One of my favorite elements of any Retired Dream AU that assumes he faked or otherwise dodged his death is the implication that he left the entire company to the new intern, Daniel, who until last week was still a baby (as all interns are) so that he could finally take a vacation.

Daniel Hall, AKA Dream of The Endless.

I've got an idea for my own comic series based on Daniel's adventures of learning how to properly reign over The Dreaming. I like to percieve him as an entire different person compared to Morpheus- he's Dream, but he's a separate being than Morpheus. He's also kinder and much younger appearing than Morpheus. I really want to mess with both of those ideas. I'd like to imagine a late-teenage Daniel, suddenly out of place, with powers stronger than a god and responsibilities heavier than most could even comprehend; somewhere inbetween who he used to be, and the legacy he's supposed to fill. He has to learn how to keep the Dreaming functioning- aaaaaand he's a moody and dramatic teenager all at once!! (And it would be fun to write since I'm in the same stage of life!!) I can see him enjoying a lot of human comforts, unlike the other Endless, because his humanity is still at his core. I know Daniel is often percieved as being very similar to Morpheus, but I'd like to explore the concept of "human-getting-used-to-being-an-endless". It would a be fun idea to explore, it would deviate from the canon a little, and it's probably already been done, but whatever. I've got to start comic writing somewhere. It wouldn't be anything serious of course, just writing and drawing for fun. But if I do ever make it in that field and ever have a chance to make Sandman material, (like a dream come true. pun intended.) maybe that's something people would actually enjoy.

The Sandman Comic Spoilers

A random Daniel ramble that is (probably) never going to go anywhere. We do not acknowledge the Daniel not written by Neil Gaiman in this household.

“Please, what are you going to do? Everyone knows you’re softer, now. Too *nice* to do anything to stop us.”

Daniel turned to them, blinking slowly as his head tilted ever so slightly to the side. “I’m sorry, let me make sure I understand.” The white hair that has floated around his young face began to lick at the air, more the bite of flames than the wisp of clouds.

“You think that I cannot - no, that I *will* not - stop you? You believe that you can enter my realm, threaten my subjects, and that I will let you do so because I am softer than my previous self?”

Dream continued to prowl toward them, a cat sizing up its prey. The blue of his eyes slowly replaced by the black not of the night sky, but of the void, of the in-between nothingness in space.

They took a step back.

Daniel took one forward.

“Ah. I see the problem, now. You confuse niceties for kindness. You mistake open affection as weakness.” The white cloak rippled in the non-existent breeze, glimpses of shadows and nebulas obscured by the bleached-bone white of the cloth.

“You remember that Morpheus was harsh, distant and selfish and cold. Yet you forget, for ones who claim to be so knowledgeable of me, of Dream. You forget the mercy he showed. You forget that love belongs to my sibling’s realm.

You will find that embracing love has not made me weak. It has made me cruel.”

(And the Corinthian is in the background somewhere with popcorn.)
