TØP Weekly Update #134: Hey Kids (5/15/20)
Tumblr media
Howdy, folks! Last Friday, your boy had the chance to either spend time with his girlfriend that he hadn’t seen in a month due to a global pandemic or spend two hours writing an update on the goings-on in the Twenty One Pilots world. It really wasn’t that hard a choice. I hope ya’ll understand.
But boy if it wasn’t a rough time to sign off, because there was so, so much content to go through. So much that I won’t even be able to list it all here to my usual level of depth. But I’ll do my absolute best to sum up everything that’s gone down the last few weeks.
Zane Lowe on Beats 1. What else is there to say? Two hours of Tyler Joseph talking to one of the most artist-focused interviewers of our time, listening to his favorite artists and going in-depth about his process. From hearing him talk about how Ben Folds’ albums taught him how “the piano returns back the energy you give it” to him showing his pretty deep knowledge the cyclical history of music, there’s a lot to satisfy a guy who gets a little sad every time that Tyler says he barely listens to new music anymore. He talks about going out on a limb with “Jumpsuit” and getting “frustrated” when picking apart Radiohead. He shares really small artists that Zane has never heard of. They watch a clip of his first ever performance. He talks about making formative memories with Death Cab as the soundtrack in the same way that we all did with Twenty One Pilots.
And speaking of new music: Tyler mentioned in this interview (as well as a few other places) that he is actively working on a record right now that will come out “sooner than we planned on releasing a record”. He elaborated that it’s probably not going to be part of the Dema story, emphasizing that our presence at live shows is too important in shaping that and that this will most likely be a sort of ‘in-between’ project. I’d love to go in-depth speculating what that project will look like... but there’s just too much. We’ll save that for a less busy week.
Zane Lowe didn’t give us the only sweet bit of Tyler content from the last few weeks. Tyler dropped into a Zoom chat with the Columbus Music Commission. Tyler’s contribution is great, but the whole 1.5 hour conversation is really worth listening to, as managers Chris Woltman and Brad Gibson have a lot of great stories to share about how they got the band started in the early days, and exec Peter Ganbarg gives great insight into how they got involved. Tyler himself acknowledges that the band doesn’t happen without these men. Really, really fascinating stuff.
One of the most special bits of Tyler content was even more direct: a Q&A he participated in with Mark on Discord Clique. This was Tyler at his most relaxed and honest: sarcastic, funny, hilarious, and genuinely kind. He teased us that we haven’t found everything about Dema yet, and talked about projects like the original “Migraine” video that never saw the light of day. Perhaps most significantly, he finally talks about just what exactly the religion of Vialism is: a worship of self-glorifying suicide. Tyler talks about how “Neon Gravestones” was the only song he received real push-back from the label on because of the content.
There have been more than a few other interviews with the band over the last two weeks. There’s not really much in them that’s new, but there are some good details about diaper changing, and it’s always nice to hear Josh’s voice. This one with Josh is really very good because the interviewer has a mutual friend and goes out of his way “to avoid monotonous questions”- we get info about how he built his first home studio, how he takes care of his body, and- most importantly- what his favorite pizza crust size is. He even calls back when the call drops- what a sweetheart. Over with ol’ pal Stryker, Tyler talks about Rosie’s disinterest in his talent and ranks his own songs.
The chart trajectory of “Level of Concern” has been a little interesting. On the one hand, it reached Alternative #1 faster than any song since “Jumpsuit”. That said, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to become a massive hit, as it’s been falling down the Hot 100 pretty steadily and tons of Covid-related songs from more mainstream artists have been steadily streaming out. But that’s ok- as I’ve said countless times since the release of Trench and will continue to say until the sun burns out, they made their money, now they making their art.
Besides, Trench went Platinum this week, and Blurryface has been on the Billboard 200 for five years. Just saying- they’ll be fine.
Tyler and Jenna have continued to be pretty open about their time at home with Rosie. After sharing a picture of his latest hairstyle, Tyler went nuts on Instagram and recreated old Vines. Josh is in the filmmaking mood too, as he’s been trying to launch his TikTok career with videos about apple cutters or something.
Whew. I know that’s not even close to everything. I know that Tyler’s dad’s been giving a bunch of interviews to Pop Song Professor about old music, and I haven’t even had time to watch them. I know there’s details and morsels from all of those interviews I’ve yet to pick out. Listen, homies, I’ve got papers to write and grade. I’ve given y’all plenty to chew on... until next week.
Power to the local dreamer.

survey from diggitydoo
Have you ever felt a baby kick? Yes, when my mom was pregnant with my brother. What color pants/shorts are you wearing? I’m only wearing a duster gown; no shorts underneath. I just got it last night, actually - my mom wanted to donate clothes to victims of a recent fire incident in Manila and so she asked my sister and I to sort through our closets for clothes we were willing to give away. My sister ended up giving away a comfy-looking duster gown that she never even wore and even smelled brand new to boot. It ended up in my hands, ha. But apart from that we gave away a lot of stuff that aren’t old uniforms or costumes (which is what most people tend to ‘donate’, ugh), so we just hope they end up with people who really need them. When is the last time you did something truly fun, and what was it? Last night I went on our org’s Discord server and we played Jackbox games for around an hour or so. It was my first time to socialize again after around two months and I really, really needed that moment. I even met the org’s newest roster of applicants for this semester, which was neat. :) What was the scariest moment of your life? Men terrorizing me or near-car crashes I’ve had.
Have you ever heard of Leonard Cohen? The name is familiar, but that’s the most I know.
Pancakes or flapjacks? I guess pancakes, since I don’t even know what flapjacks are. What kind of computer are you on? It’s a laptop. Do you eat Chinese food? If so, what's your favorite dish? For sure. Pork buns or minced pork with eggplant. With century egg on the side, yum. What are you usually doing at midnight? Either passed out or desperately trying to sleep because I don’t want to lose any more hours of sleep and risk being cranky for the whole of the next day. Have you ever developed feelings for a friend, but you were already with someone? No. The worst thing that’s happened was being someone’s ball date (and unbeknownst to me, they apparently had feelings for me at the time) while I was already with someone. If so, how did it turn out? He figured it out by himself, which I still feel bad about. But the timing was super off and I just couldn’t find a moment to sit him down and set the record straight...ah well. It was just super complicated at the time. Give me your brief definition of love. My favorite love-related quote is “Love never says ‘I have done enough’” and for the longest time, that has been my guiding principle when it comes to it. Definitely a tad bit cheesy, but telling myself that over and over makes it easier to continue loving the people I care for and be patient with them when they’re being asses. Gab included, then and now. What is the most beautiful part of the human body, male or female? It differs for everyone but I’m a thigh girl through and through. What kind of shoes do you wear? Uh...various ones? I have sneakers, flats, heels, flip-flops, probably a couple more kinds that I can’t place at the moment. What is the worst thing you've ever done when you were really angry? Resorting to physical violence. I was a kid constantly exposed to violence in my old home, and at the time I genuinely thought that’s how most things were settled or pacified. I still feel like shit about it to this day, and my backstory isn’t an excuse at all; but the past is the past and I’ve been trying to make up for it by being a much more gentle angry person in the last few years. Are there any pills you take on a daily basis? If so, what? Nope. Do you like the smell of coconuts? For some reason I can’t stand anything coconut (which is a damn shame considering I’m Filipino) but I love dishes with heaps of coconut milk in them, like curry. That’s the one coconut-related thing I enjoy, but otherwise I’ve never learned to appreciate the taste and smell of buko juice, coconut shavings, coconut pies, and everything else coconut. What is the heaviest you think you can lift? From what my old PE class showed me, around 70 to 80 lbs. Do you take Tums? Idk what that is so I guess I don’t. Have you ever walked on a pier at the beach? I’m not sure if I’ve been to a pier before. I bet it feels wonderful and freeing and I’d love to visit one; but I also can’t keep myself from associating piers with the recurring image of Jennifer Connelly’s character standing on one from Requiem for a Dream. How about under one? No. At what age do you first remember feeling butterflies in your stomach around someone? Not sure if it was 11 or 12, but it was definitely one of those years. Do you feel that way around anyone now? Yeah, if they allowed me to see them. But I’m shut out now so I haven’t had that sensation in a while.
