„Hey darling, what are you up to this morning?”, your beloved husband mutters against your ear.

Shivers of comfort run down your spine immediately, you can’t help but embrace the love of your life with your arms wide open. Words can’t express how much you love Satoru Gojo, the man who stole your heart a long time ago and is now your husband. To this day you can’t put a finger on why he chose you. You, a calm and collected woman. You, who always keeps a cool head in every situation. You, who many people like Nanami describe as the complete opposite of him. But somehow you make it work. And god, how good it feels to wake up in his arms and greet him at Jujutsu High all over again.

“Oh, I was actually looking for my students. I haven’t seen any of them this morning, even though Maki usually goes for a run around this time”, you reply, face scrunched up in confusion.

You always cared for your students as if they were your own kids and Satoru can’t help but love you even more for it. The way you seem to know every minor detail about them, how you treat every single one with so much care while still teaching them hand to hand combat like none other, how they look up to you. It’s not a secret to anyone at Jujutsu High that your students love you just as much as you love them – even Megumi can’t escape a small smile as soon as you enter the room.

Knowing that, Satoru needs to swallow hard. Oh, you will totally go crazy if you hear where they are…Should he even tell you? Wouldn’t it be fun to let the elders deal with you? He knows how much you can change from your calm and collected self into a maniac if it comes to your precious students.

“Well, about that…”, he mumbles, scratching the back of his head just like Megumi does when he’s uncomfortable.

Your eyes dart towards him immediately, arms crossed in front of your chest. The face your husband makes doesn’t mean anything good, that’s for sure. Just a few days ago you talked for hours with the director and the elders about a potential mission for your first and seconds years. It would have been today if you aren’t mistaken. And all of them aren’t around…Your hands clench into fists, gaze piercing through him without any mercy.

“The elders decided on carrying out the mission despite your disapproval. Out students are on the way to where the special grade was last seen.”

“Is that so, huh.”

Your eyes darken in an instant, your cute and feminine features change so drastically that Satoru himself has to blink a few times. That causes trouble. And he’s totally here for it.

“Thank you for telling me, love. I will go and have a little talk with them.”

With a last soft kiss on his cheek you move towards the main building, towards the disgusting people who risk the lives of their students like there’s no tomorrow. Anger rises up inside your veins and almost takes your sight. You explained them over and over that a special grade curse along with who knows how much other strong curses is too much for only students to handle. Especially after they had to work so much lately, after they’ve been through hell and back, they aren’t capable of doing that alone. But instead of sending your husband and yourself like you suggested, they simply ignored your advice and sent them away without letting you know.

Enough of being kind and collected. You’ll show them a side of you they haven’t seen yet.

“What are you doing here, Gojo?”, Yaga Masamichi questions when catching a glimpse of you.

His heart stops for the split of a second. The way your stone-cold eyes dart towards him, your fists hanging unpromising down your body, your straight and confident walk…

No, he has never seen you like this. What happened that made you this mad?

“Are you responsible for the first and seconds years going on that suicide mission?”

While your voice does sound as collected as usual, the look on your face and how you position yourself in front of him tell otherwise. Of course, he is aware of the fact that you care about your students as if they’re your own children, but still…

“Me along with the elders. And as a teacher of Jujutsu High you are advised to accept that decision”, he replies without thinking twice.

You nod briefly, taking in his disrespectful words. Throughout all this time you taught here at Jujutsu High, you never lost your temper once, not even on the battlefield. You were always able to keep yourself together, no matter how rough the situation was. But this, the fact that they play with the lives of your beloved students like with dolls truly tests your patience to the brink.

“Follow me to meet them.”

You know exactly where does old farts are. Sitting on their asses in the room on the end of the hallway, drinking tea while deciding on the lives of others.

“Wait, you can’t just stomp in there”, the director shouts after you.

But you couldn’t care less. With a swift motion you swing the door open, exposing them sitting down just like you imagined.

“Satoru Gojo’s wife? What are you doing here? We didn’t ask you to come”, one of them barks at you.

“You all are aware of the fact that I could kill every single one of you without even blinking, right?”

Deadly silence hangs in the air, all pairs of eyes set on you in utter disbelief.

“(y/n)”, Yaga Masamichi breathes out behind you, the words that just left your mouth being so unusual for you.

What happened to the sweetheart of woman you are, the gentle smile that’s always plastered on your face, your calm and collected character of gold?

“And still, you foolishly decided on sending my students away. Into their certain death”, you continue.

It takes all of your strength to not lunge yourself at them. Who do they think they are to play with your student’s life like that? Aren’t they aware of the psychical damage that was done to Yuji when he fought against that special grade along with Nanami only a few days ago, when Nobara and Megumi almost lost their lives if it wasn’t for Shoko?

“I know how much you care about your students, but this is-“

“Shut up”, you hiss through gritted teeth at the man standing in the door.

“You will call my husband here and tell him to support my students within this difficult task. You will send both of us after them to make sure that no one gets hurt because all of them have been through enough horror the last weeks.”

“And what if we don’t? You are nothing but a teacher, no matter how strong you are and who your husband is”, the oldest of them interrupts you rudely.

The clicking of your heels against the ground runs shivers down their spine while you elegantly make your way towards the man with long white hair who spoke to you so foolishly. Before anyone in the room is able to react, you grab his throat and yank him upwards, head meeting the cold wall behind him.

“Then you will experience yourself why I’m called the snake sorceress. Do you know about the deadliest snake in the world? The inland taipan can send up to 230 humans 6 feet underground with a single bite. Be aware of the fact that I am able to wipe out this whole room without even blinking. Don’t ignore me when it comes to my students ever again or I’ll show you than I’m capable of more than smiling gently.”

You let go of him roughly, wiping your hands on your uniform.

“I expect your call within the next 5 minutes. And please inform my husband about your decision as well”, you announce into the room with your usual calm voice.

Without sending them a single look, you leave the room and building behind, humming to yourself while holding your face into the sun. Yes, that definitely felt good. Maybe that was enough to make them learn their lesson. You might be gentle, but you aren’t a special grade sorcerer out of nowhere.

“Look who’s there, the woman who just threatened the higher ups of Jujutsu High all on her own. Did you really choke that man?”

Your husband grins at you widely, his blindfold already taken off. You simply shrug your shoulders and smile at him.

“Apparently I was able to convince them somehow. Come on, we should get going. I hope all of them are alright…”

“With a mum like you, they’ll definitely be.”

Your head darts towards your husband warningly, hands holding onto his shoulders.

“Don’t say it like that, I’m their teacher”, you clarify.

“And you care about them as if they were your own kids.”

“Well, someone has to do this, right?”, you reply with a cheeky smile before rushing to aid your students.

Hopefully they’ll never forget the lesson you taught them today.

What would the bg3 companions do if Tav fixed a home-made meal and cleaned up their stuff for them, studio ghibli style?

I had to take quite a bit of time to think on this one because it would vary wildly depending on /when/ this happened. So, I am re-using my favorite scenario that was widely popularized over 20 years ago by the Gundam Wing fandom for fanfiction purposes, and we are going to say:

"The companions find a safe house where they must hole-up for several weeks before a major confrontation/continuing their journey. It provides a needed opportunity for respite and recovery, a moment to breathe in the eye of the storm." timeline: late Act 3

Tav prepares a home-made meal that takes them the entire day to make. Grilled fish fresh from the river, bread from scratch with herbs from the garden folded into it and butter spread across the top. Potatoes from the garden sliced, seasoned, roasted. Chicken caught and killed that very morning and boiled into a stew with pounds of fresh vegetables - and more. Yams, parsnips, salad greens, All they could find in the cellar, in the surrounding abandoned garden and small farmstead they had settled in. The type of meal that filled a table so thoroughly there was almost no place left to sit if one tried to have their meal at the table.

It had been so long since they had a home to care for, and this journey had given precious little time for such things as careful cleaning and cooking. The little cottage was full of delicious smells, a warm fire burned in the hearth and heated the entire space. The companions, who had all been out for the day on various missions, arrived back to find not only this, but more.

All of the clothes laundered, scented with lavender from the garden. All of their armor polished and scrubbed, weapons cleaned, packs tidied. Rooms swept of cobwebs, bedding replaced. Perhaps a little bit of magic had been used, for everything was dry as well as clean. How would they respond?

Gale: Warmth and joy. He breaks out into a huge smile and fills the room with compliments on everything youve done. A stickler for detail and known for his verbosity, he leaves out no single comment nor does he miss the chance to reflect on what each detail reminds him of - his mothers cooking, his home, the soul-brightening joy of fresh bedding pulled tightly over a clean mattress. He would do all of the clean up after dinner, showing his appreciation not only in words but affirming them with his actions as well.

Karlach: She gets choked up. Honestly. "you didnt have to" isnt on her mind at all, shes just incredibly grateful. You get the biggest bear hug and a shuddering voice of gratitude in your ear. It hasnt been just 'so long' since shes had this level of care- she never has. Nothing like this. She will remember this for the rest of her life, no matter how long or short that life may be. You gave her something that healed a part of her permanently.

Wyll: Flushed and flustered. HE would be heavy on the "you shouldnt have- I would have helped! had you only asked-" Embarassed almost, in the way that he responds, as if he feels bad that he hadnt been able to pre-empt this scenario and find a way of doing it for you first. He feels... guilty. Tries to hide it with gratitude. Is a little quieter than usual.

