the amusement park: chapter two

A/N: whew omg it’s been a while since I posted! Anyway I’m back and better than ever with part two, the finale of the amusement park!! This chapter includes a trigger warning for fake blood and cult mentions. It's a haunted house, so it isn't a real cult, but I'd rather be safe than sorry <3

Ship: davey jacobs x pepper simmons (s/i), featuring my best friend V and my gf Khourey and their respective f/os, race higgins and jack kelly!

Summary: When the sun sets on Canobie Lake park, the amusement park turns into a Halloween extravaganza, where Pepper and Davey find themselves paired up once more.

Once the sun had dipped onto the horizon, the last dregs of color fading from the sky as the stars came out, the group found themselves heading towards the sides of the park, where the haunted houses were set up. Mickey looped their arm through Pepper’s, pulling her close and pointing out the performers walking past; a clown with a chainsaw, a long-haired girl in a tattered hospital gown, a man wearing a pig’s head as a mask.

“So they basically walk around the park and try to scare people.” She explained, and nudged V so they could listen in as well. “But little kids sometimes wear these little glow-y ball necklaces, see? And the performers can’t scare them.” She pointed out a pair of kids walking past, both of their t-shirts illuminated by spiked plastic spheres attached to long black cords. Sure enough, the actors walked right past them.

Vi pushed their bottom lip out, turning towards Mickey. “That’s so fucking cute.” They cried.

Pepper smiled. It was pretty cute, and a good idea on the park’s part. “Do they wear them into the houses?” She asked curiously.

“I fuckin’ hope not.” Jack scoffed. “I wanna get scared, I’m not here to miss a good haunted house cause of some kid.” He smiled when Mickey swatted him. “What? It’s true!”

Mickey’s eyes rolled. “Yeah, but don’t be a dick about it.” They chastised, going to swat him again, and as their hand made contact, Jack snatched it and brought her fingers to his lips for a kiss.

Averting her gaze, Pepper felt something cold swirl in the pit of her stomach at the casual intimacy. She focused on the gum wrapper on the ground beside her shoe instead of whatever that feeling was.

V’s knuckles rapped against Pepper’s forearm, a gentle knock for her attention. “Hey, I gotta hit the bathroom, you wanna be my buddy?” They asked, though the raise of their eyebrows gave the impression that the question was simply a formality; there was no option.

Making the journey to the restrooms a short one, Vi didn’t even pretend they had to pee, instead moving to stand in front of the mirror and check their eyeliner. “So are you gonna make a move tonight?” They asked, voice quieter than usual.

Pepper sighed, of course this was the reason she was in here. “Dude, I don’t fuckin’ know.” She said, exasperation travelling across her features at even the thought of confessing her feelings. She’d talked a big game about it before, about how she loved Davey, about how she’d confess her feelings for him the second she got the idea he liked her back, but truthfully she was… well, she was scared.

Vi barely looked up from the mirror, but their expression softened. “Obviously you don’t have to,” they reassured. “But I bet that if you don’t at least ask how he feels he’ll never tell.”

Pepper rolled her eyes. “That’s because there’s-“

The door to the bathroom flew open and Mickey blustered inside, annoyance clear on their face. “Okay, how dare you two leave me alone with those idiots.”

V grimaced. “Oh shit, sorry. I just wanted a minute to see what was up with Pepper and Davey.”

Mickey’s lips pursed, eyebrows raising onto her forehead. “Oh shit okay what’s the deal?” They asked, moving closer.

Against her better judgement, Pepper leaned her head against the bathroom wall. “There’s nothing to tell! I don’t have any plans to tell him, and there’s no way someone who talks as much as Davey would have a crush on someone and not say something.” She looked pointedly at her best friends.

“That… is an excellent point.” Mickey acquiesced.

Vi lifted a finger. “Or! Maybe that’s the way you can tell that he does like you.” They moved toward the sink to wash the eyeliner remnants from under their fingernails.

“What?”

Mickey nodded. “Oh, no, I totally get it.”

“Get what? What are you talking about?”

V smiled, turning to put their damp hands on Pepper’s shoulders. “You just said Davey never shuts up.” Pepper nodded slowly. “He’ll talk to you about anything, right?” Another nod.

“But he never talks about what’s up between the two of you.” Mickey finished. “Literally, even if Jack asks, he brushes him off.”

Brow furrowed, Pepper turned back to Vi, who was grinning. “If you don’t ask, he’ll never tell.” They clarified, an echo of their earlier statement. “Don’t fucking focus on what he says, bitch, you have to ask about what he’s not saying.”

Terrifyingly, that made it click. Something welled up hot and thick in Pepper’s throat, hope or fear she couldn’t tell. Whatever it was, she wasn’t budging at her friends’ optimism. “You two are reading too far into this.” She countered weakly.

Mickey grabbed her hand, squeezed it a few times. “Listen, we’re not pressuring you.” They explained, and Violet hummed in agreement. “You don’t have to ask him anything or tell him anything, if you just wanna vibe tonight, that’s totally cool.”

Just like that, the tension melted from Pepper’s body, her psyche apparently pleased at being left alone for the moment. She looked between her friends, Vi’s warm smile and Mickey’s kind eyes, took a deep breath, and went back out into the park.

Back where the boys were waiting, the curtain to the first haunted house had lifted, and the line began to move. Jack waved them down with a smile, and they gapped into the line. He pulled the park pamphlet from his back pocket and flipped to the back, where the haunted house attractions were listed. “Okay so we started next to the big spinn-y thing. Which is… the cult one, The Culling.” He announced.

“Yeah, Jack.” Race deadpanned. “It’s on the sign.” He pointed above the line, which, sure enough, boasted the name of the site.

Jack swatted his friend with the pamphlet before tucking it into his back pocket. “I knew that.” He grinned, throwing an arm around Mickey’s shoulders and pulling them closer.

Davey nudged Pepper’s side. “Partners?” He smiled, offering his elbow as their group stepped up to the banister blocking off the entryway.

