I honestly hate the fact that Mia Fey gets killed off so early because it's stated that Mia is hopeless with technology, and I JUST WANNA SEE THAT SHIT!

Mia's treatment is intriguing.

She is, by all intents and purposes, a typical case of a mentor who has to die to allow her student to grow on his own. Not quite a fridged woman (Kazuma goes through a similar thing, so it's not gendered), but yeah, her death is at first the most important part of her.

... but in AA spirit channeling is a core aspect of the lore. So Mia... didn't really "die". Hell, in 1-2, she's the one who has to tell Phoenix "yo dumb dumb, check the back of the receipt", and even blackmails her own murderer with his crimes. (sidenote, Redd White's treatment is just as odd. An extremely influential man, who even has the Chief Prosecutor in his pocket, the murderer of the mentor... and he's just a random buffoon taken down in the second case of the franchise. In another game he would have been the final boss)

But yeah, Mia keeps being called back. In 1-4, they have to come up with an excuse to not make her "available", which also ties with Maya's character development so it works. In 2-4, she's pretty much Maya's and Phoenix' personal cellphone lmao. She's not particularly fleshed out, except for some quirks like what you mentioned, that poster of the movie that made her cry, or her love for Charles the plant, but she is a constant, comforting presence, and she feels real enough.

But T&T finally has the idea of showing her in the past, of fleshing her out beyond "super competent mentor", and it doesn't feel jarring, because we've been with Mia all this time, she just gets the spotlight she deserves. And that's where we see different sides of her, like her trauma related to her horrible first case, the pure anger against Dahlia that she vents by slapping Grossberg, the cocky flicking of her bangs...

And finally, finally, at the end, she leaves for good. She can move on. And it's not just the end of Phoenix' character arc: in a way, she did too, even if the events were presented out of order.

I don't know. I just really love Mia.

It would have been a typical lazy Saturday at the Wright Anything Agency, except that everyone was getting ready for a wedding tomorrow that Trucy, sadly, didn't have an invitation to. Athena was out with Maya and Ema shopping for dresses, and Trucy had the run of the office with her daddy.

“I can’t believe I wasn’t invited to that wedding, daddy.” Trucy was complaining for the fourth time that morning as she flipped through the office mail. She’d pouted when she slumped in for breakfast. She’d sniffled when Maya, Athena and Ema headed out. She’d stomped through her practice routine.

She was understandably, in her own opinion, pretty upset that she was the only one getting left out of the stupid Sprocket Airship Wedding part three.

"Sorry, kiddo," Phoenix murmured as he looked over he shoulder at the letters in the inbox. "I tried, but all I got was the invite and the plus one. It's gonna be a boring party anyway– they're on the third one after all."

“But this is the first one where they don’t got an evil butler stinking the whole thing up!” Trucy flopped onto her back with a whine. “It’s got an airship, daddy! An Airship! They coulda had me an’ the bunnies do a show a mile in the air or something!”

"I already gave them your card, Trucy," he chuckled, patting her on the shoulder. "Who knows, maybe they'll call you for wedding number four. Hey– any mail from Apollo, today?"

“How many weddings can she possibly have? Save some for the rest of us, jeeze.” Trucy grumbled. She flipped through the last of the mail hopefully, and she bit her lip. “I dunno…nothin’ yet…“he’s been sending less and less lately.” 

Phoenix sighed. "He sure has, huh? Starting to feel like he's on the moon…"

Trucy’s sour feelings about not being invited to the wedding were small in comparison to the turmoil that roiled inside her when Apollo Justice was brought up. It’d been months now that he’d been gone, had promised to write, and that he’d still be a part of their lives even if he was staying in the mountains far away.

It’d been several weeks since she’d even gotten a letter. It was like he was vanishing before her eyes, and eventually it’d be months or even years, or long enough that she couldn’t remember his face. Just like with her original daddy, or her mother.

“...he might as well be,” she muttered as her shoulders started to shake. 

Phoenix put his arms around her daughter's shaking shoulders. "Hey… hey, Trucy, it's alright. He's not going to be gone forever."

Trucy sniffed, and wiped at her eyes, surprised to find that she’d already started to cry. “He’s gonna forget about us, daddy.” 

"No way, Trucy," Phoenix shook his head. "There's no way he could, you know?"

His hand searched for the tissue box on the desk, and pulled a few out, offering them to her.

Trucy snatched the tissues and pressed the whole bundle to her face. 

“He super could, daddy! I mean…I mean…he’s got a whole new life there with family an’ everything.” She sniffed. “Why’d he wanna think about us? We messed up his law career…made him clean toilets…I shoulda been nicer and not dragged into my sh-shows!” 

He stood there with his hand on her back for a long moment, and took a deep breath. "It's not like that, Trucy. Apollo… has family here too."

“N-nuh uh, daddy!” Trucy wiped her eyes with a loud sniffle. “we woulda known if he did!” 

He passed her another tissue and hesitated. "Trucy, there's something I need to tell you. I've wanted to tell you for a while, but I didn't have permission."

Trucy took the tissue with a puzzled frown as she tried to wipe her eyes and nose. 

“W…what kinda thing, Daddy?” She tilted her head to the side , and her eyes focused instinctively. Whatever this was…she didn’t want to have to catch her adopted father in a lie. 

"When I say Apollo has family here…" He began slowly. She could see how tense he'd become. "I mean you, Trucy."

Her eyes traced over him…she didn’t see any nervous twitch or tell aside from the tension, and she felt her own body tense in surprise as she took a sharp intake of breath.

“W-w-w…what?”  He had to have still been joking, even if she didn’t register a single lie. Sure, there’d been clues…they’d always been so much alike, after all. They even had the same funny little cowlicks…but, lots of people did.

It was common. 

Her daddy held her shoulder gently, but firmly, and took a breath. "He's your brother, Trucy. Your half brother."

“......” Trucy’s brow furrowed, before she felt tears burning at the back of her eyes again. “he’s…he’s…he’s my half brother? W-whatta you mean? Daddy didn’t have any other kids!” 

"Your mother did."

“....” Trucy’s world was spinning around her as her tears brimmed in the corner of her eyes. “Mommy had another kid…and it was frickin’ APOLLO JUSTICE, Daddy??? And you KNEW?” 

