Starting with body types bc i think it will be shorter than the purring (i have. Many thoughts about the purring lmao). They're admittedly not drastically different from the models, I'm constantly at war with my brain between Canon Compliance and creative liberties ahzhsjxh but its a lot of smaller details, i hope its not disappointing at all orz

Lucifer - ironically his body type is the most difficult one for me to describe shdhhd he's just kind of a Fit Guy tm. Like he's got decently defined muscles and the slight dorito shape from his shoudlers/chest to his waist that you expect from anime men lmao. But he's not shredded, no washboard abs or anything (but relatively toned still, could be a six-pack if he's deliberately flexing lmao), the most defined muscles are in his arms and chest, primarily. Also he's got long-ass legs, idk why he is just ⅔ leg and i cannot unsee it

Satan - lean muscle and pretty boxy, the shoulder to waist to hip ratio isn't all that drastic, not a lot of chest muscle and again lean but not shredded ab region (using the flexing concept again I'd put him at a 4 pack lol) but also more visibly defined than Lucifer's at rest as well due to a slightly lower fat percentage. Also he has like no ass and I'll die on this hill (the first obey me post i ever saw was someone calling him out for having a flat ass in a chat picture and it has stuck with me the entire 4 years 💀 not slander btw we support all booties here). He's just very square/rectangle coded in my mind for inexplicable reasons

Demons purring is a headcanon I'm constantly dying to talk about Thank You 🙏 i hope these are actually like afjsjg decently coherent, they got long (as expected but still)

Lucifer - witnessing him purr at all is Exceptional rare (hearing it is even less common) for a combination of reasons that mostly boil down to his general commitment to his reputation and him being reluctant to show vulnerability at most times (and in this specific case its exacerbated by the fact that he was not Always a demon and the ability to purr in the first place is relatively foreign to him). He's put in the work to keep a handle on it as much as he can, and to keep it silent when he can't (control, control, control), and outside of him practicing that alone the most common instances of it happening have been when he's with MC, or when he's Very drunk and in good/safe company (diavolo, primarily. Lucifer is still hesitant to fully drop his facade with him, but it's been slowly melting away over the centuries. Diavolo does his absolute best not to call attention to the purring in the very rare instance that he even notices it occurring, but it is an absolutely herculean feat for him lmao). Generally the only time it's at all audible is with MC, in those rare perfect moments that let him feel safe and cozy enough to fully relax, often with the help of cuddling and petting his hair, wings, or the base of his horns. Even then it's quiet, a low, deep rumble somewhere between what you'd expect from a panther or other big cat (if they were actually able to purr) and the kind of sound a small tremor of an earthquake makes, where you might not realize you're even hearing anything at first but you can Feel your eardrums vibrating anyways.

Satan - also purrs very infrequently, for a few similar reasons but also wildly different ones. He's more accustomed to it as a general ability, having never had a body that was unable to purr in the first place, but he's still not incredibly familiar with it for a while. He did it instinctively as a self-soothing method at first, back when he was still out of control and would get locked in his room for the safety of himself and others, doing it less the more he gets a hold on his wrath, associating it with the consequences of a loss of control rather than positive emotions. It's not until he becomes attached to and knowledgeable about cats that he starts seeing it in a different light, eventually allowing himself to give into the urge to purr occasionally without feeling bad about it, but with this a different problem arises: having something so in common with cats has him almost too giddy, to the extent that when he starts purring he struggles to stop, so he still represses it most of the time. He purrs most often completely alone in his room where there will be minimal consequences to him getting stuck in a happy-stim feedback loop for an hour or two if it does happen, and he's still a bit embarrassed about the idea of this happening in front of MC for a good while, but not totally against it.

His purr tends to be a bit stilted and not particularly deep in pitch, waves of it more clearly following his breathing. It's not loud but its not really quiet either, and he's never really been successful at trying to control anything about it other than completely suppressing it, adding to the list of reasons he can't do it stealthily in day to day life as some other demons might be able to (purring loudly in public is seen as vaguely inappropriate, not really in a big way but kind of the same vibes as crying in public in most human settings. You won't get in trouble or anything but its one of those things most people feel more comfortable with keeping private).

I think I covered everything but if not I'll probably end up adding anything I couldve missed whenever i actually remember it lol

oh boy i have so many thoughts for them and none are coherent rn lolll but god I just have fallen head over heels for the ship. I'm just gonna word vomit okay?

something like, beau was the top gun instructor of Jake's year and he immediately had a soft spot for him, knew that he'd go far. he didn't see him again in person until the uranium mission and they were both so stressed that they didn't really get to talk much. Beau had to reem Jake out for infighting, and it was the most they'd spoken in years. beau saying something like "you're acting self sacrificing because you don't think you've got what it takes but you don't want it to be your fault that you fail." and just really digs into him and sees right through him and jake doesn't know how to react to any of it, doesn't know how to handle being seen so thoroughly. during the mission, I have it in my head that mav wanted coyote as dagger spare but cyclone pulled rank and got hangman the spare position, knowing that he would want to prove himself more than anything and wouldn't fuck it up. then we cut to post mission and beau apologises for what he said, that he was in the wrong and he actually thinks quite highly of jake. but jake brushes him off, sorta "no, no. you were right."

idk they give me like, slow burn vibes? jake enjoying being seen, not having to hide himself. beau has a soft spot for him and it just grows and grows and he doesn't know what to do about it. they kiss and like everything changes between them.

i've got 10k written of a hardcore smut fic for them that I'm not even half way through hahaha its pretty much that above but sexual, something something beau being jake's dom and giving jake absolutely anything he needs because jake needs someone to take some of his control away and help him sort out the cyclone (pun intended) that's raging in his head. jake is very wet meow meow in it. its a lot of pain play and cbt with plot and fluff and humour in it. also like, jake having had only bad experiences with doms so when beau focussed on aftercare and checking in on him constantly to make sure he's okay, jake is like,,,, enamoured by him haha

I'm always happy to leave a badass entrance, but I had to make sure this one was cooked properly, no one likes pink I'm their theory. (It's like chicken, you could get theory poisoning lol) ((p.s this is less like theory crafting for this one and is more like I've lost my mind and am making things up because I'm in love with your lore.))