She ignored the wink that Vi threw at her, and looped her arm through Davey’s with a blush and a simper. “Hope we don’t die in there.” She mused.

He patted the hand she’d placed on his bicep, warm in contrast to her poorly-circulated own ones. “If we do, we’ll die doing what we loved.”

Her head tilted. “What’s that?”

“Kicking and screaming.”

Pepper crumpled into a fit of laughs as the employee lifted the bannister. “Have fun.” The woman at the entryway smiled, her eyebrows raising mischievously.

Race and V went first, obviously, Race throwing his arm across their shoulders and pulling them close. Mickey and Jack went next, Jack’s hand curled protectively into the back of her shirt as they ducked through the curtain. A billow of dry-ice smoke kicked out at her and Davey as she gripped his arm tighter, moving through the curtain and into a room flooded with red light.

There was a man in the corner, a pair of bloodied goat horns protruding from his head, who growled lowly at them as they walked past. Davey cast a look in his direction, following in the footsteps of his friends, and they heard Race scream further up ahead. Pepper laughed a little at that, the adrenaline beginning to swirl hot in her veins.

The next room was full of actors, at least a dozen kneeling frozen in mock prayer, and the woman to Pepper’s right let out a broken wail, making her jump. Davey’s hand came to grab hers again, this time his fingers tangling with hers. He was laughing gently at her fright, something that might have pissed her off if it had been anyone else.

They passed through a hallway full of strobelights and white walls painted with bloody handprints, the thrum of electricity the only noise for a moment, and Pepper opened her mouth to ask when the Cult Stuff would start, when a man wearing a decaying goat’s skull for a mask barrelled around the corner, making both her and Davey scream.

She curled into his side, awkwardly stepping on his shoe as she did, and watched the man with enormous eyes as he tilted his mask curiously at them. Davey laughed a little, and whether he was trying to laugh off his fright or genuinely enjoying himself, Pepper couldn’t tell.

They rounded the corner, careful of the actor who’d popped out at them, and turned into a room seemingly devoid of anyone, except for Mickey and Jack, who were giggling as they shuffled into the next room. The walls were tall and painted white, a hidden projector playing a black and white video reminiscent of those old war propaganda commercials. It was too loud for Pepper to hear anything properly, but she could catch snippets of the voiceover, “Join us in… the great and powerful… be afraid…” as the video flicked between church services, goats on farms, hypnotic black and white spirals.

Davey tilted his head at the screen. “Christians, am I right?”

Swallowing a laugh, she jutted her elbow into his side. “This is not the time, David.” She snorted, coyly tugging him closer by the anchor his hands provided. Fuck it, why not get close to him while she had the chance?

The end was in sight, she could see the cool blue light of the outdoors pouring in from the other side of the final room; one that was lined with pews, with a goat-headed preacher at the front, holding a black leather-bound book and screaming about the end of days. The church (cult?) -goers were in various stages of worship, some with their arms in the air, some reading their scripture, some sobbing towards the sky. A shudder ran through Davey, one so intense that she felt it in her own skin, and she wondered, briefly, what was so freaky about this particular scene that he-

The actor in the pew she’d just passed closed his book with a deafening bang. She jumped, screamed so loud it felt like the sound had been ripped from her teeth, and didn’t realize she was shaking until Davey’s arm encircled her, speeding past the latter half of the room and out of the first haunted house.

Pepper swallowed a mouthful of fresh air, held it for a few seconds, and released it with a pleased laugh. She turned her face up to Davey’s, ready to ask him if his heart was racing the way hers was, when he cut her off, gripping her shoulders like she’d disappear. “Are you okay?” He demanded.

Her eyebrows pinched together, her smile melting at the way his eyes were blown wide. “Yeah? I-I’m fine?” She said, reaching up to grip his wrists. “What’s wrong, are you okay?”

Every hint of expression faded from his face. The fire left his eyes, his hold on her softening, his jaw and browline going slack at the realization. “Yeah, I… I thought he-”

Race’s hands landed on either one of their shoulders. “Hey, Jack wants to know if you guys wanna do the hotel one or the factory one next, we’re at a tie.”

Pepper turned to him, blinking back the heat in her cheeks. “Oh fuck, okay, we’ll be right there.”

There were four more haunted houses, each of them with a bit of walking distance between them. Davey didn’t release her hand until they’d cleared the last attraction.

Still reeling from the adrenaline rush of the haunted houses, the group made their way toward the back of the park where the Ferris Wheel resided. Violet and Race were skipping down the lanes, their laughter fluttering in the cool autumn wind. Mickey and Jack were walking in front of them, their pinkies linked as they recounted their haunted house experiences.

Pepper tried to ignore that Davey was still so close to her.

His voice broke her out of her thoughts.

“Which one was your favorite?” He asked, the back of his hand brushing against Pepper’s as they walked. He was looking down at her, nose all rosy and cheeks flushed. He wore autumn so well.

She pursed her lips as she thought. “The cult one.” She settled after a moment.

Davey grinned. “Mine too. Or the hotel was really good.” He turned to her once they reached the line for the ferris wheel. “Y’know, when that guy back there slammed his bible closed I thought he hit you.” His fingers twitched, like he was waiting to reach for something.

There it was. The reason for his earlier freakout.

Laughing lightly, Pepper shook her head, curls falling in her face as she tried to dispel any of his remaining worry. “Oh God, no. Isn’t that illegal, anyway?” She focused on the ferris wheel ahead of them, the eighty feet of blinking lights and rocky baskets that they’d be shoved into; anything besides the bewildering look that was back on Davey’s face. Ahead of them, their friends were being ushered into passenger cars. Jack planted a kiss to the side of Mickey’s head and whispered something into their ear that made them grin.

Pepper tried not to be jealous, and failed.

Beside her, Davey was rambling again. She tuned in right in the middle of his spiel. “It’s some kinda torture house, basically. They just wail on you for like ten hours, and they film it, too. You have to sign a waiver and everything, and it’s like, forty pages or something. I watched a video of this one girl who went there and she said-”

“You two all set?” The ride operator asked, her smile bright as she cut into Davey’s rambling.