Lae'zel: Asks what you expect in exchange for services rendered. Makes a quip about you being suited for running an inn as much as you are for battle. Clears her plate, then another. Goes a little quiet for a moment. Then: "You didnt need to. A waste of your time to cater to us thusly. (long pause) .... thank you."

Shadowheart: Questions why, wonders if youve done it to soften the blow of some oncoming bad news. Spends most of her time teasing the other companions for their reactions but in a way where its clear that shes guiding them towards more grateful responses. She smiles at you warmly and softly across the table, eyes twinkling. Her gentle teasing of you is filled with subtle offers of repaying the kindness in ways that you will not be able to expect or predict later on so that she may surprise you in kind. Also, to ensure you cannot reject her because you dont know whats coming or when.

Halsin: Very clearly thanks you with direct eye contact. If your relationship is good, he holds both your hands in his and gives them a firm but caring squeeze. All of his feelings are in his eyes and his words are exceptionally heartfelt and to the point. He has no issues with being appreciative or straightforward, and this meant a lot to him. Offers to run your bath for you later, since Gale is doing the dishes. Probably offers to wash your hair. Comes on to you a bit, he cant help it. Heart eyes 1000%

Astarion: Awkward. Uncomfortable. Initially tries to play it off with pomp and flourish, goes to hint that you just wanted to rifle through everyones things while no one was home. Does, actually, double check all of his belongings. You cant fault him for being who he is. Questions you with a deep frown, but waits to do so until he has you cornered in the back of the hallway where he waited for you to come out of the privy. You reassure him, and hes huffy about it. It takes a lot for him to go from accusational to deflated. Laments he cant enjoy the meal you prepared, only to be presented with a live hog in the store room and a bottle of red wine. You didnt forget. He stares, stutters out his gratitude. Does not apologize for grilling you. Body language towards you for the next few days has a distinct affectionate companionability to it. Small genuine smiles half hidden behind wine glasses.

Heartbeat comfort

[Jason Todd x Fem!Reader]

Late-night ideas and some ideas I had for an oc of mine but instead of boring you with those details. I create this instead.

Jason Todd isn't exactly the smartest guy around but he did notice things. He notices the little details about stuff. The stuff that matters. Like his current girlfriend. He notices very single details about her.

The way she parts her hair before heading to work, the way she cooks the food when they have a night together, the way she rolls her eyes when she annoyed with him.

But his favorite details about her are how she shows affection to him. Everything about it makes him feel so loved and treasured. Like he's the only one in the world. The only thing that matters. Just like how he feels about her.

As much as he loves the way she shows affection, there's one way that stick out the most to him.

Before going to bed, she wraps her arm around him and lay her head directly on his chest, right where his heart is, and goes to sleep. On an occasional morning, he wakes up to her doing that exact thing. Laying her head on his chest. Does it every morning and every night.

At first, he thought she just like his chest. He got to admit that he has an attractive body. He has seen people stare when he's at the gym.

But due to how long she had been doing it, he can't help but feel like it more than just simple attraction. It's almost like its is part of her daily routine. Her day can't start without doing that simple action.

Due to that feeling, he decided to confront her about it. Just when she came home from work, he greet her as usual, with a forehead kiss, and started the conversation.

"Hey doll." A giggle escapes her mouth, "hey handsome. You hungry for Chinese tonight? My friend recommended me this place on 65th street we can order from." She walks around him to put her coat down on the couch and heads to the bathroom. "I was actually thinking about cooking something," Jason says while following her around to hear her response.

"As much as I love your cooking, baby. We rarely get a night together so I want to spend it together as much as possible." "I'm just going to the kitchen " "you don't like me in the kitchen when you cook. You make me seat in the living room" "Yeah cause you eat the ingredients and boss me around. " she laughs at his answers and wraps her arm around his neck; He wrapped his arms around her waist in response. "I'm just helping." "You can help by seating still and look pretty " another laugh left her mouth as she leans closer to his face, "Well another reason I don't want you to cook is because I want your attention on me and me only tonight"

She kiss him after that sentence and a moan left his mouth. He pulls away because he getting sidetracked from his main goal. "Speaking of attention, there's something I wanted to ask you." Jason put his hands on her shoulders and rubs them up and down on her arms, a sign he comes in peace with his questions, "I've noticed that you kinda have this routine of laying on my chest." Her smile was slowly dropping the more he talks.

"I don't hate when you do it. I was just if there's a specific reason why you do it." His hands are still on her arms but not moving. They start to grip her as if she slip away. Her reaction to his question made him believe she was. Did he cross a line somewhere? Should he apologize? He should apologize

Before he could, she shyly respond. "It's a stupid thing. Nothing really." She push his hands off her and walks towards the kitchen, grabbinga takeout menu. "On second thought, how about we order pizza? I think we have a coupon for a free appetizer. "

Ah. Jason understands now. She doing a detail he dislikes. Avoiding the question. She does that when she not sure about her answer towards a question. Mainly when she think jason won't like the answer. Now he needs to know.

He follows behind her but everytime he gets close,she dodges him. "Babe?" "what pizza do you want? I'm thinking meat supreme." "Babe." "But you said you're watching your diet,right? How about veggies instead? " "Baby please-" "you know what? Forget pizza! Let's just get something from that place from down the street-" "Baby please! just stop!"

Jason grabbed her wrist when she tried to escape from him, "I know what you're doing. You think I won't like your answer so you trying to avoid it altogether. I promise I won't hate you or your answer, so just tell me okay? I can handle it."

He said that he can handle it but the next words out of her mouth did surprise alot.

"I'm listening to your heart beat. I'm making sure you're still alive."

"What?" Due to his shock, she able to get out of his hold and turn her full-body toward him, her face was pointing towards the ground though, "It's may sounds stupid to you but hearing your heart beat brings me comfort. Most nights I come home to a empty apartment and bed because you're out on patrol. Fighting and dealing with dangerous people every night. Other nights, I wake up to you coming home, bloody and broken, and I have to patch you up. So I worry about the fact that I...i..." tears start to brim in the bottom eyelids. Threatening to spill over but she keeps it in.

"That I might lose you. That you won't be the one climbing in the window, that It's your family, having to break the news to me. So to calm those thoughts, I listen to your heart as reassurance that you are still here with me." She lifted her hand to wipe the tears that escape her eyes but someone else did it for her. Jason, with a tender smile on his face.

"I know it's dumb to worry so much since I know what I sign up for but-" Jason interrupted with a kiss on her lips and leaning his forehead on hers. "No. No, it's not dumb. If anything it's appreciated. Knowing you care so much about me. I wish I could do more to ease your worries but I want you to know that nothing is going to take me away from you. I will do everything in my power to return to you safe and sound. So you can hear my heartbeat every time you need to."

Hopefully, it didn't end up in a mess due to half of it being done in my sleep. But here's a full-length jason todd story.

Coming from an exclusively manga reader, what is it about the One Piece anime that makes it such a bad adaptation?

Hello! ^^ Sorry for taking a while to answer.

I explained some of it in this other ask: here to the post

But there's a lot more changes in the Anime that really matter in how a character is portrayed. I'll explain the 3 i can think of right now without thinking too much (and without any particular order). I'd love to get into more detail for each one, but tumblr posts have limits on images, so i'd have to do a post for each one ^^u

(Also, again: you can like the Anime. As I said before, I've watched the entire Anime 3 times this last year. But you can enjoy something and still know it's flawed. Very flawed, even.)

(SPOILERS AHEAD for Sabaody, Post-Alabasta and Separation Arc).

Let's start with Sabaody, when Kuma is poofing everyone. Specifically Franky-Nami-Chopper-Robin's poof. (Chapter 513 in the Manga, Episode 405 in the Anime) In the Manga (6 pages):

All the action is very fast. Franky tries to attack Kuma and gets poofed right away, without even noticing that Luffy punched Kuma and got rejected. Nami is terrified of what's happening and asks Luffy for help before being poofed. Robin is mostly worried about Luffy and his mental state, trying to maintain him out of harm, and she runs when she has to, because she is used to running and surviving. Luffy is running and punching non stop, getting up instantly when he falls down, not losing a single second to try to save everyone... Until there's no one else to save.

Now let's look at the Anime: First, Franky gets to attack Kuma fully before Luffy even gets close to them. Luffy attacks twice and gets rejected. Franky worries about Luffy, distracting himself from Kuma and that's why he gets poofed.

Then we get Nami, with a bit of slow motion to intensify the feeling.

But then Luffy stops fighting to catch his breath, looking at the floor.

We get a flashback of Nami asking for help, something that happened right before the intermission. But this is not the way to repeat this information. Don't make Luffy stop to catch his breath. It is the opposite of his whole personality.

He then reacts to the flashback and starts running towards Kuma to punch him, but Kuma teleports and Luffy falls. Again: long recovery time for Luffy because he fell to the floor. Chopper gets poofed and then Luffy just... stops. He looks while Kuma gets closer and closer to Robin, and begs. After that he starts running towards Robin to help. I get that they want to get more screen time, but why changing his personality? Why would Luffy beg an enemy to stop when he can still do something about it?

And then we get the same scene as with Nami: Robin is helplessly waiting for Kuma to poof her. Not running away, just frozen in fear. Why?

They literally treated Nami and Robin as if they were the same person. They changed Robin's personality just for drama.

Is it intense? Yes. But you can not do that sacrificing characters personalities and traits. That is not a good adaptation.

--- Going way back to Post Alabasta: Chopper and trusting Robin.