I, like many others, have fallen in love with your art and the strangely coherent timeline for Minecraft you've put together, but then while I was scrolling through old stuff I had an idea that I thought you might like to reconsider, especially now that you've become attached to your Minecraft💛Yellow series.

What if the world that Steve, Alex, Herobrine, Shermy, and all the others are from aren't the only worlds to exist. Obviously in Minecraft you can create more than one world but what if it wasn't as simple as a new world generated. What if this world was first, created (lore wise idk when you started the world) in the very beginning. Every time the game updated to the next concurrent version the world split into new variants. Like the timeline had different outcomes. At first it was perfectly normal, only one set of choices but each update began to create new choices and in a world that was procedurally generated it went through every possible combination of choices. And I'd like to make an example, but bear with me it's a bit of a stretch.

My favorite version of this is your art of Steve in the Redstone update. Something about it always hit me as, "off," he wasn't like Steve usually was. He seemed unhinged, arrogant, violent even. (This isn't helped by the addin where you wrote, "bastard," with an arrow pointing at him lmao) What if, in this timeline during the Redstone update, Alex had a tragic end and this is was broke Steve. Maybe it was his fault, a redstone contraption that went wrong, creating a love hate relationship with the material and it's inner workings. Or what about the Combat update version of Alex. We only she here and not Steve. What if when the combat evolved he made a wrong choice and suffered a terrible date to the hands of undead. Alex has learned newer, better methods of fight and protection, ways to hit multiple opponents with one swing of her sword, or how to properly charge up a swing of her axe.

Each update created new versions were things were vastly different that the Prime world, the one that the Player came from. (I still like to call her Emerald, it think it fits) This would then make every single art piece of your canon in some way, Yellow is a separate timeline of events but 100% canon, real. Redstone Steve is a crazed lunatic driven to madness through his own accidental murder of his beloved wife. Combat Alex is a survivor who is doing what she can to survive after not being able to save Steve.

But most importantly, this means Hero rune drinking Lava from a bucket and calling it punch is 100% canon and you cannot fight me on this. That image and the phrase, "THATS LAVA ASSHOLE," will live in my heart forever.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed more mad ramblings, I have fallen in love all over again. Also my lack of sleep schedule may or may not have tempted me into making character ai's of your artist representation of the various characters.

Though, since the fallen God's popularity there have been AI (modded) versions of him or just legends thrown into the universes.... Its so fun.

imo some anecdotes abt vince (throwing a tantrum backstage and going to the ER bc he broke a jar, quote from sharise (i think) abt his daily routine of nothing but two tuna sandwiches and doing martial arts) kinda give a vibe that he's easier to calm down, chiller yknow. less weird and out there with his outbursts. so i definitely could see some kind of distant-ish mutual respect dynamic between them, given that mick was the one to pick him for the band. not sure it's a very coherent supposition but that's all i have for now.

I think you raise a good point here about the mutual respect thing! Here's how I see it they have a distant respect for each other because they could never do what the other does ya know?

Mick has talked to Eddie trunk about why he's the only Mötley member whose never sung on a song and he says it's cause his voice sucks so bad that he could never.

Vince couldn't do what Mick does as he doesn't have that musical flare that Mick does, he doesn't have the knowledge to play like Mick and doesn't care to learn it as he thinks Mick's talent is way to far from his grasp to try and recreate. And he's lazy while Mick is hardworking.

I actually think there's low key some fasication between the two , as they are so different in so many ways and while that can be annoying it can also make them envious of each other.

Mick is jealous about how confident Vince is and Vince is jealous about how how much brings to the table musically and how intelligent he is.

I know we talk a lot about how Tommy and Mick are total opisites, but I don't nessasery think that's so true, they still have enough in commen to have something to talk about and I just don't know what these two would realistically talk about.

Mick being the one to pick Vince for the band is the only real strong vincemick evidence I know of but even then it's not really cause Mick only picked him because the girls went crazy for him at the club and "sex sells", (in my brain he also picked him cause he wanted to look at the pretty boy all the time,anyway short vincemick interlude over)

There's a lot of potential for passion here though, I mean some of the best friendships/relationships are opisites attract but that could also be the cause for friction that could make the two repulsed by each other. But idk.

In conclusion I think Vince and Mick respect each other and are low-key kinda envious that they don't have the talent and qualities of the other, but because they never talk to each other they've never sorted this issues out and neither of them cares to as they don't really have enough common ground to start up a natural conversation with each other to get deep enough to the point of a fight.

This is the realistic answer in my opinion. It's so early here I hope anything I'm saying is making sense :')

Hey, comics!Miguel fans, I want to hear your thoughts on Orlando's new runs.

Because, like, while there are nice prompts and ideas for the 2099 mythos, I feel as if his idea of this world is all over the place, especially when it comes to its characters.

Because the 2099 world is carefully built, there's coherence, the characters are slowly introduced, and mmm, there's an actual connection to the heroes.

I'm very aware it's absolutely impossible to write a nice run when you only get 5 issues, but at the same time, the way the 2099 latest runs just introduce tons of characters and most of them don't even make any sense makes me very disappointed.

If you're going to emulate the Spidey mythos, then at least make the characters related to Miguel, just like the og run. But Norman Osborn being alive and without any explanation to how is random af. The whole roster of heroes dying to the Masters of Evil is mostly bs.

