Are iPhone Batteries Losing Capacity Too Quickly?
Recent discussions have revolved around the iPhone's battery lifespan, with numerous users expressing concerns about their iPhone 14 batteries dropping to around 90% capacity or even lower. Apple's official stance on the matter states that their lithium-ion batteries are engineered to retain a minimum of 80% original capacity across a substantial number of charge cycles, with the specific count varying based on the product.
Tumblr media
Taking a closer look at my own iPhone 13 Pro, I've observed that it currently boasts a maximum capacity of 95%, having undergone 297 charge cycles in the span of 13 months, which equates to roughly 1.38 days per cycle. A point of intrigue lies in the interplay between maximum capacity and cycle count. In a fascinating twist, my iPhone 13 Pro's battery capacity during the manufacturing phase measured a robust 3174 mAh, surpassing Apple's officially documented 3095 mAh.
Tumblr media
This intriguing phenomenon appears to hold true for every one of the five iPhones within my household. Cycle count, the next pivotal factor, emerges into the spotlight. The fact that I've accrued 297 cycles over a span of 411 days prompts contemplation. Apple aptly clarifies this aspect in their explanations. Yet, when we attempt to mesh the concept of 95% capacity into this narrative, it appears to be a divergent tangent.
My own computations reveal that the 95% capacity figure doesn't neatly correlate. Upon closer examination, my current full charge capacity stands at 2964 mAh. By extrapolating the math, my original manufactured capacity tallied up to 3174 mAh, culminating in a present capacity of 93.38%. If we recalibrate these figures against Apple's design capacity of 3095 mAh, the recalculated percentage stands at 95.77%.
In the grand scheme of things, is this truly an issue? My perspective leans toward the negative. Operating under the assumption that the 80% threshold represents the point at which Apple might consider battery replacement, I find myself comfortably distant from that juncture, potentially even a few hundred cycles away.
Notably, instances have surfaced wherein phones exhibit around 80% capacity after undergoing upwards of 800 cycles in less than a year.
iPhone 14 battery drain is a thing. People talking about it on TikTok. I’ve never used MagSafe charger, but mine already at 88% 😵‍💫 pic.twitter.com/PW9CKs6aRu

In essence, the ongoing discourse surrounding iPhone battery life warrants consideration. By dissecting the interplay between capacity, cycle count, and manufacturer specifications, it's clear that the situation isn't as dire as some might suggest. Remaining well above the 80% capacity threshold, I'm left reassured about the longevity of my device's battery and the resiliency of Apple's engineering.

How to Test Lithium-ion Battery Capacity?
During the use of the battery, some people inadvertently found that the duration of the battery is shorter than expected, but most people don't pay much attention to it. However, the wrong battery capacity is not only related to the user experience but also has safety hazards such as explosions.
Tumblr media
So how to determine the true capacity of the battery? Here are several methods for reference:
Multimeter test method:
The capacity of a lithium-ion battery refers to the amount of electricity it can hold, and the unit is usually "Ampere Hour" or "mAh". For example, the capacity of lithium-ion battery is 500mAh, which means that if the current of the battery is 10mA, it can work continuously for 50 hours.
Lithium-ion batteries are generally tested with a 0.5C discharge:
Fully charge the battery, the voltage of a single lithium-ion battery after fully charging is 4.2V;
Use a multimeter to use a lithium-ion battery with a constant current of 0.5C, discharge relative to the battery capacity, and set the termination voltage to 3v;
Actual battery capacity = discharge current × discharge time.
Therefore, when the discharge time is not enough, the actual battery capacity will not reach the capacity marked on the battery. This is a kind of capacity false label behavior, which is a kind of deception to consumers.
The lithium-ion battery capacity measurement method and battery discharge performance measurement method is basically the same, there are constant current discharge method, constant resistance discharge method, constant voltage discharge method, fixed voltage, fixed current discharge method, continuous discharge method and intermittent discharge method. According to the discharge time and current size, the capacity of the battery can be calculated.
Constant current method circuit: The advantage of using this method is that the current is stable during the discharge process, thus the capacity can be easily calculated.
Sorting detection: different types and different degrees of old and new batteries can not be used, so as to avoid overcharging and overdischarging due to the mismatch of battery capacity. In addition, in the battery pack, the overall performance is generally determined by the battery with the worst performance. With regard to primary batteries, capacity testing is destructive, so the consistency of the product can only be maintained through strict production control.

