PSA to any men who think it’s okay to hit on random women and take the woman’s laughter as a sign that it’s okay to continue:

First of all, don’t hit on random women because most of us hate that. But I just want to point out that just because a woman is laughing in response to what you’re saying, doesn’t mean she digs it. Myself and many other women may be laughing because we’re nervous, and that’s just how our nerves choose to present themselves. A random man coming up and asking us what we’re doing after our shift ends is bound to make a lot of us nervous, and sometimes nervous laughter is the body’s response to that very awkward and sometimes frightening scenario. And sometimes we’re laughing because we hope that whatever you’re saying is just a joke or teasing, so we laugh along. But not because you’re actually funny, it’s more like “haha, yeah. Good one. Leave me alone now, please.” Don’t just assume that because a woman is laughing at your (dumb) antics that it means she likes it. Sad to say, but very often in situations where a man comes up and starts hitting on her, she starts to feel kinda powerless. And maybe we’re pretending to have a “pleasant” reaction because we’re afraid of a situation escalating into something not so pleasant. So please just like, don’t hit on us out of nowhere to begin with and furthermore don’t assume a lady likes it just because she’s laughing.

This happened to me today and I just felt like sharing. This guy asked what I was doing when my shift ended and if I’d like to come work out with him. I laughed because I thought he was joking, but nope! He just kept prodding. So ladies, stay safe! And fellas, do better, quite frankly.

I think one of the most “how I love being a woman” moments happened to me a few days ago.

I was walking up the long up hill sidewalk to get to my car. I’m wearing a very short skirt and it’s slightly windy so I’m doing my best to hold it down and cover myself in the back. At one point I glance around to make sure I didn’t pass my car and I make eye contact with this girl walking behind me. She smiles and says hi and I do the same. Before I turn back around she goes, “you’re good by the way.” She must have seen my confusion because she gestured to my skirt and says, “you’re good. I saw you and figured I’d let you know and walk behind you just to make sure because…” She then gestures to the two guys walking behind us. I thank her and carry on. She walks behind me for the rest of the journey until I reach my car and we part ways.

I had never met this girl in my life and she did that out of solidarity. She also complimented my outfit at some point.
