My record player animation workshop at last weekend’s Great Exhibition Road Festival for Imperial College London got a mention on BBC Radio 4 Inside Science! A child participant explained the phenakistoscope process fairly concisely. Science communication job done! … Child: We’ve gone to the Spirograph thing about illusional art and we’ve seen that if you spin the pictures at different speeds, the colours go in different directions. Reporter: So cool! And did it look really strange when you were watching it spin around? Child: Yeah, because your phone breaks down the frames, ’cos if you used it with your brain it just looks like a blur, but then if you use your camera it sees it 30 times a second, so it can make, like, art with it. … Listen to the whole programme on BBC Sounds - link in bio. … @la_reine_et_l_oiselle. @exrdfestival @imperialcollege @instantwarhol #opticalillusion #opticalillusions #phenakistoscope #phonotrope #animation #phasepatterns #trippy #artworkshop #childrensart #stem #steam #hypnotic #exrdfest #bbc #bbcradio4 #sciencecommunication (at Great Exhibition Road Festival) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfPqsFSIfXX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Let's talk about You're Dead to Me from @bbcradio4 .
You're Dead to Me is a history podcast mixed with comedy and a dash of quiz show and is 💯 delightful.
Greg Jenner is the host, a public historian known for his show Horrible Histories and various BBC appearances and shows, and every episode he invites on a comedian and a professional historian to learn about the life of a famous historical figure. Greg and the historian go over the life of the person with a chatty and informative exchange, leaving room for asking questions and comments from the comedian. Towards the end of the episode they give a 2 minute period called, "The Nuance Window" for the historian to info dump about something on the topic, followed by a 1 minute, 10 question quiz for the comedian called, "So what do you know now?"
A perfect blend of history and humor, my notoriously pod-finicky partner and I have taken to listening to it in the car when we go on drives to exotic and far away places here in the rural Midwest US such as Costco (Ooh!) and Trader Joe's (Ahh!). LOL. Ugh. Why are they so far away?! But I digress, You're Dead to Me chews up the miles and before you know it, we're there for immense quantities of frozen gnocchi, super nutty clusters, and/or a giant package of Tate's Bakeshop cookies that never lasts as long as I intend. 😅
Just starting "series 5", episodes around 45 minutes, there are plenty of fun histories to go around!
So, if you like history with a dash of humor, anything from the BBC, or clever British pods like, Drunk Women Solving Crime, then You're Dead to Me is for you!
sebastiancroft: if you're bored and looking for a way of passing the time on boxing day, then may i suggest the gentle tones of Bill Nighy's voice and the less exciting slightly more shrilly tones of my voice... 'A Single Act' starring Bill Nighy, Amelia Bullmore and myself is now available on @bbcradio4

When Doug Hawyard was the master of Mount Street all sorts would come and go (with an unscheduled fittings for a suit or coat that wasn’t at all planned often part of the visit).
I was in good company at 34 Montagu Square, which is where I have been based, when the broadcaster and Beatles guru, @geofflloyd (@siriusxm, @bbcradio4, @bbc6music...) dropped by last year with Martin Freeman to record an interview that would feature in one of Geoff’s Podcasts. Martin is also steeped in Beatlemania so was naturally more than happy for this to be recorded at a place which, as previously shared, various members of the band, including Sir Paul McCartney, called home at one time or another.
When I joined Martin and Geoff, for whom I made a wedding suit, to chat they wanted to know everything about the suits, jackets, trousers, and waistcoats I have made over the years for Sir Paul, who, even after a Christmas, will not be much different in size to what he was back in the day. For all Martin’s wealth of knowledge much of what we covered was fresh ground for him. As for a new suit or coat he might have inadvertently ordered in a way that was commonplace at Doug's, rather like a gentleman's barber, tailors know when you have been “unfaithful”. Consequently, Martin did not stray. At the same time, for all the closeness that there is between a client and his or her tailor, the relationship isn’t like marriage. Maybe next time we can persuade him to join Geoff and be a bit promiscuous. Especially if he needs something for the office.
Thanks to a superbusy @colourfulwatson for pointing me to this one. 😘
