Chilchuck analysis speedrun: As a hardworking half-foot who grew up poor and discriminated against and had his gullibility taken advantage of multiple times in his early adventuring days, Chilchuck thinks optimism is a dangerous flaw. Like with his wife or with parties hiring him as sacrifice, being open or having good faith is vulnerability which can get you hurt, so he processes and shows all his stress as anger instead of worry. Doing strict dieting probably isn’t helping the irritability what with hunger, and on top of being a hunger suppressant alcohol might be the main stress reliever he has.

This might sound surprising, but I really like this! We don't see just how well Chilchuck's vision of her match though since it didn't get much far. As we see with Laios’ shapeshifter clones, having an accurate shapeshifter is harder than one could think!

Easier to miss and more interesting though!! "It seems like Marcille B has awfully weak determination hmmm" implying Chilchuck thinks Marcille has a strong will. I think it’s especially telling when hand in hand with Chilchuck in an early chapter going "Oops not good I missed [that taking dead Kabru’s party’s wet food wasn’t the best moral decision], that’s Marcille for you." and such, where it seems like Chil sees her as someone who has strong convictions and admires/relies on her for it in some ways.

Funnily enough Chilchuck’s not the only one being flattering about the other's hair, because Marcille's shapeshifter of him's hair is... Fluffier? Throughout the whole chapter too so not just a one-off or a coincidence. Tempting to pat and carress perhaps? ✦ Ends up falling asleep, the sound of the waves and the secluded shade from the sun causing his eyes to flutter shut. You can’t help but laugh a little, returning from your time in the water to study his sleeping form. He looks so peaceful like this, and you don’t have the heart to wake him up…

✦ If you do somehow manage to get him fully in the water, be prepared for him to get targeted by the tide. Maybe you even suggest getting him a float, which he gives you that blank stare in reply.

“There, that’s not so bad, is it?” You say as he finds himself in the middle of a tube float, eyes narrowed towards you.

“This makes me feel like a kid.” Chilchuck complains, yet you see him grip onto it tighter as an incoming wave makes an appearance.

You pull it over to you, the inflatable bumping into your stomach as you give him that teasing grin. “Guess you’re stuck with me while we’re out here, huh?”

The half-foot groans, debating on whether or not he’d make it if he tried to swim back to shore right now.

✦ Wears a light t-shirt and shorts, opting to be comfy! She also has a hat she wears to help keep the sun out of her eyes. If she did plan on swimming, I like to imagine she’d have a swim shirt and a one piece swimsuit!

✦ Like her brother, she was excited to see all the shells and creatures at the beach, bringing you things she found fascinating. You might even find her entranced with a sand dollar and stating how pretty it is.

✦ Walks into the water hand in hand with you, but also really enjoys walking along the sand near the shore. As the sun sets, she intertwines her fingers with yours, leading you along and watching the pinks and blues in the sky reflect on the waves.

✦ Also definitely goes on a picnic with you, the beach making her cheeks even more rosy than usual. You can’t help but tell her how cute she looks in her outfit, her hair loosely blowing in the breeze. Falin would give you a sweet smile, the same one you fell in love with.

✦ Don’t be surprised if she leads you back to the water after you make sure she’s not getting burnt, insisting that she wants to enjoy how cool the waves feel. You’re more than happy to walk out a little deeper with her, noticing how she still keeps your hand in her own.

“It’s so nice out here…” You heard her mutter, a content smile dimpling her cheeks. The sunset left a sweet gradient in her hair, something that made you unable to look away.

“It really is. Too bad it’s getting dark,” you reply, a little disappointed that the day is already over. Falin squeezed your hand, pulling you away from your thoughts.

“Maybe we should stay and watch the stars come out.” Her voice was so gentle, causing you to give her a grin of your own.

“Let’s stay a little longer.”

✦ Like the official art we have of him swimming with Kuro, he’s definitely sporting a pair of swim trunks and flip flops, with his hair in his signature ponytail.

✦ He and Kuro are so excited to swim, and drag you along to the water as soon as you get there. Of course, Mick is either clinging to you or to Kuro when in the waves, not seeking to really swim on his own.

✦ You definitely enjoy watching them swim and play around more than you’d like to admit, especially with Mick hiding his face and complaining when Kuro decides to shake all the water out of his coat.