Do you ever talk to yourself or think deep thoughts while on the toilet? No. Do you ever sing to yourself? Sure. I’m sure most people do every once in a while. What is a sound that relaxes you? Ocean waves have never failed. How hard has it been to reach your main goal in life? ‘Main goal’ sounds so overwhelming; I make it a point to avoid one overarching goal and instead make little goals and plans here and there depending on where I am in life. Do you remember the song about hoes in different area codes? Never heard of it. What is your main heritage? Filipino. What kind of pickles do you prefer, if you like pickles? I hate pickles. What kind of cheese do you prefer, if you like cheese? Mozzarella and feta are my faves, but I love cheese and am willing to be adventurous when it comes to it. If you could have a sea creature as a pet, what would you want? Eh, they can stay in the sea where they can actually survive. I don’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to keeping fish as pets. How about a farm animal? Probably pig. So, do you have hoes in different area codes? No, and ew. What is the most annoying song you can think of that came out recently? Haven’t been exposed to a lot of new music lately and the songs I do get to hear on the radio whenever I drive are actually pretty good. This totally doesn’t answer your question but my favorites so far have been Birthday by Disclosure, Kehlani, and Syd; and Plain by Benee, Lily Allen, and Flo Milli. What is a song that you hate to admit you like? Any Kanye song I like. What inspires you to get off your bum and do something productive? Not wanting to go into another downward spiral. Do you ever use Urban Dictionary? Extremely rarely. I only do when there’s a new slang I’m completely unfamiliar with. Do you find the definitions on there to be generally funny or stupid? Stupid for the most part. I find them too immature or vulgar, but that’s one of the points of the website so I guess I’m just not in their target audience lol. What comes to your mind when you hear the word 'transformation'? Uh, the Transformer robots.
What was something you regularly played with as a child? My cousins’ toy soldiers.
Have you ever given in to peer pressure? Eh, a few times. If so, what did you do? I’ve been pulled to drinking sessions here and there when I really shouldn’t be drinking because I had an important test tomorrow or something else was happening the next day that was just as significant. What part of your body have you had the most problems with in your life? Teeth, I’m pretty sure. I’ve had braces, needed a tooth extracted, gotten a cavity, and gone through a severe toothache.
Do a lot of people check you out when you're in public? Idk I never look around because being aware of it would just freak me out and make me feel like I’m naked. What is a good name for a turtle? Would depend on their personality. And this applies to all kinds of pets, at least for me. I don’t decide on their names until I have a good grasp of their attitude. Can you imitate any accents well? If so, which one(s)? Stereotypical Filipino mom and valley girl. Do you like having your ear nibbled on? Sure. What makes a good kisser a good kisser? I’ve only kissed one person so I’m not the best judge for this; but I always like it when my lower lip is tugged or grazed on. How many times a year do you have a family thing? This is a little vague for me. Do you mean get-togethers? Giant-ass reunions? Movie nights? Game nights?  What are the best things to put in a smoothie? I only like one kind of smoothie and it’s sold by a local joint – and I think I’ve already shared this before but that smoothie of theirs that I like has “apple, banana, cinnamon, oats, coco sugar, chia seeds, greens, and soy milk,” according to their menu. So I guess those are the best ingredients for me, ha. Do you ever eat with your eyes closed and just focus on the taste? When I find something extremely delicious, yeah. What do you dislike most about where you live right now? For the most part I can’t wait to get out of suburban residential villages. I’d love to finally experience living in a condo in a super busy and active city. Has anyone ever given you a rose/roses? Yes.
Are you watching your weight? Not really. I’m trying to gain pounds though, if anything. I haven’t eaten much in the last two months. Have you ever become really good friends with someone you found online? I trust y’all with my life, so that’s one. Apart from Tumblr, the best friends I made were probably the people in the AJ/Punk fandom, back when I had a stan account on Twitter. I don’t remember most of their names now and we fizzled out pretty quickly when both parts of the ship left WWE, but I look back on that period with fondness. Those people made high school a lot easier for me. What makes your best friend your best friend? She doesn’t care whether I’m on top of the world with happiness or completely self-destructive and crying my eyes out; she has always been present. Do you have a drunk uncle? *rolls eyes* We don’t wanna open up that can of worms... Do you hear weird noises in your house at night? Nope. What is something you do that is generally more like something the opposite sex does? Based on personal experience and not to come off as sexist, but it’s liking wrestling. I have never met a girl in real life who has even the most remote interest in pro wrestling or can tell me who Hulk Hogan is. And the ones I’ve had discussions with - from shallow/casual to in-depth - have all been guys. Seeing girls who are into wrestling is like finding a rare Pokemon, at least in real life. What is the girliest thing you do, if you're a girl? Idk. What is the coolest tattoo you've ever seen? Probably the spork tattoo of Josh, a crew member from Good Mythical Morning. It’s just a line tattoo. Of a spork. On his arm. But he managed to make it so goddamn fascinating lmao; and apparently, as I learned just now, it has a pretty touching backstory to it too, which makes it a million times cooler. Have you ever created anything artistic that you're proud of? If so, what? I’ve never finished any of the crafts I bought. Never finished a coloring book page much less an entire coloring book, a painting, a gem painting...it’s something I’ll have to bring my butt to do one of these days. I can’t imagine how fulfilling it would feel. Do you only eat the middle of the oreo, if you eat oreos? I eat the whole thing but I honestly find Oreos too sweet and I’ve always much rather preferred Oreo-flavored stuff instead of the actual cookies.
Do you know anyone with a huge ego? My mom. If so, is there anything else about them you actually like? She’s fed me for 22 years and gave me an education, I guess. Though it’s something I appreciate more so than like. Have you ever used a racial slur, even jokingly? Probably as a dumb kid, when historical context wasn’t a thing to me yet. I still wince thinking about it, but I suppose what matters is being better and more responsible moving forward. Do you have any friends who are more like siblings to you? Angela and to some extent Andi.
If so, what about them do you like most? They are both understanding when it comes to me - almost to a fault. What do you like on your hotdogs, if you eat hotdogs? When you say ‘hotdogs’ here, it refers to the sausages itself. The sandwich kind of hotdog isn’t super popular here. What is everyone else in your house doing right now? My siblings are still resting in their rooms; my dad is preparing for work, I think. What is the most money you've ever had at one time? Something like P10,000 or P15,000 when my mom needed me to pay for something in cash. How long do you think it would take you to run a mile? Idk, maybe 10 minutes. I won’t be fast, that’s for sure. Look down. What do you see? My legs and the pillow I’m sitting on. What is a subject that makes you uncomfortable? Right now, probably my failed relationship. I haven’t gotten to the sharing stage yet and remotely thinking about it gets my voice all shaky. What is a subject you can talk on and on about and not get sick of it? Paramore. What kind of mood were you in most of today? It’s only 7:52 AM. My only mood so far is just woke up. Has anyone ever walked in on you naked? Yeah. Because people in this damn house never knock. Tell me an inside joke you have with someone. The word ‘ariba.’ What is the worst thing someone could do to you emotionally? Break my trust. So simple but it packs a punch. What is the worst thing you've ever done to someone emotionally? Idk if I’ve ever been that aggressive. When I want to do something destructive towards someone I always end up asking what it would feel like if the action was done to me, and it’s always been enough to sway me away from doing the thing. How do you feel now about the first person you ever dated? Sad. How about the last person (your last ex)? Same person. What is the best invention ever invented? Air conditioners.
What is something that needs to be invented? Portable air conditioners. What always makes you burp? My burps come randomly. What are you doing tomorrow? It’s my last weekend before my new job, soooooooo...I’ll be bumming around for my last two days of freedom.

lie to me III - Moving Along
Tumblr media
description: part three of my internet bff au featuring ashton irwin // it’s been a week since james left the apartment, liz can’t really take the radio silence and decides to distract herself, but that doesn’t really go according to plan…
writers note: not much to say, again, i just really hope y’all like this chapter :)  wordcount: 1234 (i’m not kidding haha)
++
Thinking 'bout you lots lately Have you been eating breakfast alone like me? Scared of moving on, but you're already gone So if you're moving on, won't you just tell me?