He blinked, like he hadn’t realized how close they were. “Oh, um. Yeah, I guess we are.” He resolved.

They clambered into the rocky car and belted themselves in, waited for the attendant to lock their door, and began their ascent.

Immediately, Pepper felt the wind chill. “Holy fuck, it’s freezing up here.” She barked. Davey’s cardigan was warm, sure, but the cold air cut through it like a knife.

Davey turned to her and readjusted the way he was sitting, opening up his arms. “I know, c’mere.” He wiggled his fingers and everything and, well, how was he supposed to say no to that?

She scooted closer until her leg was pressed right up against his, and her upper body curled into him. They’d done this before, a million times, when watching movies or at parties when it got crowded, or when she asked him to read to her, and Davey, ever the wonderful companion, never complained-

Oh.

Oh, no.

That was what her friends meant.

Davey’s arms wrapped around her tight. Without thinking, her arm did the same. “Better?” He asked, pulling back to look down at her.

Pepper smiled with her heart in her throat. “Always.” She said, and looked up at him.

And there he was. The same Davey as always, with his pale skin and round hazel eyes, now grinning down at her like she had hung all the stars in the sky just for him. Here he was, and he was so close that their noses were almost touching. Not correcting strangers who thought they were dating. Holding her hand and giving her his clothes and sharing drinks with her. Here he was- and she was confused.

His mouth twitched, the way it always did when he was worried. “You okay, Pep?” He asked, quieter now.

A slow nod. “Yeah… just, um, thinking.” She responded. He opened his mouth, eager to ask more, but she cut him off. “About us.” She said, feeling bold now.

Davey’s eyebrows just about skyrocketed off his face. “Us.”

“Yeah.” Pepper’s hands were shaking, but she didn’t think she could stand another minute of this. All of her affections bottled up like a powder keg while he played with them so nonchalantly. “Davey, what are we?” She hoped the question didn’t come out as raw as it felt, but she could almost taste the blood on her tongue.

“Oh.” His shoulders dropped, and he looked away. His arms didn’t move from around her, but his eyes were flicking back and forth. “We’re… you’re… m-my best friend and...” He scrunched his eyes closed and took a deep breath. “You’re my best friend and... I’m so stupidly in love with you.”

Pepper sat up as the Ferris wheel stopped. They were at the top now.

“I know that’s a lot to throw at you, I’m sorry, but all day I’ve just been thinking about you and about how much it feels like you’re this missing piece of me, you know? Like every time I need someone you’re there, and every time I talk about you to anyone I get this big grin on my face. And then earlier when that lady said what she said, it just felt so right.” He’d been gesturing wildly with his hands until she grabbed them.

She pulled his hands into her lap, encasing them with her own cold ones. “Davey.”

He sighed with a wry smile. “You can tell me no, Pep, it’s okay. You don’t owe me anything.”

“Davey.” She tried again.

“And it’s not gonna ruin anything, I promise. I love you but that’s not gonna make me turn into an asshole, I still care about you as a friend.”

“David.” She grabbed the sides of his face in her cold hands. His jaw was tense. “I love you.” She said, plainly, the way you would state any other fact. The sky was blue, the Earth was round, and Pepper Simmons loved Davey Jacobs.

And for once, Davey- sweet, lovely Davey- didn’t start talking about love, or about basic heteronormativity, or fucking haunted houses. Instead, he leaned forward and kissed her.

Any great novelist, or even just your average writer, always compared a great kiss to fireworks. But this, Pepper thought, was better than any fireworks she’d ever seen. It was coming home after a long night. It was sitting by a fire on a cold winter day. It was years of sharing beds and writing texts in secret languages, of sitting at each other’s family dinners, of shared secrets and pinkie promises, playful teasing and pathetic yearning, all wrapped up in a soft press of lip to lip. It was Davey. Of course it was. In retrospect, nobody else had ever stood a chance.

Pepper was giggling when she pulled away from his lips. “I love you.” She repeated.

The lights of the amusement park were glittering in his eyes. “And I love you.” He was beaming, their foreheads tipped together. Then he started laughing, soft and slow and bubbly, as though he were savoring it. “Oy, we’re so ridiculous.” He said as the ferris wheel began to turn again.

She could’ve stayed there for days, looking at each of the freckles on his face like little star clusters in her vision. If there were ever a photo she could keep framed on the walls of her memory, it would be this; his smile, the ivory skin around his eyes crinkled as he laughed. She was laughing too. “Yeah, we are.” Her head leaned against his shoulder, a sigh escaping before she could stop it. “How long?”

There was a beat, and she knew Davey was thinking. “Um, four years maybe? It was the summer before junior year of high school, I know that much.” The thumb of his right hand, still around her, began rubbing at her shoulder.

Pepper sat upright, aghast. “Oh my God, you’re fucking with me.”

“I’m not.” He grinned.

“Holy fuck.” She snorted. “We could’ve been doing this for years!”

Davey poked her side, making her laugh in turn. “How about you?” There was the look in his eyes again, and this time she recognized it. Dreamy, warm, a little vulnerable.

“Senior Prom. Remember we slow danced together?”

The ferris wheel stopped again, this time with them at the back. “Yeah, holy shit. I was so nervous that night.” Pepper laughed, head tossed back. “I’m serious! I was so sweaty, I’m surprised you didn’t comment on it.”

“Your hands were like holding clams.” Another poke, this one less playful. “It doesn’t matter. None of it matters. We’re here now.”

A kiss landed on her cheek, warm in stark contrast to the biting cold. “I can’t believe this.” He was laughing. “I can’t believe you liked me back.” He said.

Pepper nuzzled her nose into his neck. “I know. I can’t either.” She rested her chin on his shoulder, looked up at him and sighed.

He turned back to her. “You know they’re not gonna leave us alone, right?” He asked, tilting his chin towards the baskets below them that held their friends.

“I’m aware,” she mumbled. “I mean, they did call it.”