In the Manga (Chapter 218), from the moment Luffy says Robin is a good person, he believes it and proceeds to trust Robin.

The only one not convinced is Zoro (who doesn't fully trust her until Water 7), because he is very protective of the crew.

And then we directly start the Jaya Arc.

In the Anime (episode 130-131), in Episode 130 they kind of made a good adaptation of Chapter 218. But then in Episode 131 (which is filler, but of course not everyone knows it), mixed with all the nonsense they did, they also made Chopper not trust Robin, not caring for Luffy's words.

This just goes against everything Chopper and Luffy's relationship is. It's just annoying.

Also we don't start Jaya Arc until episode 144. 13 Episodes of fillers, of nothing relevant, but as I said... anime watcher don't normally know what is filler and what isn't. And these episodes show changes in the characters personalities and One Piece story that are terrible.

Jumping to Post-War Arc and Cover Stories (Straw Hat's Separation Serial)

And lastly (because I can't put more images in this post xD) I'll be centering specifically on Sanji's Separation Arc part, even tho all of them are very changed.

In the Manga, (Chapter 523 and Covers of Chapter 543 and 544) we see Sanji running away, insisting that he doesn't have a maiden's heart like them, then being captured and dressed against his will.

Why did he let them dress him? Because he didn't fight back when they captured him. He just can't attack them, as they have maiden's hearts, which means they are women.

And then, when he receives notice of what happened to Luffy, he takes off everything they put on him and begs Ivankov for more information and/or a ship (Chapter 593). When he receives the secret message from Luffy (3D2Y) (Chapter 594-595) he changes his objective: stealing the 99 Vital Recipes of the 99 New Kama Karate Masters that are in the Island.

Emphasis on STEALING. Why? Because Sanji won't attack them or harm them, as they have hearts of maidens. He would never attack a woman, no matter how unattractive or ugly she is for him.

He is never shown attacking them in the manga.

What does the Anime do with all of this? (Episodes: 419, 454, 510-514)

These episodes are a train wreck.

We start with Sanji following and flirting with a random woman. Then he notices "it's not a lady" and starts trying to escape.

We also have a random new character called Caroline, who is the substitute Queen of Kamabakka. Sanji challenges her to a duel so she gives him a boat to leave.

To fight, Sanji gets dressed in the "traditional battle outfit" of the island, and he even tho he fights to kill at first, he is too worried of not having his panties seen to fight properly.

And in the end he "loses sight of who he really is" and ends up dressing like the girls voluntarily.

Then Ivankov comes back with news (in his woman form) and Sanji tries to fight his attraction to her "knowing what she really is" and that he likes real women. Again... the anime decides to make Sanji very transphobic. I'm not saying he doesn't have faults, but not to this degree of making no sense as a character.

Anyway, when he changes his objective from escaping the island to learning the 99 recipes, he... fights for them. He also fights with all his might.

This is not the first time Sanji's character is completely destroyed in the Anime. It also won't be the last one.

And this is just another tiny list of the things the Anime changes that make the characters literally other people to me.

Sadly i can't fit more things in this post, like the Long Ring Long Island Arc, where Luffy accepts Foxy's Davy Back Fight twice because "it was fun". Or Zoro being bullied by a random lady in Water 7 to be a baby sitter...

It may not be important to someone else, but for me this type of things are crucial to the characters ^^U and if you change all the "little things", you lose what really makes them who they are

I just want to maybe help clear up what some people might find “problematic” about Mari (but the hate anon obviously did a poor job of voicing their complaints because it was very destructive criticism rather than constructive criticism).

I think the misconceptions about Mari stem from the fact that the majority of scenes in both Captain’s Log and Unwritten (I have read both many times) are just smut and lack a true emotional connection between Rex and Mari beyond being physical. That gives off the vibe that their relationship is only rooted in sex and that it’s the only saving grace of the relationship. Sex and love can be mutually exclusive. I understand wanting to write a sexually-liberated female character, because society severely represses women of their sexuality, but sometimes I feel like Rex and Mari are only together because of their physical attraction to one another. Additionally, there is major emphasis on Mari’s beauty from every single character (other than Rex): Shaeeah Lawquane, Omega, Wrecker, Gregor, Echo, Fives, Wolffe...the list goes on. None of her other personality traits are really complimented, just her looks. That might be problematic to some people because it fails to look at Mari as a whole person. Expanding on her intelligence, empathy, and fearlessness in both stories might help counterbalance her seductive nature while not discounting it.

Also, you reblog posts that include details about Rex and Mari’s relationship in the tags, and that’s the only tell about how Mari helps the clones. The audience doesn’t see that in the actual stories because there’s no explicit subplot that shows Mari helping Padmé in the Senate during the Clone Wars. So for those who only read the story, they wouldn’t know Mari’s political background with Padmé, other than an offhand mention of it.

Again, this is no hate toward you. I’m just trying to help elucidate the arguments against Mari. You’re an amazing writer and I admire you so much for your dedication and passion for your stories! I sincerely hope this doesn’t hurt your feelings because that isn’t what I intended at all. I’m open to hearing what your response to these claims, in case I missed something in both stories; you’re the expert!

I don’t even know what to say to any of this. Because despite literally every single thing I’ve put into this story, as much emotion as I can possibly put into the subject matter, I still have people saying and believing this.

Like first of all, Unwritten isn’t finished. I am only 3 chapters in. I have not gotten to explain any of the times she has done things and will do to help the clones politically socially etc. I literally haven’t written them yet.

Captain’s Log started as a reader, so a lot of the things I attribute to Mari weren’t initially in that story because it didn’t start out as being an OC story.

At the end of the day, I feel like I’ve put so many conversations and situations between the two of them that are so much bigger than just sexual stuff.

I’m just writing my stories the best way I can. To sit here and try this hard to dissect my characters and my story is incredibly hurtful. We’re all just here writing stories for fun on the internet. I feel like lately people on here are trying so hard to make me feel like I’m not allowed to do that.

I haven’t written or published anything in so long. I have had a miserable and extremely difficult year as it is which has made writing the stories I love basically impossible. I was really excited to try to get back to my stories. Receiving messages like this from you and others really doesn’t make me want to continue.

“I hope this doesn’t hurt your feelings” while simultaneously calling for me to somehow defend my response to these claims….like wow. Idk how anyone would take this any other way but to be really hurt by it.

So thanks for this. Really made me feel awesome.

I came across posts you wrote a long time ago about Piper Halliwell and had to reach out to thank you. It seems like literally everyone LOVES Piper Halliwell, praising her as not just their favorite Charmed one but one of the best TV characters ever, and finding someone else who dislikes her was honestly the most validating experience I've had on this site! I recently rewatched a bunch of episodes and couldn't get over just how awful Piper is past the very first season. Fans are like 'all hail our sass queen!' like it's somehow a good thing that she goes out of her way to be ridiculously mean and bitter. She never, ever, ever stops complaining about everyone and everything, and it's not just that she's always in a terrible mood---it's that she directly takes that mood out on Leo and her sisters constantly, insulting and criticizing them nonstop. (Can you believe some people here think Piper was "too good" for Leo?! The man is a saint for patiently putting up with that shrew!) And she's always praised for her heart, but while the other three actually care about innocents, Piper is always the one whining about just wanting a "normal life" and throwing literal tantrums over things like wanting a better wedding or which of two great guys she should choose while there are literal LIVES at stake lol. Speaking of which, on a show about women destined to be witches, who thought it was a good idea to have one of the three main characters whine about how much she hates being a witch in Every. Single. Episode?! She's just such a completely unpleasant character with literally the worst attitude I've ever seen, and I can honestly say she ruins the show for me. (Disliking the turn they took with Phoebe's character didn't help either!) She was unapologetically terrible even before Prue's death, and it blows my mind that fans hate Prue for being too "harsh" when Piper is like a million times worse! Thank you for bravely speaking out so that all three of us who dislike her know we're not alone!!

Wow, I cannot believe it's been 5 years since I watched Charmed when I made those posts. And I never did finish watching the rest of the series 😭 So, naturally it's on my to rewatch and actually finish it this time around watch list. Lol

And I'm glad I could make you feel validated. When you, unfortunately, hate or dislike a character for whatever reason, especially one a majority of fans like, it's always nice to find like minded people. It's why I'm not quiet in my opinions. I want people to have a fun and safe space in fandoms even if that's just to discuss dislike for a fan favorite! Which is why if I am anti a specific character I try to tag properly so fans who do like the character can avoid my personal thoughts. And ofc, this means also never directing said dislike towards the fans who like specific characters. I just let people enjoy what they enjoy even if I do not.

Anyways, I'm surprised people view Piper as sassy. From what I remember, I never saw her as sassy, just annoying her complaints and plotline. And yeah! Prue maybe was 'harsh,' but she's the eldest and had that responsibility of caring for her younger sisters. She had a lot of weight on her shoulders. It's why she was serious a lot of the times and seemed to be hit the hardest by their mother's death from what I recall.

I wish I could comment more, but since it's been years don't remember a lot of details.

China, IL: “The Funeral” | May 26, 2008 - 12:45AM | S00E01

This one feels daunting to me, and it’s not just because I cried while watching this. It’s more because I don’t know exactly how to adequately praise this one. I will say, I was excited to revisit this one, and it fuckin’ holds up. In fact, I was surprised by how much of this I remembered, because it’s been quite a while since I’ve revisited it.