--
Still no text, no sign of life. It’s been a week since their fight and she still doesn’t know if she and James are still together. They’ve had some fights before with him leaving but he would always return home. He always came back the next day. Or he would at least text where he was and when he would come back. But not this time. The complete radio silence drives Liz insane, not knowing what to do with herself and her thoughts, she decides to let loose.
The music flows through her entire body, her bangs stick to her sweaty face and the alcohol in her hand dances dangerously close to the rim of the glass. Liz’s hips sway to the music, her eyes are closed. Lights flash before her eyes, and when she opens them again she looks into the eyes of some dark-haired stranger. Like I Love You comes to an end and the stranger moves closer, his lips grazing her jaw.
“You know, I used to dream about this when I was a little boy. I never thought it would end up this way,” he whispers with a low voice as his rough hands creep up on her hips. The song transitions to a new one and Liz feels his mouth sucking on her earlobe. The feeling makes her lightheaded and a soft moan escapes her lips. She feels the stranger laugh against her head and his fingers stroke her back, the touch hot against her bare skin.
Everything moves too fast, too quick. The stranger has moved his hand to her ass and is now kissing her neck. Liz’s eyes open wide when his teeth graze against her skin, his lips leaving sloppy marks up and down her neck. The movements make her feel like she can’t breathe. She tries to push the stranger away, trying to get some more air and to really understand what’s happening right now.
Maybe coming to a club and drinking her feelings away wasn’t the best plan. Maybe getting involved with some random stranger wasn’t the best plan.
The stranger looks at her and a smirk appears on his lips. He leans in to kiss her and Liz turns her head so his lips miss and end up on her temple. Liz smiles coyly and mouths that she needs a drink. The stranger shrugs and turns around, giving her space to hurry to the bar. After her tongue meets the familiar flavor of the drink, the alcohol leaving a slight burn in her throat, she finally lets out a breath she was holding in. With her fresh drink in hand, she scans the room. Trying to find the stranger to know what area of the bar she has to stay away from.
Suddenly, her eyes notice... him. His hair is the first thing that Liz notices and his face makes her breath hitch. The black shirt makes his shoulders look broad and he’s wearing those black jeans that fit his tights heavenly. His eyes don’t meet hers, thankfully, but he looks down at a drunk blonde. Her arms are all over his, caressing his shoulders and tugging at his hair while he leans in to kiss her. Liz her drink almost slips out of her hand when she sees her ex? boyfriend kiss some random stranger, like it’s something normal. She gulps her drink down, places the glass on the bar, and moves as quickly as she can outside. The nausea almost taking control of her body. Liz plumps down on the first chair she finds and holds her head in her arms, tears silently flowing down her cheeks as she thinks about all the events that occurred this night. She tries to swallow down the vile rising up in her throat and wipes away her tears when she sits back up.
“You okay girl?” A warm voice next to her asks and she looks at the woman sitting next to her, smoking a cigarette. “Not really.” Liz sighs and a small, fake, smile appears on her face. “You want one?” the woman asks, holding out a packet of cigarettes. Liz shrugs, takes one, lights it, and inhales, the familiar taste lingers in her mouth. “Thanks.” She exhales, watching the smoke get carried away by a soft, summer breeze.
“You want to talk about it?” The woman asks and Liz shakes her head. “Just some stupid boyfriend problems I can’t seem to escape.” She mumbles, taking another puff of the cigarette. “I just wish I’ve never met him, it would’ve made my life so much easier.” White puffs of smoke leave her mouth when she talks. “I think I just need to leave this place, or whatever.”
“Go.” The woman replies. “Just… Go. Not to be blunt or anything but, just leave. What’s holding you back?” Liz sighs and closes her eyes. “You’re right.” She mumbles and takes one last drag of the cigarette before flicking it away. “Of course I’m right.” The woman laughs and offers another cigarette. Liz politely declines and closes her eyes, trying to drown away the thoughts and images flashing through her brain.
Liz pays the taxi before stepping out of the vehicle, and hurries to her front door. The cool summer air tickles her bare legs, giving her goosebumps and making her shiver while she looks for her keys. Since the talk with the woman at the bar, Liz sobered up enough and decided it would’ve been a smart plan to just go home, instead of going back in and drinking away the thoughts that came popping up in her head after seeing James kissing another girl.
She throws her keys on the kitchen table and grabs her phone from her purse, walking to the bedroom to charge the damn thing. Whilst waiting for it to go on again, she washes her face, removes the make-up stains and sweat, and changes into her pajamas before returning back to bed. Her phone greets her with several new messages.
                                                                               fletchersthoughts
hi girl,  just checking in on you, haven’t heard from you the last couple of days and i’m worried please just let me know how you are holding up with this break up? i miss u x
Liz sighs and feels the guilt slowly washing over her. Her fingers fly over the touchscreen, trying to write a decent message to send to Fletcher.
queenliz
hi fletch,  i’m sorry i’ve been ignoring you these past couple of days… no.. i’m not quite holding up with everything that has happened, i went out to distract myself and saw james hooking up with some rando. cant seem to shake that image from my head i solemnly wish i’ve never fucking met that guy, all he does is ruin me. will this feeling ever stop fletch? will i ever stop feeling like this?
It takes Fletcher less than 5 seconds to reply.
                                                                               fletchersthoughts
hi babe, ’s alright i just miss you, i’m so sorry about all this  you’ll be apples hun, might take a while but all will be alright in the end
A smile forms on Liz’s lips. Even though she’s been the worst best friend the past couple of days, Fletcher never seems to hold a grudge.
She lays her phone on her bedside table and sinks back into the bed, her eyes heavy with sleep and all kinds of emotions.

When the Sun Sleeps in Canto Bight [2]
Tumblr media
Previous  Entire Work CHAPTER PLAYERS Kylo Ren, Leader of the Knights of Ren Ruby Girard, The Beautiful Singer Poe Dameron, Owner of the Galaxy Bar and Grill Finn Dayo, Owner of the Galaxy Bar and Grill “The Lieutenant”, a drunken patron Evin Chauntaine and the Galaxy Syncopators  CHAPTER CONTENT Flirting; sexual innuendo; alcohol/alcoholism; harassment; violence; stabbing/slashing Word Count: 2,225
Tumblr media
“Poe, what’s going on with your friend?” Finn asked, leaning over the bar. Poe was pouring a drink for a pretty patron. “Who? Kylo?” “Yeah. This is his what, third time coming in? He can’t catch a hint?” Poe laughed. “That’s just him these days. Persistent.” “Persistent or pushy?” Finn asked. “Be easy on him, Finn.” “Because he usually has it hard? Rich kid, doesn’t know how to take ‘no’ for an answer?” “Well, he hasn’t even asked Ruby anything. He’s really a lowkey guy. That tough guy shit is just a show,” Poe said. “Well. Mostly.” “No gal made has got a shade on Sweet Georgia Brown! Two left feet, but oh, so neat has Sweet Georgia Brown! They all sigh, and wanna die for Sweet Georgia Brown!” Ruby lit up the stage with flirty expressions and movements, as Kylo sat alone. He watched her with as much admiration as he did lust. Ruby paid him no mind—or at least she tried not to. But he was taking swigs of his drink, and not taking his eyes off her—looking so sure and so certain of himself, and her. “Did he bring flowers this time?” Poe asked. The corner of Finn’s mouth lifted. “Tulips.” “Ah. The flower of love and joy,” Poe said.