His lips curled up into a wry smile. “I know they did.” His fingers found the long strands of her hair, wrapped themselves in them. “Race and V haven’t left me alone about you for like, two years straight.” He shrugged. “And oh my God, if I have to hear Sarah and Les talk about it one more time I’m gonna explode.”

Pepper’s jaw dropped. “Sarah and Les were teasing you?”

He scoffed gently. “Are you kidding? They tell me to shut up every time I talk about how pretty you are.” And yeah, maybe she should have expected that, if he truly had been in love with her since junior year of high school, but Pepper’s body reacted quicker than she could recognize, her cheeks going hot and nose scrunching as a smile broke across her features.

“Well,” She said as the ferris wheel began to turn again. “Lucky for us, we probably have some time to kill before we have to face them again.” She bit at her lower lip, glancing up at him and hoping he would catch onto her proposition.

And, since Davey had always been smart, he did. “You’re right.” He breathed, and then leaned down to catch her in another kiss, one that went on, well… a little longer than the first.

Later, they had to face their friends, red-faced and smiling as they admitted what had happened. They had to endure a good hour’s worth of teasing, V and Mickey taking the opportunity to deliver a few well-intended pokes to Pepper’s sides, and Race and Jack offering high-fives to her- well, she supposed he was her boyfriend now.

The two of them climbed into the backseat of Race’s mom’s minivan again, this time hand-in-hand and sharing warm laughter. Davey stole another kiss from her, giggly and content, and promptly leaned his head on her shoulder to get some rest.

She supposed everything else could wait.

This is INCREDIBLY out of order and I'm super sorry for that shdjsjsjs

ACT 1

-Crutchie has the curliest floofiest hair aaah

-Also he was so nervous???? Shsjsjjd

-jack has a vibrato that could kill

-Santa fe prologue was on the balcony on my right (stage left??) and ctb started on my left with race and Albert and then specs with them and I think Henry and Elmer on the balcony that prologue was on

-there was lots of grabbing on persons arm and then a bit of jumping around djdjdjd

-At blind and mute and dead, race covered finch's eyes, and then he fell into races arms, and then on the other side of the stage one newsie VAULTED the other

-there were a few race/finch moments but also ravey

-during "I got personality" jack was like pointing at crutchie and being smiley and it was cute

-during "waiting makes me ansty, I likes living chancey", at chancey finch snapped his slingshot like he shot it

Did the Newsies Actually Exist?: A Masterthread

Hey guys! I found myself needing a reference thread for which characters in Newsies (the movie and the broadway musical) actually corresponded to real members of the Newsboys Strike of 1899. This doesn’t have to do with just the newsboys themselves, but also the other characters. I hope this thread serves to help anyone who may be looking for this type of information! I’ll be updating this post periodically when I get new information. Use CTRL + F if you’re searching for a specific character!

Main Newsies

Jack - Sort of (The character seems to be modeled off of Kid Blink, the actual leader of the Strike. Kid Blink was known to be charismatic and good at giving speeches, similar to how Jack was portrayed. Also, Kid Blink is infamous for supposedly accepting a bribe and going against the Newsies Strike, which is similar to how Jack accepted the money in return for speaking out at the rally. He also may have partially been based off of Morris Cohen, who helped to form the Strike.)

Davey - Yes (The inspiration for his character was David Simmons, who was the President of the newsboys Union and was noted to be one of the most eloquent of the group, similar to how Davey was the one to calm everyone down and lay out plans and such.)

Les - No (David could perhaps have a had a brother, but he was never mentioned.)

Crutchie - Yes (He was based off of a boy named Crutch Morris, who did really use a crutch to help walk. He was considered a prominent member of the Strike, at least in the second half, which is similar to how he’s portrayed as a main character in the musical/movie).

Spot - Yes (Although Spot Conlon did exist, he was not the leader of Brooklyn. He is a Brooklyn newsie, and refers to himself as the Grand Master Workboy of Brooklyn, which implies that he does have a very high role, although he’s only mentioned twice historically before he disappears altogether).

Race - Yes (Racetrack Higgins was a real boy, but he was not part of Manhattan - he was the leader of Brooklyn! He was eager to join the Strike and helped Manhattan out a lot, eventually becoming the vice-president of the Newsboys Union. Just like in the movie, he loved races and gambling! He also helped organize the rally.)

Supporting Characters

Katherine/Sarah - Possibly (Katherine, most likely, was based off of Annie Kelly. Ironic, since Katherine was Jack’s love interest, and his last name was Kelly, hm? Annie Kelly was described by a newspaper as “one of the most faithful strikers”. She wasn’t a reporter, but actually sold the newspapers. She was famous among the strikers and newsboys and was quoted as being their “patron saint”. Only three women went to the rally at Irving Hall, Ms. Kelly being one of them.) (ALSO, the inspiration for Katherine’s name and her being the daughter of Pulitzer was that Pulitzer actually did have a daughter named Katherine - she died at the age of 2 from pneumonia.)

Medda - Yes (Medda’s character was based off of Aida Overton Walker, a black Vaudeville performer around the time of the Newsboy Strike of 1899. She was quite young when the Strike was going on, around 19 years old, so she wasn’t the motherly figure that was depicted in the musical/movie. Despite this, she DID provide a safe place for the Newsies and other kids who didn’t have a home. She was known as the “Queen of the Cakewalk”!)

Pulitzer - Yes (Joseph Pulitzer was obviously a real man. He was very powerful and rich and did end up racing the price of papers from 50c per hundred to 60c, and then tried to bargain for 55c - which was unsuccessful. In the two weeks of the Strike, Pulitzer suffered greatly and lost a great deal of his revenue. Eventually he agreed to buy back any unsold papers that the Newsies had, but he refused to lower the price - this was good enough, apparently, and the Strike was therefore ended.)

Roosevelt - Yes (Roosevelt was the governor of New York at the time of the Strike, but he actually didn’t do anything about it. Unlike the movie and musical, he had absolutely nothing to do with the Newsboys Strike of 1899.)