Brad Neely was maybe the best thing about Super Deluxe, excluding Tim & Eric Nite Live. I honestly feel remiss not including his Super Deluxe work somehow in a more chronologicalized way.

It wouldn’t be until much later until this became an actual weekly series. When it became a weekly series, it underwent a cosmetic overhaul, with actual animation instead of a rapid succession of stills which this special and Neely’s Super Deluxe shorts used. I always wished they’d stuck with this more minimalistic format; though I may be alone in that. I remember some people saw this show as a harbinger of bad things to come, animation-wise. People who couldn’t hang with Tom Goes to the Mayor for it’s limited-animation probably REALLY hated this.

The plot of this episode: Baby Cakes finds a diary belonging to a woman. She was a professor at his college, where his father works, as well as the professor brothers Steve and Frank. She dated Frank, and secretly despised him. She hated a lot of stuff about her life, and spilled her truth on the pages of her secret book.

Baby Cakes finds out that he’s dead, and in fact the diary was taken from just outside the site of her fatal car crash. Baby Cakes begins to cope with the fact that he’s in love with a dead woman, and also harbors the secret knowledge that Frank, who is despondent, but also oblivious to the fact that she hated him. Eventually Baby Cakes, in an act of posthumous love, dramatically reveals the truth at the woman’s wake. Frank runs naked towards the graveyard where she’s buried his friends all come to his rescue.

I know this doesn’t all exactly sound like a hilarious romp. But Neely has a way with words and funny drawings that somehow make the material hilarious. Nearly every turn-of-phrase in this is meticulously written to be funny, and there are many expressionistic/imaginative tangents from these characters to keep it lively and interesting. There are subtle, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them sight gags. The imagery has great comic and dramatic timing. There’s references to the previous shorts thrown in there for those of us who’ve been along for the ride. It manages to be deep, soulful, hilarious, beautiful, and unpretentious.

It’s frankly incredible that I never got fully obsessed with the original shorts. I think that’s because I didn’t really like watching these on the Super Deluxe website. Sad! As a comedic influence, I underrate Neely drastically. There are all kinds of moments in this where I thought to myself “oh, I try to write shit like this all the time”. It’s sad to say that my barrier for appreciating him fully was a technical one. If I were able to buy these shorts on DVD and watch them in order on my television set, I probably would’ve repeated them into the ground. But.

The shot of the three kids on bikes, sorta apathetically watching the funeral party bury the teacher. It’s a small detail and they show it for like, a second. This bit might be the single strongest memory I have of this show. It’s just so great. Sorta sums up what makes this great, at least in my mind.

Anyway: This originally began airing on Super Deluxe in four parts, with a few extra title cards. It flows great as one long thing, though. It seems like it’s supposed to be one long thing, in my opinion. I watched both versions, curious to see if there was a lack of censorship in the one scene where Frank freaks out and starts cussin’ up the wake of his lady love. The version I saw was still censored. It’s on Brad Neely’s Youtube channel. The thing is, these probably wound up on Adult Swim’s site as well in this format, so maybe the shorts got bleeped too, and and maybe that’s what survives. Not sure.

What follows is my attempt to piece together a complete listing of Brad Neely videos that were ever uploaded to Super Deluxe, along with upload dates and times. I’ve also included the descriptions from Super Deluxe. Where available, there are YouTube links. Shortly after this special, Super Deluxe was absorbed into Adult Swim’s website, where they offered a fraction of the Super Deluxe library with additional censorship to meet Adult Swim’s standards and practices.

NOTE: The running times listed are as they appeared on the Super Deluxe listing. I included them on the off chance that they would be required to help identify a particular video that may or may not have been retitled. For the most part it was unnecessary, but I don’t feel like deleting them. A few of the videos had a 0:00 running time attached, which is why some of them are not noted. I assume that was a glitch, because none of these videos are 0 seconds long.

ALSO NOTE: first there was a non-Super Deluxe short: Washington. I was trying to pin down a date, but the best I could do was I found an article from December of 2006 that said it played as part of the Spike and Mike Festival of Animation. I went to re-find this article and couldn’t. I guess that’s what I get for haphazardly closing tabs. A Brad Neely interview from the Super Deluxe era reveals that he sold the rights to the short to Spike and Mike along with the characters of Cox & Combes, which lead to him creating the Professor Brothers. I think they were characters from Creased Comics.

New Year Reading for 2024! 🌟 - Virgo

Preshuffle: There’s a feeling of trepidation with your reading, and your years feel split. 2023 was part 1, and then 2024 is part 2, an end to something, I heard “finale” or “finality”, both, either. For some this is in direct connection with the law. Some of you may be finalizing a divorce, a lawsuit, some may be caught up in court proceedings (whether your own or someone else’s). Some of you may be up for Jury Duty (if in US), and some may just be intensely political or involved with the law in some way. For most I don’t get it’s by choice. You’ve been expecting to hear news before you actually will, and by the time you will, you’ll be pretty grumpy about it. Something has been delayed or has taken an unnecessarily long time. A water sign may be the one actually delivering the news to you, who it’s regarding, or this could be something that’s close to your heart and you’ve felt on pins & needles waiting for red tape and whatever is out of your hands to once again, be back in your lane of control. Some of your experiences will be more toxic than others, The Devil is attached to this, and through much of last year, you could’ve felt like your hands were tied.

Meditation: Not a fan of this one but maybe it’ll resonate. You were an investigator of some kind - or Dr. Who? - “you” were played by Matt Smith 😆. I’ve never even seen Dr. Who, not one episode, so idk if he deals with murders or what he/they do. You left a door labeled 2023, heaved a sigh, wiped your forehead, straightened your jacket, and confidently marched into 2024. Right into an active crime scene. By the time I entered the room, you were labeling gory crime scene things all over the room with numbers, up to 20+ numbers, labeling evidence. A single bullet hole in the wall is what you were fixated on. Was the killer even in the room? The only thing between this room and the next, a long distance from this one, was drywall & insulation, no entrances or exits. I don’t know if any of those details matter, with you guys…details matter, I am a little shook by this vision. Why *this* lane? You were trying to figure out how a disaster had occurred, tracing every step, doing what investigators do. It was just so detailed…felt important, and the jarring shock of an active crime scene jolted me, not you. You acted like you do this everyday. First card out to describe you being King of Swords…makes sense. Detached. Working. Busy. Intelligent. It didn’t bother you at all.

This definitely fits with those of you dealing with court cases or anything legal. 3 Cups is celebrating, even if you’re losing some money with Ace of Pentacles rev. You’re going to be happy with the outcome, either because it goes in your favor or just because it’s done. Eventually. Whatever it is, will be different for everyone. Justice is a final decision being made, King of Swords with this can be a lawyer or judge. Seems to be your energy. Emotionally detached, intelligent, only focused on what’s *right* and what’s *wrong*, and what the most fair & balanced decision to make regarding that is. If there are no legal cases, then that’s just you, and that was the energy you had in the meditation. It came off as cold, calculated, extremely detailed and focused, intelligent & mentally quick. Some of you could literally be studying law or criminal justice, and the loss of money is going towards school, that’s reflected in the single’s row too. Outside of this oddly specific story, you’re extremely busy, could be pretty detached from everyone. Family, friends, lovers, for the most part there’s a solo energy…and you are The Hermit. But you’re busy too, and busy *thinking*, all of the energy for you is showing up as logic, intelligence, and learning learning learning. Rabbit holes may be your friend this year, your mind is attuned to figure things out. It’s possible you’re missing an opportunity with a friend, could be job related, because you don’t feel like you know enough, or you literally don’t - you need a degree in something you don’t have, passing it by purposely. Or canceling on some event, which must be a big deal to be in the main energy. Even if you’re not spending time with people, there’s a lot of communication here, you’re not keeping people in the dark. You’re just *busy*.

🔸 Character Card: The Pilgrim 💡

Walking a cobblestone path at night, The Pilgrim is wise and tired, he’s been walking so long he doesn’t remember where he’s even been. Or where he’s going. The road is very long and there are countless lessons and blessings along the way, but The Pilgrim doesn’t really stop to appreciate them when they do come. The rewards are in the journey itself, not the destination. There will always be another destination, enjoy the present ❤️

🔸 Relationship: Strength & The Hermit

Regarding: Temperance

Some of you could feel alone even within a relationship, for many it’s your own doing. You could prefer that, you both have your own beds, bedrooms, “caves”, hobbies, there’s a lot of separateness here, but it’s the relationship row - you do have one. Doesn’t seem like it. A lot of you are simply holding back from ending something - because you don’t want to be alone (but you kinda do). But you also don’t want to be fully committed either. Marriage? Joint finances? No thanks 💯 Temperance here is an energy of coasting along, not choosing either side, not committing to anything really, essentially what The Pilgrim is telling you to do. Enjoying the moment. You are, at least in relationships, but is that for your own purposes or is this mutually agreed upon…idk.

Some of you could be married, and are financially tied to someone, and you hold on for that reason. Not all, but some. Okay for the director’s cut ask I want all the details on this little scene from NDP:

By lunchtime, he’d made decent progress on his report for the Department of Magical Planning and Construction. He figured it was a good time to take a break, and then come back to work on the Diagon Alley Apothecary one, have something to shut Pimhill’s mouth with.

He stretched his arms and back, and looked at Lily at the desk across from him; she moved from one report to the next with quiet speed and precision. A stack of papers teetered next to her; he had no idea when it had got so big.