Finn scoffed and turned around to rest his back on the counter to watch the scene play out. Kylo sat at table seven, staring at Ruby like a lion stares at antelope. Ruby was like a sister to Finn, and he just didn’t appreciate a man like Ren vying for her affections. His gauging came to screeching halt though, when a man in a raggedy military uniform staggered toward the stage holding out a dollar bill. “What the hell is he doing?” Poe asked. Ruby looked down at the man with confusion. Without breaking a sweat or missing a note, she just shook her head “no”, and scooted back. But the man leaned in closer, holding out the bill. “I see the Lieutenant has reached his limit already,” Finn said. “Hey, don’t look at me. I haven’t given him a drink all night,” Poe responded. “Hey, Lieutenant! I’m just singin’…” Ruby finally broke. The audience laughed. Everyone but Kylo. He rose from the table and tapped the man on his shoulder. When he turned around, Kylo winced at his breath—hot and whiskey-tinged. “This ain’t a peepshow. Let the lady sing,” he said. “Alright, alright!” The Lieutenant grumbled. “I just wanted to give her a little tip.” The man stumbled away, and Kylo took his seat. Ruby looked down and winked at Kylo. “Shit. You’re right. She is getting soft on him,” Finn said. “Told ya,” Poe grinned. “Flowers and attention, man. Flowers and attention.” Eventually, Kylo gave up his table and sat at the bar. “No bodyguards tonight?” Finn asked. Kylo looked at him with raised eyebrows. “I don’t have bodyguards.” “What’ll it be, Kylo?” Poe asked. “Surprise me.” Finn gave Kylo a once over, then nursed his own drink. Poe began to prepare a martini. “How’s Leia?” Kylo asked Poe. “Leia?! Your mom is great. You askin’ me about your mom?” “I don’t fuckin’ talk to her. You’re her little golden boy.” “Oh, stop it! Are you still on that shit?” Poe asked. “I hate to see…that evening sun go down…hate to see…that evening sun go down…” Finn looked down at his watch, and Kylo looked over his shoulder. “St. Louis Blues” was Ruby’s closing song. “Hey, Poe. Level with me really quick…” Kylo said in a hushed tone. “What’s with Ruby? Does she have a man?” “I don’t know. If she did, she wouldn’t tell me about it,” Poe answered. He slid a martini in Kylo’s direction. “It’s the piano player, ain’t it?” Kylo asked. He took a swig of the martini. “It’s not Evin. I told you, we don’t get into Ruby’s love life.” “Well. I’ll ask her. She’s fucking beautiful, Poe. The most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. Look how she works the fuckin’ crowd...” Kylo stared at Ruby in awe.
“I think maybe the boys intimidated her,” he thought out loud. “Maybe that’s where I fucked up. Comin’ in with some creepy lookin’ guys around me.” “It’s probably not just the boys,” Finn inserted. “She’s probably not into any kind of street thugs.” “Finn, relax,” said Poe. Kylo leaned back and rested his arm on the back of his barstool to get a good look at Finn. “Are you her brother?” “No. I’m a friend who cares about her,” Finn responded. “How admirable,” Kylo said. He took a sip of his martini. “But I don’t need you to speak for her.” “I don’t remember asking you what you needed,” said Finn. Kylo stood up. “Look. Do you wanna go outside or somethin’?” “We can,” Finn said, also rising. “Hey!” Poe yelled. People near the bar stopped talking and stared, and Poe smiled. He hushed himself. “Both you sit the fuck down.” Kylo smirked teasingly at Finn and sat down. Finn exhaled and did the same. “Kylo, Finn is right. Ruby is trying to be a star. She probably wouldn’t want to get into any trouble messing with a guy like you. You know that,” Poe said. “Exactly,” Finn agreed. “And Finn…” “What?!” “You know that Ruby don’t like you or nobody else speakin’ for her. Ruby’s an adult. If she wants Kylo to hit the bricks, she’ll tell him to hit the fuckin’ bricks.” Ruby finished her song to applause and Finn shrugged. “Yeah, I guess so,” he said, defeated. He pulled himself away from the bar and walked up onto the stage, giving Ruby a hug and stepping to the mic. “Ruby Girard, everyone!” he said amid applause. Ruby bowed, waved and stepped off the stage – dressed in gold tonight. She walked to the bar and sat beside Kylo. “Hey, Poe—didn’t you two ban the Lieutenant?” Ruby asked. “No, we gave him a warning. But he’s about to get banned,” Poe answered. “The usual?” Ruby looked Kylo up and down. She paid close attention to how his Adam’s apple moved when he took a sip of his drink. “Whatever this big fly here wants to buy me.” “Fly?” Kylo asked, his eyebrows knitting together.  “Mmm-hmm. You know how flies are. Once they get in your house you can’t get rid of ‘em,” she said with a smirk. “Hmph,” Kylo grunted. “Well, that’s what flies do when they see something they want to eat.” Ruby’s eyebrows raised. “Great stars, Kylo…” Poe mumbled. He shook his head. “How dare you speak so foully to me? I am a lady, Mr. Ren,” Ruby said, straightening her spine. “Not when I’m through with you, babygirl,” Kylo shot back. Ruby wanted to be offended. Her jaw dropped. But all she could do was laugh, and that she did. She pressed her lips together and air staggered out of her nostrils. Dimples formed in her cheeks, and Kylo chuckled over the rim of his martini glass. “The sweetest cocktail you can make, Poe,” Kylo ordered. He looked at Ruby. “For the lady.” “Coming right up!” Poe said with a smile. He pulled out a large glass and got to work. Suddenly, Ruby felt overwhelming heat beside her, and the even more overwhelming smell of whiskey nearly knocked her out. “Miss Girard, why do you always reject me?” The Lieutenant asked. Kylo glared at him and chewed on the inside of his mouth. “I don’t reject you, Lieutenant,” Ruby said, scooting away from him. “You just do a terrible job of approaching women.” “You wake up sloshed, don’t you Lieutenant?” Poe asked. “The Lieutenant” grumbled something insensible and leaned in close to Ruby. Then, he threw his arm around her. “Baby, can I buy you a drink?” Kylo grabbed the man’s hand and snatched it down. “You need to watch yourself, man.” The Lieutenant nearly fell from the force of Kylo’s hand removal. He stood straight up and walked around to stand behind Kylo. “I didn’t know the lady was taken, but you got no right to put your hands on me!” Kylo stood up and towered over the man. “She ain’t taken, but you ain’t got no right puttin’ your hands on her. You need to catch a fucking cab before I knock you out.” Just as Kylo sat back down, The Lieutenant shoved him. Well, he tried to. Kylo was a brick wall, unfazed by the man’s inferior push. “Whoa Lieutenant, you’ve gotta go!” Poe shouted. He put down the bottle of liquor and started walking around the bar, but he was just too slow. Kylo turned around and backhanded The Lieutenant—sending him flying to the floor. He started toward him, but Ruby got in front of him.
“It’s alright, honey, leave it alone...” Ruby pleaded. But Kylo heard nothing and barely saw her. All he saw was red. As though she were a rag doll, Kylo moved Ruby out of his way and banged the toe of his shoe into the man’s body – in any space he could get to.
Everyone turned to look at the commotion and Finn brought his nightly monologue to a halt, and rushed down from the stage. Ruby stepped backward until her back hit the wall, watching Poe and Finn pull Kylo away from the screaming Lieutenant. “That’s enough, Ben! That’s enough!” Poe said. He grabbed Kylo by the chin and pulled his face to his, staring him in the eyes. Kylo snapped out of his haze at the sight of Poe’s big, brown irises. Just as he’d relaxed, Finn let go of his arm and helped The Lieutenant up. Out of nowhere, jazz music began to play. “Are y’all ready to jam tonight?!” Evin, the piano player and bandleader said into the mic. No one responded, but he directed his band into a lively number, anyway. “Sir, you need to leave,” Poe said. “And what about him?!” The Lieutenant yelled. “You started it, man. Get out of here!” Poe shot back. The Lieutenant growled and shook Finn’s arm away. “I fought for this fucking planet and this is the thanks I get?” he asked, stumbling. He pointed directly at Kylo. “I’ve got something for you!” Kylo laughed. “Yeah, alright.” He turned around and sat back down at the bar and The Lieutenant staggered out of the grill. Finn and Poe shook their heads and caught their breath. “We’re sorry ladies and gentlemen!” Poe said, raising his hands. “Please enjoy the rest of your dinner and your drinks.”
Finn and Poe mouthed “thank you’s” to Evin, and Evin winked, and turned his back to the crowd.  Kylo finished off his martini and looked over at Ruby, who was still stuck to the wall near end of the bar--staring at him with wide eyes. Kylo tilted his head to the side, gesturing for Ruby to come to him. She raised doubtful eyebrows at him in response. Finn returned to his seat and watched the nonverbal exchange between Kylo and Ruby. Poe walked back around to the back of the bar. “Come here,” he said out loud to her. Ruby’s tongue darted out to moisturize her bottom lip, and she took the empty seat beside Kylo. The two of them drank and chatted for about an hour, until Ruby decided it was time for her to retire. She said goodbye to Finn, Poe, and the rest of the staff, and let Kylo escort out of the restaurant. He held the door opened for her and she stepped out.