Wiesel - No

Snyder - No

Mike/Ike - Possibly (They could be based off of Samuel Wolkinsky and John Armstrong, two newsies who worked and were arrested together for “cruel and unusual punishment” - they forced a scab to eat his own papers!)

Jojo - No

Specs - No

Splasher - No

Skittery - Yes (A newsie by the name of Skittery is mentioned in some historical papers.)

Dutchy - Yes (A newsie by the name of Dutchy is mentioned in some historical papers.)

Sniper - Yes (Some newspapers mention a newsboy by the name of Snipe-Shooter, which possibly inspired the character).

@thattheatrefreak here ya go dood and others. it’s still just a rough draft and not me bashing newsies bc i love it so much, but i was interesting in doing the research so here we go. enjoy!!

Newsies vs. The Newsboy Strike of 1899

Did you know that back in 1899, the newsboys, also known as newsies, of New York City went on strike? The strike caused massive disruption to the city’s key services. Critical news stopped and strikes and protests halted transportation. At one point even the entirety of the Brooklyn Bridge shut down. This was such an important event in our history that Walt Disney Studios created a movie in 1992, which would later become a Broadway musical in 2012, about the strike called, ‘Newsies’. Disney’s Newsies represented the Newsboy Strike of 1899 inaccurately as evidenced by the fictional characters and plotlines.

Based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899, Disney’s Newsies creates many fictional characters to tell their version of the story. In fact, the main character and “leader” of the Disney’s Newsies strike did not exist in real life but was created to support their interpretation of the story..

Jack Kelly, the alleged leader of the strike, was a charismatic character created to further their story.. His character is loosely based off the actual leader of the strike, Louis ‘Kid Blink’ Balett(i)*. Kid Blink (sometimes referred to as Blind Diamond) was the leader and chief organizer of the Newsboy’s Union Strike Committee. Kid Blink was said to be between the ages of 13-18 and Italian, while Jack was 17 and (most likely) Irish. At the time, Italians were frowned upon, and otherwise not well perceived by others, including but not limited to- the Irish. So, although the change from Italian to Irish appears insignificant on the surface, due to tensions between these groups during this time it seems curious

Both Blink and Jack Kelly accepted a bribe from a newspaper, going back to work. Jack took the bride in order to keep his boys from going to The Refuge (a jail for underaged kids), and while there’s no apparent reason for Blink accepting the bride, it was most likely just for the money. Another difference between Blink and Disney’s Jack Kelly is their mannerisms during the strike. When Kid Blink came across scabs (boys who went against the strike), he would soak them (beat them up) into joining the strike, Jack used his way words to talk the scabs into joining the strike.

His more memorable speech from the Broadway production is as follows, “Listen fellas…I know somebody put yis up to this. Probably paid ya some extra money too. Yeah? Well, it ain’t right. Pulitzer thinks we’re gutter rats with no respect for nothin’, includin’ each other. Is that who we are? Well, we stab each other in the back and, yeah, that’s who we are. But if we stand together, we change the whole game. And it ain’t just about us. All across this city there are boys and girls who ought to be playin’ or going to school. Instead they’re slavin’ to support themselves and their folks. Ain’t no crime to bein’ poor, and not a one of us complains if the work we do is hard. All we ask is a square deal. Fellas…for the sake of all the kids in every sweatshop, factory, and slaughter house in this town, I beg you… throw down your papers and join the strike.” Disney’s Jack is more a verbal peacemaker than brute enforcer.

Along with Jack Kelly, David ‘Davey’ Jacobs, and the entire Jacobs family didn’t exist either. In the 1992 Newsies movie, the Jacobs family took Jack in when David and Les, two brothers, became newsies. Davey suggested the strike and became Jack's right-hand during the strike. Sarah, Davey and Les's sister, was Jack's love interest, but an otherwise unimportant character who was written out in the stage production. The Jacobs parents aren't in the stage version, as well. They’re mentioned a few times, but never shown or talked about in much detail. The family, in the movie, showed Jack what it was like to have a real family, as none of the newsboys really had families. This idea of a perfect family and Jack;s want of this idea becomes a recurring theme in Jack’s storyline. There’s a possibility Davey was based off Dave Simmons, the president of the Strike Committee who was voted out alongside Blink for betraying the strike. Simmons was treasurer for the second half of the strike after being forced to step down from his higher position. Davey could’ve also been inspired by/based off Morris Cohen, who replaced Simmons as president of the strike committee. Consistent with the transition of Jack from thug-ish to more of a charismatic leader, Disney gave Jack more relatable family ties and direction.

Furthermore, Bryan Denton did not write the big stories that won the boys the strike. In fact, those articles don’t exist at all! As well as that, Bryan Denton did not actually exist. He was originated for the movie. It’s likely he wasn’t based off anyone in particular, seeing as though the articles from the time came from all over the place. Bryan served to unify the storytelling in somewhat of a narrator fashion that the audience can rally around.

On the topic of the newspaper reporters, Katherine Pulitzer/Plumber (Plumber having been the name she allegedly published under) did not write for ‘The New York Sun’ or anywhere, for that matter. While Katherine Pulitzer was a real person, she died of pneumonia at the age of 2 years old. In the Broadway musical, she’s written to replace both Sarah Jacobs, as Jack’s love interest, and Bryon Denton, as the reporter for the strike.

Another misrepresentation is the infamous leader of the Brooklyn Newsies, Spot Conlon. Spot Conlon, and the Brooklyn newsies, according to the musical/movie, were major influences on the strike. Disney makes it out like without Spot they wouldn't have won the strike at all. Racetrack Higgins, in Disney's versions, is just a newsie from Manhattan who loves to play poker and bet on horse races, when in actuality, Racetrack was the real ‘voice of Brooklyn’ and is mentioned throughout the papers as a major influence on the strike. He also gave a speech at the rally in Irving Hall, claiming to have confronted the chief of police, as well as threatening the boys if they thought of betraying the strike. Racetrack was temporarily vice-president of the strike committee after Blink and Simmons were voted out.