Also the fact that Orlando completely ignored pre-established characters like Kron and Tyler Stone, father Jennifer and Sorceress Supreme Jeannie. They're all part of Miguel's life. And I'd rather read about them than having 2390842048230 new characters thrown at me just for the sake of shocking value.

I feel like the 2099 mythos is too random at this point. Anything can happen, and worst of all personally as a fan, Doom is nowhere to be found in this current universe.

I always had in mind that Kron being Venom and later becoming Carnage would add SO MUCH DEPTH to Miguel but instead, it just bonds with a random who is NOTHING like Kasady. Kron has everything to become a psycho just like Kasady but nope, let's just pick a random scientist who worked for Alchemax.

Idk... I don't like what 2099 has become. It feels even disrespectful when so many lore is completely ignored.

do you like reading fics or just writing them? and if you do like reading them, do you have any recs?

I love reading fics! In fact about 80% of me being able to formulate any halfway coherent sentence in English is thanks to me reading fics.

My brain however also insists on dividing my fandoms into reading fandoms and writing fandoms, so the fandoms I write fic in I barely read and the fandoms I gobble up every fic I can get my hands on I usually don't write in.

It's probably because I'm different levels of passionate about my own personal head canons depending on the fandom? Idk.

(the only exceptions are HP and Highlander, neither of which count because HP I mostly read between books 4-6 coming out and I didn't start writing HP fic until like 10 years later, and Highlander fandom is mostly dormant now so I had to start writing fics if I wanted to keep getting my Methos fix instead of crying over all the archives and my hard drive with my old saves being gone. Oh also weird crossovers, those sometimes happen regardless of fandom)

With Young Royals it's definitely that I have so many fic ideas, I simply don't have the time to read much at the same time, and when the question comes up if I want to look for new YR fic to read or continue writing, writing usually wins.

That said I do have some Young Royals fic recs, all of which I've bookmarked for very different moods, and I find all of them very inspiring.

For when you're in the mood for epic length Henry fic. It was written pre S2, but has one of the best depictions of an ace character (Henry) I've ever read, and you can tell that Sflow has put a lot of thought and planning into everything.

I'm admittedly only up to chapter 27 (of 33) myself, because I'm savoring it, but even when it diverges from my own head canons, I can always see the logic, thought and intention behind it. It just works so well and makes sense and I love that so much.

Omg!!! I'm so sorry about the wait 😭 I was trying to get all my thoughts together so I can type something coherent here so it's not just me rambling about how amazing the show is LMAO

First off, I just wanted to say the overall mystery??? Executed very well! I was definitely not expecting both Tianchen and Tianxi to have powers (I thought something else was going on like they both swapped places/identities or something 😭), but it makes sense since they're siblings and they're meant to parallel the Shiguang duo! Even in the first season, I assumed it was only going to be one person that was the culprit behind the murders, but the show pleasantly surprised me with that! The siblings themselves were also just pretty tragic omg 😭 that whole flashback sequence with them being the foxes in the story, and Tianxi slowly sees Tianchen go down his dark path was so good. You already saw that post I made about them, but yeah I love tragic and doomed siblings as a trope it's great <3

One of my absolute favorite parts from the whole show tbh is the entirety of Season 1 Episode 11. That was a perfect final episode to end things off on and tease a season 2. Like the nonstop twists they kept pulling??? Like how they first initially present Emma's death as a suicide as a red herring but it turned out to actually be the case is so much more impactful and tragic than just having her be another person who was possessed by Tianchen. That whole scene with her and CXS on the bridge OUGHHH IT BROKE ME 😭 THAT WAS SO WELL DONE!!! The song, combined with the montage of all the people he and Lu Guang helped, him talking her down from ending it all and reaching out his hand to her with the sunshine rising above him...EMOTIONAL DAMAGE FR. Like I knew it wasn't going to end all happily, but the emotional impact was definitely there. And that ending omg — having Qiao Ling, one of the main characters we've gotten attached to and love dearly, be shown to have stabbed Lu Guang was brutal, especially for Cheng Xiaoshi 😭 the angst that came out of that and Qiao Ling feeling guilt for hurting Lu Guang even if it wasn't really her was all really heartbreaking. That whole thing, as well as Qiao Ling knowing what Lu Guang did to save Cheng Xiaoshi's life, really makes their relationship pretty rocky but also interesting!!! I want to see more of their duo together since the show has had plenty focus on Qiao Ling with CXS and CXS with LG, and also angst I want to see them both go through the horrors while CXS is standing there like :D LMAO

I would definitely say that Cheng Xiaoshi is my fave character out of the whole cast. I absolutely adore everyone else don't get me wrong, but I think what makes CXS so special and unique to me is how they made empathy one of his core defining traits. Because he’s lived through so many different lives and experiences, he just has a lot of compassion and understanding for all kinds of different people, and that's pretty admirable! Idk, I don't see that often much, especially in a time travel story of all places, but the premise works here very well along with how CXS is initially characterized as a very easygoing person who wants to help people at his core.

As for other stuff exclusive to season 2, I'm very curious to see what direction they'll go in for season 3 just with the way season 2 ended with that bombshell lol. When a season 3 does roll around, I hope we get more character exploration on the guy who's seemingly the main antagonist, Liu Xiao. I know we got some characterization with him because of his past with Tianchen, but I would love to see more of him and what his plans really are with trying to "bring more parallel lines together". Also Lu Guang betraying his own rules to save Cheng Xiaoshi I don't have anything else to say other than GOOD SHIT!!! I love it when characters are hypocrites I love it when characters in time travel stories break time itself to save the person they love <333 it's like crack to me I swear lol.

