how I think CANON kageyama really thinks about romance based on facts
This is more on just character analysis and observation but this is all speculation because if I'm being honest as a former Haikyuu x reader writer, I think he is the most mischaracterized and has potential for a different type of x reader, rather than typical romance.
Also I'm saying this as a Kageyama fan! This is just my thoughts jotted down hehe
I don't think Kageyama really had the chance to experience romance. Ever. I mean I could be wrong but based on what we we've seen there wasn't really time for it or even a single mention on it
Though given multiple chances to show it, he never showed any outright attraction to anyone outside of volleyball. Obviously this is not a shojo manga, it's a sports one but there are still multiple times where some sort of attraction has been shown towards characters.
He is unfazed by Kiyoko in a season 1 scene, he never fawns over any of the managers the way other characters do. (The only exception is when Saeko introduces herself and he and Hinata get excited) this isnt rly important tho, a lot of character dont do this
the only time he has ever been excited or passionate is when it comes to volleyball, the very reason why he stuck so close to hinata in the first place (this could argue for kagehina ((so true)) but that's a separate post lol)
HOWEVER he's also not repulsed by attraction towards him, as shown in the bonus chapter when he's aware that he and Atsumu are referred to by fans as the "Ikemen Players" and that people watch him for that; he says he's all for it because it get's people into volleyball
But the CORE REASON on why I think he never thought about romance is because he outright states in season 4 that he's not good at emotion, and his past. He likely does not know the feeling and even with friends he was still learning on friendship, but he wants to learn! (that's probably why he was so keen on asking oikawa for help in kitagawa-daichii)
Anyway so conclusion as an x reader writer, would he be datable? I mean it's not impossible. After all we hardly see his life outside of volleyball, it would just be challenging, just like getting him to play on a team. In fact it would even be cute to see him think about it.
I wrote all this bc I think it would be interesting to see this kageyama in fics, instead of the usual tsundere/constantly getting mad and embarrassed ver of him (me,,I used to write him like this,,,)
Now how would I write canon Kageyama off with staying true to his given character as much as possible?
I think he would be very calm and nonchalant about it. They've shown us that he's very aware of his emotional weaknesses in understanding but that he's ALWAYS willing to try and connect with others.
So while I think he can most definitely live his life without romance, I think that he is bound to think about it at least once and contemplate it. He might even be open to trying it for the sake of trying something that's so common with others, but in my opinion he will always love volleyball more than anything else, and that's not a terrible thing at all.

~Karasuno and the type of books they would read
°Sawamura Daichi-I feel like he would read some kind of self help book that would help with anger issues and stress.
°Sugawara Koushi- Smut.
°Azumane Asahi-The cute rom-coms with cartoon covers.
°Shimizu Kiyoko-Dark fantasy that sometimes has the most hideous smut.
°Ennoshita Chikara-Mangas and specifically Shonen mangas.
°Narita Kazuhito-Self help books to become a better person.
°Kinoshita hisahi-Shojo mangas and he will never admit that he cried a river while reading and watching your name.
°Tanaka Ryunosuke-The household wife's guide to cooking is a book that he reads for fun.
°Nishinoya Yuu-Any type of book that has pictures in it and he'll just look through the pictures instead of reading.
Hinata Shoyo- He's a huge fan of comics and mangas that have a female protagonist.(He thinks they're the coolest.)
Kageyama Tobio- Can't read. But is an expert when it comes to reading books about volleyball.
°Tsukishima Kei- Sci-fi books that have a dystopian setting and very cool ass characters.
°Yamaguchi Tadashi-High fantasy that has stuff like murder, arson etc.(Yknow that usual)
°Hitoka Yachi-Any type of manga and sometimes borrows rom-coms from Asahi.
( A.N-I'll make a future post for books that they most definitely own.So stay healthy and wait for me ~~)

Fired- Ukai x reader

MASTERLIST
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evenings at the store were... uneventful, just a few highschool students passed by to get drinks or snacks before heading to the library after class.
It wasn't your dream job by any means, but it lasted only about three hours long if your boss didn't take too long coaching Karasuno's volleyball team and it paid okay (as okay as it could, being so easy and giving you the freedom to even study if you had no costumers)
You were in college, this little job helping you buy the few useless things your family rightfully refused buying for you.
It was a thursday evening, 5pm to be exact, your stupid economics book lying on the counter in front of you, so boring it could kill.
As background noise there was Shoyo, rummaging through bags of chips like a desperate child, making it impossible for you to concentrate.
''Hinata, pick one already''you urged.
''Sorry!''he said, peeking from behind the snack shelf with an enthusiastic but still apologetic smile.
''What are you doing here anyway? I can´t imagine you missing practice on purpose''
Shojo was obsessed with volleyball, passionate.
''There wasn't practice today, and the team wanted to go home already''putting three bags of chips on the counter, he explained, a pout clear on his lips.
Huh, weird.
Ukai said he WAS going to practice that day, he wouldn't have asked you to go to work if he wasn't.
Maybe he had plans he didn't want to tell.
A date?
The sole thought sent cold shivers down your spine, hopefully it wasn't for a date.
I should explain now, that the money this job paid wasn´t the only reason why you decided to work there. Maybe Ukai's presence had a bit to do with it.
''Y/n?''Shojo shook his hand in front of your face, making you snap out of it ''You okay?''
''I just... spaced out''you explained ''4,50''
Nodding, the little tangerine searched his pockets for the money, getting distracted when the door opened.
The smell of smoke instantly filled your nose, followed by a very deep and stoic voice.
''Hinata, what are you doing here?''
