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Persian, and he has been awarded several national and international prizes.

Walid Abdallah is an Egyptian poet and author whose books include Shout of Silence, Escape to the Realm of Imagination, My Heart-Oasis, and Male Domination and Female Emancipation. He has been a visiting professor of English language and literature in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Germany and the United States. His prize-winning co-translations with Andy Fogle of Farouk Goweda’s poetry have previously appeared in ANMLY, Image, RHINO, Reunion: Dallas Review, and Los Angeles Review.

Andy Fogle has six chapbooks of poetry and a full-length called Across from Now (Grayson Books). Along with his co-translations with Walid Abdallah, his poetry, collages, and a variety of nonfiction have appeared in Blackbird, Best New Poets 2018, Gargoyle, Parks and Points, Right Hand Pointing, and elsewhere. His music can be found at fogle.bandcamp.com. He lives in upstate NY, teaching high school and working on a PhD in Education.

Farouk Goweda’s poems as translated from the Arabic by Walid Abdallahand Andy Fogle give us an open and bleeding Earth, a world and a language begging to be healed, and by each of us. Goweda’s poems don’t get mixed up in nostalgia but yearn for something better than some heady version of the past. What I am struck with, reading these poems now, is how urgent these translations are: but the tools to repair are in all of our hands. The cultural and ecological merge as we encounter a language that is a plea, an outcry, a call to life across borders and difference.

1. Who and/or what are you reading, watching, or listening to in order to preserve your ability to persevere right now? So many things, and coming from all kinds of directions. I'm reading Alice Notely's new book, Certain Magical Acts as well as Donna Haraway's new text Staying with the Trouble. I'm also reading Ardour, over and over again by Nicole Brossard, translated by Angela Carr. I can't get enough of those poems. I'm noticing that I'm drawn to texts, lately, that pull me away from the human and towards aligning myself with other elements in the world...I'm listening to a lot of old records, I'm really into Tim Maia from Brazil and the Iranian rocker Kourosh Yaghamei also and I have a good friend who sends me playlists weekly, she recently send me Nicola Cruz who is amazing and is soothing while also being very invigorating. I just watched all of Search Party in one sitting practically, I really liked that... but I haven't gotten too into any other shows lately. 2. What was your favorite text—article, manifesto, book, etc.—written and/or translated by a woman in 2016? I've been enjoying Against the Current by Tedi López Mills, translated by Wendy Burk from Phoneme Media a lot this year. It is a text that is beautiful but also has an activist current within it that feels very important. I was recently reading Rosiemarie Waldrop's essay on translation, "Joy of the Demiurge" on the Omnidawn site and it resonated a lot with me, because as a translator, I struggle a lot between dealing with the ephemeral and the concrete. I also loved Olivia Sears essay in Words Without Borders on Italian poet Eva Taylor and the complexity of language happening there and its relation to the lived body 3. What book(s) written and/or translated by a woman due out in 2017 are you particularly looking forward to? I am really looking forward to Anne Gárrata's new book in English translated by Emma Ramadan, Not One Day from Deep Vellum, because the Sphinx is one of my favorites. I am also excited about The Most Foreign Country by Alejandra Pizarnik translated by Yvette Siegert from Ugly Duckling. There are so many amazing things coming out this year and it seems like more and more translation by women of women authors! 4. What do you think are the most important actions for translators to be taking right now? I think we need to translate the work that is politically and personally important to us and we feel can be important to other readers. I don't think it is time for the same old things, it's time to really push readers to pick up books that may be challenging but have some kind of radical outlook, whether that be in relation to aesthetics or content--but it is rare that those things don't come together on their own. As translators I really take seriously our duty to find books we believe in and this means doing the work, it means finding authors on the margins, noticing our own reading habits and changing them sometimes.