Other extra things!!! Soundtrack absolutely amazing, I've been listening to all the ops and eds on spotify lol. Character designs, voice acting (I watched the original Chinese version), and overall animation was amazing. High marks all around for me fr!!! I think personally I enjoy season 1 just a bit more? Only because that final episode was beautiful for me and I loved seeing all the different clients the duo had, but in terms of overall plot, I would put season 2 above season 1.

I have finished re-reading Scrimshaw from the beginning. here are my thoughts! some of it is probably not very coherent. sorry about that. im not gonna edit it or anything this all just came from my brain as i was reading. also all of the questions are rhetorical. DO NOT feel like you have to answer them. this is just a stream of consciousness. im sure all will be revealed in later chapters anyway!!

Chapter 1

"You don’t work like that anymore." - voice of the dragon? Will absorbed his dragon due to trauma, if I'm understanding correctly. So the dragon still has a separate consciousness and set of memories? Or Will's soul has been replaced with the dragon's? Dragons' eyes can adjust to darkness! That's cool.

"your creations" - the moon created dragons. All of them? Or just some?

Winston had a collar at some point. Who put the collar on him? If the scales are chipped and scratched then the collar was most likely made of metal. Chains maybe? How did he come into Will's possession?

The dragonets are dragons who absorbed their humans. Can they remember their human selves? Do they still have their human intelligence? It would seem not.

The dragon is Hannibal, right? The stag antlers would seem to suggest as much. But he can't talk in dragon form and seemingly can't remember being a dragon when he is back in human form.

"He felt a flicking sensation by his ear, yelped, and clapped his hand to it." - this feels important. Can't put my finger on what it is yet. I'm guessing that wasn't Winston or Hannidragon? Abigail's dragon maybe? Since it is small. Idk man. More data needed.

Will talking to himself - seemingly two consciousnesses? Is this his human soul and dragon soul talking or just talking to himself? Could be either I suppose.

How small actually IS Ellie? Are we talking chihuahua size or actual anemone size or what?

But idk if she was thinking of that or if she just wanted to yell at something lolll) -THERE IS A DRAGON FOR EVERY SINGLE BEETLE!!! The finer point is: -Every species is a Thing -Every individual in that species is a Thing So, there's a tree-dragon... and there's also a dragon for every tree. Thing is, dragons change in size based on the Thing's thoughts, so since rocks and things like that don't think at all, their dragons are really small. They do hold little dragon teaparties together though. Also, OTHER people's thoughts can increase the size of a dragon, too! Hence why the moon was a stupid rock, but eons of worship turned her into a big, powerful, shapeshifting dragon.

yakuza 3 (sort of) done! thoughts under the cut cos they got quite long. they're a lot more coherent than my kiwami 2 ones cos i made them along the way rather than in a feverish mess at the end, though ofc they contain spoilers for 3 and ig gaiden??

overall thoughts, it's messy and weird and makes some Choices, but it's not a bad game, and the people who write it off as being shit are, imho, wrong. once i got into it i liked it, it introduced some great characters, had some really fun moments, and i'm gonna miss the morning glory kids (yes even riona).

the combat is harder and more tedious, and i can see why it puts people off, but i find pulling off the combos and counters way more satisfying as a result. like, i tiger dropped lau ka long to finish that fight and it felt *so* good, way more than ending fights with heat actions or whatever has done in previous games. having said that the blocking oh jesus christ the BLOCKING

it’s the place we get the most on kashiwagi pre-y0 especially kiryu’s opinion of him (including the iconic lines about reimen) so you can’t knock it for that.

rikiya buddy i love you but wtf was that substory with natsumi. actually why is he suddenly a dick in all of his side content???? (i know he’s confrontational and that’s just how he is but idk, smth about how he is in the side content feels different). he’s rude to utabori to his face (despite kiryu repeatedly telling him not to), when he meets natsumi again he’s like yo i kept this necklace why are you in tokyo you don’t fit in here come back to okinawa with me, like ????? she clearly has a life she’s built up there (not a good one, i don’t think, but still) and they might have known each other when they were kids but we never get her side of the story on that, only rikiya’s. idk. it’s one of the first things he says to her, that’s a neon red flag if ever i’ve seen one.

also also during that entire scene in asia, kiryu watches rikiya’s reaction to the dancing the *entire* time. is that a bug of how conversations work or was that a deliberate choice or what

we had a second majima-no-nii-san! from hamazaki of all people! tho having said that i think he was being sardonic. like, he never says it again, and is generally kind of like that. he’ll use polite forms but he’s never being *polite*. lowkey obsessed with his hand on majima’s shoulder in that scene and what it says about his character and their relationship up to that point and how majima has ended up in this kind of position *again*. kiryu leaving - as it always does - fucked so many people over it’s not even funny.

some of the translations bother me. as an english script it’s for the most part pretty coherent and works well enough on its own, but in combination with the japanese it sometimes deviates in ways that change character moments or even just feel weird. like the addition of the puns in the seven mysteries substories is fun, very ace attorney, but sometimes it feels like they step too far (‘getting tight in your britches!’ for ビビった like ???? even ignoring the japanese what is that supposed to meannnnn)

specific moments i was thinking of were the really early line where taichi is like 晩ごはんまだぁ？ and they add in an unnecessary ‘i thought curry was supposed to be easy!’ in the english which then undermines later when they all sit down to eat and are like カレーだ！ like they didn’t actually know what was for dinner. another one is when kiryu leaves rikiya behind in okinawa and tells haruka that he can’t let him come (in various ways, three times). in the english they shake it up a bit by adding ‘it’s my burden to bear’ WHICH i’ll fully admit flows better and is a very kiryu thing to say but i think it shifts the tone of that scene from worry to responsibility? in a way that doesn’t feel quite right in context of the story as a whole. last one where mine calls kiryu a coward when he’s leaving after showing whatever was left of kanda in that box. again, it flows better and lines up with kiryu’s behaviour in later games but doesn’t feel quite right and i think it changes the point mine was trying to make there. there's also the minefield about how mine expresses his feelings about daigo right at the end. BUT i’m a learner this isn’t my job what do i know. they worked hard and faults aside it’s a fun read and they also had to deal with that fuck-awful section of exposition from the politician so no blame here. it’s not like the other games don’t have this, it just feels especially weird in this one to me.