wanted to take my addition and make my own post so i could keep talking about it
You know the ancient primordial forests and seas? well they were full of so much Life that it created huge pockets of Death, and if you trap those pockets of death under the weight of the ocean or earth and heat it with the fires at the center of the planet you can transform all that dead life into a sort of eldritch black sludge
Then you simply take your eldritch death sludge, and ceremoniously burn it to create power. Of course doing so does choke the life out of the world and could possibly end human existence, but what do you expect when you use eldritch death sludge to create power?
There IS a movement to instead use the bones of old stars that have died violent deaths in huge explosions. These star bones leak an energy that can melt any life that gets too close (but like melt it from the inside kinda) and it can sort of infect anything it touches to make that thing also leak energy that melts living beings. Anyway, you can use that life-melting energy from the deadly star bones to boil water. So that's where we get most of our power that isn't made from ceremoniously burning eldritch death sludge.
i think that's actually the part that fucks me up the most is that in both cases, what we are using it for is to boil water. Like. Your entire nation, all the electricity in your home, the street lights, all of it, is run off of a few really giant steam engines.
Literally. The cyberdistopian future is real and it is simultaneously steampunk. fml
we use the eldritch death sludge and the life-melting star energy to boil water. through a steam turbine. For all our power needs.
Like. C'mon. Space programs and gene therapy and microchips in brains that let a person use a computer with just their mind (yes that actually exists, primarily to allow paralyzed people to do things) ALL THAT and we can't find another way to boil water so we don't fuck the planet into unlivable conditions? Really? Brightest minds on the planet, can split an atom and destroy the world, but we can't cook up a better way to BOIL. WATER. are you sure?
it just. Kinda feels like we're getting punked, tbh

Hey as a super introverted but not shy person I'd just like to say the jokes about extroverts "adopting" introverts to "get them out of their shell" are actually completely unfunny and it just goes to show how little respect a lot of y'all have for the fact that we genuinely don't want excessive social interaction and that y'all are forcing us to do something that brings us extreme physical and mental discomfort because you perceive our introversion as a failing rather than as purely a difference in personality.
We don't need your "help" to socialize. We're not children. We're simply not interested in spending every waking second of our lives talking to people and being talked at in return.
#again i scream from the rooftops that there is a monumental chasm between being shy and actually being an introvert#a shy person is someone who's afraid of social interaction. an extrovert can be naturally shy.#a shy person can WANT lots of social interaction but simply have not learned to feel comfortable in social situations.#people who are just very introverted simply have little desire or capacity for excessive human interaction.#we're not “afraid” of it. we just don't enjoy it and it wears us out.#you don't need to swoop in and save us because we can't handle ourselves. we're perfectly fine thank you#extroverts are constantly demanding that we get out of our comfort zones but few of you are willing to make the alternative more comfortabl#if you're a very extroverted person please do not take it upon yourself to jokingly “adopt” introverts you meet.#it's not funny and it's not helpful. it's irritating that you perceive our quietness and low social battery as something that needs “fixing#we won't miraculously learn to love and be comfortable with excessive human interaction. that's not how we're wired and that's OKAY#i'm honestly getting so sick of the “the lonely introvert and the extrovert who adopted them” memes#i can guarantee you that if you are an extrovert who operates this way then your introvert “friend” is actually probably very uncomfortable#and just don't want to say anything because they think it would be rude to bring up the fact that they don't want what you want from them#this does NOT mean extroverts and introverts cannot be friends nor am i saying all extroverts are annoying or that they all do this#i'm simply saying that if you are very extroverted and you have a friend who's very introverted#then it's on you to be aware of your introvert friend's limited social battery and STOP pressuring them to just “put up with it”#don't spend every second with them constantly talking. be willing to spend some time just in the quiet.#be willing to let them bow out of something if they're exhausted and are low on social energy.#don't expect them to want to come to every meeting or party or get-together because it WILL drain them completely.#be willing to let them spend time alone when they need to to recharge.#letting an introvert cool off and recharge when they need to is ALWAYS going to make social situations less stressful for them.#PLEAAAAASE take their feelings into account and understand that they do NOT perceive social interactions the way you do.#most very introverted people do not find socialization relaxing or invigorating. they don't do it to unwind#they have to unwind AFTER lots of social interaction#that's about it. thank you and good night