“I’m going to get lunch,” he told her. “Want me to get you anything?”

“I’ve packed my own,” she replied without looking up.

“Coffee? Tea? A Muggle treat?”

She made a tiny pause at the last one; it seemed to have tempted her. “No, I’m fine,” she ended up saying. “Just don’t take too long.”

“You know me.” He grinned at her, even though she wasn’t looking.

“That’s why I’m saying it.”

NDP my beloved! ❤️ I was hoping to get some asks about it!

Putting this under a cut for length.

As I've said before, I write mostly linearly, with no detailed outline in mind. So this was one of the first parts I wrote, and to the best of my recollection, did not go through any edits/revisions. It came out like this and stayed that way.

At that point, I hadn't yet decided a) whether we'd be getting a Lily POV or not and b) what exactly her feelings towards James were. I was sure that James would be perceiving her as hostile - or, more hostile than he'd like - and that he'd be a bit of a nuisance for her. He initiates conversation and pressures her despite her disinterest - but he means well, it's his way of being thoughtful and caring. (He's like my mom.) At the same time, we know he's a bit of a cocky prat, so of course he grins and teases ("You know me") but Lily, of course, isn't falling for it.

Lily, at this point, doesn't have any feelings for James yet. She knows about his background and career, she knows his outward personality, but she doesn't know him deep down, as a person. To her, she's just a colleague. She doesn't hold resentment towards him since the Academy - it's been years - but she's not making a habit of thinking about him/pondering him either. She's single-minded, there to do her work and leave. She's always known him as a distraction, and while she's not actively avoiding him, she just resists.

This dynamic - James pursuing contact, Lily resisting despite the fact that his presence draws her attention - is pretty consistent with their canon dynamic, I think, so I enjoyed recreating it here in a slightly different context! Lily's problem, in any universe, is that she refuses to acknowledge James - the moment she does, it's impossible not to know, if only somewhere deep inside she won't admit, that she is head over heels for him.

In other news, this scene is set up to give us a glimpse at their daily routine without having to do another round of exposition like we did for James's childhood: Lily has packed her lunch, whereas James hasn't - they obviously don't get lunch together, don't seem to spend any time together outside the office while they're both working. James still refuses to adhere to strict norms - he's perpetually late, he takes long breaks, goes out to get lunch - while Lily keeps a low profile, and is even thrifty.

Also - this is something I've been worried wasn't very clear in the text, but James is impressed by Lily's skill, intelligence and work ethic (he notices the stack of papers). In his introspection, we see him mostly lust after her, but in reality he appreciates her for much more than her good looks. I think his whole interaction with and attitude towards her here shows - without telling! - that his interest in her is genuine and deep. That's not how you act towards someone you just think is hot, and it's not how James would act towards any random colleague (note how different his thoughts about Pimhill are, and he's his superior). James doesn't make a habit of being nice for the sake of being nice - but when he cares about someone, he can't hold it back, and this is what's happening to him here.

You are honestly the most reasonable blog on here (that believes in PR). Some of the others I've seen used to be respectable but now are veering scarily/dangerously towards Qanon, which is a shame, bc it's discrediting a lot of good blogs who understand PR in HW is hardly an abnormality.

PR stunts/relationships are supposed to make the audience confused as to whether or not it's real or not. That's kind of the point.

Back in 2020, I remember seeing Ana De Armas and Ben pop up and for months, I went back and forth wondering about them. On the one hand, they were doing pap walks daily and annoying literally everyone with how seemingly out of touch they were (not staying inside, not wearing their masks correctly, just being extra all around), but it just went on, and she kept getting involved in things with him, and she showed up places with him and I honestly just wondered if "she was the new one" after his divorce with Jen Garner. Then they broke up and I look back thinking, oh yeah, that was a stunt that lasted too long.

I don't follow Sebastian or Henry's careers/lives, but I did follow a Tumblr blog that posted daily about their relationships. Sebastian's thing also gave me Ana/Ben vibes bc at times I was like, is this real? Then it felt fake with all the pap walks. But then every time the blog would post more updates about "sightings" from DM - and there would actually be candids of him/her at a park or walking somewhere (blurry from the back). I think Celeb-as-fuck was the blog detailing everything because she was a fan of him, but anyways, they had a lot of tracking on this and everyone was riled up EVERYTIME something would happen. It also seemed to last on and on and they didn't appear to be breaking up, so I was like, hmm. Maybe it is real. They eventually broke up so it's not a big deal anymore, but their relationship, as many ppl have said, at times very much reminds me of this CE/AB situation.

On the flip side, CE/Lily James def felt like a one-and-done PR stunt but what was weird was him appearing in the UK a month after and seemingly being near her, and there was some hotel that followed them both at the same time and that got real weird. We all know how that ended so it seemed like it was just a fluke situation. Though, NGL, I remember thinking: "If Henry/Sebastian/Ben Affleck are in these relationships, I wonder how long it'll be before it happens to Chris Evans?"

I REALLY regret thinking that LOL...but I did wonder. I just had a feeling it was going to happen to him as well bc he was the ultimate internet BF for so long, and perpetually single to the public. I had weird thoughts that celebs were going too off the rails during peak COVID for it to just be a bunch of privileged ppl acting out of touch. Something was in the water and it wasn't just COVID-19. The industry was floundering and they needed to make some huge commotions to stay relevant.

Again, none of this really matters. But I really stand by my thoughts that in HW, nothing is really what it seems. And I DO think that celebs will go as far to PR engagement and marriage (RE: Kim K and Kris Humphries) if they need to prove a point. I know some other blogs on here keep spouting out that stuff doesn't happen anymore, but I'm not terribly convinced that these charades can't still happen. I do also believe that celebs can be in a PR relationship/marriage while having secret/private lives BTS. Anything is sadly possible in this industry, which is exactly why you continue to hear celebs go on podcasts, write memoirs, even do-tell 2020 style interviews where they all mention, "This industry" in cryptic ways. They're all alluding to the shit that goes on but they can't necessarily say it out loud. But you know if they could, they would.

I've always thought his interaction with Lily was to be his PR rs. That sighting with them was around the same time as Seb and Ale.

Also, thank you for kind words. I try to be level-headed by I certainly have my moments, too and have to rein myself in.

How do your dragons fare in a relationship?

(Fan dragons in relationships)

Nectarine Dragon Cookie: Nectarine is a very devoted and caring lover; they don’t care if you’re weak or strong (Though strength to match them in a fight is always a plus). They don’t give up in a pursuit once they have an interest, but they’re not quick to go to scary extremes over someone. Most of the time it’s the silly stuff or other stuff that goes against their hard wisdom nature that’d win someone over. Nectarine is very protective, especially if you’re weaker and don’t like to fight, they’ll always be there for you and do their best to support you in your decisions. They don’t physically show their emotions well, mostly keeping a straight face a lot of the time but they’ll melt for things the same way. Love it when you want to sleep on them.

Sakura Dragon Cookie: They have a very motherly and caring attitude towards their partner, even if you’re somehow bigger than them Sakura wears the pants in this (Even though…they wear a leotard…whatever). Very calm and collected but shows emotion much more easily, they more often get exasperated at things that can get you in danger…especially if you do it a lot. Will absolutely dote on a partner if they got something even as small as a paper cut. You’re pretty much promised to reach your natural lifespan as they’ll insist on healing your wounds and sicknesses (a single petal from their life tree can regrow organs on mass). They’re equally as protective as Nectarine but more willing to give you your freedom on things since you are an adult and they’re not your mother.

Rocker punk Dragon Cookie: Rocker Punk is a nervous wreck in a relationship even when she doesn’t show it, the cookie raised dragon just freaking struggles. Raised on good cookie morals with the instincts of a dragon makes a not fun combo for the young adult. She’s in a mental battle and takes forever to confess in the first place, opting to be just a friend for a good long while before having the courage to say anything. They often apologize if they think she’s being too rough, a major worrywart over her own actions truly. You gotta be nice and understanding with her for this to work, poor drake got a lot going on in her head. She does truly love you though, so dates often consist of fun stuff you like to do but they’ll always score tickets for your favorite band if you have one.

Red Velvet Dragon Cookie (Velvet for short): The Velvet Dragon is the least you gotta worry about when it comes to bad reactions that could hurt you, you see they more of have the instincts of Cakes than a dragon. Them falling for you starts similar to the dragon kidnapping the princess but instead of a knight saving you, the dragon just fell in love and released you so you could be happy. Very loving and affectionate, always wanting to be around and help you no matter how menial the task. Velvet is always happy to see you and basically becomes a dog if you’ve been separated for a really long time. Honestly, they’d love you so much they’d stop their attacks on the guild and stop following Dark Enchantress for you (unless you’re a minion of hers). With a mixture of Cake and Dragon protectiveness they’ll get all fluffy and growly to even minor threats, and then incredibly vicious if you’re actually in danger. They love to take you out flying with them on clear nights.

Wisteria Dragon Cookie: Honestly, this cannot go well in any sense unless you’re as terrible as they are. I really don’t need to go into detail about how much of a toxic partner they’d be, more than likely Wisteria can’t feel real love for anything other than themselves. More of they just loved and obsessed over the idea of a person, getting to the point where they believe that person belongs to them and they’re entitled to that poor soul.