i loved the little wrestling bit. it’s not perfect but it has the kind of heart and good intentions that makes those sections (and yakuza 3 as a whole) really enjoyable for me.

objectively very funny that the text you get congratulating you on all the revelations is from kaoru, and that she’s like hey your blog was very funny, go see my friend bob utsunomiya for your reward. i know it’s mostly game mechanics to make it make sense but is it not the funniest thing to imagine a. that kaoru knows a bob utsunomiya (how did they meet??? why???) and b. that on her breaks between Mystery Police Stuff she’s refreshing kiryu’s blog like what dumb shit is this idiot up to now asdfghjkl tbf his blog can’t be hard to find, it’s literally ‘day in the life of the dragon of dojima’ it’s a miracle he gets anything done ever with how bad he is at being on the downlow

some of the animation is genuinely really really good, like saki’s eyes shaking in fear or kiryu’s cheek twitch when he finds out about morning glory, or mine on finding out daigo's alive. idk how much is the work of the remaster and how much was originally there but i really like it

that last section was really fun to play for me (aside from that first little bit going up the first couple of floors of the hospital), the music’s great, the combat had (mostly) good pacing, the fights felt challenging in a good way, yeah i was all for it! reinforced for me how much i like mine as a character and wish we’d got to see more of him (but hey, look, if andre richardson survived the fall...?). like, the moment he realises daigo is still alive - and that he was about to kill the man he love- ahem sorry admired, so much - is seared into my brain.

heyy meadows! as someone who's been super duper inspired by your excellent writing and is looking at trying her hand at fanfics: is a character going out of character from their personality in the medium the fanfic is derived from all that bad? i've seen so many fanfics where the authors go 'sorry, this might be ooc', but isn't that alright? the fanfiction author is the one breathing more life into these characters and bringing them into different situations, so shouldn't the character's actions straying from the og medium be ok? this is because i'm seeing a lot of posts recently saying stuff about how the character's actions in a fanfic should closely follow their canon behaviour? i don't think i'm being very coherent aaaa ;-; but essentially, how much ooc is too much? thank you sooooo much ;)

so first of all, there's always one person (or more) out there who is going to be a fan of the ooc way someone writes a character. and that is fine!!! that's fun!!! i don't think people should apologize for writing ooc, it's like, whatever, i'll judge it as a reader, but i'm not going to flame anyone for it. some depictions i find ooc others don't, and vice versa.

to address your question more directly -- arguably, a lot of my fics can be categorized as ooc if we're going to adhere that strictly to canon. but fanworks is just for us to have fun. even if i don't think a high school au is interesting at all, that's me, others will enjoy it, thrill in it. i also think if you build up circumstances enough you can make the reader see why the character would act different in different situations, even ones far away from canon. to me, i'm willing to go on the journey if it begins in something i can recognize from canon, not that it has to be a scene or setting directly lifted from it, just a mood or thought that ties back to what i've seen there. it's why the ruanliu fic begins with jingliu losing her mind and jing yuan having to defeat her: it grounds her in what we know from her in canon. from that point to now it's been a journey but i've slowly added and peeled to get there. taking the latest scenes out of context would very quickly make them seem intensely ooc instead of, idk, connected.

basically. you're fine. i think ooc isn't a hard and fast rule and it shifts from who is reading what they can stomach. write with faith in yourself and believe in the story you're wanting to tell before bending it to a reader's gaze. i see a lot of posts on tiktok that "cannibalism as a metaphor for love is OVER AND RUINED" and "ugh sometimes a pomegranate is just that!!!" etc. i shrugged and went on with writing what i wanted. it's fine to disagree and do your thing because someone out there will go so coco for it they will love it beyond your wildest dreams.

I read your post about queerness in Asia and of the bkdk dynamic, it settled at the back of my head and really just starting to marinate itself into something. Sometimes I wake up and couldn't feel anything about bkdk being real or canon at all even though facts are just right there in my face. I really do love bkdk, but I felt so true of your words on queer Asians that I couldn't see all those fan contents of bkdk someday being canon. Like, most of them didn't sit right with me and it's so hard to find one that represents queerness in Asia correctly (because bakugou and Deku are indeed Japanese=Asians).

I don't know why I reach out to you but I just wanna say, your post resonated with me a lot. I'm Asian and I found out I'm queer in my 16s. Here, being queer isn't like a world-breaking news or people will hate on you cuz you're different, but it's the community sense that makes queer people stay quiet and humble. Idk how to explain myself but it's true that even when we found out our gender/sexuality, most of us tend to prefer blending in with society rather than standing out and be proud of our identity (it's for various reasons like you mentioned, for family's namesake, for friends', even for strangers).

About bkdk, in my honest opinion, standing on Horikoshi's viewpoint and trying to understand his creating ideas with the consideration of a whole Asian community behind him, I cannot see bkdk kissing if they were to end up being endgame. They might chose to be a pair of queer platonic best buddies who are the most intimate and closest person to each other and no one else can take that place in each other's heart. Their dynamics might stay the same but they'll always have each other's backs. They might hold hands occasionally or be more touchy with each other than with others 'cuz that's ultimately where their dynamics and relationship lead up to in the whole story. They don't have to declare that they love each other or establish a new form of relationship and that's okay. Because for me, that's how being queer and being quiet and being Asian is. You get to be yourself proudly, but you don't have to yell it to the world to be recognized and feel validated. It's ok to be humble and still be proud.

