An Unseen Photo Album Preserves Life of Audre Lorde

In 1985, Lorde was honored with the dedication of the Audre Lorde Women’s Poetry Center at Hunter College, where one of Lorde’s students continues to lead the program today.

Lorde’s lover Gloria I. Joseph said Lorde would make these small collages with images and text for her friends.

Lorde at a ceremony where Governor Cuomo named her poet laureate of New York State in 1991. A title she held until her passing at 58 the next year.

The final page of the album shows a puppet street performance, Holocaust memorials in Berlin on Cook and Coss's last visit with Lorde, and images celebrating Lorde's legacy after death in 1992.

Curator Victoria Munro writes:

“Powerful and Dangerous: The Images and Words of Audre Lorde” exhibition at the Alice Austen House is a celebration of the radical work of Black, lesbian feminist, writer, activist and poet, Audre Lorde. The exhibition was a collaborative process made with some of Lorde’s closest friends, colleagues, and sister comrades. I was so fortunate to have their guidance in the creation of this exhibition. Two of Lorde’s long-time friends, Blanche Cook and Clare Coss, guided my initial explorations into the personal realm of her writing practice. They welcomed me into their home to view their archive of personal photographs and ephemera which spanned decades of personal celebrations and professional intersections.

Cook, Coss, and I discussed Lorde’s time spent on Staten Island (1972 to 1987) raising her two children, Elizabeth and Jonathan, with her partner Francis Clayton. Cook and Coss illuminated the many wonderful afternoons spent on St. Pauls Avenue and the powerful writing and teaching that Lorde produced during these years. Some of these works included her most celebrated:  From a Land Where Other People Live (1973), The Black Unicorn (1978), The Cancer Journals (1980), and Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (1984). She also created a new publishing house with activist Barbara Smith called Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press.

The most revelatory object they shared with me was a large album of personal photographs they had created to celebrate Audre’s life when she passed in 1992. Up until this point, the only people that had viewed this album were Lorde’s children. I was so moved by Cook and Coss’s generosity when they allowed me to include this personal memento in the exhibition. The album was frail, and it felt urgent to protect and archive the documents so they could be shared with our audience and future generations.

To make this possible, I decided to create a self-published book that stayed true to the album’s arrangement, placement, and personal notes, and could be touched and shared. The entire album was carefully scanned by our archivist and brought back together digitally to make this a reality.

There are so many connections that these unique images make between lesbian artists, activists, and photographers. These images are essential to understanding the forces of creative collaborations and the lesbian community during that period.

This book represents an intimate portrait of Lorde celebrating her contagious energy, love of people, flirty fun lesbian play, and prolific writing practice.

Cook and Coss wrote this statement to accompany the album:

“Soon after Audre Lorde departed this earth, we found comfort and consolation in the creation of an album of our chosen family, featuring some of the happiest shared moments of our lives together. These snapshots illuminate high-spirited flirty fun gatherings: birthdays, holidays at Audre and Frances’ Staten Island home; romps in the Hamptons; Lesbian and Gay demonstrations in NYC and DC; Audre’s alternative cancer treatment in Berlin; our amazing Hawaii eclipse trip; Audre honored as NY State poet; the last sad loving goodbye days on St. Croix.

This is the first time we have shared this album with the exception of our god-children Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins MD and Jonathan Ashley Rollins. We thank curator Victoria Munro for her care and appreciation of our photo memories to be included in the Alice Austen House tribute to Audre Lorde.”

it's weird to me that online content on foraging and camp/ bushcraft cooking never seem to overlap, at least not that I've ever found?? foraging recipes are always like 'wild mushroom risotto with chardonnay and arborio rice' and bushcraft cooking is always like 'first, unpack your ribeye you brought from home--' like what is going on here, surely 'guy who wants to camp out and cook over a fire' and 'guy who wants to eat some plants they found in the woods' cannot be completely separate venn diagram circles

Ice who grows up making Pierogi following a recipe card hand written by his great grandmother that makes enough to feed a small army

Ice who after joining the Navy doesn't have the time/money/even enough people to eat all of those pierogi so he learns to pare down the recipe to be just a few servings worth, and enlisting Slider in the long tedious cooking process.