Ozone Dragon Cookie: It takes a lot of patience for Ozone to fall in love with you in the first place, and after that you’d have to get through his daughters in order to be with him. Ozone likes to spend quality time with a partner, he makes his gifts thought out and meaningful instead of the traditional gold or jewels. If you can’t fly or migrating the skies of Earthbread isn’t your thing then it’ll most like be a long-distance relationship as it’s in Ozone’s instincts to patrol the skies. However, like with his girls they’ll always make time to see and spend with you. They can travel far distances in an extremely quick amount of time if so desired, so if they ever sense you’re in danger you can pretty much expect them to show up to help you. Pet names also aren’t really their thing outside of words like “Dear” “Darling” and “Love”.

Bamboo Dragon Cookie: Bamboo is a nervous wreck much like Rocker punk but cranked up, due to years of social rejection and fear she highly doubts everything about herself. The hybrid is sadly used to being feared by cookies she just saved when they find they’re part dragon, used to being hated for something they couldn’t control. Bamboo would be a very loving and attentive partner; they would care for you a lot and give you gifts she thinks you would like. They’d be helpful and supportive in any manner they could, but she’d always have doubt in the back of her mind. She’d always fear that you either don’t truly love her or that they’ll accidentally hurt one day. This is another case where you need to be patient and work through it together.

Coffee Dragon cookie: Coffee naturally prefers more submissive or needy partners. One they have to do the caring for where they can baby and love them and threaten people who come too close. The morally questionable scientist dragon always feels the need to remain in control, not because they doubt you or your abilities but because they just like caring for you that much. However, you need to catch their interest first before a relationship could start, they're a scientist after all. But they like a good chase in return, they liked it when you were trying to gain their favor while also piquing their interest (though they adore intelligence all the same and innovation). They’re a busy dragon so to make up for that they’ll have you close or wrapped up in their tail while they work, or just have you rest on their back. They’re very affectionate in private but don’t mind showing everyone that you belong to them. Hope you don't mind feeling like a trophy spouse in public they'll pat your head openly, their affection can sound condescending to anyone else when they're being genuine like

"Oh, my precious little cookie needs me~? Alright~."

It's crazy just how good the animated movies are for Hanzo and Kuai to an extent (the extent being made since his modern take was only really in the 2nd movie while snow blind is more of an au but it is still really great)

Like they get that he's vengeful, he doesn't want to make peace he's here to avenge his entire being, but he still somewhat cared for the earthrealm group enough to not fight them, to tell him to hide and not die trying, and to even saving them all in Revenge.

And then in Battle of the Realms, UGH, so great. They know he lingers in the middle because he's not entirely altruistic, but he's good. He knows hes done awful things and would let Kuai finish him if it ultimately meant the saving of all realms. He is tired but unwilling to just lay down and croak.

And Kuai is like his usual self but with more spite towards Hanzo is so intense and interesting. It really makes him feel human.

Like sure the overall plots for both movies are a bit all over the place but SubScorp is so fucking good in both. Kinda like the actual game plots now that I think about it. Huh.

But god, the music, the voice acting, the way Hanzo is treated as a main character, hell THE main character in Revenge. I'm glad they actually did give him top billing cause hot take but Hanzo reaaally doesn't get as much screen time in games as much as people think. Extra skins and cover arts sure, but not a lot in game stories.

those movies are SO bad (I should know, Ive watched each more than 10 times) and Jeremy Adams is my mortal enemy but yeah as usual the ninja storyline is the most entertaining and compelling one.

The Shirai Ryu massacre in the first movie is literally the best part of it and then its all downhill from here and it makes you, the viewer, instantly sympathize with hanzo bc you want to root for this guy, hence making you buy him being a lot "nicer" and a LOT MORE reasonable than he usually is/should be this time around. Scorpion in Revenge IS OOC compared to his previous incarnations but its not necessarily a negative if the details of that aspect and incarnation of him are explored thouroughly, which they are not due to the lack of time and focus bc its a 1h20 minute long movie and lack of good writing and yknow, SUBTLETY, the mk:legends movies are corny as hell. Mandatory Dam "MK: Legends shouldve been an animated tv show à-la Invincible" Argument.

I do agree with you that in game, Scorpion does NOT get as much focus as people think he does, not a hot take at all in my book, but my own hot take is that hes also sidelined in Revenge, HIS OWN MOVIE, bc he has to share more than half his screentime with the entire tournament, like, introduction of liu kang, raiden, sonya, johnny, shang and the gang, the rules of the tournament... Quan chi gets focused on well enough as the antagonist, bc well, hes the main antagonist, but the third character thats CRUCIAL to his story, bi-han, the ACTUAL bi-han, is LAUGHINGLY underused. The actual bi-han has less than three lines. THE ACTUAL SCORPION AND SUB ZERO FIGHT BARELY LAST A MINUTE.

Also since I talked about quan chi. What the hell. His entire reason for doing All That to hanzo was so hanzo could be reborn as a wraith he could manipulate to infiltrate shang's island to get the key of shinnok back, AND HANZO DOESNT EVEN DO THAT, HE DOESNT EVEN DO HIS ONE JOB, and they NEVER show quan chi being upset about that??? What was the POINT OF ALL THAT THEN??? Quan chi goes to fucking... BRAG to hanzo's dying face, as hes chilling there impaled with bi-han, that he killed his family FOR NO REASON WHEN IT WOULDVE MADE SENSE THAT HE REVEALED EVERYTHING TO HANZO TO MAKE HIM MAD BC HES MAD HIMSELF THAT HANZO DIDNT BROUGHT HIM THE KEYKFJDURVF??? WHY.

One genuine interesting thing also is that Scorpion begins and finishes his entire story arc in a single movie, this being: happy life -> losing clan, wife and child to the lin kuei and sub zero -> dying -> coming back as a wraith for revenge and entering the mk tourney -> killing sub zero -> finding out quan chi orchestrated everything -> killing quan chi -> ??? unexplored area, and THAT is smth I wanna see, with his arc ended, scorpion really has the opportunity to mature as a character.

Which brings us to Battle Of The Realms and yeah, its interesting that scorpion (hanzo) and sub zero (completely) COMPLETETY switched personalities with each other. Surprise! Sub zero is ALSO OOC in legends: sub zero has always been the cool-headed voice of reason while scorpion is the impulsive one, here it's the opposite because scorpion has nothing else to do, nothing driving him other than a general goodness within him wanting him to not let the world get destroyed. Legends Scorpion is not and has never been in a grey morality area because every single one of his decisions have been good.

You fucking know I love the fire temple confrontation between scorpy and subz, how do you see that chin tilt and the way scorpion says "That's what makes you different... That's what makes you better." in THAT tone of voice and not go crazy. But if you think about it, Scorpion is PROJECTING LIKE CRAZY onto this lin kuei. The only thing kuai has done that couldve deserved this epiphany from hanzo was that he agreed to tag-team attack with him to stop the cyber lin kuei, and that was mere seconds ago, and then he tried to kill him. Again. If anything, Kuai is MORE revenge-driven in botr than Hanzo was in revenge. His clan is in shambles and his friends are getting turned into robots but no he see his brother's murderer and its on SIGHT, and we didnt even see him having a similar kill bill reaction as scorpion did in revenge when he saw bi-han. WE know Kuai is good because we have known the guy from his 30 years of history, but in mk:legends, hanzo took one hell of a gamble with this guy, which of course turned out to work in his favor. I also disagree that hanzo did awful things, the only thing that's adressed is the killing of bi-han and not only we know he has been tricked into doing it, but we 1) never saw kuai liang and bi-han interact at all to make us sympathize as to why kuai is so determined to avenge him and 2) we never fucking see anything of bi-han in the first place. Hanzo has virtually nothing to atone for and that he is willing to give his life to the guy whose brother he mistakenly murdered only if he promises to help save the world is yet another testament to how good he is compared to that same guy who tried to literally stab him in the back a few seconds earlier.

I WILL give botr one major W for being the only instance that gave us Kuai crying on screen, THIS was good, THIS is why the ninja storyline is the best thing out of these movies.

If you take the gay glasses off for a second, I'm pretty sure scorpion shoving sub zero out of the way when the temple of shinnok collapses is a call back to the original storyline of scorpion being sub zero's guardian, and its the only "save" between the two thats kinda. Just there because🏳️‍🌈. But still.

If you just ignore the rest, the Subscorp is so fucking quality in mk:legends. its genuinely one of its accidental saving point.

Btw dont let my rant fool you into thinking I hate those movies, I fucking love them so much. The timeline theyve built has incredible potential thats, as my favorite blue guy once said, wasted. And I love MY personal interpretations for them so much, but personal interpretations doesnt mean its actually textual, yknow? Long story short: those movies sucks so bad, I love them so much Im gonna rewatch them for the 20th time.

Content warning: more politics and games, this time Skyrim edition. Click at your own risk.

mehagain: Out of curiosity, how would Skyrim’s Imperial vs Stormcloak thing fit in this trend? That was my main exposure to rather heated “if you support x you support facism/racism/classism/imperialism/etc.” arguments where both sides slug that accusation at each other before 3H gave that flavor an annoying resurgence in my dash, so would be interested in how you’d compare that particular mess to others

...ah, Stormcloaks and Imperials. That’s a classic internet flame war. I remember those arguments from a decade ago.

The short answer here is that Bethesda don’t sketch out the sides with enough detail to make this worth analysing in too much detail, in my opinion. I think the most interesting thing about this conflict is that the game at first seems to guide you towards the Stormcloaks, but then the further you get into the game, the more the Stormcloaks seem terrible and the Empire is presented much more positively.