✦ Mick really likes finding shells he thinks look neat, and showing them off to you and Kuro proudly. Maybe you even find yourself building a sand castle, with him and his buddy watching closely and moving to help you. He’s in charge of decorating it, while you’re in charge of building it! Kuro helps dig up some of the sand to use.

✦ The three of you end up getting a sweet treat, cooling off in the shade and enjoying the time spent together. Knowing Mickbell, he’s going to lay his head in your lap as he rests after so much activity, looking up at you with that cheeky grin he usually has.

“I could get used to this!” Mickbell sighs, nuzzling into your lap as he makes himself comfortable. Kuro is watching the waves, sitting beside you as the sun begins to fade from the horizon.

“I would’ve thought you’d be ready to go home a lot sooner.” You teased him, brushing his messy bangs out of his face. Scoffing, he made sure you saw as he rolled his eyes.

“If I didn’t have you and Kuro, maybe… But this is something we’ll have to do again. Right, Kuro?” The Kobold nodded, causing a warm grin to spread on your face. He was certainly right about that.

I think what I loved the most about Dungeon Meshi's finale is that the opportunity was there to have a bittersweet, almost tragic ending in the Winged Lion's Curse, but the end result is instead extremely funny and is only a tragedy to the person it targeted, which is so quintessentially Dungeon Meshi.

Every reader (and Laios himself) thinks that the Demon cursing Laios so that his deepest desire will never be fulfilled as vengeance for defeating it would mean that all of his efforts to save Falin would come to nothing, and it would have even made narrative sense. The entire journey was about accepting death and change; if Falin was truly gone then they would have had to accept that they tried their best and have to let her go.

But no. Chilchuck rightfully calls it, there's no fucking way the curse would mean Falin's death. As much as Laios loves his sister, there is one thing that he loves more than anything else in the world, and it's monsters.

So the end result of the curse is that Laios' kingdom is now a safe haven free of all monsters as none of them wish to go near him, his extensive research into food science has created a continent of plenty, his legendary defeat of the demon and the monsters of the dungeon has given him the badass name of The Devourer, and everyone he loves gets to stay with him for as long as he lives as he has gained political power to force entire nations to bend the knee. He should be truly happy.

But, not really. He will never get to see a living monster again when they're all terrified of The Devourer King. He will spend the rest of his days never again able to study the special interest that has defined his entire life, even if the tradeoff is creating paradise for all peoples.

But for everyone else it fucking rules though. Thank you for taking one for the team, Laios.

Chilchuck is often surrounded by taller races due to his nature of work, so he's pretty used to being around taller people in general, but in a relationship...

Well, let's just say that brought a new set of difficulties. It's not like he was unaware that these problems would arise, he just wasn't aware of what they'd be.

Like the fact he either has to jog to stay by your side, or you've got to slow down your pace exponentially.

Also despises that he can't just casually kiss your lips, he either has to ask for one so you can bend down, or be drunk enough to ask to be picked up.

Will casually, and trying not to bring attention to his lack of height, ask you to grab things off high shelfs. Only you though, he'd rather die than ask some other person.

Gets super annoyed when ignorant people assume he's some child you took in, or make jokes about the size difference.

You'll have to calm him down and reassure him it's okay.

When he's drunk he might let his walls down a bit, and voice his insecurities- wouldn't you prefer someone taller? someone who can keep up with you?

or he'll mention "i'm the tallest halfling, y'know, so you're actually with someone like super tall-" yeah, at the point he's just babbling nonsense and it's best to get him home.

On a different note, Chilchuck doesn't mind being little spoon or big spoon, so it's up to you on how you two cuddle~

Okay, size differences aside!

Chilchuck and you both have pretty sensitive ears. Up until recently though, you lived in a small village like most Firbolgs so loud noises didn't happen too often

Now that you live in a bustling city with Chilchuck, you find your ears hurting a lot-

Chilchuck fills himself with pride when he helps you learn how to handle the noise.

Although on occasion loud noises still startle him/hurt, so if you cover his ears to help expect him to get flustered.

In the end, you two make a very cute couple~

And he does his darndest to make sure you never meet his dungeon party bc he knows that idiot Laios is going to ask you the most stupidest questions known to mankind and he can't have that-