“Again, thank you for helping me with The Lieutenant,” Ruby said. “But I don’t want you hitting anybody else.” “I can’t make you no promises, sweetheart,” Kylo said, bending his arm for Ruby. She hooked hers around it. “Is he a real Lieutenant?” “I think so. Either that or he stole that uniform off a corpse,” Ruby joked. The two started down the sidewalk. “I’m drivin’ you home,” he said. “I ain’t walkin’ you to no fuckin’ subw—” Suddenly, The Lieutenant came staggering up to them at a fast pace. Kylo pushed Ruby out of the way just in time to see a quick flash of metal flying in front of him. Ruby clutched her fake pearls and gripped as much of the brick wall behind her as she could--her only refuge. Kylo swung as fast and hard as he could—sending The Lieutenant tumbling to the concrete. “You fuckin’ bitch! Go home!” he shouted down at the balled up heap of flesh. A crowd gathered around, and Ruby stood in front of Kylo before The Lieutenant could find what little footing he had. “Please, let’s go, Mr. Ren…” she said, trying to hold him back. Her eyes widened when she got a look at his face. There was a long gash on his right cheek, and blood was dripping down to his collar. But he was still trying to go for The Lieutenant, as two other men helped him up. “I told you, you little punk!” The Lieutenant shouted. Kylo growled and yanked Ruby out of his way. But she jumped back in front of him. “Kylo!” she shouted. She grabbed his chin and his eyes snapped into the line of hers - brown orbs that were wide with fear. “You’re hurt! We need to go!”

AN: TEN YEARS LATER I finally have an update!!! sorry i suck, school has been kicking my booty lately and i’ve been uninspired. for this one, i had them play songs from the new album simply because i feel like even if the guys weren’t famous, they’d still pursue music as a hobby and it’s fun to write haha. when they sing ‘Ghost of You’ in this chapter, I was picturing the video going around right now where Cal looks like he might fcking SOB ugh that video hurts my heart. and i used their apple music acoustic performance as inspo as well :) anyways, i’ll stop rambling!!! feedback is always always welcome and appreciated, hope y’all enjoy xxx
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
You were sat at your desk, working on a study guide for an exam you had next week when Britt burst into your room, flopping on your bed with a groan. You set your pen down, turning in your chair to quirk a brow at your best friend as you giggled.
“Rough day?” you ask, Brittany’s face buried into your comforter. She lets out another loud, muffled groan.
“I totally bombed that exam,” she whined, picking her head up to rest her cheek on the bed. She jutted her lip out, pouting.
“I doubt that. You always say you do poorly on an exam and end up acing it,” you tell her, rolling your eyes playfully in the process.
“I’m serious this time, Y/N! I really think I failed,” she countered, and you gave her a sympathetic look.
“Wanna go with me to a gig Calum’s playing with his friends tonight? It’ll make you feel better,” you ask her, wanting your best friend to cheer up. She purses her lips, thinking it over.
“Yeah, if I can get my homework done, I’ll go with,” she tells you, making you smile.
“Better get started!” you tell her, flinging your pen at her and giggling when it hit her right in the middle of her forehead.
“Hey!” she yells, whipping it back in your direction and missing entirely, making you laugh even harder. You turn to grab the pen from where it landed on your desk when your phone lights up with a notification.
“Um,” you say as you read it, surprise and unease settling in your stomach.
“What?” Brittany asks, sitting up on your bed now.
“Cal’s ex just requested to follow me on Instagram,” you muttered, your brows furrowing as you clicked on the notification and it took you to Nicki’s profile. It was filled with pictures of her, her friends, and if you scrolled enough, pictures of her and Calum.
“Seriously? Let me see,” your roommate insisted, holding her hand out. You tossed her your phone, bringing your pen to your lips and chewing on the end lightly.
“That’s so weird… does she wear extensions?!” Brittany asks as she scrolls, making you laugh.
“I don’t know, I’ve never paid much attention to her. She’s beautiful regardless,” you sigh, thinking back to the party when she had lead Calum away from you. She really was beautiful- perfect dark hair, sparkling green eyes, clear tan skin, and a smile that was bright enough to blind you.
“Don’t do that,” Brittany warned, looking up from your phone to meet your gaze.
“Do what?” you ask innocently.
“Put yourself down! Compare yourself to her! You’re beautiful too, inside and out, which is more than she can say,” your best friend quips, making you smile. Your phone began to vibrate in Britt’s hand, and her eyes widened and she smiled at you as she read the caller ID.
“It’s your boyyyy,” she sang, tossing you the phone back. You felt your face heat as you accepted the call, bringing the cool glass screen of your phone to your ear.
“Hello?” you breathed.
“Hi, doll,” Calum’s smooth voice sounded down the phone, making you shiver.
“Hi,” you respond, unable to fight back your smile as Brittany mirrored it and rolled her eyes playfully.
“How was your day?” he asks, and you can hear shuffling in the background.
“It was good, nothing too special after you dropped me off,” you tell him, fiddling with your pen.
“That’s because I wasn’t there,” he tells you, and you can practically hear the smirk in his voice.
“You’re not wrong,” you respond, making him laugh.
“You still coming tonight?” he asks.
“Of course. I’m bringing my roommate Brittany, too,” you meet Britt’s eyes and wiggle your eyebrows. She tosses a pillow at you and you can’t help but laugh.
“We’ll try not to suck so we make it worth your guys’ while,” he jokes, making you roll your eyes.
Brittany catches your eye and mouths ‘tell him about Nicki’. You press your lips together and shake your head, unsure if you should bring it up. It probably isn’t even that big of a deal and you’re overthinking it.
“Is everything okay?” Calum asks, interrupting your thoughts.
“Hmm? Yeah, everything’s fine,” you shrug, waving off Brittany.
“You sure? It doesn’t sound like it.”
Brittany gives you a look and you sigh, relenting.
“It’s not a big deal. Nicki just requested to follow me on Instagram is all,” you say, unsure of how the conversation will go now.
“Well that didn’t take long. Jesus,” he sighs, and you wonder if he’s running his fingers through his hair like you think he is.
“I just thought it was odd,” you twist a piece of hair, chewing on your lip.
“We were only together for like three months, I don’t understand why she’s doing this. Just ignore her,” he assures you, and you nod.
“I’m not that worried,” you chuckle.
“You have no reason to be. Drinks on me tonight,” he quickly changes the subject.
“It’s Monday!” you squeak, and he laughs.
“One drink won’t hurt anything. I’ll see you soon, doll,” he tells you, and you feel your cheeks heat.
“Can’t wait,” you tell him, exchanging goodbyes before hanging up.
“You’ve got it so bad,” Brittany teases as you turn back to your studying. Like usual, your best friend wasn’t wrong.
“This bar is so cool!” your roommate exclaims, making you smile. Your heart swells as she takes everything in, happiness blooming in your chest at the fact your best friend seems to enjoy this place as much as you do.
“Y/N!” a voice calls, and you look to see Mickie behind the bar, grinning at you.
“Mickie, hey!” you greet her, walking up to the bar.
“Here to see Cal?” she asks with a knowing smile. You nod, rolling your lips into your mouth to hide your smile. She laughs as she begins to make two drinks.
“They’re finishing setting up, I think he might be in the back,” she tells you, pushing the drinks toward you and your roommate.
“How much?” you ask, pulling out your wallet. Mickie tsk’s.
“I was instructed to put them on his tab,” she tells you, winking. You roll your eyes playfully, as you should’ve known.
“Mickie, this is my roommate Brittany. Brittany, this is Mickie. She owns the bar,” you introduce your roommate as she takes a sip of her drink.
“I love this place,” Brittany praises, making Mickie smile.
“It’s nice to meet you. You girls go ahead and take a seat, they’ll probably start soon,” Mickie nods towards one of the tables closest to the stage. You thank her and make your way over to the table. You take a sip of your drink, the fruity flavor dancing on your tastebuds.
“How many guys are in the band?” Brittany asks, examining the set up on stage.
“It’s Cal and his three roommates. I haven’t met Michael yet,” you tell her, checking the time on your phone. Ten more minutes.
“Hey,” a familiar voice calls, and you look up and instantly feel butterflies being released in your stomach. Calum jogs over to your table, looking absolutely delicious in a white button down with black pinstripes tucked into black pants. His hair looks incredibly soft, his curls bouncing on his forehead and all you want to do is run your fingers through it.