HIs hands flew up in defense. "Hey, hey, hey! I was sworn to secrecy, kiddo!"

“By WHO!!! Mommy’s DEAD and it’s not like Uncle Valant would care!” She pressed her hands to her face. “was it daddy? Before he got killed? Was it Apollo? Did Apollo know?? “

"Apollo doesn't know," Phoenix said. He rubbed his hands together anxiously for a moment, and then he slowly put his hands on her shoulders. "And it was your mother, Trucy. She isn't dead."

Trucy’s entire world was shaking around her. The fundamental truths of her life surrounding the many secrets and magic tricks that made up her past. ’Your mother was killed in a magic accident’ and ‘your father left you because he had to vanish after the trauma of her death and Magnifi’s grand inheritance scheme’ and ‘you have no family left except the family you made’...

They were all pulled away in one of the weirdest magic acts of her life.

“.....momma isn’t…dead…?” 

"She's not dead," he repeated. "You've met her. She swore me to secrecy."

Trucy sniffed again. 

“You’re kidding me…it…it…” she rubbed at her eyes. “It’s someone I know??”

"Kind of," Phoenix murmured. He squeezed her shoulders again, holding her close. "It's Lamiroir, Trucy. She's your and Apollo's mother. It's.. a long story."

“....Lamiroir” Trucy repeated dully. “Famous songstress Lamiroir…who sent me flowers for my big show. And she swore you to secrecy because Justitia forbid me and Apollo know we’re brother and sister.” 

She fell against her father with a squeaky, tear-muffled wail.

"Oh, kiddo…" Phoenix held her tightly, scooping her hat off her head, and leaning his cheek against her hair. "I wanted her to tell you both right away."

Trucy tried to respond, but she hiccuped and choked on her tears and held him tighter.

“B-but…but if I’d known I…he…we..” she stammered out with a wail. “I joked about marrying him to Mr. Dhurke! We PROBABLY shoulda known before that, huh?? And n-now my only brother in the world is gonna forget about me in the m-mountains, thinking I’m just an an-an…annoying co-worker!!!” 

Phoenix squeezed her. "Truce– honey, I don't think Apollo thinks of you as just an annoying coworker. Not at all. I would have told him before he left, but I only just got permission to say anything. We'll write him a letter, okay?"

“A letter??” Trucy thumped her fists against his shoulder, “daddy a letter’s not gonna cut it!!” 

He winced, and ran his fingers through her hair. "A phone call, then. Okay? Next time we can get ahold of him."

Trucy sobbed into his shoulder. “...Geeze…my brother. My-...my big brother Apollo…and momma too? I…I think I’m gonna pass out.” 

"Try to stay conscious, okay, bug?" He held her tightly. "I know it's a big shock. I'll get ahold of your mom soon and you two can have a long talk. She owes you, big time."

“Y-you can say that again!!!” Trucy sniffled. “every family I’ve ever had has vanished on me, daddy! And …and Momma owes me BIG TIME for this.”

"She sure does," he nodded. "But hey– you know I'm not going to vanish on you, right, Trucy? Not ever."

Trucy sobbed into his shoulder. 

“Y-you better not, daddy.” Her heart sank just thinking about it, and she couldn’t stop the tears anymore. “Please don’t, ever. No matter what.” 

Phoenix pulled her tight and held her while she cried. "I promise, kiddo. I promise."

Spirit of Justice rewrite

Had a moment where I really got thinking abt the game and went into rewrite mode— I don’t think I’ll expand on this concept for a bit because I have to finish DGS and have other projects I’m more invested in, but figure it couldn’t hurt to just throw down the ideas I have before I forget. Under the cut so I don’t clog the dash!

So first things first the biggest change I would make is relegating this game to spinoff land. My biggest issue with SOJ as a whole is how steeped the narrative is in some weird colonialism, and I think just taking the main cast out entirely could remedy Most of that. At the very least, making the entire cast Kuhrainese gets rid of the whole “we need foreigners to come and fix our legal system” thing, which is my main problem with the plot

Due to the above, Phoenix / Maya / Athena / Miles / etc are taken out completely. Apollo is too integral to the plot, so he gets replaced with an OC that serves as our protagonist. My current placeholder name for him is Hermes, but in this post I’ll just call him Protagonist

Protagonist keeps a lot of elements of the Apollo backstory— he’s the son of a traveling musician who died in the fire that “killed” Amara and was adopted / raised by Dhurke. I am tweaking it so that he’s 4 years younger than Nahyuta, mostly bc I thought that was canon the entire time

Instead of being sent to America, he’s sent to a temple. Dhurke assumes that because Nahyuta has royal blood, he’ll be safe at the castle and can safely keep an eye on things / his mama, while Protagonist gets sent to the temple because killing a monk would be a political disaster and that’s the only way Dhurke can think to protect him

Protagonist really wants to help the cause though, so he runs away from the temple at some point to become a bard-like figure, collecting information and helping the revolution while being a traveling musician. Using his status as an entertainer, he gets into places he otherwise wouldn’t to get intel and secretly studies law on the side

When his friend from his temple days (Ahlbi) is accused of theft and murder, he takes up the mantle of his adoptive father to defend him in court! No idea what his gimmick, if anything, will be. I think Dance of Devotion is enough but we'll see

Nahyuta’s plot is something that’s still very up in the air, but atm my biggest change is that he knows about Amara’s hiding and is being blackmailed to protect HER, not Rayfa. I’m unsure if I wanna keep the Rayfa sibling thing or not, but in spite of that the two are actually closer than in canon

Another big change is that because everyone is Kuhrainese and Ema is no longer in the game, there’s no detective! That’s where Rayfa comes in. I’m still shaky on the in-universe reason for her acting as quasi-detective, my current idea is that it’s imperative for her to get as much detail as possible so she can more accurately make her insights. Really I just wanna see more of her

By consequence, she’s around investigations much more often, following around both Protagonist and Nahyuta. Nahyuta in general just shows up more outside of the courtroom, and him and Rayfa have a strong bond and lots of banter with each other and the protagonist

Another slight tweak is that this game’s timeline is changed, taking place in the 90s and not the 2020s. The literal only reason for this is that I think Nahyuta studied abroad to learn about other legal systems and came back with the most out of touch 90s slang ever. He wears shutter shades in court

Final tweak for now is that the civil trial aspect of Turnabout Revolution is cut entirely, instead being replaced with a flashback case— Dhurke defending himself from the arson and regicide accusations with Datz as his co-counsel. It's simultaneously horrifying and silly

Hi okay SO. I have been putting off making an introduction post because I'd mostly prefer people to just look at my blog and decide if they want to hang out based on that, rather than making some big definitive statement about Who I Am.