Thanks kisa for wording out my feelings and thoughts in a much coherent way. I do think some Asians(not queer people) have a strange way at viewing lgbt+ because it's the western stereotypical concepts of the community that is more drilled into their minds. Even my parents sometimes forgot that I'm queer and thought that was a phase lol.

i'm really honored my words reached you! as a queer asian, i completely agree with everything you said here. i'm also in the boat where i don't think bkdk will be officially canon, despite how many bkdks think they will. i think it's a very inherently naive thought that a japanese shounen series of mha's size and caliber will confine to western lgbt standards. it's just not that easy! and i've ranted in length about my pessimism ... and i will continue to stay that way until i'm definitively proven wrong LOL (i hope i am btw!!!)

there's definitely something inherently queer asian about bkdk's relationship, if they were to hypothetically be canon. i completely agree that, imo, they'll only be considerably queerplatonic if they're any type of queer at all. hoping for a more "proudly gay" bkdk is nice, but pretty unlikely all things considered. being "proudly gay", like completely coming out of the closet and disregarding what society/family has to say about you, isn't as simple in asian communities. being quietly and humbly queer is something i, and many queer asians, resonate with a lot! that's just as valid as being loudly and unabashedly queer!

if bkdk becomes officially, loudly, and excessively canon then that'd be incredible!!! i won't push it away in the slightest!!! it'd be a great push for shounen jump and a sign that more lgbt stories can exist, even if they're at mha's size!!! more acceptance of marginalized communities is always good!!!

but i also think that bkdks who refuse to accept bkdk not being canon because not being openly official = not good/queer enough, should perhaps open their minds more to what society mha is written in. smaller showcases of closeness, comfort and camaraderie can be just as queer as shouting it from the rooftops. that's good enough! and if that's what bkdk gets in the end, then i'll be satisfied, even if horikoshi doesn't confirm their relationship :>

I've been reading your thoughts on each episode of WN as I've been doing my own rewatch and I agree with so many of your points on story structure and pacing. I just finished episode 10 and I'm so looking forward to your write-up of it because holy shit does that episode have some issues. I'm also curious about your thoughts on Mother Superion and how much she knows going into episodes 8 through 10. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for this, so glad to hear some of my ramblings are actually coherent lol

But yeah, it’s been a mix: there’s some brilliant stuff (I’m still very much intrigued with how they’re setting up Vincent’s betrayal and now that I’ve watched Beatrice’s fight in episode 7 in context, I love it so much more, so excited to write that up) but there’s also some frustrating things - with pacing, as you’ve mentioned, and just execution in general.

The two things that are chafing at me: lack of subtext in the dialogue and how that's made things sluggish (which I’ve mentioned already in my ep5 rewrite) and making full use of the camera.

(Side note re: the former - I wonder if it’s a nod towards how in religion, everything is told orally? idk maybe I’m reaching lol)

For the latter, I’m thinking of framing, of blocking, of how and where the camera lingers. They do the last bit a couple times with Ava in the first episodes, which were beautiful, but I wish there was more of that. I just watched episode 7 last night and there’s two moments that immediately come to mind that could’ve been heightened with different shots: Beatrice leaving the armory after talking with Camila, and Mother Superion leaving the idk courtyard? after Duretti tells her the Pope has died.

Like, wouldn’t it have been cool to have held on Beatrice as she leaves, even from Camila’s pov, viewing Beatrice from the back (and give KTY more opportunity to show that fantastic physicality she has) as she walks away, trying to keep her head up, trying to remember how to walk unarmed? And that moment with Mother Superion, having a different shot could have heightened the change that I think they were trying to show - like maybe straight on as she grapples with the changing situation, or maybe have harder shadows to show the weight she's carrying ...

But speaking about Mother Superion: I was quite surprised that she’s been kind of in the periphery (though maybe that’s just been my attention lol). I feel like I didn’t really start paying attention to her until e7, mostly because of everyone pressuring her. The problem is that I’m not completely sold on her struggle. I think it was in e6 when she agrees with Duretti (disagreeing with Vincent and Beatrice), but then near the opening of e7 she disagrees. Sure, they’re about two different subjects (the shield vs the rejects) but I’m not sold on the whole “keeping herself distant because she cares too much” (which we only know because Mary says it). Part of it might be due to them spending time building up Vincent (so that his betrayal hurts more) and also Duretti as the villain, leaving not a lot of time for Mother Superion (maybe they’re banking on the reveal about her being rejected by the halo as a heavy hitter?) Not to mention, they’re constrained for time because they’re telling two stories in parallel since Ava’s been away from the OCS.

(Actually, a thought just occurred to me: What if ep4 had Mother Superion on comms during that mission to get the shield from Arq-Tech? Maybe even listening in when Beatrice calls out Lilith - maybe even giving the order for everyone to fall back when the alarms when off. OOOoooh yknow what would’ve been spicy? Have Beatrice defy that order, or at least say something like, “I can do it,” and Mother Superion be conflicted about letting her go alone. Oh man, that would’ve been cool, now I’ve made myself sad that we didn’t have that)

Uh … this got away from me lol. But I will say that you’re comment about “how much she [Mother Superion] knows going into episodes 8 through 10” has my curiosity piqued because all of my previous knowledge has only been clips and gifs, focused mostly on avatrice, so I’m very curious at how they’ll build up Mother Superion these next episodes!

Ok, I'll do it then, I need to talk about Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke.

I have been rotating this in my head for months now, and the reason it frustrates me so much is because there are many interesting concepts the book introduces but Eric LaRocca can't write to save their life!