Disney also claims after Kelly betrays the strike, he joins the strike again to assist in writing and printing their own paper that helps them win the strike. Joseph Pulitzer, the owner of ‘The New York World’, sees the paper and makes Jack and the newsies an offer. He would lower the raise of price by half if they went back to work. Jack rebutted by saying that ‘The World’ would also buy back whatever papers the newsboys don’t sell, full price. In truth, over the two weeks that the boys were striking, ‘The World’ made many offers to which the Union’s Strike Committee turned down. Most of the newsies disagreed with the Strike Committee refusing to accept the offers. Eventually, Pulitzer made an offer to the newsies, not the Official Decision Makers of the strike. Pulitzer offered them 100% return rights. The newsies immediately accepted the offer, agreeing to go back to work, while the Union Committee, who disagreed with their decision to accept to offer, said they would continue to strike.

According to Disney’s Newsies, Pulitzer decided to raise the price of papers because once the war ended, they weren’t selling enough papers. Joseph Pulitzer wanted to put more money into flashy photos and headlines, so they could sell more newspapers. In order to do so, they raised the price of the newspapers from $.50 per hundred to $.60, meaning the newsies would have to sell 10 more papers just to make the same about as always. When the newsies saw the raise in price, they were immediately enraged and decided to strike. When the boys organized their first rally, Pulitzer tried to get the mayor and Snyder (the warden of The Refuge) to arrest Jack and get the rally shut down.

In actuality, ‘The World’, and most of the newspapers in the city, raised the price of their papers during the war, knowing that the headlines were dramatic enough that papers would sell easily. When the war ended, all the newspapers brought the prices back down, except for ‘The World’ and ‘The Journal’. Because the war had ended, papers weren’t selling as well, and the newsies couldn’t make enough money to survive. That being said, the newsies didn’t strike immediately. The war ended in August of 1898, and they didn’t strike until July 1899. They elected a group of boys to lead the strike called the Union Committee which consisted of Kid Blink as chief organizer, Dave Simmons as president, Little Mikey as an orator, and Jim Gaiety, Young Monix, Barney Peanuts, Crutch Morris, Crazy Arburn, Scabutch/Scabooch, and Abe Newman. The intention of Pulitzer was not as ill-intentioned and specific as Disney indicated.

Even the conclusion of the strike was changed to suit Disney’s narrative! They make it out to be more willing and accommodating than what actually happened. So, all that said, Disney’s Newsies represented the Newsboy Strike of 1899 inaccurately as evidenced by the fictional characters and plotlines.

Title: The Truth Can’t Save You Now

Summary: Davey is the sole witness to a brutal murder. Adam Carson is the agent assigned to protect him. When the lines between duty and love blur, trouble is the only outcome. Written with Havoksangel.

Authors Notes/Warnings: Nothing in this piece ever happened. I claim no ownership nor do I make any sort of profit from this, other than pride and a sense of amusement.

THREE

Adam gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. Hundreds of thoughts swam through his mind. Davey was right, he was a fucking coward. He ran because he couldn't handle it. He had gotten way too close. It was stupid of him, caring the way he did. He should have known better, after everything that had happened, he should have known better.

Captain Schultz's voice startled him out of his thoughts. "Carson? Carson, come in. We need you back at the Marchand residence, now."

Panic flooded through him. Oh God. Davey. Davey was hurt. Every fiber of his being screamed it. He left and now Davey was hurt. Tears burned in his eyes, blurring his vision. Violently, he jerked the wheel, spinning the car into the opposing lane, cutting off three cars in the process. He hardly even noticed doing so. Only one thought resounded in his head, he had to get back, he never should have left. Why the fuck did he leave?

Police swarmed the front of the apartment complex. A neighbor had spotted a man messing with the lock and called police. However, when they got there, Davey was gone and Harris was lying in a pool of his own blood on the bedroom floor

Adam didn't even bother shutting off the truck as he pulled into the parking lot. Without so much as a word, he flashed his badge at the officer guarding the door of Davey's apartment before shoving past him violently. Dread coiled in his stomach.

The voices swirling around him drowned out the second he rounded the corner to the bedroom. Harris looked so doll like laying there, his eyes open, staring blankly. Adam wanted to be ill. Harris was dead. He didn't know if he could handle walking into that room. Not when he knew Davey's body would be spread across the bed. Not when all of this was his fault.

Schultz walked up to Adam. "Harris is dead and Marchand is gone. There is no body, but there is blood on the bed. I have forensics testing it now to see if its his. This had to have happened right after your shift change." The man looked around. "There doesn’t appear to be too much of a struggle. Maybe Marchand didn’t fight. It surprises me because he seems so fiery."

Schultz's words struck Adam, sending a shiver of dread through him. Davey didn't fight back, didn't struggle. He'd given in. This was his fault. All of it. He never should have left. He never should have lied. And now his partner was dead and the man he loved most likely suffered the same fate. Just like Lily. Oh God. Oh God. Oh God. Not again. Please God not again.

Schultz put his hand on Adam's shoulder. "You okay? We don’t know for sure that he's dead. If he isn’t though, the game has changed. We did find the blood on the bed... and the bed clothes were ruffled so I can't guarantee that these psychos aren’t going to rape him or something before they kill him. Worst form of torture is to take away any and all security," he stated. "I don’t think he's dead. I think they are going to toy with us a bit. This was a high profile case and to know that the LAPD fucked up with protecting a witness is a message they may want to send out."

Adam hardly heard a word Schultz said, numbly walking towards the bed, his eyes locking on the blood staining the white sheets. Davey's blood. The sheets, the blood. No. Please God no. "Rape?" The word tumbled from his lips before he could stop it. Davey...raped. He couldn't process it.

"It’s possible," Schultz said. "They wanted him dead. They had their opportunity. Why not take it?" He walked over to the bed. "I don’t think he has been, but that's what we could possibly be dealing with. If we find a body, there is a good chance sexual activity will be present."

