The Beach Boys of 1940
Hey all! This week I am going to be discussing one of my favorite events in history, World War Two! Specifically, I will be focusing on the Battle of Dunkirk which was part of the even bigger Battle of France. To set up Dunkirk, I must give a brief lesson on France during this time.
In May of 1940, Germany got bold and decided to take over France. This only took six weeks, which is surprising to most people. France was well defended, or so they thought. There was a lot of money sunk into something called the Maginot Line. The line was a series of bunkers constructed after World War One, just in case Germany invaded France again. The Maginot Line was a good idea; at least it was on paper. The bunkers faced Germany, and could stop a sizable force coming from Germany. As the border line got closer to Belgium and Luxembourg, the bunkers became weaker because France did not expect those two smaller countries to invade. Germany’s military leaders, Hitler and various other generals stationed in Europe, saw this line and pulled a tactical move from Germany’s World War One playbook. This military action had Germany going through Belgium. This is exactly what happened: Hitler took Belgium, broke through the weak fortifications of the Maginot Line and took France within six weeks. Much like when that happened in 1914, Britain freaked out and decided to put on its police badge and try to bail the rest of Europe out. Within a month, they decided to invade the north of France. This was called Operation Dynamo, or by its more popular name and the name of the town where the operation took place was called, Dunkirk.
Tumblr media
Before the British Expeditionary Forces (BEF) were pushed back to the northern French coast, they pushed the Germans south as well as east. When the Germans received reinforcements, the BEF had to retreat. French and Belgium forces were forced to surrender due to the ferocity of the German army called Oberkommando der Wermacht (OKW for short) under the command of General Gerd von Rundstedt (basically Erwin Rommel’s rival in the German army) and General Ewald von Kleist. Von Rundstedt was a remarkable general, and his prowess during World War Two made him an admirable enemy for anyone who sought out to challenge him. The push back to the coast would only mean that the BEF had little time before complete annihilation by the OKW and the Nazi’s Air Force known as the Luftwaffe (not to be confused with waffles). The British made it back to the coast, but they had to set up a defensive perimeter around the French town of Dunkirk. The BEF, remaining French, and Belgian soldiers had to sit and wait, only to hope that they would not get bombed and that help would be on its way soon.
Tumblr media
It became evident to the BEF as well as the fleeing French and Belgium army that they had to turn back. The British navy had to send ships across the English Channel and get the remaining forces. The Navy however, was skeptical about crossing the waters to pick up the soldiers at Dunkirk. They had a right to be skeptical. Germany would place Unterseeboots, U-Boats for short, all over the British Channel which would prohibit any successful rescue mission. The U-Boat was a typical German submarine. It would also lead to several transport and medical ships to sinking, causing several men to die by drowning or any other torpedo related incidents such as explosions. Eventually, the navy decided that enough was enough and that they would no longer send multiple ships at once due to losses. There were still rescues attempts, but one went at a time. They were not destroyers either, and those were key to curbing any U-Boat tactics that Germans were throwing against the British. Destroyers are ships designed to take down any threat of an enemy submarine, but the navy would not support any notion. They did however, support the use of using civilian vessels as a means of decoy to get to Dunkirk to rescue the soldiers.
Tumblr media
The British Navy would commandeer small sailing or fishing vessels that were off the southern coast of England to have a way for soldiers to come home, however, most of the vessels were run by civilians who disobeyed the navy and went on their own. This was an extremely risky idea, but, several men and women were determined to bring the British soldiers home. These civilian run vessels were given the name The Little Ships of Dunkirk. The ships would ferry men from the coast of Dunkirk to destroyers or other ships that would then take them back to various ports in England. All while the smaller ships acted as shuttles to the bigger ones, the British Royal Air Force would provide coverage so the evacuations from Dunkirk would go smoothly.
Tumblr media
The RAF was extremely helpful during the evacuation from Dunkirk. Though, many soldiers believed them to be useless because they never showed themselves, many pilots took high in the sky to take out German Stuka bombers that were targeting soldiers and transports. Stukas had easy pickings during the evacuation due to a lack of coverage that would have protected soldiers, there was also the delay it took for transports to load soldiers and wounded men causing ships to be destroyed. The British reaction to the problem of the Stuka bombings was the Supermarine Spitfire. These short-range planes could easily be launched from various airfields around Southern England and sent to the English Channel and Dunkirk. The role of the Spitefire was to find any enemy planes or bombers and shoot them down. Specifically, bombers and dive bombers, those were the German ships dealing the most damage during the evacuation. While most of the fighting was above the clouds, there was a few interactions where they would fight over the sea above transports or other vessels to prevent any damage done to those. While the soldiers of Dunkirk do not agree that the RAF did their part during the evacuation of Dunkirk, they certainly did a good job of prevent any more disasters and destruction. While the soldiers retreating from Dunkirk saw themselves as cowards running from a loss, the home front had a different opinion.
Tumblr media
When BEF soldiers returned from Dunkirk to Dover and other various English ports, they were embraced as heroes. This blew the minds of almost every soldier hearing this. They thought themselves as cowards because all they could do was wait and run, or be killed. It all boiled down to survival and longing for hope, which is what the soldiers at Dunkirk did, it was the only thing they could do. This inspired England and the rest of the United Kingdom. The British referred to this as the “Dunkirk Spirit” where times were grim, but they would be able to push through no matter what happens. This boost in morale despite total defeat spurred the British to do better in a war against Germany where they seemed to be fighting alone for now. While Hitler waited for British peace terms to come in after Dunkirk, the opposite happened and allowed the way for the British to learn how to fight better in another world war.
Tumblr media
Dunkirk is a crazy, historical story where patience was tested, but rewarded with soldiers coming home. Roughly 400,000 soldiers arrived on the beaches of Dunkirk hoping to liberate their French and Belgian allies from the Germans, and 340,000 of that original number retreated. Though this was a colossal defeat, the British persevered.
Next Week: I think it would be neat to go back into ancient history and look at how successful the Roman Empire was at cultural assimilation, but ironically, that was their downfall too.

Finding Happiness Through Introspection
In the immortal words of Abraham Lincoln, “Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be” (Lincoln, 1863). The essence of self-determination theory, a psychological framework developed by Deci and Ryan (2000), is captured in this adage. Fulfilling your basic psychological needs and intrinsic motivation is where the choice for happiness begins. Faced with the numerous…

The Doorway Dilemma: An Eccentric Tale of Adaptation
In the whimsical world of peculiar proportions, where doorways have a tendency to be overly modest, our tale unfolds. Eccentric encounters with these narrow apertures beckon characters to adjust their perspectives rather than awaiting a miraculous door tr
Perspective. Shift it and the whole universe unravels. “Don’t you ever have budget problems due to our irregular hours?” I once asked a friend that. Insensitive, I know. We are in the same perplexing scenario.”No, if you can’t eat large, lessen your appetite. If you can’t have it now, don’t want it now.” Right, right. I thought. Frustration is the best answer of our emotions for things that are…

Becoming Your Own Legend: Letting Go of Heroes and Embracing Your Own Journey
E.D. Maramat/Erwinism “I don’t want to be the next Michael Jordan.” The heavy thud of an open mouth with a cold stare of disbelief enough to pierce through anyone, that’s how this comment was met not so many years ago by now a legendary player. Or if he had said he wanted to be the next MJ, every single thing that he would have done would be weighed against the merits of his predecessor. To…