''Coach!''Shojo responed, smiling ''I'm buying chips''
''Go home, it's late''the blonde spoke, demanding, his presence making you melt with every step closer he took.
Instead of saying anything back, Shojo nodded, put money in your hand and quickly left, running out like he was scared for his life.
For a moment, the store fell silent, Ukai calmly walked around to check that everything was okay, and you decided to pretend you were extremely concentrated on your book, because otherwise you would be eyeing him down.
He was so ridiculously hot, blonde hair tucked back with his signature black band and a loose white shirt on, the first few buttons undone. This outfit was... too formal for him, he usually wore hoodies with the store´s apron on top.
Did he really go on a date? why else would he lie about where he was going?
Even more so dressed that way...
''Whatchu' looking at, kid?''he asked.
O shit, you were eyeing him down.
Pretending not to care, you rolled your eyes, annoyed at the stupid nickname he always used. He was only four years older and acted like he was 90.
''Just how ugly you look''you lied, making him laugh.
''You're the only one who said that today''he sat on a small stool near the soda fridge, fixing his hair.
If it wasn't impossible, you would think he was trying to make you jealous.
''Someone told you that you look good? tell them to get their eyes checked''
''Will do, I don´t think she'll change her mind tho''
SHE?
Definitely a fucking date, and you couldn't demostrate how much it bothered you.
Knowing you had no right to be even sligthly mad about this, but still being furious and annoyed, you closed your book and started gathering your things to leave. Trying to look as calm as you could, if he was there, your shift was over.
''How was the day?''he quickly changed the subject, his tone still playful ''Lots of costumers?''
He knew the answer to that.
''The usual''your voice was dry but careful not to express emotion.
To be honest, you had never shown Ukai any romantic or physical interest, but he was so out of your league it scared you to confess or make advances. Also, he always called you ''kid'' and pointed out how young and naive you were.
After a while of working with him, you got used to the idea of admiring him from afar, but didn't consider the obvious possibility of him getting a girlfriend.
You just had to get over it, leave your crush in the past and see him as what he was, your boss.
''I´ll head out, you need me to come back tomorrow?''you said, putting on your coat,
''As always, why you ask?'' he looked confused.
''Nothing''
''Okay, see you tomorrow then''
''At what time? wouldn't want you to be late for your date''you thougt, but didn't say it.
Your footsteps towards the door were extremely loud, a tense feeling of jealousy and embarrassment flooding your senses.
As soon as cold air hit you, you cursed in between your teeth. The walk home felt longer than usual, with more overthinking than actually walking.
Of course, your feelings towards Ukai were destined to end or be kept in your fantasies forever.
You couldn't complain, you weren't entitled to anything and you were too much of a coward.
That night, you closed your eyes wondering how that woman he was dating must've been feeling, how she felt when his hands touched her, rough and sweet at the same time, demanding.
And his lips... probably soft, tasting of cheap cigarettes, leaving marks to dominate and show she belonged to him.
Oh, what wouldn't you give to feel all of that yourself.
The next day your alarm ringed too early, leaving you plenty of time to overthink while you showered, had breakfast and tried to study for a few hours before having to head out to work.
Before leaving, you looked in the mirror, fixing the short, black pleaded skirt you put on because it was warmer outside.
As always, a short glimpse of hope made you wish he would notice your outfit. (too revealing to work in a small convenience store)
On your way, you crossed paths with a couple of Ukai's students who greeted you enthusiastically, dressed in their sport's uniform.
A couple of them went out to buy drinks for the whole team before friday's practice every week, so it wasn't weird seeing them walk back to the school with bags.
What was weird that day, was Ukai sitting behind the counter with his apron still on, crossed legs up on the counter, leaning back on the chair while lazily smoking instead of ready to leave quickly.
''Hey''he greeted, still not moving.
''Hey''you said, walking past him to leave your things in the back, assuming he would leave right when you got out.
''We have to restock the gum''
''Okay, I´ll get to it after cleaning''
And, he was in the same exact position when you appeared with the broom in hand.
''Don't you have practice?''
''The boys wanted to have a day for themselves''
''And you let them?''you asked, even more confused but trying to look uninterested.
''Well, I have more interesting things to do''
''I thought the interesting plan was yesterday''
''Yesterday?''
''Mhm''avoiding his gaze, you started cleaning the first aisle ''I would think that going on a date is way more exciting than being here, or at practice''
A small laugh escaped his lips, choked.
''If you consider having lunch with my grandma a date, I guess you´re right''
Upon hearing his words, you froze in place.
His grandma?
Before your brain could elaborate, or even realize how stupid and out of proportion your reaction was, he said something, something you would never have expected to hear from him.
''Is that why you got so mad yesterday?''he asked, playful ''because you thought I went on a date?''
This shit had to be a joke, not real, so you promptly ignored him, back turned to pretend you didn´t hear anything.
''How rude of you, not responding to your boss''
What the fuck was happening? Why was he acting like this?
''It was a stupid question''desperately trying to control the situation, you spoke, turning to look at him.
Ukai´s face was easy to read, showing how much he enjoyed himself, arms crossed and a smug smile on his lips.
''Then answer''he dared, standing up.
''I don't care what you do on your free time''
''What a bummer''
He huffed and you looked at him wide eyed, what did he mean by that? This was certainly new, and it didn't make any sense, bizarre and out of place, because in the couple months you had worked for him, he never acted this way.
Ukay was usually a serius, kind of dry and tired man, he probably had cracked two or three jokes in the time you had known him, but never this way.
''Ukai, what do you mean?''you asked, now seriously wondering if the man in front of you was a clone and not the actual Ukai.
Your question seemed to break his facade, making him look away and nervously fix his hairband, letting out a frustrated curse that you couldn't quite hear.