So the Empire try to kill you at the start, for no reason but laziness and bureaucratic incompetence, and on the surface the Stormcloak cause – religious freedom – looks obviously sympathetic. But this is pretty much all the case for the Stormcloaks, and as you go on the game seems to try harder to rub your face in Stormcloak flaws (their obvious racism, their thuggery, Ulfric’s horrible mishandling of Markarth, etc.) while presenting more sympathetic Empire-aligned characters (Balgruuf, Elisif). In hindsight it might have been better to allow the Stormcloaks to address some of those issues, while also displaying the Empire’s flaws more prominently?

For instance, the case against the Empire seems like it ought to include corruption (there’s Erikur in Solitude, again all of Markarth, and it’s the Empire that will appoint crime lord Maven Black-Briar as jarl of Riften), as well as arrogance and high-handed disregard for the native people of Skyrim. Would it have been harder to show us more Imperial mismanagement, perhaps focusing on extracting Skyrim’s wealth and sending it abroad, or perhaps showing Tullius being unsympathetically dismissive of local concerns? One of the problems you have is that apparent instances of Imperial high-handedness or mismanagement generally turn out, on closer inspection, to be justified: the Imperial ban on Talos-worship is obviously half-hearted and insincere and they intend to reverse it as soon as possible, and the Imperial refusal to recognise Ulfric as High King after he killed Torygg in a duel seems very reasonable. There seem to be easy ways to ‘darken’ the Empire and make it a bit more ambiguous.

Likewise the Stormcloaks would come off better if they were allowed to actually defend themselves against some of the strongest arguments against them. Would it have been so hard, for instance, to include a single line where you can challenge Ulfric about Stormcloak racism to his face? I can easily imagine Ulfric replying with something like, “The Argonians and the Dark Elves, like us, know the pain of the Empire’s oppression. My cause is freedom for all who call Skyrim home. But we Nords have long memories, and many of my brothers and sisters have not yet accepted the other races as our allies. I hope that our fight for liberation will help us to overcome old hatreds and unite. Will you aid us?”

As it is, I feel like Skyrim tries to trick you at the start into siding with the Stormcloaks, and then goes, “Surprise! They were the bad guys all along!” That’s not ideal, I think, if both choices are meant to feel plausible and morally defensible.

(That said I will note that I may be just reifying my own biases here. Conservative friends have told me before that I am too habitually institutionalist, and I automatically side against scruffy regular people protesting against prestigious organisations. Given that, well, the Stormcloaks are definitely the scruffier, more low-class faction, I shouldn’t count out the possibility of unconscious bias against them.)

On the political valence of it…

Look, I’ve read those articles saying that Skyrim is an alt-right fantasy world too. I don't like them any more than you do. That said, in this case… yes, I do see how you can read the Stormcloaks as racist, fascist, alt-right, and so on. The Stormcloaks are an ethnonationalist militia led by a charismatic leader trying to overthrow traditional authorities and remove the weakening influence of internal traitors so that they can pursue a policy of expansion and race war against foreign enemies. The fascist reading of the Stormcloaks is clearly not coming out of nowhere.

In some ways I’m glad that Skyrim is a 2011 game and predates a lot of the drama about this, because if it had been published only a few years later, well, the ‘Make Skyrim Great Again’ jokes just write themselves, don’t they? In the much more fraught political climate of post-2015, I don’t think you could have made Skyrim. I think there are ways that Skyrim could have handled its central debate better, but it is at least good that it exists at all. I think particularly after the first four TES games were all very strongly pro-Empire or positioned the player on the Empire’s side (even as Daggerfall and Morrowind showed us some of the Empire’s flaws), it is nice to have a game where you can turn against the Empire, and the Stormcloaks raise interesting questions about complicity, compromise, and so on.

After all, politically I think it would be a mistake to automatically read populist rebellions, like the Stormcloaks, as being reactionary or right-wing? The Empire is, well, an empire, so if you frame it instead as mistreated natives rising up against a distant imperial authority that has treated them poorly, disrespected their traditions, and exploited their lands, you’d think there’s a very easy left-wing or postcolonial reading of it. If the Stormcloaks were brown-skinned I don’t think you’d get many people worried about alt-right readings of them.

So it might be worth clarifying here – my earlier post was by no means meant to suggest that games like Dragon Age: Inquisition or Fire Emblem: Three Houses are bad and should not exist. I actually think they’re quite interesting, and I’m not interested in ‘cancelling’ anything. A hypothetical rewrite to Three Houses that made Edelgard less Hitler-esque would probably make the game much less interesting overall. If Edelgard were not a power-hungry charismatic dictator she’d be a lot less compelling. The way her vision can be compelling despite the political resonances, especially for people who would identify more on the left, creates some intriguing tensions, and that’s great. I want to read these games as presenting us with interesting challenges, rather than just saying that they’re bad and shouldn’t exist.

That said I would be interested in more RPGs like Dragon Age 2 or Knights of the Old Republic II, which challenge some of these tropes or deconstruct the RPG protagonist. DA2 is particularly fascinating – Hawke, unlike most BioWare protagonists, is strikingly unable to effect any social change. Hawke has all the same powers as other protagonists, including both the ability to kill pretty much anything in personal combat and the charisma to persuade so many people to see his/her point of view, but unfortunately those powers are not actually enough to make a better world. Kirkwall is resilient and Hawke cannot defeat it.

But to Skyrim as a whole…

Yes, I see the racist/fascist read of the Stormcloaks, but I don’t think that reading is mandatory. Likewise there is an obvious imperialist reading of the Empire (duh), but again I don’t think that siding with the Empire requires being in favour of imperialist exploitation. The text does not handle the Empire/Stormcloak issue as well or in as nuanced a way as I would have liked, but I think it is sufficiently open to interpretation to be, well, interesting.

Just as long as we don’t have flame wars where we call each other vile names for preferring the magic Vikings over the magic Romans or vice versa. That’s definitely too far.

I know I said I’d talk more about Elsword, but has been in my drafts for a week now. Y’know, the only anime I’m watching this season aside from some Hi-Dive stuff is Kaguya-Sama season 3, Spy X Family, and In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki. I tried watching a few other things, but aside from that Hi-Dive stuff two of those shows almost immediately fell flat for me. And I needed to vent about them for a bit. I won’t tag these aside from my usual personal tags since I don’t want to be that asshole tags my negativity without damn good reason and ruin every fan’s good time, but... I can’t watch Shield Hero anymore.

For a quick synopsis, The Rising of the Shield Hero follows Iwatani Naofumi, an otaku from our modern time summoned to a fantasy world that follows an RPG-like structure... like 85% of all other Isekai anime. The big twist in this one being that Naofumi is summoned as the Shield Hero, a rather hated and discriminated figure according to the past and lore of the kingdom he’s summoned into, and is harshly treated within the first season to an almost comical point by both the kingdom’s citizens and his fellow heroes. This treatment turns Naofumi dark and pragmatic, and as he goes about saving the world in his own pragmatic and blunt way he gains several allies, abilities, and resources to use.

And boy, did I get turned off after episode one of season 2.

For the short version of this whole venting essay: the slave girl party was barely tolerable in the first season and I only dealt with it because the plot seemed to be moving past that. As of episode one of season 2 not only is it continuing that trend, but the length it’s going to justify it is flat out stupid.

But, let me explain this in greater detail

So, Let’s Talk About Slavery

I’ll spare you all a long discussion on why violating human rights and a living, sentient being’s autonomy is, in fact, a bad thing and talking about slavery in the sense of a narrative, setting, and isekai.

Slavery, from the perspective of most isekai protagonists, is the aforementioned violation of human rights and autonomy I mentioned, but most tackle in the same way.

As being only one singular person in a society of thousands or even millions with differing views of slavery due to the culture and time period of the summoned setting, the protagonist either knows or quickly learns that they, as a single person with an extremely different mindset and background to the setting they’re in, likely can’t just overturn the slave trade without becoming a wanted criminal. They usually lament the slave trade and its terribleness, but know it’s safer to stay out of those affairs lest they run into further problems. Depending on the righteousness of the character or how much of a power fantasy the series is, the main character might stop a nearby slave trade with force or guile, and the more pragmatic of them might try to swindle the slave trader in a way that grants the slaves freedom without profiting the slave market, but the most common route I’ve seen is that they buy or rescue a specific slave girl that they specifically pitied.

This is often done as a way to not only show that the main character is sympathetic toward a specific slave, but due to that slave girl being moved out of the dangerous and harmful environment of the slave trade and into the care of the kinder and more generous protagonist they’ll often become a loyal follower that will love and cherish them no matter what as thanks for being freed from what would be a crueler fate.

I don’t think I need to say how this is disgusting on the part of the narrative, but I’ll give you all the brass tacks of it. In a nutshell, this is an insidiously cheap way of trying to frame the protagonist as a good person while also letting them have a slave at the same time. It’s more manipulative than kind on the protagonist’s end for a number of reasons and I’ll just give you all the small list version.

Purchasing slaves, even if one plans to immediately free them, allows the slave trade to profit and continue.

A protagonist keeping a slave under any circumstance, makes them a slave owner by default and it takes some extremely good writing or an extremely pragmatic setting to let that go unaddressed.

The protagonist rarely ever makes an effort to free the slaves in their circle or encourage them to move past them in order to keep them around (I’ve only seen it about twice).

The slave often gains either romantic feelings for the protagonist which is, frankly, not a good thing even with the proper context.