“Hi,” you breathe, standing to greet him. He gives you a soft kiss before pulling you into his chest.
“Thanks for comin’,” he squeezes you.
“Wouldn’t miss it. Cal, this is my roommate, Brittany,” you reluctantly pull away to introduce him to your best friend. Brittany smiles and gives a little wave from where she sits.
“Heard a lot about you,” Brittany teases, making you groan inwardly. Calum smiles, which makes you slightly okay with your roommate’s comment if it meant seeing that shy smile of his. Calum glances back from where he had came and turns back to you.
“Alright, I’ve gotta get ready to go on. Enjoy the show,” he winks at you, kissing your cheek before waving to Brittany and jogging back from where he came.
“Well, he’s yummy,” Brittany says, making you laugh as you sit down. You notice she’s just about sucked her drink dry, and she doesn’t drink often. You wonder if she’s already feeling a little buzzed.
“I know- “
“Is this seat taken?” a high pitched voice asks from behind you. You feel your blood turn to ice as you remember the last time you heard that voice. You turn to see Nicki, looking as beautiful as ever in a cream sweater dress and over the knee brown boots, her hair curled into glossy waves and her makeup subtle but stunning. You instantly feel insecure in your simple outfit, having swapped out your oversized flannel for an oversized sweater but opting to keep the leggings and moccasins. You glance at Brittany, her eyes wide as you look back to Calum’s supermodel ex standing in front of you.
“No, it isn’t,” you answer.
“Mind if I sit?” she asks, giving you her megawatt smile. You swallow before shaking your head, gesturing for her to sit next to you. You bristle as she joins the two of you; you were never one to be rude, and your kindness was often taken advantage of by people who didn’t deserve it. You had a feeling this was going to be another one of those times.
Nicki pulls out the chair next to you, settling in as Brittany shoots you a look as if to say, “are you crazy?!” You roll your lips into your mouth as you shrug slightly.
“Is this your first show?” Nicki asks, resting her left arm on the table as she places her chin in her right hand. She cocks her head a bit, her eyes searching your face and you instantly wish you’d put a little more effort into your appearance tonight, feeling as though she was judging you.
“Yeah, it is,” you respond, taking a long sip of your drink. If you had to deal with intrusive questions from Nicki all night, you were gonna need all the alcohol you could get.
“I remember my first show last year. They’ve come a long way,” she says dreamily, glancing to look over at the stage. Last year? Calum said they’d only dated for three months. Something about it didn’t sit right with you, but you kept your mouth shut.
“What made you come out tonight?” Brittany asks bluntly, your head whipping around to stare at her, your eyes feeling like they might pop out of their head. Your best friend has an unimpressed look on her face, not bothering to try and hide the fact that she’s annoyed that Nicki showed up. If Nicki noticed Britt’s bitchy tone, she didn’t comment on it.
“Oh, I come to their gigs every week! Bit of a tradition,” she smiles cheekily as you feel your gut twist. You try to not let it show that she’s getting to you, because you know that’s exactly what she wants, so you just nod as you fiddle with the straw in your drink.
Finally, Mickie steps onto the stage in front of you, taking the mic out of the stand and introducing the boys to the crowd that has gathered. You clap as the guys make their entrance, taking their spots on stage before thanking Mickie. Calum’s eyes immediately find you once he’s settled before scanning over to the harpie sitting to your right. His eyes widen just enough for you to notice as they flick back to you. You purse your lips, giving him a small nod before finishing your drink and standing to get another one.
Mickie has one ready for you as you approach the bar, seemingly reading your mind. She gives you a sympathetic look as you exchange your empty glass for the new one.
“I never liked her,” she mutters under her breath, making you smile but it wasn’t enough to help your sour mood. You sigh, Mickie mouthing ‘good luck’ before you turn and make your way back to your table. Luke has just finished his introduction as you sit down once more, glancing at you, then Nicki, then back to you again. It looks as if he’s struggling to hide his smirk as he winks at you, tucking some of his blonde curls behind his ears.
“We’re gonna start out a little slow tonight, this is ‘Ghost of You’,” he continues, nodding to the boy on his right who must be Michael, the only one you haven’t met yet. Michael nods as he starts strumming the opening chords, looking down at his guitar in concentration as he does so. You’re instantly intrigued, the chords almost sounding like a lullaby.
“Here I am wakin’ up, still can’t sleep on your side,” Luke starts, and you feel your eyebrows shoot up. He’s good. You look over to Calum, and find that he’s already looking at you. He smiles, a sight that brings a smile to your own face. He turns to play the keyboard to his left, and you inhale sharply. This song is so hauntingly beautiful, and even though you hadn’t heard any other song from them, you knew this was going to be your favorite.
Calum steps towards the mic and opens his mouth to sing, strumming his bass, the chords almost too low for you to hear.
“Cleanin’ up today, found that old Zeppelin shirt,” his low voice sings, a slight rasp to his words. His eyes squeezed shut as he sang, passion clear on his features as his long fingers strummed the strings of his bass. You felt your heart swell with pride and appreciation and pure awe. You really had had no idea what the boy who sat next to you in English class and brought you hot chocolate was capable of. And now that you had even the smallest inkling, you never wanted to stop learning about him.
“He’s good,” you hear Brittany murmur, your best friend leaning over to speak softly into your ear. You smile as you look at her and nod.
You listened to the lyrics, the song making your heart break at its painful message. The instruments and vocals blended together almost magically, and you couldn’t believe you were lucky enough to sit in this small bar and listen to this beautiful song performed by these talented men.
The song slowed and before you knew it, it was over. You sat stunned before you joined the crowd in applause, your cheeks hurting from the smile on your face. Calum found you in the crowd, his face mirroring yours as he took in your expression. ‘Wow’ you mouthed to him from where you sat, and the smile that took over his face was one you wanted to see every day; it was shy and proud at the same time. He pushes his curls off from where they had fallen onto his forehead, stepping towards the mic.
“Just wanna say thanks to everyone for comin’ out tonight. Your support means a lot to us,” he says, looking at you the entire time. You feel your face heat as Britt nudges you, making you smile.
“Continuing with the slow songs, we’re gonna slow this one down tonight. Hope you guys like it, this is ‘Want You Back’,” he continues. Michael has swapped his electric guitar for an acoustic, and he starts just a split second before Luke does.
“Oh, this is my favorite,” Nicki says from beside you, and you jump slightly. You’d almost forgotten she was there. You turn to her, acknowledging her comment as you listen to the lyrics of this new song. Just like the title suggests, it’s about wanting someone back after they’d left, a message you felt uneasy about given your current situation. Nicki smirks at you as you realize what she’s talking about.
“They wrote this one after Cal and I broke up the first time,” she murmurs, the music now falling upon deaf ears as you feel as though she’s just slapped you. Your lips part at this new information, and you turn from her to stare at your drink in front of you.
“You know even when I say I moved on, you know even though I know that you’re gone, all I think about is where I went wrong, yeah I still dream for you,” Luke sings, Calum’s voice harmonizing.
Suddenly, it felt like the walls were closing in on you. How could you be so stupid? You were just a rebound; you could never compete with a girl like Nicki. This song, along with Nicki’s comment, was all the proof you needed. You felt as though you might pass out, your surroundings blurring together, and you needed to get out of there.
You stand abruptly, surprising Brittany as you push away from the table.
“Y/N?!” she calls after you, but you wave her off, stumbling outside for some fresh air.
The cool wind hits your face as you slide down the side of the building, settling on the ground and resting your forehead on your knees. You take in a couple of deep breaths, trying to calm your racing heart and mind.
Brittany bursts through the door, looking around wildly before spotting you to her left.
“What the hell did she say to you?” she almost growls, taking you aback as your best friend was normally very soft spoken.
“Nothing that I didn’t already know,” you sighed, hanging your head again. She huffs as she sits next to you, wrapping an arm around you and pulling you to her side.
“Can we go home?” you murmur. You feel Brittany nodding before she stands and hauls you to your feet. She hands you her car keys, as she’s clearly too buzzed to drive, and pulls you close again as you walk to the parking lot behind the bar.
Tonight was a perfect example of why you were a homebody.