''Nevermind, I was messing with you''he said, quickly getting in the back.
Intuition told you he was lying, and with the urge to find out what all of this was, your feet moved on their own, following him.
Ukai stood with his hands resting on the small table he had full of bills and random paper, cheeks furiously red, even more when he saw you there.
''How rude of you, not responding to your employee''you joked, trying to ease his nerves(and also yours)
''I...played a dumb prank on you, it was inappropriate''now he acted like himself ''I´m sorry if I made you uncomfortable''
''You didn't make me uncomfortable, but I am extremely confused''
''Forget it, kid, a prank doesn't need that much thought''
For some reason, you still thought he was lying, so in a desperate attempt to clear things up and annoyed because he used the little nickname, you walked towards him with an intimidating gaze, resting your hands on the table right next to his with a loud and determined thump.
If this was a prank, you had the right to get him back, and if it wasn't...well, you would NOT miss a juicy chance.
''Seems like you tried to make me jealous''squinting your eyes, you got real close to his face.
Ukai almost jumped back, but after a few seconds of hesitation, he stood his ground, eyes turning dark.
''What if I did?''he said, that tone of enjoyment from earlier coming back mixed with dominance.
There was no going back now, you had to take the fucking chance.
''Didn't take you for a man who gets all scared when a woman doesn't get that he is flirting''you teased.
''Stop trying to piss me off'' he was so close that the familiar scent of his perfume mixed with cheap tobacco flooded every inch of you,
''And what if I am? are you going to do something about it?''
In seconds, his left hand held your chin up, bringing you close to slam his lips against yours with such force it could leave bruises, however you didn´t care if your lips fell off after this, because you kissed Ukai.
This was the kind of kiss that leaves people gasping for air, panting for more touch.
''I knew you liked me''he said, smug, still holding your chin.
''Who said that?''you challenged, walking around the table to bump against him on purpose.
Ukai didn´t flinch but smiled, confidently placing a hand on your waist and the other just at the edge where your short black skirt met your thigh. Instinctively, you shivered, melting under his touch.
Before responding, his lips attacked yours again with burning hunger, getting you desperate on purpose.
''I know you wear these little things just to tease me''his hand traveled up your thigh, teasing.
''Took you long enough to notice''
''Oh''he chuckled, voice deep, his digits moving up to meet the edge of your underwear ''I noticed, every time''
Almost shivering from excitement, you kissed him again, biting his bottom lip to earn a delicious groan and a more adventurous hand placed on your clit teasingly. He didn´t put pressure but smiled down at you, sinister, waiting for you to beg.
His name fell from your lips like a silent prayer and he took it upon himself to make you suffer a little bit, moving his digits only a couple of times.
''What?''he asked, still smiling, aware of how he had you in the palm of his hand with such little effort ''why don't you tell me what you want?''
Waiting for a response, Ukai placed a slow kiss on your cheek, the closest he could to your lips without touching them. It was a clear way of demostrating how he could make you moan so easy, melt under his touch.
''Touch me''you asked, panting.
''Mhm''he nodded, devouring your lips one more time and finally moving his fingers against your heat with a rythm.
Small moans filled the room while he worked his magic, leaving your panties a soaking mess, sticky and warm.
A small knot formed inside you, brain going fuzzy and shockwaves travelling up and down your body. Desperate to feel closer to him, to feel more, you needed to kiss him again and palm his growing bulge. As a response he groaned again, grinding against your hand for a few moments until he unexpectedly took a step back.
''Get on the table''before you could protest, he spoke ''take off your panties first, leave the skirt on''
You more than happily obligued, throwing away a couple of papers and sitting, legs immediately open for him.
Ukai observed the mess he made, proud to see your blushing face and eyes asking him to fuck you senseless, his dick was about to explode, so before going back to kiss you, he took off every piece of fabric in the way, leaving just his shirt on.
Your eyes shoot open at the mouth-watering sight, thick and veiny, slightly bent at the tip, but he didn´t let you look much before he was already kissing you, left hand on your neck while the other teased your folds.
''You are such a good girl''he spoke, inserting a finger slowly ''Your pussy is clenching so much, like you want to cum just now, and I didn't even move''
His words were like a drug, addictive, tempting and a great way to make you go crazy when he finally moved his finger, bending it with the sole purpose of finding the sweetest spot inside you.
At this point you couldn't even kiss him, head thrown back at the pleasure and hips grinding to follow his movements.
Just when you thought things couldn't feel better, he added another finger without warning, making you gasp loudly as he scissored his fingers to stretch your soaking cunt.
''Ukai''you managed to say ''Oh god''
Concentrated on you, he just listened to your sweet and lewd sounds, leaving marks on every piece of skin his lips could find.
Tears pooled in your eyes, the pleasure being too much for you to handle, one hand gripping Ukai's arm for leverage when you finally unleashed with a big, breathy moan, almost a scream.
''Fuck''breathless, you spoke, feeling his hand slip out of you.
''You did so good for me''he said, stroking your cheek with a passionate kiss.
This moment as you came down from your high, your heart swelled up, because he was being so sweet, loving almost, clearly giving you time to recover and breathe before moving any further.
For a bit, Ukai just kissed your face and your lips gently, touching your body in more of a caring way.
''You wanna keep going?''he asked, not pushy but relaxed, the dominance in his voice now gone.
''Ukai''you said, propping yourself up enough to tangle your hands behid his neck and pull his face closer until his ear was next to your lips, close enough to whisper ''I want you to fuck me, hard''
This time, you were the one smiling playfully when his face turned all red and desperate, welcoming the furious slam of his lips against yours. It was inevitable, you lit a fire in him and he still took his sweet time kissing and touching you all over until he couldn't take it anymore and guided his member with your entrance, bottoming out in a sharp thrust that took every bit of air out of your lungs.