But I'm currently accumulating followers at a truly alarming rate and - look, I don't want to give the impression I'm ungrateful, I am genuinely SO TOUCHED by every single one of you who's interested in what I have to say!! The feeling is 100% mutual, and I am having a blast sharing everyone's thoughts and enthusiasm. It's just that my goal with this blog is to have fun and do my own thing. I don't hate attention but I'm also not looking for it.

On balance, then, I think it's probably a good idea to give people a general sense of what I'm about so that if it doesn't appeal to you, we can opt out of each other's social circle before anyone steps on anyone else's toes.

My general philosophy:

I am here to have fun. I might occasionally have a little kvetch about some fandom trend or another but ultimately, even if your favourite trope drives me up the wall, I'm genuinely so happy that it is out there bringing you joy. I try very very hard to treat everyone with kindness and to avoid getting caught up in drama.

This isn't a clique it's a community. Please leave commentary on my posts or drop me a message if you wanna chat!

I follow and unfollow pretty liberally and never mean anything personal by it. I might consider you a friend but still unfollow if your current hyperfocus isn't jiving with mine. In turn, I will never take offence to anyone doing the same with me. Regardless of our following status, I'm always up to chat.

Primary Fandoms

Good Omens - I have loved this fandom for years and years, since before the TV show as it exists today was even a twinkle in Neil's eye. I ship Crowley and Aziraphale SO HARD and I am completely blown away by everything that we've gotten since the first season came out in 2019. Fifteen year old me could not even have imagined!!!

Supernatural - Literal opposite energy. I resisted this show for its entire run, after watching the pilot when it aired and thinking "if I watch this, I will end up shipping the brothers, and I am just not prepared for shipping the brothers." Fifteen years later destiel came in swinging with the steel chair and I grumbled and decided I'd better watch it to find out what all the fuss was about. And do you guys know what? I was right all along. I came away from that show obsessed with it as a gothic horror story and shipping the brothers hard. So wincest is my otp, but I'm a multishipper and I have a soft spot for wincestiel, destiel and sastiel too. As a darkfic enjoyer, I also dabble in John/Dean/Sam and variants. I'm not, like, opposed to less-dark takes on this, they just don't do much for me. I'm pretty careful to tag ships in this fandom consistently, so if you don't want to see something, you can blacklist it.

Capital Punishment in Japanifornia

Hey WHILE I’m here in lawyer hell again, I wanna lay out my thoughts on something that has always bothered me in this fandom.

Why does everyone assume all guilty suspects get the death penalty? 

Japanifornia does have capital punishment as an option, and it IS used several times in the series. It is completely understandable that Phoenix, other attorneys, and their clients would fear capital punishment as a possible consequence of being found guilty. But there’s a prevalent belief in the fandom that ALL guilty suspects are doomed to be put to death. 

This is demonstrably untrue. 

The AA legal system is a dystopian mess and is not 1:1 comparable to any actual legal system in the modern world, but we get numerous bits of information that show more nuance than instant capital punishment for everyone. 

I will now list all of the evidence I can think of. 

Some spoilers for the trilogy (especially AA3/T&T) abound, so tread carefully if you’d like to avoid those.

First off, the trials that we play out in the game are only “initial” trials. Per AA1, under the initial trial system, this trial establishes a defendant’s guilt or innocence. If found guilty, they come back to court later for a second sentencing trial. We do not see any of these sentencing trials depicted, but we learn the results of three of them (more on that later.)

We know that this legal system respects different “degrees” of murder because in 2-2, Phoenix is offered the option to plea a lesser charge for Maya. He chooses not to because he, correctly, believes Maya is completely innocent (and there is heavy social stigma in this universe over even accidental or unintentional killing.)

Not all of the murders in the series are straightforward first degree murder. Tumblr user @giveamadeuschohisownmovie made this post breaking down how each of the original trilogy murders would probably get charged in a California-based court, with a much deeper understanding of CA/US criminal law than I could muster. (Massive spoilers for the whole trilogy in that post.) Especially note the two instances where the murder is actually self-defense (likely voluntary manslaughter/imperfect self defense, given circumstances and the shenanigans both culprits get up to in an attempt to cover up their crimes/frame someone else. Though even tampering with a crime scene to frame someone doesn’t seem to be punished all that harshly in this universe, as the person who does it in 2-4 is out of prison and gainfully employed within 6 months.) 

In addition to being ludicrously powerful and influential in other ways, the prosecutor’s office seems able to influence how guilty people get sentenced. In 2-3, on the phone with Gumshoe, Edgeworth says he wants the prosecutor’s office to “go easy” on the culprit. And given the blatant and premeditated nature of the murder in this case, this seems influenced purely by Edgeworth’s feelings. So there is a very clear argument that the “degree” of the murder may not even matter, if there’s a sympathetic prosecutor on the culprit’s side. (This sympathy obviously comes from a reformed, post-demon prosecutor character arc Edgeworth. I really couldn’t imagine him doing this for anyone during his EVERY DEFENDANT IS GUILTY phase. There’s a little extra edge and angst for you Edgeworth fans.) 

Some people point to the fact that guilty characters never recur after they’re arrested as evidence that they’ve been executed. Going meta for a second, this is most likely due to the fact that the original trilogy games were made for Game Boy Advance, and notoriously struggled with the limits of cartridge space. They simply did not have room to include extra characters not involved with each specific case, and having repeat characters who were mere cameos wasn’t really an option. (I recall anecdotes that they almost couldn’t fit Marvin Grossberg in the first game at all, which is why he only has two sprites. Oldbag’s cameo in T&T was last minute and they just barely had enough room to squeeze her in.) 