Mind you, all of these points have their own asterisks to them. Purchasing a slave can be done out of pragmatism of having a loyal helper that is familiar with the world to an extend. Being a slave owner within a setting that already accepts slavery isn’t as damning as it would be in our own, even if I, the reader, will judge the protagonist more harshly. The protagonist might be ignorant in their understanding that slave's constant affection is likely a pragmatic coping tactic to avoid beatings or abuse and as we often only have the protagonist’s perspective we never see the internal machinations of the slave in question. I’m not saying it’s impossible to make this work, but there usually needs to be a lot of internal justification and an honest exploration of the topic if that topic is going to be there.

And to be fair, there are a handful anime, light novels, and isekai that address this. Masters of Ragnarok explain that the main character can’t outlaw slavery yet due to his already meritocratic policies and harsher laws forbidding looting and pillaging during war time creating a lot of political unease among the slave-owning elites. Realist Hero has the main character slowly implementing laws and policies to encourage education among the lowest ranked citizens and slaves of his kingdom as a way to pave the way for former slaves to become citizens within the next few decades. Demon Princess Magical Chaos, for all it’s flaws and blunders, has its main character sharply criticize those that engage in the slave trade and spent the first portion of it’s third book outright annihilating a slave market. It can be done, it’s just that some care and acknowledgement is needed to make sure the fact that slavery is, in fact, a bad thing needs to be discussed as well.

But... let’s bring this back to focus.

What Does This Have to Do With Shield Hero?

For those unfamiliar with the events in the first season of Shield Hero, Naofumi spends the first portion of the show buying a slave girl known as Raphtalia to become his sword since the mechanics of the world he’s summoned to doesn’t give him much in the way of using offense. Through various events the two have less of a master-slave relationship and more of a father-daughter one instead, Raphtalia slowly becoming a skilled swordswoman and right-hand woman to Naofumi as she’s the one to keep his pragmatism in check and makes sure he doesn’t push himself too hard through his darker, riskier magic as the series goes on. The party increases with Filo, large bird-like creature that can change into a human form. Through various events she also gains more of a father-daughter relationship to Naofumi.

The latest girl, Rishia, is an archer girl with strong abilities in ki according to the martial artist in Naotfumi’s circle. To keep her story simple, she was left behind by one of the Cardinal Heroes for being too weak and burdening her old party. She finds herself joining Naofumi in order to gain the strength she needs to rejoin her old party and be accepted by them.

And... Raphtalia asks her to become a slave as a way to connect herself to Naofumi.

...

Look, I’m not going to go on a tirade about this, I’m sure other people already have. My main issue isn’t that Raphtalia has confused slavery to be a form of bond due to her being lucky enough to have a master that actually cares for her (keep in mind she’s, like, 12 and doesn’t know how her own mind works). It’s mostly toward Naofumi, who despite his pragmatism usually shows some pretty clear lines in understanding that all that aforementioned human rights violating and autonomy snatching is wrong. He bought Raphtalia out of desperation and pragmatism due to him being so few allies and so many enemies he had no choice but to buy an ally. And Filo, for as disturbing as her being a slave is, was an honest-to-god pet bird before Naofumi and Raphtalia realized she could obtain a human form. Everyone else in Naofumi’s circle is an independent, free person serving him out of their own free will after seeing his good deeds, or are professionals that were assigned (and likely paid) to help Naofumi under orders of the royal family.

Rishia... has no reason to willing lose her autonomy, especially at the behest of Raphtalia. And Naofumi only gives a nervous shrug and basically says “if you really want to...”

Naofumi. My guy. My dude. Why?

Didn’t you just call out the Bow and Spear Hero last season for ignorantly not taking the consequences of their actions seriously enough? I mean... we, the audience, know you aren’t going to do anything weird with Rishia, especially since pragmatic Naofumi mostly sees her as a hassle with small bits of potential, but... ugh, this really bugged me to the point of starting of losing interest in this series. I just can’t, man. I watched about 4 episodes of this, but it just isn’t working for me. My mind still looks back at that first episode with apprehension and annoyance.

The show has an honestly good hook and I like a lot of its themes, but... man, that’s a real dark stain on an otherwise decent series.

Conclusion

Honestly, that’s really all I wanted to get off my chest. I think I’ll binge this season of Shield Hero at some point, and I know the show has started its simuldub recently, so maybe I’ll keep up with the show that way once the dub pushes past episode 4. That one stain of a moment aside, I find this Tortoise Arc really interesting, as it’s showing off more lore about the world and at the point I stopped watching the other set of heroes are about to get involved, which means we might see Glass again, and she’s best girl of the series so far.

I don’t think this show is completely unwatchable, but I’ll definitely have my eyes and ears open a little more when I pick this series back up next month or so. Until then I’ll just stick with In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki and Kaguya-Sama.

It was a bit of a shock, well a lot of a shock when YN is scrolling through her instagram time and it becomes flooded with a gif of her husband passionately kissing a gorgeous blonde.

The trailer for Don’t Worry Darling had dropped out of nowhere and now there was a nasty feeling on jealously, insecurity, and possessiveness in the pit of her stomach.

She knew it was irrational, they were married for fucks sake, but those emotions weren’t always rational.

YN watched it, over and over, until she tossed her phone onto the side table hard enough that it slides off and falls harshly on the ground.

Harry and crew were downstairs, it didn’t look like the Houston show was going to happen because of the storm.

She felts ridiculous and immature for the tears welling up in her eyes. It’s not like she was upset or mad at him.

She was proud of him for his acting abilities and all of his hard work - that’s why she was mad at herself right now.

YN knows Harry is expecting her downstairs to help figure out details, what to do for the fans, etc.. because she was a major part of the production crew.

But she nearly felt like she was going to throw up.

Could you blame her?

Who on earth would want to see their significant other making out passionately for the world to swoon over?

YN scrubs the tears from her cheeks, hadn’t even realized they were falling.

She does the worst thing ever, pulls it back up and starts ready comments, especially from their friends - it almost felt like betrayal. Jeff, Glenne, Lambert, Gemma.

A message appears at the top of the screen.

Bunny 🐰: come on darling, need you down here. meeting is about to start 😗

Her fingers hesitate.

She sighs, she feels bad because it’s not his fault.

He had been offered the role, came home and instantly told his wife that if she wasn’t comfortable with him having romantic scenes - he’d turn it down.

YN wasn’t like that.

When she was being logically she would never want to stand in the way of Harry persuing his dreams.

It was acting and she had even been on set a few times when there were heated scenes but it just felt different - uncomfortable.

YN throws one of the bunny merch hoodies, a pair of cropped leggings, and black nikes before heading down from their suite to the conference room.

Harry had purposefully kept the seat open for her, right next to him, and she slips into quietly as they continue to talk.

There were a lot of higher ups in the room, from the venue, the touring company, his team - deciding on what they should do about the weather warning.

He instantly tugs her as close of possible to him with a long arm wrapped around her shoulder and a subtle kiss to the side of her head.

They’re talking about the people standing outside in the rain for GA, they all get quiet, and Harry nudges his wife, “Darling, they’re talking t’you.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Can you repeat the question?” YN asks, eyes a bit wide in embarrassment at all the stares on her face.

A venue manager speaks up, “How do you think the fans will react and how can we ensure them of another show here. We do not want to lose the business of this concert.”

“Obviously upset. People have flown in for the concert - so maybe if you reach out to some of those fans and reimbursement their flights, they’d be more likely to come back and that would look good on you guys,” YN offers, tense and trying to ignore Harry’s concerned expression - he could always tell.

“Jamie, get on that,” The man orders with an executive nod that he liked the idea and Harry squeezes her shoulder lovingly.

The meeting goes on, she would normally wait for Harry to wade through all the people wanting to speak to him but she zips through the maze of bodies and back down the corridor to the elevator.

She about there when she hears someone running to catch up with her, knows exactly who it is when he pulls her back into his strong chest.

“Wha’s wrong?” Her husband murmurs in her ear, lips brushing softly and his arms keeping her as close as possible.

“It’s nothing, I just need some time alone,” YN sighs, stepping out of his warm embrace and turning to face him.

“Did I do somethin’? Baby, c’mon,” He coaxes, frowning as he studies her face, “Talk t’me, please.”

“I’m just - I’m being dumb,” She chuckles with no humor in her tone, tears welling again and she is quick to cover her face in her sleeve because fans are being to notice them.

“Okay, okay. Let’s get y’upstairs,” Harry replies, guiding her towards the elevator and throwing his arm around her to block her - it would look playful in the fan photos.

The crowd gets irritated when Harry refuses to stop and sign things, take pictures but his bodyguards quickly block them from getting to close.

Once in the elevator, alone, Harry cups her face gently, “Baby, y’gotta tell me what’s going on, m’confused.”

“The trailer, it came out and -“

Harry is perplexed for a moment, “Is that why everyone’s blowing up m’phone?”

Then he’s pulling it out, swiping a few times, and the short ten-second trailer is playing across his screen and he knows instantly.

“I love you. If this movie or me acting with other people romantically is too much for you. Please tel me, m’job is never more important than m’marriage,” He says seriously, face still splotchy from coming in the sticky, hot elevator.

She shakes her head, “It doesn’t make me uncomfortable - well, not when I’m thinking logically. I’m proud of you, I can’t wait to see the movie.”

“I love y’so much, sunflower. Y’my soulmate, the reason I have the courage and confidence is because of you.”