It definitely felt better than his fingers, and that's saying a lot.
Ukai wasted no time and with a low moan, he held your hips and moved fast inside you.
''You feel so good, fuck''he said, squeezing hard where he had his hands and desperately searching for your lips.
Hardly, you kissed him, back arching at the pressure and feeling of him inside you, reminiscing every time you had touched yourself thinking of this very moment, even more turned on now that the fantasy was way better than you imagined.
Ukai was good, rough just how you liked it, extremely good at finding the places that drove you both crazy.
Soon after you were clamping down on him, earning more of those deep moans you loved so much.
''Fuck, pretty, I´m going to cum''he warned, movements getting sloppy.
''Cum inside me'' you pleaded.
''You sure?''
''Please''
That's all he needed to hear, and in the blink of an eye, he bottomed out one last time to release his warm load inside your walls, hazily slipping out after.
Between shaky breaths and the sweaty mess you both were, you could feel his cum dripping out of you and onto the table to wich he gave a lazy smile.
''You look so pretty like this''he chuckled, setting himself between your legs again, hands lovingly on your waist.
''Well''you laughed, heart almost exploding at the sight of him all fucked out and also very pretty ''You look like a mess''joking, you fixed his hairband.
''All because of you''
''Mhm, if you say so''
''We should go out together''he said, leaving small kisses all over your face.
''Should've asked me out before this, I think you skipped a step''
''Are you rejecting me?''Ukai laughed.
''I can't reject my boss, wouldn't want to get fired''
''Not in a million years, baby, you could punch me and I still wouldn't fire your fine ass''

i think hinata is like the typical 'not special but still special' shojo harem protagonist but make it volleyball. all setters are wrapped around his tiny finger like the girls in the harem, to varying degrees, of course.

TEXT ME: SHOYO x Y/N (part 2)
series
(cw: food/eating, fluff, shojo vibes)
(a/n: text conversation romance i swore i’d never write you)
words: 1.3k
****
so when are you coming to visit??
Shoyo texts with exclamation points and emojis. His enthusiasm for life shines through every sunny character.
You do your best to keep up.
this weekend?
Shoyo responds with a smiley face and the double exclamation points.
we should get ramen! 🍜
You’d met Shoyo at the practice match between Karasuno and Nekoma in Tokyo. Shoyo had stuck out to you as shiny, athletic, and sunny. His fiery orange hair and his scrawny-yet-sculpted physique, his brown eyes and intense stare…he’d caught your eye.
You’d become fast friends over text.
Seems like he’s most passionate about volleyball, spending most of his time either practicing or wishing he was practicing.
tonkotsu is my favorite
You lie back on your bed, phone held over your face.
🍜😺🍲💯‼️
You smile, and send back your own line of emojis. He’s sweet, and fun to talk to. He’s never boring.
You lick your lips.
so, do u have a gf?
(…)
You watch the ellipses appear and bounce as Shoyo types.
nooo
Sighing, you type in relief:
sweet! then it’s a date ;)
Shoyo types and stops. Retypes. Stops. You’re hypnotized by the text on your screen.
🫣😳‼️
And then,
okay!!!
You smirk.
bring flowers
🌺🌷💐🌼
You chew your lip, staring at your phone. You want to ask him more, pry him open, see what makes him tick. So you decide to press:
have you ever had a gf?
no, wbu?
ive had some boyfriends but nothing that lasted more than a month
You roll over onto your stomach, chin propped up on a pillow. Your ballet slippers phone charm clicks against the case. You toy with it, idling.
sorry about that but also im not sorry. since i wanna go on a date w u
Smiling, you hide your face in your pillow. It smells like lavender.
same
You have homework waiting on your desk, but that’s what morning bus rides are for.
what’s ur fav thing in the whole wide world?
Hinata asks such earnest things.
umm…ballet, i think
He responds quickly:
why??
You sigh, and think of how to answer. Your room’s fan spins lazily overhead. You kick your feet as you type.
it’s perfect. the shapes, the movements, it’s all so beautiful. plus it’s exercise and makes my body feel so good after and i really like pointe
You take a deep breath, sending the run-on sentences without editing.
it’s like music or poetry, but in my body. pointe feels especially challenging, but i like it 🩰
Shoyo types.
i like challenges too
****
Saturday comes after even more text conversations. You’d spent the week glued to your phone. Each text sends butterflies through you.
You’d learned about his little sister, his parents, the foods his family cooks (salmon and pork buns are his favorite).
In turn, he’d spoken with you about Kenma, your family’s pet cat, and your somewhat distant parents.
You’re standing in front of the ramen place you’d both decided on. You muse on what other questions you’d like to ask—favorite colors, animals, subjects in school—when the orange-haired boy himself bikes up beside you. He’s electric.
“Hiya,” you say, hands clasped behind your back. Shyness suddenly overtakes you, as he smiles and steps forward.
“Hey!” He locks his bike, and then fishes something out of the basket.
Sunflowers.
“Oh!” You say, delicately accepting the bouquet, “Oh my gosh…”
Shoyo scratches the back of his head. “Hope you like sun—“
He’s interrupted by a quick, tight hug from you. Your arms wrap around his thin, wiry frame, as you bury your face in his shoulder. He smells like the sunflowers in your hand.
“I love them.”
You speak and then quickly step backward. Shoyo’s face is flushed a deep red, and judging by the heat searing your cheeks, your blush is just as bad. Smiling, you tuck a stray lock of hair behind an ear. “Sorry, I uh…didn’t actually expect flowers.”