AAI2 disproves that idea anyway, as Edgeworth runs into Frank Sahwit in prison, years after his conviction for murder. Additionally, Jeffrey Master has been in prison on a murder charge for 18 years, the longest confirmed prison term in the series. If every “guilty” murderer in the series is executed, he’s way overdue.

Of all culprits, only the following characters are confirmed to have been sentenced to death. In each of these cases, there is some extenuating circumstance that contributes to the harshness of their sentence:

Joe Darke (murdered 5 people, framed for killing a 6th, police and prosecutor’s office specifically collaborated to quickly deal with him)

Terry Fawles (“murdered” a 14-year-old, a police officer testified against him and lied about the crime)

Dahlia Hawthorne (murdered 2 people, attempted murder of 2 others - and she probably faced no charges for Fawles)

Simon Blackquill (”murdered” 1 person, confessed on purpose, espionage/sabotage charges muddied the waters

(Before anybody calls me out, Manfred von Karma is only referred to as “gone.” It is never confirmed whether he was executed, otherwise died in prison, or is just “gone” in the sense he’s locked up and never coming back.)

Even characters who ARE sentenced to death seem to have a long waiting period before their executions are carried out. Terry Fawles was on death row for 5 years. Dahlia was nearing that mark and only recently executed by the time we learn about it in 3-5. Blackquill has been on death row for 7 years by the time his execution date comes up. Like in the real world, this period seems to be when cases can be appealed, so it’s not even like a death sentence is certain to be carried out.

Given this is a mystery/courtroom comedy-drama series, there are obviously exceptions made for dramatic effect and plot reasons, so there’s a lot of room for interpretation here. The black and white application of GUILT = EXECUTION has always struck me as a little too simplistic and dark for a series that asks questions about right and wrong and the motives, emotions, and relationships that tie people together and drive their actions. Many AA cases are intentionally morally gray, and players are supposed to feel conflicted about how they play out and what “justice” really is in each situation. That’s kind of.. y’know... the point and the theme of the series.

But as you can see, the old fandom adage/headcanon that every single murderer in AA gets executed regardless of circumstance just plain isn’t true.

I wanna know your opinions on the "unnecessary feelings" line

Personally I think it's blown way out of proportion. Edgeworth is literally talking about how he's a little nervous that he got innocent people executed and yet people take it as a sign of him loving Phoenix... The same people who cling to this line often ignore that time Nick nearly died because Maya was on the other side of a burning bridge... Soooo...

(and so it's that day of the year xp)

The answer to that is right after Edgeworth says that:

Those are the feelings he calls unnecessary, because they are in their field of work; there's no room for doubts, the same way Phoenix has to be 100% certain that his client is innocent, Miles has to be 100% certain that the defendant is guilty.

We can also add that after being proven wrong twice, those feelings refer to himself and how he's been conducting his life up to that point. The unease of having put innocent lives in jail, the uncertainty of not knowing if he could actually bring justice to the world after failing like that. Maybe even a bit of resentment toward Phoenix for being in the place he was suposed to be. Being a lawyer and saving innocent lives like his father once did.

No wonder Edgeworth says that he doesn't want to see Wright's face ever again.

Basically I agree with you, maybe not "a little nervous" but "a think i fucked up big time". It is as over-blown as it is misunderstood~

And I couldn't say that they ignore the event itself but rather the whole romantic context that surrounds it. Beyond the very romantic act of crossing a burning bridge when you're afraid of heights, Phoenix "ate glass for his gf" Wright did a something that Pearl classified as a romantic act and also parallels other instances when characters have made sacrificies for their, let's say, special someones. It was foreshadowing of literal future events and Phoenix and Maya's relationship.....

is there anything quite as sad as interacting with things around the tavern and hearing phoenix say things like "if maya were here, i bet she'd be trying to jump up and take one of those candles..." GOD. and then. AND THEN!!!!!! he tries to go to sleep and:

Phoenix: ...Maya...

Phoenix: ...If only...I'd been able...to save you...

Phoenix: ...It never would have come to this...

Phoenix: ............

Phoenix: ...Just great. I should be ready to pass out right now. ...But I just can't fall asleep.

and then he gets UP and talks with rouge and:

Phoenix: Then there's Espella... She had a new accusation thrown at her and is again at risk of being burned alive. And...Maya. I can't stop thinking how her death was completely my fault... That's why I need to be stronger... But I can't. I just feel so...hopeless. I'm the only one who can protect Luke and Espella. ...But I'm scared. I'm scared that what happened to Maya will happen again...

Rouge: ...Maya, huh? I caught wind of what happened today in court. She seemed...very important to you.

Phoenix: ... I'm...all right. I'm just...not sure I can protect those two. More than that...I just don't want them to think I might fail them.

Rouge: ............ You want to protect them...and don't want them to think you'll fail...huh? That all sounds well and good. ...But you want to know what I think? I think you're just telling yourself what you want to hear.

Phoenix: Huh? What do you mean?

Rouge: I think the words coming out of your mouth right now are downright selfish.

Phoenix: H-hey, what are you...

Rouge: Have you taken a second to step back from your wallowing and think about how worried they must be about you right now?

Phoenix: ...

Rouge: So it's hopeless, huh? Do you think those kids are hopeless too? Pssh, don't make me laugh! You wanna see hopeless? That's easy. Just take a look in the mirror.

Phoenix: ...!

Rouge: How do you expect to protect those two if you can't even manage to get a hold of yourself?

Phoenix: I-I...

Rouge: ...It's okay. I get it. You had some really...really rough stuff happen to you today. Unimaginably sad, emotionally trying stuff.

Phoenix: ......

Rouge: That's why the first thing you need to do...is just accept it. Accept it all. The sadness, the remorse...everything. Honestly, I don't blame you for expressing just how hard this whole situation has been on you. Who could?

Phoenix: ...... ...I...I can never forgive myself for letting this happen...I couldn't do anything...not a single thing! I did nothing to help Maya at all... Maya...she gave her own life to save Espella! If only I'd been quicker... If only I could've done something... Maya would still be... ...She'd still be here by my side... ...... It's all my fault... ......

Rouge: ......