This was his fault. Everything. He'd let this happen. He was responsible. With a shuddering breath, Adam clenched his eyes shut, trying in vain to halt the tears that threatened to spill. Davey's face danced across his mind. His smile, his glare, the way his face contorted in pleasure as Adam thrust inside of him, the pain and anger shining in his eyes as they fought. The hopelessness. Everything. "This is my fault."

Schultz looked at him. "It’s not. You did your duty, and Harris did his. They were caught off guard."

"I shouldn't have left. I should have seen this coming. It was too fucking quiet! I should have known! And now Harris is dead. He's fucking dead! And Davey...I killed them. I killed them both! I should have fucking known!"

"Carson!" Schultz shouted sternly. The man placed his chubby hands on both of Adam's shoulders. "You are the best man I have, but if you are too close to this," he paused look at him, "for whatever reason, I will take you off this case. Got it?"

Adam jerked back, the words sinking in. Off the case. No, that couldn't happen. He couldn't fail Davey, not again. "I understand sir." Taking a deep breath, he turned towards the door, "Simmons! Rodgers! I want this place completely turned apart. The bastard had to leave some trace of himself and we are going to find it." The two officers started blankly at Adam, stunned by his complete change in demeanor. "NOW!"

Davey woke up in a dark room with the headache from hell. He tried to open his mouth, but when he did he felt the pull of tape over it. His hands were bound over his head to a headboard and the blood was already draining from his hands because of the angle. He looked around, trying his best to get his sight adjusted. He had no idea if he was alone or not.

Cole smirked. Good, Marchand was awake. Now the fun could begin. "Welcome back, David." His voice was cool, collected, as he walked towards the bed. The confusion and fear in Davey's eyes sent a ripple of lust and power through him. "There's no need to struggle....Not yet anyway."

Davey wanted to talk, wanted to question. Why the hell wasn’t he dead? He should be dead. That's what they wanted. His eyes locked on the man in front of him, realizing that this was his captor and he had no clue who he was. He was going to have God only knows what done to him by a complete stranger. As if the acts alone weren’t enough.

"I will kill you, David. Don't you worry your pretty little head about that," Cole breathed, making his way to the side of the bed, eyes never leaving his face. Lightly, he traced his finger along Davey's jaw. "But not yet." Cole's smile grew as he watched the horror shining in Davey's eyes. Yes, he would enjoy this.

Davey jerked his head away. "Don’t touch me," he screamed, muffled through the tape. His entire body shook with fear. Had he already been raped? He didn’t feel like he had, but then again, he hadn't moved.

Cole laughed, his blue eyes cold. "You are in no position to be making demands, David." His fingers continued their trail across Davey's face. The trembled that passed through Davey's body urged him on. "I can do whatever I want to you. And I will. You'll be begging me for death before long."

Davey glared at him. His skin crawled with each touch and he tried to wiggle away, whimpering from the rope pulling on his tired hands.

Roughly, Cole brought his hand across Davey's face. The sting of skin against skin was intoxicating. "Struggle all you want, David." His tucked a lock of Davey's hair behind his ear, allowing his fingers to linger a few moments. "You are mine now."

Davey mumbled for the gag to be removed. He needed to talk, wanted to ask questions. With his eyes he pleaded hoping that his captor would listen and grant him his silent request. His face stung from the blow but the need for answers overshadowed the pain.

Cole smirked, knowing just what Davey wanted. His fingers traced along the edge of the tape, teasing the loose fibers. "You want to speak, David? You want to know why I didn't kill you in the apartment?" He shook his head, "Tsk. Tsk. You should know better. If Karn simply wanted you dead, he wouldn't have hired me."

His eyes widened. What the hell was that supposed to mean? He shut his eyes and lifted his head, pushing for him to remove the tape.

A cold laugh fell from his lips. "You need to be taught a lesson, David." Roughly, Cole yanked the tape from Davey's mouth, delighting in the whimper of pain falling from his lips.

Davey had clenched his jaw and tried his best to not let out a whimper, but failed miserably. Tears stung his eyes from the pain and he turned his head. "What are you going to do to me?"

Cole traced under Davey's eyes, brushing at the tears forming in them. His touch was surprisingly gentle, but the look in his eyes told a different tale. "Take everything from you."

Davey locked eyes with him, already broken from everything he's been through... the murder, hiding, watching Harris be killed, and...losing Adam. "There is nothing left."

"There is always something, David,” he whispered, "And I will enjoy breaking you."

"You are a sick son of a bitch. Just get it over with and kill me. Rape me, beat me, whatever, just don’t fucking prolong it anymore."

Cole shook his head, "No, David. There is still a vital piece of this equation missing. When it arrives, I promise you, you'll get your wish."

Davey looks at him, remembering everything that was said at the apartment. He knew things. He knew personal things. "Adam," he whispered.

"Good boy."

"Why? And who the fuck are you?"

"Why?" Cole echoed, his eyes locking on Davey's face. "Because it will kill you to see the pain in his eyes."

Davey felt his eyes tear up and clenched his them shut. A thousand thoughts ran through his head at once. "You'll never get him here alone and he's not going to let you touch me."

"He will come, David. How could he refuse such an invitation?"

Davey stared at him, his face close to his captor. "Do I get a name for the man who is planning on taking everything from me?"

"What's in a name, anyway, David? What will knowing my name change?" Cole asked, shaking his head.

"Well, if a name isn’t important, why won’t you tell me? It’s just a name, right?" Davey brought his head up from the pillow to glare defiantly at him.

"And if it's only a name then why do you wish to know it?"

"I think you owe it to me. If you're planning on," he paused and took a deep breath. "If you're planning on fucking me, I want to know."

"You really do think too much of yourself."

Davey looked at him, a bit of hope in his eyes. Maybe his body wouldn’t be taken. Maybe some shred of dignity would stay intact.

"I wouldn't call it fucking. There would have to be lust involved for that. No, David, I plan on breaking you."

Fear spread through over his face. Maybe if he twisted his hands enough he could slit his own wrist with the ropes. Anything would have to be better than having someone force themselves upon you.