Catch the New [Emotional] Wave
This week has been a godsend for music that makes you feel. Whether you’ve been looking for a song that makes you cry, a song with a story behind it, or mellow tunes with hidden messages, you’re in for a treat.
We begin with a highly anticipated EP from an up-and-coming solo artist. He’s performed a few shows around the west coast and has released quite a few amazing singles. Just last year he had his first single released on Apple Music and Spotify, and now he’s finally returned with more of what we’ve been waiting for.
Who is he?
It’s none other than Romeo! Yes, he’s finally back with new music, and boy was it worth the wait.
Romeo (formally Brandon Sidney) released Part 1 of his EP, BLDG 6, on May 22, after days of teasers and months of posts on Instagram of him in the studio. For all that teasing many fans were expecting more than two songs on the tracklist. Rest assured, those two songs hold enough content to supply a full LP.
Tumblr media
The EP begins with a song called “Heartbeat”. The song starts off with an eight-bar guitar introduction that continues throughout the song. Romeo’s sultry voices enters to sing to the girl he’s had on his mind for a minute. The lyrics speak of his relationship with a female who doesn’t seem to notice how special she is to him.
The song is extremely catchy and emotional, yet smooth and sophisticated. The lack of heavy electronics makes the message of a forbidden desire clearer and more relatable. It’s the prefect song for those moments when you need to relax with a glass of wine and reminisce on past loves.
The second song, “Too Much, Too Fast,”  stays with the slow, emotional, and yet sensual theme that “Heartbeat” set up. The song tells the story of a relationship that was “too much, too fast”. All the love and care that was there at the start faded into contempt, missed calls, and memories of what once was.
The entire EP is a tribute to an ex, and the memories that were shared. From first meetings to first dates and the solemn day when it ended. The lyrics, the instrumentals, and the production are to be acknowledged for what they bring to the project as a whole. Feel free to check out the EP for yourself and get into your feels. It can be found on Apple Music and Spotify.
Later in the week, another stellar artist released a song that was nothing short of amazing.
A young artist by the name of Alec Benjamin took all social media outlets by a storm on Thursday, May 24, with the release of his newest single, “Let Me Down Slowly”. The song has gotten major support from well-known names such as Kellin Quinn (Sleeping With Sirens) and Tyler Carter (Issues).
Tumblr media
The song is upbeat and undeniably catchy (I listened to it once before I started writing this and now it won’t leave my thoughts) despite the lyrical content. In the song, Alec is pleading with his love interest who has no intention of staying to end the relationship in the least heartbreaking way possible. He ”once was a man with dignity and grace,” and a life-shattering break up would destroy that demeanor.
The song has gotten national recognition from different sites online, but if you’d like to check out what all the hype is about, you can listen to the amazing track on Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube.
The third release of this post goes to one of our new favorite artists out of San Diego. In March he released “Before I Wilt,” and now he’s back with a new single entitled “Clouds”.
Tumblr media
Yes, Traces is back with another beautiful and emotional masterpiece. The recent college graduate unleashed this work to the world on May 25 after posting a description of the song on his Twitter and Instagram days before:
“It is one of the more personal and transparent songs I’ve released so needless to say I’m nervous about it. The song brought me comfort and understanding of the headspace I was in so I hope it can do the same for you.”
The song is different from anything we’ve heard from Traces before. Co-written with Curtis Peoples and Colin CreeV, “Clouds” is set to the softer tone of a piano. From the first line you can hear the vulnerability that was foreshadowed days before. The slow tempo, piano accompaniment, and our featured singer’s raspy and powerful voice give the listener a glimpse into the headspace he was in.
The song is somber, but it is indeed comforting. If you’re looking for a song to help you express your feelings, if you’re sad and looking for a sad song, or if you’re looking for a track to decipher, then this is the song for you! I have described some of Traces’ songs as “hauntingly beautiful,” and this song is no exception. Stream it on Spotify or Apple Music and get lost in all it has to offer.
This last week was great for new music, and if you haven’t heard of any of these guys then I suggest you click on the links and give these songs a listen. You won’t regret it.
As always, go out and support good music. Peace and love, y’all!

Track 3: “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”
Y/n stood back to admire their handiwork. She’d lost count of how many dozens of strings of Christmas lights zigzagged overhead and the number of napkin swans she’d folded in the last hour, but it was finally finished and the scene was beautiful.
Twenty-five round tables were arranged neatly around the room; each one draped in white gauzy fabric that nearly touched the floor. The center of every table was adorned with an array of flickering tea lights, sparkly crystals, and tall, fragrant hydrangea bouquets all arranged neatly around beautifully framed 8 x 10 photos of the happy couple.
Three rectangular tables lined the front of the room with more white gauzy fabric and shorter versions of the hydrangea bouquets covering their surface. Fat, white, twine-wrapped candles cast a soft glow on the soft white petals of the flowers.
A small part of her heart ached as she surveyed the community center. Y/n felt as though she’d stepped right into a bridal magazine, but this wasn’t her fairytale, and lately she was beginning to wonder if she would ever get the chance to see her happily ever after.
“Great work, y/n!” Jo smiled warmly at her cousin before glancing down at her clipboard and reviewing every detail to make sure nothing had been missed. “I think we should have about 10 minutes before guests begin to arrive, and...oh no!” Jo’s voice rose in panic, making y/n jump.
“What’s wrong?”
“Lisa will kill me if I don’t put up the banners she added last minute!” Jo practically ran toward her office with y/n following close behind. Jo pulled a small, gold key from her pocket and unlocked the bottom drawer of her desk. She reached in and removed what appeared to be several banners made from burlap and canvas and thrust them into y/n’s waiting arms.
“Can you please hang these for me? The one that says ‘FOREVER’ needs to be stretched across the front of the bride and groom’s table. There are two that say ‘Lisa + Dean’ that you can just find spots for. Thank you y/n, you’re a lifesaver! I’m so glad to have you here!”
“Of course. I’m happy to help!”
Y/n smiled and hurried back to the reception hall. Just as she was hanging the last banner above the guestbook, Jo walked in, her face white as ash and her eyes glittered with tears.
“Jo, what happened? Is everything ok?”
“Sam just called me. Lisa never showed. Dean is absolutely devastated.” Jo shook her head and sniffed. “I’m just shocked. I want to wring that bitch’s neck.”
“That’s awful. Poor Dean. He seemed so happy, but I never met her.” Y/n chewed on her bottom lip as she glanced around. Her eyes grew wide. “What about all the decorations? And the food?”
“Sam said that Dean told everyone to come eat so the food doesn’t go to waste.”
“You don’t think people will actually still show up, do you?” Y/n screwed up her face.
“I know they will. So we still…” Jo’s words were cut off as the doors to the community center flung open and people began pouring in. Jo looked at her cousin and raised her eyebrows before plastering a smile on her face and turning to greet the guests.
The tables began to fill up and y/n set to work, pouring glasses of iced tea and water and pointing guests in the direction of the cash bar, where her Aunt Ellen was just beginning to set up and take drink orders.
Y/n looked up to see a very tall man in a sharp tuxedo striding toward Jo. He bent low, offering her a hug, before straightening up and pushing his long hair from his face. A strikingly beautiful woman with wavy blonde hair approached the two, also hugging Jo before winding her arm around the tall man’s waist. Y/n continued her way around the table, absently splashing water in the lap of a particularly snide woman as she eyed them and not feeling too badly about it. After a few more pointed nods, the handsome couple disappeared and y/n continued making her rounds until every glass was full.
The rumors of what had happened varied greatly from table to table, but y/n did her best to ignore them. She was surprised to find herself becoming more and more irritated every time she heard the whisper of Dean’s name over the light din of conversation at dinner.
Just as people were finishing up the last of their meals and y/n began clearing their plates, Chuck’s voice boomed through the speakers, drawing everyone’s attention. She breathed a sigh of relief as the room grew quiet.
“Good evening everyone. Dean asked us to go ahead and come out tonight to play for you. Please remember that he’s a vital part of our community and he’s going through a difficult time. We need to support him and love him and one way we can all help is to not spread rumors about what happened today. Just keep that in mind as you all enjoy your evening.”
People glanced around the room guiltily at each other as y/n nodded enthusiastically. Dean was lucky to have such wonderful people around him. The awkward silence melted away as the band started playing.