LIKE. GOD. GODDDDDD. EVERY TIME I THINK THEY CAN'T MAKE IT HURT WORSE THEY DO. HE SAW MAYA (SEEMINGLY) DIE!!! RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM!!!! and THEN!!!! WHEN HE GOES BACK UPSTAIRS TO LUKE (who was listening in on the whole conversation):

Luke: ...Mr Wright.

Phoenix: Oh...sorry, Luke, did I wake you up? ...Is Espella still asleep?

Luke: Yup. She's out like a light. She must have been really tired.

Phoenix: Yeah...

Luke: Um...Mr Wright?

Phoenix: Hm?

Luke: Starting tomorrow... I'm going to give 110...no, 210 per cent!

Phoenix: Wh-whoa! Where'd that come from all of a sudden?

Luke: I...just want to help you stay focused, Mr Wright.

Phoenix: Luke...

Luke: I'm sure with Espella and me on your side, we can take on anything that comes our way! There's no puzzle out there tough enough to stop the likes of us!

Phoenix: Ha ha. No puzzle too tough, huh? That sure sounds like the Luke I know.

Luke: Ah ha... I guess it does, huh?

Phoenix: Luke...you've really helped me get back on my feet. I can definitely see why you're the professor's apprentice.

Luke: That I am!

“Clay, wanna come with me to pick up Truce?” Apollo asked, as they left school. 

“Sure, I haven’t seen her in awhile. We can go bother Kay afterwards, I heard the production crew for a movie is staying there.”

“Yup,” Ema said, making them all jump. “It’s even worse than when the cafe down the street was swarmed cause they had that famous singer working.”

“Because it’s happening to you this time?” She glared at Apollo and ripped open a bag of snackoos. It took great restraint on her part to not eat them during class, especially during tests.

The three of them left, and met Kay at one of the other entrances. Her locker was on the other side of the school, and she actually used it. Beside her was Sebastian, he was pretty quiet most of the time, and Kay seemed to drag him everywhere. 

To their surprise, the road straight to the school was clear. They’d expected it to be blocked off because of filming, but they were able to walk right by during a take. It was, of course, surrounded by people watching. So they couldn’t see what was happening, but they could hear some yelling. Some of the lines made them snicker as they passed.

“Polly!” Trucy yelled, as she launched herself into Apollo’s arms.

“Hey, how was school?” He laughed, stumbling back a bit.

“Good! Can we go over to Sky’s family cafe? Please! Please! Please!”

“Well, we were-”

“Sure!” Clay said, waving at Trucy from behind Apollo.

“Oh! Hi Clay!” She went to hug him once Apollo put her down.

“Hey guys!” She yelled, waving over Sky and Pearl, “We can go! Is Athena coming?”

“No, her mom came to pick her up. They’re going to dinner,”Pearl said.

“Awww.”

With that, the group made their way down to cafe Recht. When they got to the intersection, they found the crowd had begun to dissipate. It looked like they were moving their equipment into the nearby warehouse. The actors didn’t seem to be with them though. Kay had shrugged it off, saying they were probably already in the warehouse.

“I’m home!” Sky yelled, as she opened the cafe door.

“And she brought friends,” Kay followed.

Miles looked up from the register and smiled. “Oh? Do I finally get to meet these friends you speak so much of?” Sky’s face turned pink, and she laughed nervously.

“Hehe,” she waved the younger two over to the bar, and Miles went to stand in front of them. “These are my friends papa, Trucy and Pearl! And that’s Trucy’s brother Apollo,” she pointed at Apollo who waved as him and the others took a seat, “And that’s Apollo’s friend Clay! He’s going to be an astronaut!” Clay waved and laughed.

“Hey! Why does he get a fun introduction?” Ema said, in mock offense.

Sky looked confused, “Because Papa already knows you.”

“Tha-I-never mind. Hey mister Edgeworth? Kay and I will take our usuals.” He nodded.

“What smells so good?” Sebastian asked, looking around the cafe.

“Hm, dunno,” Kay said. “But it smells nicer than usual. Almost like…”

“Aunty Kath!” Came a shrill cry from Sky.

“Sky! We don’t jump over the bar,” Franziska scolded.

Sky was currently dangling from Katherine’s neck, as the woman attempted to adjust her hold on the girl. The few other patrons seemed unfazed, as the two laughed together.

“My how big you’ve gotten, ma bichette. You haven’t been causing too much trouble for your father, have you?”

“Hehe, nope! Here, come meet my friends!” The two turned to Trucy and Pearl who were in awe. “This is Trucy and Pearl, we’re in the same class!”

“It’s the Piece of cake lady!” Both girls screamed. By now, the other patrons were laughing at the exchange on the other side of the cafe. Katherine laughed.

“Why yes, I am. In fact, I just finished making some cake. Would you all like some?” The girls began to nod furiously.

“Careful, your heads’ll fall off!” Clay said. 

Katherine set Sky down, and went back into the kitchen while Sky went around the bar to her seat. Miles handed the girls juice boxes, while Franziska made, and served, the teens their drinks. Katherine brought out a beautiful marble cake, and served the three children before calling over the others. Kay and Ema laughed at the look of shock and awe on their friends faces. 

“By the way, where’s the fop?” Ema asked, as she took a bit of cake. “Wasn’t he working today?”

“Mr. Gavin had some business with his band, so I let him off early.”

“Hey Papa? Can Trucy, Pearl, Athena, and I have a sleepover?” Sky asked, as she squashed her juice box.

“I don’t know. I’d have to talk with their parents, do you girls know their phone numbers?”

“Yes sir,” Pearl smiled. “Well I know my cousin's number, she’s the one who takes care of me.”

“Alright, that works.” He turned around and grabbed a piece of paper and took a pen from his apron. “Just put down their name and number.”

Okay so Cathena is new and I am still formulating thoughts about it and I absolutely want to do her justice. BUT I ACTUALLY HAVE. BIG THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FELINIX BRANCH OF THE AU. This is mostly copy-pasted from Discord please bear with me

good evening lads i have an extremely self indulgent au of the au

it's that phoenix is also a catboy but like. not fully fledged yet? as an allegory for not realizing you're neurodivergent until you're well into adulthood because you masked too well and/or nobody recognized the signs

phoenix started the realization process as a kid when he realized he was really similar to miles and the two of them understood each other better than anyone else did, but it kinda ground to a halt once miles moved away and he started masking

the few inhuman traits he did develop can be easily ignored, or downplayed as something humorous. (as someone with adhd, playing your symptoms for humor so they're more palatable to the people around you, whether consciously or not, is VERY common!) he doesn't actually realize there's something up with him.