He bustles up, cheeks puffed, “But you said to bring them!!”
“I know, I know,” you smile, “It makes me happy you did.” You bury your face in the flowers and inhale.
They smell like spring.
****
“Let’s eat!”
Shoyo exclaims before digging into his bowl of ramen. Your own steaming bowl sits in front of you: pork and scallions and hard-boiled eggs. Mmm…
“This is so good!” Shoyo picks his bowl up to sip the broth, “Like, really good!”
You smile, slurping up noodles with a hum. “Ramen was a good idea.”
“Mhmm!!!”
You sit and eat for a moment. It’s an easy silence. Shoyo is someone who you don’t have to feel awkward around. His expressions are honest, and he always says whatever he’s thinking.
“So…,” you start, toying with your chopsticks, “What’s so great about volleyball?”
Shoyo lights up.
“It’s the best!! You get to run around and play on a team, and your friends are all there supporting you!” He pauses to wipe broth off his face with the back of his hand. He’s excited and flushed, eyes wide and shining.
You sigh, picking at noodles. “I wish ballet was more of a team sport. It’s really beautiful, dancing with friends, but it’s not like a team or anything. No one’s gonna support me in a pirouette,” you say, scratching the back of your head.
Shoyo cocks his head.
Wow,
His stare is intense.
“Why don’t you play a team sport?”
You shrug.
“Ballet takes most of my energy, aside from schoolwork.” You bite your lip, “Besides, I’m already so in love with ballet. I can’t ever imagine stopping dancing. It makes me too happy. Even when my hips hurt and my toes sting, it doesn’t matter,” you lift your chin to meet Shoyo’s amber eyes, “Because it means I got to dance ballet.”
Shoyo stares.
And then his face cracks into the biggest grin you’ve ever seen.
“That’s why I love volleyball!!”
You both smile and laugh, happy to have found such a common thread.
Shoyo slurps up the last of his pork broth. “When do you have your next game—or uh, performance?” He smiles sheepishly. “I dunno all the lingo, hah…”
He’s cute when he’s shy.
“Recital,” you say for him, “And the next one is in three months! I have a solo part…,” you say nervously. Shoyo lights up, chopsticks in hand and broth on his chin.
“Solo!? That sounds super cool!”
You nod, sheepish. “It’s the Rose Fairy from The Nutcracker! I come out in the Waltz of the Flowers, and I get to do a bunch of spinny stuff with the male dancers,” You chew your lip, “I guess it is sort of a team sport, doing partner work like that,” You tap your chin, “Since they technically are helping me with pirouettes!”
Shoyo falters for a moment, lips pursed. “What’s this about male dancers?” His cheeks are flushed.
You smile,
you can’t help it.
“Here,” you say, and show a YouTube video of the waltz. His expression only darkens. He watches the men help the Rose Fairy spin across the stage—each man helping her with an impressive move. “My favorite is this promenade,” you point out.
Hinata frowns.
“All these…guys are gonna be touching you?” He asks with a pout.
You snicker.
“Jealous?”
Hinata nods fiercely.
“Yes!”
You burst out laughing. “None of these dudes are interested in me,” you assure him, “It’s just part of the dance.”
He still doesn’t look pleased.
“Of course they might be interested in you! You’re the prettiest girl in the world!”
You smile behind your hand. Even so, your face is burning hot from his complement. He sits up with his arms crossed. “I wanna be the one to help you peer-oh-wet!” He sounds out the French. (It’s so cute, you could die.)
“Well…,” you drum your fingertips on the table, “I usually rent the studio for an hour each week to rehearse on my own. If you want, you could join me! I’ll teach you,” you say. Shoyo immediately brightens.
“Mkay!”

The smile he craved to protect
Autor's note: This is my fic written for the SS Shojo Week 2023! :) One of the first I've ever written in English, hence please, bear in mind some mistakes might occur.
Word count: 2536 Prompt: Highschool
Enjoy! :)
Casting his mind back to that day… To the memory of that day, which could never leave his head… What was the first thing coming to his thoughts, whenever he was relieving it again?
Was it the shiver going down his spine, leaving that intense, pulsing feeling of uncertainty within him? Was it the rain flooding the nearby streets, drenching his clothes, making him defenceless towards the nature and its rights? Or maybe its droplets… flowing down his cheeks, undistinguishable from tears relentlessly wanting to indulge that heart-wrenching sadness he could not get over.
On that day, Sasuke understood that he, indeed, was defenceless. Towards the nature, towards the cycle of life, towards its cruelty and endlessness. That harsh loop that everyone has to live in. Standing in the rain, with the faraway look on his face, he was coming to a painful realisation. He could do nothing against it. He could never stop Death from taking him away.
Why then, a part of that day, that pitiful memory, wasn’t leaving his head? Why would he keep sentencing himself to go through it over, and over again, instead of forcing own self to simply forget?
Sasuke wasn’t sure. Yet among all those mixed emotions that kept descending on him every day, he could recognise something else, something that he wouldn’t erase from his memory. Something he wouldn’t want to banish.
That smile, that managed to save him at the last gasp. As if she was an angel sent from above to get him out of his gripping despair, the girl in front of him unwittingly melted the ice covering his heart. He could see it even now. Those emerald eyes fixed at him, the worried look she was giving him. White umbrella stopping the rain teeming down on his head, and just the sweet voice of hers asking:
        Is everything alright?
No. He was far from being alright. But she was a wake-up call he subconsciously craved. Her kindness filled his heart with warmth he had lost a few hours before. Warmth, he chose to never give up on again.
