in praise of dr katarina jones
dr jones is both a dark mother figure AND kronos eating his young and i love it. kronos devours his young because he's told one will overthow him - dr jones refuses to let the future be born because it takes a shape she doesn't like, overthrowing the world she loved. and out of her grief and refusal to let go of control, she is unknowingly consuming her own grandchild in her time machine! literally paying in his blood for the control she seeks, to defy and bend time to her will. oh i love her.
and it's so vital that the story has such deep sympathy for her and lets her find grace and grow. she isn't punished or denigrated for her deeply human flaws - her grief, pride, hubris, controlling tendencies. on any other show dr jones would either (a) be written the same but have to be male for the writers to have that much empathy & treat dr jones with such kindness or (b) be female and treated like a pure monster rather than a very very human person.
beautiful, rare writing for an older female character. and gorgeous work by barbara sukowa.
edit:
"the greatest lie is believing that we are shaping them [our children]. that we have any control. no, they make us. they can destroy us."
gorgeous character arc!!
