But before he could walk far enough away, Pippin and Merry yanked him in, giving enough of the momentum needed to start down hill.

As the cart starts down hill, the wheels are stuck in the ice and immediately come off, and that is how the Hobbits invented bobsledding. Coincidentally, Sam also became the first on call paramedic in the shire.