Phoenix carefully cutting his food so nobody realizes just how damn sharp his teeth are and starts asking questions (they're just like that naturally? Leave him alone?), and playing off the fact he can wiggle his ears as a weird party trick

He'll accidentally do work in a nearly completely dark office because. He can see in the dark. And he'll scare the crap out of Mia or Maya because his eyes shine and they otherwise didn't notice him in the dark room

He just doesn't realize how weird he is, and he gets panicky whenever people point out that he's weird. But he's weird in a funny way, so it's fine, right? It's intentional, right? There's nothing really wrong with him, right?

Every so often there's cracks in the mask, especially when Phoenix is left alone, because his abandonment issues are made so much worse with his RSD, but that means no one else is around to see these cracks

But the mask starts plain falling apart after he's disbarred and crashing hard, suffering even worse than any neurotypical person would due to his RSD and trauma, and it slips enough that Miles in particular can start to see the cracks and questions if he's really neurotypical

Phoenix starts stimming more obviously when he's alone, is low on motivation, unknowingly self-medicating by drinking sugary grape juice to help him stay collected

But he's happier when Miles and Trucy are with him and he can engage with them, even if he's struggling to keep himself collected, and still trying to support Miles through the whole "accepting his cat side" thing even though he's in pretty serious distress himself

As Phoenix spends more time with Miles during his disbarment and starts being comfortable with sharing behaviors, his mask loosens further and further... and the more physically odd he becomes to match his mental walls coming down

He starts making unnatural noises and doesn't even really notice between Miles's own vocalizations and Trucy being able to mimic sounds. He gets distracted while playing with Miles to help him blow off steam, because for some reason he really wants a turn with the toy himself. He keeps zoning out while focusing on one specific thing, and when a noise interrupts him he jumps high enough to clear the coffee table.

He chews his nails a lot, but he could swear they're growing in sharper. He doesn't know if it's just him being cranky from lack of sleep, or stressed about Kristoph, but it feels like his hearing is getting more sensitive, or at least provoking more of a reaction. His ears are starting to itch uncomfortably, and his back is more sore than ever.

Eventually he puts two and two together. But. It scares him. His life is already so goddamn weird and this is only gonna make it so much harder!

Like. Accepting you're neurodivergent and recognizing your behaviors is a scary thing. Because it means accepting you're not "normal" and will never be able to fit in with society, and most people aren't going to understand you or even make the effort to try. And being visibly neurodivergent in public can be humiliating and even dangerous. People treat you differently when they find out you're not neurotypical, they look down on you and can sometimes get verbally or even physically violent.

So he's fighting against this realization and hastily trying to remask himself right when he's on the verge of this breakthrough, and it's putting him in so much discomfort and pain because he's right on the verge of a transformation. He can't revert, he can't undo what he's already learned about himself, so he's stuck like that because he refuses to accept it.

Miles can see Phoenix is in pain and withdrawing and it scares him, he doesn't know what to do or what's happening and Phoenix won't tell him

He has to approach Phoenix and coax out his thoughts - his fears of being different and being recognized as such, his worries that nothing will ever be the same once he finally puts a name to what's different about him, that he can't go back to the way things were when he was in blissful ignorance of himself

And Phoenix wouldn't wish this hiding on anyone and he hates that it's a necessity for Miles in order to be taken seriously

And Miles, completely clueless regarding the physical aspect of all this, assures Phoenix that he is always going to have loved ones that will fight to be there for him and understand him, that he's fought so hard to understand Miles and create a space for him where he can be open with himself and it's only fair if Miles does the same, because Miles cares so so much about Phoenix.

It's so hard to be understood, but there are people willing to meet Phoenix halfway, to understand him and help him function and give him the space he needs to be his most authentic self. Phoenix is neurodivergent and that is not a bad thing. He is loved regardless, and though the world will be harsh to him, he is deserving of love and understanding.

And poor Phoenix, huddled up in his blanket, being nuzzled awkwardly but comfortingly by Miles, a purr rumbling through them both... he just. Breaks down.

...and then there's an unsteady whisper of a sound, vaguely like a car engine trying to turn over, starting and stopping and starting again.

Miles listens closely. The awkward noise is coming from Phoenix, he's almost sure of it. He asks if Phoenix needs any water, and he coughs awkwardly, responding that he's fine. The noise stops, but... Phoenix is tense.

Miles asks him if he's alright, if he's doing something wrong. Phoenix is quick to shoot that down - Miles is fine, doing his absolute best, and Phoenix appreciates it - but... Changes in behavior aren't the only thing that have been plaguing Phoenix. Maybe it's all a coincidence. His ears don't itch anymore, and his back feels better... maybe it's just all in his head?

Miles is like. Phoenix. What are you talking about. And Phoenix is like uhhhh

Miles reaches up and slowly removes the blanket from over Phoenix's head.

And two soft, triangular ears spring up from his spiky hair.

Miles stares. Then, hand trembling, he gently brushes his fingers against one. It flicks and swivels, and Phoenix lets out a questioning trill, one Miles himself has made dozens of times.

They both freeze.

...Phoenix starts to tear up again.

Miles pulls him into an awkward hug and he sobs into his chest, terrified and relieved and so so confused. When Miles begins to purr again, his own shaky purr tries desperately to match it, new and rusty and awkward. A bottlebrush tail snakes hesitantly from beneath the blanket, and Miles's own sleek one intertwines with it.

They're the only two in the world quite like themselves, but Phoenix has spent years aiding Miles to be himself, and Miles will be damned if he doesn't return the favor to the one he adores most.

What Is This “Ratattorney”?