***
Strolling down the corridors of the Konoha Highschool Sasuke couldn’t chase the cloudiness of his mind away. It felt as if the weather forecast predicted only dense fog for the day and the storm coming for the night. Dark clouds kept following him since the funeral, and three months had already passed. Even though he could feel the sunrays brush his skin, it helped nothing to dispel the darkness swirling above his head. He was hearing his friend’s voice, yet could not comprehend a single word flowing out of his mouth. And to Naruto’s annoyance, the absence of his mind was more than obvious with that blank stare of his.
“You could at least try listening to me, you know”, the boy snapped in a snit, but seeing Sasuke didn’t utter a word, he sighed heavily. He knew he was having a truly horrible time, yet for the first time Naruto had no idea as to how he could help him.
As they reached the classroom, Uchiha took his regular spot at its end, while Naruto approached a group of other students discussing something keenly.
“What’s up!” With a wide smile on his face he gave Kiba and Hinata a clap on their backs, making the girl give a start with a small shriek. “Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to scare you, you know! What are you talking ‘bout?”
“It’s okay…”, she muttered shyly, while Kiba started giving an explanation.
“… And that’s when I swooped in! I don’t really know her, but the Gentleman’s Code doesn’t allow to leave a damsel in distress without a hand. So I caught her, and helped her get back on her feet! Of course, she was grateful, and damn! Those goo-goo eyes!”
Uzumaki caught his breath for a split second before he burst into laughter. Trying hard to calm his giggles, he threw his arm around Hinata’s shoulder, making her face redder than a tomato.
“S-Sorry… I can’t…”, he kept roaring for a little longer until he was able to articulate. “Goo-goo eyes just because you caught her?”
“You may not be aware of it, but all them ladies love a strong guy giving them a leg up!”
“And you’re supposedly that strong guy?”, Naruto raised his eyebrow, biting the corner of his lips so that he could stop the smile creeping onto his face back again.
“What’s with that snide remark? You’re just jealous that you make no chicks swoon, unlike me.”
A grunt carried inthe room made everyone’s eyes traverse to its causer, namely, Shino, who was standing along with the discussing students.
“Firstly, you didn’t catch her, she bumped into you. That is because you were standing next to the stairs. Secondly, she didn’t even fall herself, but because she was pushed by someone. You don’t make any girls swoon either, because you are not popular at all”, Shino elaborated in a serious tone of voice, making Naruto laugh again, while Kiba was getting heated up.
“Anyway!” Uzumaki decided to interrupt him before he even got to say a word. “Who was that girl?”
“Not sure, don’t know her” Inuzuka pouted, dropping his eyes. “But I will sure find out!”
“I… I do know her”, Hinata finally spoke up, and everyone’s gaze moved to her, as she was about to give them the answer. “I had class with her last year… Her name is Sakura.”
His classmate rouse him from reverie. That name, he wasn’t sure earlier. He could recall her from assemblies, yet there was a blank space in his head as he was trying to remember what she was called. Sasuke had no idea what his friends were talking about, but there was one thing his gut was telling him for sure. Sakura, that must have been that girl.
***
Next weeks have passed mostly in the same way as the previous ones. School was keeping him busy, but it was still not enough to drive his sadness away. Although he was trying to spend as much time as possible out of home that kept reminding him of his brother, it was impossible to stay away from it completely. And every time Sasuke had to face those thoughts filled with despair, he felt as if he was going to collapse any moment.
That’s why he was spending more time at Naruto’s place than his own. He couldn’t explain it, but with him around he was feeling that this overwhelming grief was easing off a little. Naruto and Itachi were always alike at some point, even if their personalities seemed completely opposite — Itachi always unfazed, Naruto bursting with energy for most of the time — they both were giving him the comfort he needed. And when he was getting weary of his friend’s gibberish, he would move to the library to study for the upcoming exams. At least, at the beginning that was the reason.
It was Friday when he decided to spend some time in the reading room of his high school. The room was spacious enough to let him enjoy the solitude he needed from time to time. That day though, he could not cast his thoughts aside when learning. They kept flooding his mind, and even if they weren’t leaving him teary-eyed anymore, he would say that the heavy weight on his heart was even worse than droplets flowing down his face.
He couldn’t think straight with pulsating pain in his head. Having buried his face in his hands, he exhaled deeply. He couldn’t do it anymore. Everyone kept telling him that this wound that was caused by the loss of his brother, the one he was keeping within himself would heal over time. But he didn’t believe them. And even if it ever healed, a deep, ugly scar would be left as a sign of this dark time. Usually he would shrug it off, trying to crack on with the school-life, putting his worries on ice. But today was different.
And as he put his arms down and rose his eyes, he again saw her. She was sitting at the table nearby, holding a pencil in her fingers as she was reading something dialling in. He didn’t know how long he was gazing at her. But eventually, he realised. The pain was gone.
Since then Sasuke would go to the library more often, hoping to meet her again. Although, maybe “meet” was a too strong word to use. Maybe it would be better if he said that he simply wanted to encounter her. He never said “hi”, never approached her. But every single time he came across her, he couldn’t help but fix on her, hoping that she never notices.
To be frank, at school it was no different. When wandering aimlessly around the corridors along with Naruto during their breaks, he would be looking out for her with different outcomes. After a while he learned that she spends most of her breaks outside, sitting on a bench under a tree. He also noticed that she was a nerd in the true sense of the word. Sasuke could swear she was studying for most of the time, except for the moments when her blonde friend decided to join her in on the bench. Then, they would chat about something, and he would even sometimes spot a slight smile on her face that made him smirk at multiple occasions.