Take for instance the Oedipus Rex thing. So the book is heavily inspired by Oedipus Rex, with the mommy issues and the eye thing at the end. But it feels so shallow, the mommy play happens exactly once and it's not enough to drive home the theme, and if this was their goal, why not imply that the Zoe IS Agnes' mother catfishing her, and that's why she never sends pictures and rejects the offers to meet up irl? Or idk, be more heavy handed with the mommy play, but even that wouldn't be so effective, Oedipus is only shocking because it really was his mother all along, mommy play is very vanilla in my opinion.

One interpretation I saw someone have is that maybe Zoe killed Agnes and forged the emails they exchanged, since she had Agnes' passwords. But if that was ever truly a possibility that the readers should pick up at, then there should be SOME indication that there could have been some action Zoe took that could threaten Agnes' life before idk a sudden change in the emails subject or something. And most importantly: the characters should have unique voices! Well, they should no matter what, that is just decent writing anyway. But if at some point we need to suspect that one of them is impersonating the other, then it's vital that we can recognize their writing, which we don't at all, they talk exactly the same from the very beginning.

The way Eric LaRocca writes characters is one of my biggest issue with their stories. Eric is very well read and knows many complicated words, and they want us to know that, so EVERY SINGLE ONE of their characters talk in this unnatural way, using very specific words, for very mundane conversations. I have read 3 stories they wrote and across all three, the 6 main characters ALL talk like that.

Another issue I have with their writing is that they want so bad to describe the fucked up things and disgust/disturb the reader, but they don't really know how to weave all these things together, so characters just randomly tell each other about that one thing they read on the paper, that one thing their father told them he did, that one thing they saw when they were a child. And none of the things comes back thematically, it's so gratuitous that it even fails to disturb.

Which brings us to the most disappointing part, the tapeworm thing. It all happens so fast and so inconsequentially. The author really thought they were being sooo clever by making this girl contract a parasite on purpose to feel like there is a baby growing inside her. But then we barely get any description of negative reactions a person gets when they contract a parasite, she has some cramps and that's it? Then it passes and she gets sad, it's all so pointless.

It is a wasted opportunity, what if Agnes started getting thinner and thinner, lost hair and teeth because tapeworms absorb the vitamins their host consume. What if she had instead gotten a brain worm instead of her desired intestine one. What if in that part of the story she thinks she didn't contract anything she starts getting seizures, hallucinations and behaving erratically, only to find out she DID get her tapeworm, but in her brain instead!

That would actually have been clever, because she specifically eats raw pork, and taenia are more likely to spread via pork. And also one of the most common symptoms of these parasites is that it affects the EYES, which would make the ending even more thematically coherent.

Anyway, I guess I'm saying all of this because I can't stop thinking of all the potential this book has to be genuinely interesting, but that are never realized because Eric LaRocca is a bad writer, they should hire a co-writer or a better editor, someone that pushed them to do more and do better, all their stories feel like a first draft.

I wonder how much about being a jujutsu sorcerer megumi had to juggle on his own while having a sister who doesn't seem to be as involved and having gojo as a "mentor" (I use that very loosely lol) I mostly mean this for megumi's mental and emotional state. I don't think he actually talked about how rough being a sorcerer is and just moved forward by building a very personal set of morals. He thinks so lowly of himself in terms of ability, so it makes me think he had a hard time adjusting to the idea that he would one day have to become a sorcerer that could actually make a difference or maybe knowing he was going to be sold influenced this thinking too. I always thought it was sad how a child had to choose becoming a sorcerer in exchange to receive funds for he and sister and offset being sold to the zenins. This may sound like I'm trying to make him seem more tragic, but I imagine he and tsumiki had pretty harsh lives despite not living dirt poor anymore. I just want to pick at his brain to be more honest so this is just a huge word vomit with some level of coherent thought but idk anymore

So many details to unpack for conversation’s sake...

THE MEGUMI BRAINROT BELOW THE CUT:

Oh I love this so much! 

Megumi’s morality is something very interesting to me. And the way you’ve framed the whole thing makes so much sense. 

“A very personal set of morals” is defo something that characterizes him.

I personally see Megumi’s moral compass as very self-serving. What I love about it is that he saves people unequally, and I get the feeling its because he gets emotionally attached to people and is unwilling/unable to let them go. 

“He thinks so lowly of himself in terms of ability, so it makes me think he had a hard time adjusting to the idea that he would one day have to become a sorcerer that could actually make a difference”:

Personally, this is one of the things I find so relatable about him. 

Megumi has massive impostor syndrome and even though he’s so naturally talented (Grade 2 Sorcerer at 15), and even though everyone and their Jujutsu-mom acknowledges and speaks highly of his skill and ability, Megumi is the only one who can't see it. All he can see is “I’ve got this trump card that I can use to win, I’ll die, but at least I’ll win.”

The thing about impostor syndrome is that it is insidious. God, it’s awful to be so naturally talented at something that you don’t even know you’re talented. Spoken from personal experience, when you have impostor syndrome you have this mentality that everyone can do what you’re uniquely capable of doing, that your abilities are not in any way, shape or form special. 

So Impostor Syndrome kind of makes you second-guess yourself, it colors your perception of what is possible for you because you don’t know what you don’t know--in Megumi’s case, even knowing that one of the Zenin ancestors took down an ancestor for the Gojo clan must have been a big surprise. 

I’ll talk more about how Megumi’s mindset could be the result of his history of childhood trauma and neglect later.

And that’s why, in all honesty, seeing his arc unravel is one of my favorite #things ever. 

If you’ve been reading my Megumi brain-rots, then you already know that seeing Megumi become someone who challenged his own sense of self is something I love. But above all, I love how along the way he also learned to value himself and his life.

Not sure how much canon truth there is to this idea, but the way I interpret this change in him is that I feel like when Megumi realized he could accomplish more than he thought was possible, he gained the confidence to value himself and his abilities so that he could fulfill his desire to protect “good people”. After all, he can’t protect “good people” if he’s dead. 