Hello! I’m Sara Spirit-Small and I am the creator of the Ratattorney AU. The gist of it is, Phoenix Wright is a borrower who knows a lot about the law and does a little Ratatouille situation with Maya Fey to practice law. More or less the entire series continues on as normal, but with the added Frasier-style farce comedy of Maya not knowing how to be a lawyer but successfully convincing people that she is one. You may be asking many questions, not the least of which is “why?” to which I’ll respond... I’m a slut for g/t dynamics, especially borrowers, and mixed-size families, while also being a very big fan of the Ace Attorney franchise, and this is able to combine all of those into one neat little package that has taken over my entire brain for the last two months or so.

*slams hands on table* Count of Monte Cristo Wrightworth AU. Very-very loosely based on the book (mostly based on musicals. Yes this is because “stay” is a really good wrightworth song to me when considering an AU like this. No I don’t take criticism)

Who is Abbe Faria you may ask? No clue I haven’t decided. Maybe Lana but that really doesn’t seem to fit. The judge? Not right either.

So Edgeworth and Phoenix and friends and set to be married. Edgeworth works for his fathers old company, now the Fey & Co law offices. He’s good friends with the Fey’s and Kristoph wants to be promoted so he conspires with Dahlia (who wants to marry Phoenix for a reason I haven’t figured out yet) to get rid of Edgeworth. Larry overhears but he’s so sick with heartbreak that he doesn’t put two and two together until it’s way to late. The evil duo frame Edgeworth for murder (of Robert Hammond?) and Von Karma for vengeance reasons gets him sent to prison without so much as a trial.

Pheonix tries to take care of Gregory but he eventually dies (maybe he’s older in this au? Idk man this is just for fun). Phoenix is slowly convinced that Edgeworth is dead too and marries Dahlia.

Years pass with Edgeworth in prison learning from (insert nice and smart characters here) until he escapes. He meets Gumshoe who helps him with all the paperwork of being the inheritor named in (inset Abbe character here)’s will. He then finds out his father has died and sets out on revenge plot. As The Count of Prosecution.

Meanwhile Phoenix has adopted dear old Trucy. Dahlia has nothing to do with Trucy don’t worry. Mia has spent most of her resources on trying to find Edgeworth and get him a proper trial. Maya is definitely still friends with Pheonix and has suggested he leave Dahlia no less than 3,000 times. Larry sells hotdogs. Von Karma is high prosecutor in Germany. Kristoph has his own law offices.

Cue revenge plot as Edgeworth returns to prosecute all those who wronged him. And to defend (as Defense attorney Gregory Willmore) those who’ve been loyal. Also cue Phoenix on trial (for gay crimes clearly) and looking Edgeworth in the eyes as he prosecutes him and realizing this is the man he once loved. Mia clears his name don’t worry. We then get the fun “I know those eyes” moment where Edgeworth denies everything and Pheonix is hurt by the venom which is clearly aimed at him.

Slowly with the help of everyone who loves him Edgeworth comes around, but first Dahlia, Von Karma, and Kristoph are all sent to prison (for non gay crimes) and everyone lives happily ever after.

Yes I did leave out some AA characters that I couldn’t think of a spot for. I also left out many Monte Cristo characters. I feel like this is probably a niche AU but whatever.

I wanna see a Shonen-inspired Ace Attorney AU, where the Fey family’s spiritual power includes shooting energy blasts and producing powerful auras that blow everything around

Every murderer happens to also have strong spiritual power, and after Phoenix corners them in court they decide “Welp, murder got me into this mess, might as well murder my way out” and Maya and Pearl have to fight them to protect everyone else in the court room. 

(Spoilers for specific cases under the cut)

Like, for Turnabout Sisters, Phoenix thinks to check the receipt himself, and Redd’s like “Fine, you got me, I killed Mia Fey. Wanna see how I did it?” and then he powers up and rushes at Phoenix, who braces himself in preparation for death, but he realizes he’s still alive. He opens his eyes to find out why, and sees that Maya has caught Redd’s punch one handed. She looks back at him and says “Thanks for defending me, Mr. Wright,” then as her aura flares up she finishes “Now it’s my turn to defend you!”

Then she and Redd start trading blows, in a fight that’s not quite one-sided but definitely looks like it’s about to end in his favor. But then he makes the mistake of gloating. “You’re not half-bad little girl, but serendipitatiously for me, you’re barely even half the Fey your sister was. Not that she stood a chance against me either, hahaha!” and her offense at that insult causes Maya to unconsciously channel Mia, who absolutely demolishes Redd now that he doesn’t have the element of surprise.

Naturally, her decision to go home and finish her training at the end of Turnabout Goodbyes remains essentially the same: she wants to be useful on her own merits, instead of relying on her sister’s power.

At the end of Rise From The Ashes, when Gant powers up and Phoenix realizes Maya isn’t here to save him this time, he says “Well Chief, looks like I’ll be coming to join you sooner than I thought,” but Ema chuckles “I wouldn’t be so sure. The power of science is good for more than just investigating after all,” as she pulls out a home-made Morpher.

Franziska doesn’t have spiritual powers in this AU, but she doesn’t need them with how good she is with her whip.

The reason Phoenix didn’t find out about the Fey family’s power in Turnabout Memories is because Dahlia didn’t bother trying to fight her way out. She knew her power wouldn’t match up to Mia’s at all.

In Bridge to the Turnabout, though? Where she inhabits Misty and Maya’s bodies? She knows she’s nigh-on unstoppable then, so she goes for it. How does Phoenix survive? Well, fortunately in this AU, the Magatama also allows him to produce bubble shields, and Dahlia fails to pop his bubble before his heartfelt speech manages to reach Maya through her possession and exorcise Dahlia.

Emzy  belongs to @sallysoulx (IG). Her design is unique and beautiful, almost like an adventurer! She also has some mischievous sides that makes her oh so adorable.

Polly belongs to @galacticbill (IG). She seems cold and stern, but shes in fact a shy and sweet bean that I feel is very underappreciated.

Lisa belongs to @ lisaladvi (IG). Shes such a tiger and godmother, but under that fierce eyes, she’s very compassionate and wants to protect everyone she can. How can we not love a hero like that!

Izem belongs to @vkusnodonis. She has a unisex type of beauty, and the more I get to know her, the more I fall in love with her nature! She’s very dynamic. Quiet but passionate; peaceful but would stand her ground so firmly; rational yet very easily embarassed.... all of these makes her so lovable!