No matter how clueless Naruto’s usual self was, this couldn’t escape even his notice. At first he didn’t connect the dots, that Sasuke was peculiarly eager to stroll down the school, when just a few months ago he would never go with him without complaining. But after some time, he noticed his friend’s eyes fixed on that girl.
“You didn’t tell me there was someone you like”, he blundered out, giving a glance to her.
“What?” Sasuke asked, thrown off-balance. He immediately moved his gaze at him with the questioning look on his face.
“You always look at her. Are you seeing each other?”
Uchiha snorted awkwardly, averting his eyes. He put his hands back to the pockets of his trousers.
        “Don’t be ridiculous.”
***
Heavy rain. That’s how she could sum up the weather as she was on her way to the bus. Annoyingly enough, today, when it was bucketing for hours now, she had forgotten her umbrella. And that never happens to her.
She could feel all her clothes water-soaked, not mentioning pink hair that looked as if she just got out of the shower.
“Splendid”, she thought to herself, stopping before a pedestrian crossing. Sakura could already feel the runny nose she was going to struggle with in the following days. Had she a hood, maybe she would be in at least a little better situation. But not today. White t-shirt of her uniform and a cardigan wrapped tight around her kept reminding her of what a terrible idea it was to not check the bag before leaving.
And then, to her surprise, she could see a shadow casted from above of her head, stopping the rain that was relentlessly teeming down on her. She rose her eyes to see a boy from her school that would make her heart skip a beat every time she saw him. Sasuke Uchiha. There was no girl at school that wouldn’t know his name. And now, he was standing next to her, covering them both from the water with a black umbrella.
“Oh… It’s you”, she mumbled, but as she realised how bad it sounded, she composed herself immediately, giving him a smile. Her heart was in a rush, when she was trying to say anything else. “I meant… it’s nice of you. Thank you.”
        “Hn.”
Taken aback by his response (if she even could call it an answer), she dropped her gaze. As the lights turned green, they started walking forward towards the bus stop.
“I think I saw you in the library the other day”, she said, trying to fill the awkward silence.
“I come there from time to time.”
“Oh… I understand”, Sakura nodded a bit discouraged, figuring that he was either far from a chatty person, or just uninterested in speaking with her.
While Sakura was puzzling over Sasuke and his personality, trying to find out how to approach him, Uchiha was cursing himself inwardly. Ever since he saw her on that crossing, he knew he didn’t want to let her soak with rain. What he didn’t know though, was what would he say as he approaches her. And when he finally did, without giving it much of a thought, he must have made a jerk of himself with those brief replies.
Typically, Sasuke’s mind was nimble. But when around that girl, something clearly wasn’t working, as if the nerve connections in his brain were obliterating within a crack. Astound, he had no idea how to say. But he needed to say something quick.
“You’re there surprisingly often. You seem to study a lot”, he managed to finally speak up, hoping he doesn’t come across as nosy.
“I actually do!”, she warmed up hearing his words. “Library is the best place for it, really. It’s silent, and other people doing their work boost my morale”.
Sasuke could hear her chuckle, and he couldn’t help but rise the corners of his lips either. They were chatting a little before reaching the bus stop — although being completely honest, it was mostly Sakura that was talking. And he didn’t mind. He enjoyed every word she said, wanting to hear more and more, hating how near to their school the bus stop was. But since then, they’d often walk there together whenever their school-day was finishing at the same time.
A few weeks after they started their new habit accompanying each other on their way home, Sasuke couldn’t get rid of the feeling that something was off with Sakura. While she usually was almost as energetic as Naruto was, she suddenly went completely silent. He even asked if everything was fine, but he never received any other answer than “no worries”, with a smile that he could tell was fake.
Wednesdays were the days when they’d both finish around 4 pm. However, earlier that they he couldn’t find her anywhere at school. Having waited for her over a quarter, he realised she must have been absent.
Sasuke couldn’t help but feel worried. He had already learned Sakura was never skipping school. Normally he would have assumed that maybe she was just sick, but with her weird behaviour past few days, he couldn’t force himself to believe it.
And so, he didn’t get off the bus at the stop nearby his house. Instead, he decided to check on her in person. He had walked her home once, hence he hoped he didn’t forget the way there. And to his gladness, after a few minutes he was standing in front of the building she lived in. When he was about to call her through the intercom, he stopped for a minute, having a rethink. He was feeling silly for coming to her house without giving her a notice. But he had this hunch, telling him he needs to be there.
When he finally called, a female voice answered him, yet it wasn’t the girl he was craving to hear from.
“I’m sorry for the obtrusion… I wanted to ask, if Sakura is home?”, he gulped, uncertain what words to use.
“And you are?”. He could feel the suspicious tone in the woman’s voice.
        “A friend. Uchiha Sasuke.”
“Sasuke? Of course, come in.” The boy already figured that the lady he was speaking to must have been Sakura’s mom. Hearing her voice become more cheerful as he introduced himself, he smiled a little.
The flat he saw was sure cosy, just like he imagined the place of Harunos. What though didn’t meet his expectations was Sakura’s mom. For some reason he was sure that she must be taking after her, but having spotted the pictures on the walls as she was leading him to the girl’s room, his friend resembled her father much more.
“Sakura, you have a guest.” Mrs Haruno knocked on the door, and walked away, upon hearing “come in” from her daughter. She only shoot at Sasuke once again, giving him a smile.
He pressed the handle, feeling the anxiety boiling up in his chest. He was now wondering, whether she is going to be mad at him for coming here. But there was no way out, not anymore. He went in.
“Hey”, he tried to keep his composure, but he could feel his jaw drop a little, when he noticed her hair, or rather its shoulder-length. She still was pretty, that he knew for sure, but it didn’t change the fact that it wasn’t the way he remembered it to be. Just a few days ago, it was way longer.