Cole smirked, shaking his head "I highly doubt you could lose enough blood to end your life that way. But be my guest." He turned, making his way back towards the stairs.

"God, I fucking hate you," Davey screamed at him in frustration, arching off the bed. "Untie my hands, they hurt."

He continued on his path, not bothering to turn back towards Davey. "Enjoy the pain. It will the last thing you feel."

A loud scream echoed throughout the room as it bored from Davey's mouth. He had to get away from this man. He was going to go nuts like this. He was scared, unsure and angry. With every bit of emotion in him, he screamed Adam's name praying that somewhere out there he could hear it.

Full casting is announced for the West End season of the critically acclaimed ALL OR NOTHING – THE MOD MUSICAL, based on the story of the Small Faces. Joining the previously announced Carol Harrison as Kay Marriott and Chris Simmons as Steve Marriott, will be Samuel Pope as Young Steve Marriott, Stefan Edwards as Kenney Jones, Stanton Wright as Ronnie Lane, Alexander Gold as Ian McLagan, Edward Elgood as Jimmy Winston, Karis Anderson as P.P. Arnold and Russell Floyd as Don Arden. Also in the cast are Daniel Beales, Alfie Harrison-Foreman, Dani Acors and Emily Daniels. David Shute and Danielle Johnson will play Steve Marriott and Kay Marriott at certain performances. ALL OR NOTHING’s limited season will run at the Arts Theatre, London from 6 February to 11 March, with a press night on Thursday 8 February.

Written and directed by the award-winning actress Carol Harrison, ALL OR NOTHING is the story of four charismatic young kids from East London with humour, attitude, passion and, above all, talent. They became the Small Faces and were rocketed into the big time, only to discover the path to success is paved with exploitation, betrayal and, ultimately, tragedy.

In 1965, a new phenomenon erupted out of London’s East End. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. ALL OR NOTHING follows the rise and demise of the Small Faces, the band who encapsulated all that was Mod – a unique blend of taste and testosterone, clothes-obsessed and street-wise – but most of all, a dedication to rhythm ‘n’ blues. The musical celebrates the unique sound of this iconic Mod band, with all the Small Faces’ hits, including Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes the Nice, Itchycoo Park and, of course, All or Nothing.

Carol Harrison is probably best known for her role as Louise Raymond in EastEnders. Other television roles include seven years as Gloria in Brushstrokes, Loretta opposite Ray Winstone in Get Back, and Dorothy in two series of London’s Burning. Carol’s theatre work includes Michael Rudman’s production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman at the National, Ripen Our Darkness at the Royal Court, Alan Parker’s production of Alfie at the Liverpool Playhouse and Lee Hall’s Cooking with Elvis at the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe. She was also a founder member of Half Moon Theatre in London’s East End. Her film credits include The Elephant Man, Quadrophenia and Human Traffic.

Chris Simmons is probably best known for playing the role of DC Mickey Webb for over twelve years in the long running ITV series The Bill. He has also appeared in EastEnders as Mark Garland and in the Tracy Beaker spin-off CBBC show, The Dumping Ground. Chris’s theatre credits include Alan Ayckbourn’s Absent Friends (Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage), Entertaining Strangers (Lyric Hammersmith), Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (tour), Iago in Othello (tour) and Epicoene (Tristan Bates Theatre).

Samuel Pope is making his West End debut. He trained at the University of Manchester and the Royal Academy of Music and has since played Bob Cratchit in the UK tour of A Christmas Carol and Lon Smith in Meet Me in St Louis at the Landor Theatre.

Stefan Edwards previously appeared in the Arts Theatre in American Justice and was in The Mousetrap at St Martin’s Theatre in London’s West End. He was part of the London 2012 Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies directed by Danny Boyle and Kim Gavin.

Stanton Wright’s theatre credits include Take Me Here by the Dishwasher at the Barbican, actor/puppeteer in This Moose Belongs to Me and Jackie and the Baboon (Unicorn and Orange Tree Theatres), Florence in Florence Loves You for Theatre503, Devil in The Glorious Damnation of Eddie Small (Union Theatre/Bedlam Theatre) and Renaissance Body (RSC/British Museum).

Alexander Gold began his career marketing for former Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies and then joined the publishers of The Word and Mixmag. At the same time, he performed all over the world with acts as diverse as 1977 punk legends the Boys (Joey Ramone’s favourite band) to the United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra, with whom he spent a month at Dollywood, as a guest of Dolly Parton. He played Clash drummer Topper Headon opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers’s Joe Strummer in the film London Town.

Edward Elgood last appeared at the Arts Theatre in Richard III. His other theatre credits include King Charles III (Wyndham’s), the UK tour of The Mousetrap (No.1 Tour); Mucedorus (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse), The Maids (The Cockpit) and The Lady of Pleasure (Shakespeare’s Globe – Sam Wanamaker Festival).

Karis Anderson is a member of girl band, Stooshe. They broke on to the UK music scene in 2012 with the release of their single Love Me, featuring American rapper Travie McCoy. They have gone on to have four Top 20 hits, were nominated for the BBC Sound Poll, and toured with J-Lo and Nicki Minaj. Their single Black Heart spent over 16 weeks in the UK charts and was nominated for Best British Single at the 2013 Brit Awards. All or Nothing marks Karis’s West End stage debut.

Russell Floyd will be known to many for his regular roles as Michael Rose in EastEnders and DC Ken Drummond in The Bill. His theatre credits include Sir Courtly Nice (RSC), Going to a Party (National Theatre), Fit and Proper People (Soho Theatre) and Forget Me Not (Bush Theatre).

The show is endorsed and supported by many of those who feature in its story, including singer P.P. Arnold and Steve Marriott’s daughter, Mollie Marriott, who is the show’s vocal coach and creative consultant.

ALL OR NOTHING – THE MOD MUSICAL is directed by Carol Harrison, with musical supervision by Pat Davey. ALL OR NOTHING – THE MOD MUSICAL is produced in the West End by Rock ‘n’ Roll Productions.