Ice who, after he and Mav take in Bradley, makes the same pared down recipe, and teaches little Bradley how to fill and seal each Pierogi perfectly, (meanwhile mav still struggles to get it right and produces lumpy results)

Ice who makes pierogi again for roosters first dinner back at home after everything, and when roo gets there early (bc he is his fathers son) he's immediately pulled back into the assembly line they'd established so long ago

Ice who realizes that now that the daggers are also practically his kids that he can make the whole recipe again, without cutting it down. Ice who puts all the daggers through a mini pierogi making bootcamp so that they all can help out.

(It turns out that Rooster, Bob, Harvard, Coyote, Halo and Omaha master filling and sealing really easily, so their left doing that while Phoenix, Fritz, and Yale roll out dough and cut out disks of it. Fanboys pierogi are still a little misshapen but he's determined to get it right. Payback takes trays of finished pierogi back to where Ice stands in front of the stove top, ready to blanch them.)

(Hangman and Mav sit out, Hangman because "really pops it's too many cooks in the kitchen, I won't be much help" and Mav because "I was on active duty in the pierogi wars for how many years now? I am officially retired now that the reinforcements are here) (they sneak into the kitchen after dinner and bake a pretty mean dessert, so they're still contributing)

#prince's talk tag #went to a street fair in the city and ate a bunch of expensive food but they tasted good so im not too mad #and then i hit up kino and bnn for books #bnn was doing their buy one get one 50 percent off so that made me get more than i was planning on getting #most of these are just the next volume(s) i needed to read #witch hat did have the first two volumes of cooking spin off but i wasnt sure how worth itd be #like my boys are the stars but last time i read a chill cooking manga i wasnt as into it and ended up dropping it #so im afraid of that happening here #the eclair series i was interested in bc its a bunch of yuri one shots and i only had bleue and blanche and didnt know there was more #so imagine my surprise when i saw two other colors and i think the first one before they started naming it after colors #i got scared for a second bc i thought i accidentally bought eclair twice but i was confusing it for bleue so there were no dupes #another thing i was surprised to find where the cds in the first pic #i have the osts of the og games but not their remakes so ofc i had to get them #i just need FES and Royal and im all set (i got reload's on mercari) #went back to the place i got the blind boxes and i was trying for Luka or Kaito and i got Wonderland Luka but Computer Len #im not mad i got Len bc he is my son but i do like how Luka's looks for it but theyre pricy so i didnt want to buy too many #now if i could wonderland!kaito and computer!luka id be happy #also did the gachapon machine and got a snow miku keychain which you can see on the book in pic 3 #its really cute i like it a lot

my wrists are fucked up and i can't work and i'm not getting paid for medical leave even though legally i'm supposed to,

but also my friends are all helping me with chores whenever i ask and keep bringing me food without me asking

and i wanted to leave that job for the past year and also i got fucking permanent residency finally so in theory i can go on EI but of course i still haven't gotten the paperwork i need for that from my old job but at least i'll have health insurance for the rest of my life starting like 4 months from now

and it's been three weeks since i had to stop work so i found a workers' comp union and they helped me file a complaint and i have enough to make rent and a few weeks worth of meds and am having a yard sale over the weekend

and i was going to sell my broke down car but i can't because i haven't paid off my parking tickets but the cars for cash place only offered me 400 bucks for it anyways

two separate friends have crashed on my air mattress while going through breakups during all of this which has honestly been pretty convenient given my inability to cook or clean

and my wrists still hurt but they're healing very slowly and my friends nearby keep checking in to make sure i ask for help if i need it

#i'm very stressed but hopefully i'll figure it out #my friend anna randomly dropped off zucchini bread today #the second breakup-recovery houseguest left today and bought me cleaning supplies as a parting gift #(i did not need cleaning supplies but they were appalled by me handing them a spray with bleach in it to clean the kitchen counters lmao) #they also gave me boric acid bc ants invaded two days ago and they helped me get rid of them #when alyssa was here she cooked me a bunch of meals and chopped and blanched and froze all my vegetables #even allister let me keep the whole food bank haul that i normally split with her this week #oh the injury is tendonitis from work it just got really bad lol. eating was hard for a week or so #now i can type on my phone again (in moderation) and use the bathroom sink and pick cups up without it hurting! #oh AND my grandmother is in the hospital and my parents are coming to visit in a few weeks 🙃