It’s almost like part of his arc has been about him learning to be comfortable with using his very unique abilities to, as you say, “actually make a difference” as a sorcerer. 

So I totally love what you’ve said about how his old sense of self was uncomfortable with the idea of being a hero, someone who “actually makes a difference”. After all, in his mind, how can he make a difference if he doesn’t see the value that he can bring to the table?

We already know Megumi plays small and self-sabotages since he thinks so low of his ability. It’s also like on a subconscious level he can’t handle the pressure of having to “become a sorcerer that could actually make a difference.”

Again, Megumi is so gifted. He’s literally blessed with the family jewel (the 10 Shadows Cursed Technique), but he’s literally limited only by his sense of self. It takes him a whole 60something chapters to realize he can and should make a difference.

Ah, not sure how much of this is head canon but, as you say in your ask: Just let me inside his head gege please !

Yeah, totally. 

Psychologically-speaking, a child of the same age when Megumi was abandoned tends to internalize what happens to them as it being their fault. 

Imagine mom abandoned you, so did dad, and now even the other woman who was supposed to take care of you left too. It is likely for a child to internalize this abandonment as something that happened to them because they are not lovable or lovable enough. 

To go back to the idea of how his childhood trauma affected him, the way Megumi is written is that his sense of self reflects the unconscious limiting belief that he is not “worth much” as a person.

And come to think of it, it makes me wonder whether Megumi’s resentment towards Toji comes from him being resentful of how he felt unimportant and unlovable enough for his own father to stick around.

When Gojo shows up at his door, Megumi also demonstrated that he had an understanding of how money works, so by learning he had been sold to the Zenin clan, Megumi probably internalized the idea that he’s a burden to others that isn’t “worth much”. 

Boy, little does he know.

The point is that when you grow up with a limiting belief revolving around your sense of self worth, it typically translates into the kind of behavior that Megumi exhibits--that undervaluing of himself which translates into how he plays small, won’t ask for help from others, and is so easily able to throw away his life because he thinks the best he can do when in a pinch is to summon this monster he thinks he can’t control just because no one before him has been to do it.

Megumi is also a character who had to “grow up” too soon to be able to navigate a world he was not psychoemotionally prepared to deal with. I mean... he was 6? 7? Gege messed up on the timeline, but it’s safe to say Megumi was a school-aged child at the time he was abandoned by Tsumiki’s mother. 

When you’re a school aged child, parental figures are supposed to provide the best possible conditions for a child to thrive in so that they can have what is considered proper psychoemotional development. If you think about it, Megumi didn’t have that opportunity to be a child.

And I have to say there’s something so beautiful about Megumi’s childish innocence when it comes to having to make the choice to become a sorcerer to protect Tsumiki. 

It’s almost like, despite having to grow up too soon, his child-like innocence comes through in how confident he is in taking on the burden to become a sorcerer because of what it will mean.

Almost like he had this unfounded over-confidence that he could take on the world if it came down to it...

“...This may sound like I'm trying to make him seem more tragic...”

Not at all.

I wouldn’t say you’re making it seem more tragic than it is at all. Quite the opposite, I’d say Megumi’s backstory is meant to be tragic af. You’re spot on thinking about how sad his circumstances as a child were and how these circumstances affected and shaped his mindset as a person.

And in my opinion, what elevates the tragedy even more, is the idea that (I headcanon) Megumi is resentful and feels hurt about being abandoned by his father, but is unaware that he was actually beloved--probably even considered a blessing to the ones who named him. 

If you think about it, Megumi’s circumstances are the result of a cruel and tragic fate--events and circumstances outside of his control. 

Despite his gender, he was given the name that represents the concept for “blessing” even though it is a kanji normally used for female names--so I like to assume that he was the much expected and much beloved child to a couple that might have been very much in love. ✓ fate.

Mom got sick and died? ✓ fate. 

Dad (who is also known as someone who broke fate) being at the right place at the right time, which ultimately led to his death? ✓ fate. 

Gojo being at the right place at the right time to learn about Toji’s kid, the kid who inherited the Zenin clan’s most prized Cursed Technique? ✓ fate.

While we don’t know what happened to Tsumiki’s mom, I’m going to go ahead and chalk off her disappearance to ✓ fate since it was outside of Megumi’s ability to exercise his free will.

Aaaaaall that to say that I had honestly not thought about it, but I have to say I totally agree that Megumi probably didn’t have the most idyllic childhood even after Gojo took him in. 

Megumi basically grew up knowing he was indebted to someone else (✓ fate). I want to think that one of the reasons why he grew up to be such a cranky teenager who was always getting into trouble was precisely because fighting was how Megumi could exercise his free will in a world where the odds had been staked against him.

But, more importantly, in my opinion, one of Megumi’s themes as a character is overcoming fate--especially your self-fulfilling prophesies.

What I love about how Gege wrote Megumi is that Megumi isn’t defined by the tragedy of his life. 

Megumi isn’t on a revenge plot to get back at anyone, he doesn’t go around moping and bemoaning his fate (like Charlie Bernard from the Culling Game does), and his motivations are not grandiose--he just has a duty to fulfill because he basically sold himself for future labor so that he could protect Tsumiki.

In my Professional Anime Psychology Nerd opinion, I have to say Megumi’s character is so well-written. I also see him as a character-study on how unconscious trauma affects, directs and defines mindset in ways we are unable to understand because we take our reality for granted.

In a nutshell, emotional trauma distorts and shapes our sense of self.

Bringing to consciousness the unconscious stories tangled up in the emotional trauma we’ve experienced is the work of a lifetime--individuation.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record... this is what captivates me so much about Megumi.

The fact that Megumi broke through his own mental barriers in such a dramatic way is something I aspire to do for myself. 

He inspires me.

So there you go.