“Sasuke? Why did you come?” Sakura stood up from her bed, glancing at him surprised.
“You didn’t show up at school. Thought I’d check on you”, he explained, exchanging looks with her. “You cut your hair.”
Sakura sighed, shaking her head. She showed him a chair he could sit on, and took a place on her bed again, crossing her arms. He could notice them shaking a little.
“How are you?”, she asked, ignoring his comment.
         “I’m good. How are you?”
“Good”, Sakura answered biting her lips.
Young man exhaled, rubbing his eyes. He knew it was a lie. He might have had no idea what was going on with her, but something was off all this time. And he wasn’t leaving until he finds out.
“What’s going on?”. Sakura was surprised to hear this gentle tone of his voice for the first time ever. And that’s probably why she couldn’t keep it to herself anymore.
“I’m having some issues at school”, she started, speaking — to the boy’s mind — in riddles. However, he had the patience and the time to continue. No matter how long it would take, he was ready to listen to Sakura and let the heavy weight off her shoulders as she finally says what the problem is. Sasuke kept his eyes fixed on her as he asked another question.
         “And those are?”
She sighed again, wondering how to put it. Saying it outright felt rather awkward. It was enough that she had to tell her parents yesterday, what happened to her after the class. And the encounter she had with Ami and her bunch — the girls that would harass her at school for a while now, was something she wished to erase from her memory. However, Sakura was aware it was impossible. She would sooner or later have to go back to school. And now, looking at Sasuke, she started to have a little faith. That she isn’t alone. That it isn’t just Ino — her best friend — that would take her side and stand up for her.
She still was unable to figure out what was going on between her and Uchiha. It was simply weird to her. Were they close friends, she didn’t know. For a little while she noticed that she cannot think straight when around him. She would blush, feeling her body on heat, every time their skin meets. Ino diagnosed her some time ago with symptoms common for the girls at school. Symptoms of crush on Sasuke Uchiha. And as much as Sakura considered this to be one-sided, she genuinely believed that he cared for her.
“Problems with a few girls. This…”, having said that, she took a lock of her hair between her fingers “is their doing.”
While she was hoping to see a quick reaction, nothing happened. Sasuke was analysing what she said, and then everything dawned on him, making him wonder how he could not notice anything earlier. He wasn’t sure if he was more angry at those girls, or at his own self, that he was no help to her when she apparently needed him to be. This though, was going to change. From now. That gave him the courage to take matters into his hands. He was going to deal with anyone causing her harm. But firs, he needed to speak with her.
        “Sakura.”
        “Yes?”
“I’m not good at comforting people”, he admitted calmly.
Sakura though, didn’t seem to be bothered. She unwillingly chortled, hearing his words. Even if she was feeling uncomfortable telling him this, he managed to cheer her up a little with this sentence, making her heart go faster.
“But it doesn’t mean I don’t want to help you. I won’t leave you. You can count on me. What I wanted to say…”, not having yet finished speaking, Sasuke stood up and started walking to the door, making her catch her breath. “Let’s date.”
Before leaving the room, he could see first amazement on her face. She certainly didn’t see it coming, forgetting how to breathe for a minute. But then, that expression was then replaced with what he liked the most about her. Her smile was filling his heart with this warm feeling he could not forget from that memorable day. That was the only thing he craved to see. That smile and those overjoyed, emerald eyes. And that’s why Sasuke decided to shoulder the responsibility. To protect them, no matter what.

Okay, so I got some stuff to get off my chest cause lately I’ve seen a lot of people saying Sakura deserves more praise and people hate on her for no reason. And this is both true and false, coming from a person with a love and hate relationship for her character.
Now don’t get me wrong, Sakura got some pros like she one of the strongest female characters currently in Boruto. Hinata don’t count cause despite her background, she wasn’t really a fighter. She’s a great healer and she can throw some hands!
But she got a whole lot of cons as well. Like her relationship with Sasuke that Kishimoto wrote poorly! Now I know a lot people, especially SS fans, would argue. Naruto did the same! But the way he reacted was different. Sakura would rather destroy the world and in return watch Sasuke destroy himself if she left with him on his quest for vengeance.
Naruto put in all the work! Not Sakura SS fans, and Sakura got the leftovers! Honestly for her character to be about love, it messed her up. Because to me SS don’t have a true relationship. Just because the author wrote it, doesn’t make them soulmates.
Look at all those shojo isekai novels, where the character reincarnated in the story and got with main lead, despite what the author wrote!
They are not people who can stand on equal ground, cause Sakura will always bend over for whatever Sasuke says and not argue with him. Her love is not mature, cause to me she will always be stupid 12 year-old blinded by love.
Now before some of y’all point fingers and try to say, all girls who ship mxm are the same and hate the female love interests. That is not true. I love Ochako from My Hero and Emma from Tokyo Revengers. I also got no problem with Rin from Inuyasha!
There is a long list of female characters I like. Most of them come from One Piece. Ezra from Fairytail. When I was watching AoT, Mikasa! And one of my current faves Nobara from JJK! Orihime and Rukia from Bleach, despite me being on the RukiaIchi ship boat. I’ll accept Rukia and Ichigo ‘brother and sister’ argument than SNS BS one!

And if on the one hand we have the confrontation with Sasuke and Minato on the other we find Hinata equal to Kushina obviously... then romantic moment MK with NaruHina kiss on the moon (a stupid shojo movie by SP to justify their development like a couple in a terrible way) ... unfortunately the countermove of NH was to be expected... I swear, I laugh so as not to cry 💀💀💀🐐🐐🙄🙄