Nell belongs to @greyhands​. I think she might be the first mc I saw, I’m not exactly sure, but the moment I saw her, I fall in love with her! The details, the designs. The aesthetic looks like she’s straight from the game! And I just LOVE how soft and yet determined she looks! I can totally imagine her arguing with Asra while Asra coward into the corner lol.

Julith belongs to @jyuukichannart. She’s lively and passionate about life, an attitude that I wish I can have no matter under what circumstance. I think this may be why people love her so much too.

Eris belongs to @ savenkey (IG). She’s also one of the first mc I got to know in this fandom. She looks very demanding and high maintenance, but under that skin she’s very caring and understanding.The way she interacts with Lucio melts my heart everytime 🥰

RD belongs to @wolfbatspace. They are like this cute friend everyone enjoys teasing, but if someone actually hurt him, they’ll fight an army to protect their little bean RD.

Caragh belongs to @guhzoontight​. I’ve wanted to draw her for a while, and I finally did! she seems full of attitude and her comic is always so fun to read.

Prim belongs to @hoopsies​. She seems cool and almost too rational most of the time, but sometimes showing a bit of her soft side. It’s no wonder people are so drawn into her! She’s full of wonder and we all want to learn more about her!

Isha belongs to @bastart13​. Isha gave me the feeling of a pacific that I think even when Lucio accidentally knock over them, they would just stare angrily, maybe a line of warning, and that’s all.

Phoenix belongs to @joandarkart​. I love how he is so colourful and lively. He gets hotheaded very easily, with Julian by his side, they are a pair of loose canon (omg). Just imagine the troubles they could get into makes me wanna laugh.

Julianne belongs to @timmys-and-scribbles​. Also one of the first mcs I found!! Her little moments with Julian are so cute that I just slowly fall in love with her! And though she looks calm and peaceful, she gets fluster so easily and that’s super adorable.

Kiki belongs to @frozen_mocha_latte (IG). She’s very chill and chill and supportive, though sometimes she can get hotheaded! She likes to tease Julian so much and it’s super satisfying to see him blush😩👌

fav thing: SO MANY THINGS! the potential for her to have an INCREDIBLE arc about recovery from abuse by struggling with her relationship between perfection and the choice between forging her own future or her father’s future. her being trucy‘s aunt—spoiling trucy rotten and seeing a softer, more protective side of her. how much she loves miles and looks up to him, but would never say it.

least fav thing: the games forgetting her after aa2!! there’s so many fun relationships she could have that we’re being deprived of! my fav potential ones are her being a support for klavier to lean on after kristoph is executed (she’s been thru it before with mvk and is one of the only people who can provide true empathy there) and her friendship with simon (which I wrote about in another post here)

fanon pet peeve: not all, but MOST of the franmaya tagged fics on ao3 are for background franmaya in a wrightworth fic. it drives me insane as someone who just desperately wants to see these two lesbians together. i LOVE wrightworth too!! but sometimes being a wlw seeking wlw content in fan spaces makes me wanna scream 🙃

fav thing: again, SO MANY THINGS! His complicated relationship with guilt, self loathing and atonement after aa1 is super compelling to me (and something i super hardcore relate to with the ex catholic guilt). I think he’d have a really hard time figuring out the difference between atoning for his mistakes and punishing himself for them. like franziska, I love that he invents his own future after being told what he ought to be by mvk for so long. beyond his general character arc, I also LOVE his friendship with maya (steel samurai nerds 5ever <3) and adore the many fics i’ve read where they run steel samurai discords, tumblrs, ao3 accounts, and attend cons together, often never knowing that they’re interacting with each other in these fan spaces bc they’re Big Dumb ™ (and overly proficient at compartmentalizing bc of the #trauma)

least fav thing: this is more of a complaint with canon than him as a character, but I wish we knew more about his life in the period after the 4th grade trial and before the fawles trial. Also about his life during the 7 year gap. which is probably why these are the periods of time I mostly read/write fic about lol.

fanon pet peeve: I genuinely hate that so many fan voice actors cast him with a british accent. I know it’s just “default posh” but the man’s from japanifornia & germany lol. ALSO when fanon makes him into a twink. like, have you SEEN his sprite? the man has a brick wall for a torso. solid. huggable. though don’t let anyone else know the formidable chief prosecutor is a softie who gives out hugs to his giant gaggle of adopted children, it’ll ruin his austere image

fav thing: HUMAN WRECKING BALL OF A MAN I LOVE HIS STUPID ANTICS AND PASSION!! Eating the poison necklace, getting hit by a car, falling through a burning bridge... Most of these have to do with his dedication to someone he loves—and when he loves something or someone, he goes in with all his heart!! I also just love how fucking smart he is which I talk about here.

least fav thing: I really don’t like phoenix’s characterization (or character model) in aa5. first off, the character model is so fuckign ugly, dead fish eyes ew. I haven’t played aa6 yet, but to me aa5 is a huge misstep for the franchise. the game gave us the format change of 3D art, rather than adding in the format change it promised at the end of the game. where’s the MASON/juror system he worked so hard on? don’t get me wrong, it gave me things I love (athena and simon and aura), but at the cost of tanking the progress with phoenix’s character arc. and phoenix taking the lead sometimes really diverts needed energy away from apollo and ESPECIALLY athena.

fanon pet peeve: I have a few that irk me with phoenix.

that people characterize him as stupid when he outsmarted kristoph

people make him an incompetent cook. phoenix is someone who goes through money troubles frequently, and I think bc of that he’s had to learn how to cook at least decently well. I personally think he gives apollo and athena masters classes on how to cook on a budget (like, he has a packet drawer like the guy on buzzfeed who does the budget recipes) and everyone’s like “mr wright thank u but please take some well paying cases and quit the pro bono for a sec you deserve to not have to think about this” and phoenix promptly ignores it bc, again!! his heart is too big for his got damn chest!!!

i’m not naming names but there are some popular pre-wrightworth fics i’ve read that have phoenix get jealous of apollo and klavier getting together. I just can’t get behind it. phoenix is apollo’s dad figure. romantic jealousy? it’s bad, bud.