Y/n noted that, while the band sounded great, Dean’s absence was definitely palpable. Few people in the crowd seemed to notice, however, as they made their way to the dance floor. As the tables were cleared and the crowd began to thin, y/n found herself making a conscious effort to keep her smile in place. The thought of Dean sitting alone, devastated and brokenhearted while these people enjoyed a party celebrating the life he and Lisa would now likely never have - it was enough to make her feel sick.
She caught Jo’s eye from across the room and motioned toward the back door. Jo nodded just as the upbeat music faded into a slow, dreamy ballad and y/n slipped out into the night air. The cool breeze felt like heaven against her flushed skin. As she took a few deep breaths, she chided herself for being so agitated. She hardly knew Dean, but her heart hurt for him.
After several minutes of enjoying the stillness and quiet, she decided it was about time to head back inside. Several couples swayed from side to side as the band played another sweet love song. Y/n busied herself collecting the used napkins and placing them into the laundry bin.
She hardly noticed the gentle murmur of voices, but as the music stopped suddenly and a loud buzz of feedback echoed throughout the room, she turned toward the sound. She was surprised to see Dean, microphone in one hand, flask in the other, wobbling unsteadily at the front of the stage. It was hard to make out many details from this distance, but she felt her heart rise to her throat as he stared silently into the shocked crowd.
“Well hello, fine citizens of Chapel Hill. How are y’all doin’ tonight? Better than I am, I s’ppose.” Dean’s words slurred together as his rich, deep voice boomed from the speakers. “Oh come on. Lighten up. Haven’t you ever seen a man get left at the altar before? No? First time?” The silence grew uncomfortable. “Well, I don’t want to keep y’ll from enjoying your lovely ev’nin’. But I’d like to propose a toast. To Lisa, that traitorous, lying, selfish bitch. May she rot in the depths of hell. Cheers.”
Dean raised his flask in the air, swaying slightly before bringing it to his lips. The alcohol ran down his chin, his adam’s apple bobbing as he drank. When he’d drained it, he spiked it on the floor like a football and thrust the microphone towards Chuck. The band quickly began playing, an obvious effort to shift the attention from the stumbling man weaving through the sea of people.
Before she had time to think about what she was doing, y/n ran toward Dean, reaching out a hand to steady him as he tripped over nothing. When he was standing upright again, he looked at her hand on his arm before rolling his gaze up to hers. Up close, y/n could see that his eyes were bloodshot, the skin underneath puffy and raw from crying.
Just as she opened her mouth, though unsure what to say, the tall man she’d seen earlier appeared, placing his hands on each of Dean’s shoulders and ducking his head to meet his gaze.
“Whoa, there, big guy. How about we get you home,” he said, his eyebrows creased with obvious worry for the shorter man. He glanced back toward the dance floor and y/n followed his eyeline. The pretty blonde woman she’d seen him with earlier watched awkwardly as she dodged the shimmies and shakes of the oblivious people around her.
“I don’t mind to drive him,” y/n blurted out, not sure why. It wasn’t like she was working or had responsibilities or anything.
The tall man glanced back at the woman and smiled gratefully back at y/n. “That would be great. Thank you. I’m Dean’s brother, Sam, by the way.” He grabbed a napkin off a nearby table and scribbled down his address and thanked her again before heading back toward the woman.
Y/n turned back to Dean. “Hey Dean. Remember me?”
He nodded and then scrunched his eyes shut as though the action made his head hurt.
“Good. Good. Listen, how did you get here?”
Dean shoved a hand into his pocket, rocking back on his heels once before pulling out his keys and jingling them at her.
“What’da you say I give you a ride home, hm?” She tried smiling at him, but wasn’t sure she was convincing anyone. Before he could say no, she plucked the keys from his hand. His eyebrows furrowed and he gaped at her.
She waved at Jo again, who nodded and smiled gratefully at y/n, and then led Dean out to his sharp, black, muscle car. Y/n wasn’t much into cars, but she could tell this was a special one and she was excited to slide into the front seat.
Dean fumbled hopelessly at the doorknob, before y/n reached across and pulled the latch to open the door. Dean smiled humorlessly at her as he slowly lowered himself into the car. She backed slowly and carefully from the parking spot and glanced at him, slumped against the door. After putting the car in drive, she reached out and patted his hand in an attempt at reassurance. She was surprised when his hand opened and engulfed hers, as though he was a drowning man. The gesture made her heart ache for him and she couldn’t bring herself to let go.
Dean was asleep almost as soon as she hit the main drag and steered in the direction of the address Sam had given her.
She removed her hand from his and mumbled. “You sure know how to show a girl a good time, Winchester.”

Catalan Folk Music
As per request, your favorite old person is here to give you some Catalan folk recommendations! (Actually I am neither old nor do I listen to large amounts of Catalan folk, but whatever, I’ll take any opportunity I get to talk about Catalan music.)
To begin with, the idea of “folk music” is kind of hard to define, since “folk” basically just means people and people are behind music most of the time. I’m not sure what Catalan folk Spotify thinks I’m listening to, but I’ll break down what I consider to be folk music from Catalunya and y’all can decide which one you think most accurately describes the style you like.
(this is officially Too Long so will continue under the cut)
Real Folk (aka Weird Songs Your Avis Would Sing About Jesus and Other Such Topics)
Beldà + Sanjosex - This is probably why Spotify thinks I enjoy Catalan folk, but this album is really cool for me because as the child of an ethnomusicologist one of my favorite things in the world are the original songs that people used to sing in different places aka Real Folk Music™, and this album is the epitome of that. Neither Carles Beldà nor Sanjosex are explicitly folk artists, so don’t listen to any of their other albums expecting them to be the same, but this one is basically them reviving traditional Catalan folk songs (including samples from original recordings) and I think it’s super cool. If you speak Catalan, there’s a website (called Càntut like the album) dedicated to preserving these sorts of songs, with a wealth of songs, lyrics, and recordings.
“El divino vull cantar” - Token Jesus song with one of the people who taught them the song featured at the beginning and end (and at the end he sings a verse that Sanjosex comments is one he had never heard before).
“El pomeró” - A cute song about a little apple tree of the sort that you would sing as a child except in a pretty polished version.
“Serrallonga” - A song about everyone’s favorite Catalan folk hero, this one has a bit more of an edge to it because Serrallonga was an edgy man.
Pep Gimeno “Botifarra” - I don’t know if Pep Botifarra should be here because he kind of transcends categories, but this was the best I could do. Basically, he’s a traditional singer in the Valencian cantaor style, and he makes a lot of traditional but also fun and modern music! In other words, the style he sings in is always traditional, and generally he’s accompanied by a traditional ensemble, but he also appears in collaboration with a range of groups from the País Valencià and the Països Catalans in general, especially groups like Obrint Pas. Also, a lot of his songs have more modern lyrics, and he’s generally just amazing.
“Malaguenya de Barxeta” - A rousing hymn to “el meu País Valencià” and honestly just The Best. Obrint Pas also have a version of this, which is also great, but less traditional.
“Jota de Xàtiva” - Feliu Ventura wrote at least some of the lyrics to this, but the music is old, which makes for a fun mix between modern and traditional.
“Cant de batre” - Just because it’s absolutely gorgeous, not because it’s famous or important.
Nova Cançó (aka The Kind of Folk That Came From the 60s and Was Mostly For Hippies but in Catalunya It Was a Bit More Rooted In Actual Tradition)
Lluís Llach - I actually don’t listen to much Llach, but how can I not include him on this list? I don’t know if I would consider him 100% folk, but he’s definitely a leader of the Nova Cançó movement and a Catalan musician who you just can’t not know.
“L’estaca” - THE song by Lluís Llach, also probably a good example of him singing in a more folk-y style.
Maria del Mar Bonet - I've only listened to a bit of Maria del Mar Bonet, but she was another leader of Nova Cançó and her songs are really pretty and a lot more folksy. She’s also from Mallorca, which is always fun.
“Merhaba” - A song about the unity of Mediterranean cultures and their shared history as seafarers. This version sounds like it came from a movie soundtrack but it’s great.
“Què volen aquesta gent?” - A song about political repression and persecution during the dictatorship. It’s pretty famous and very moving.
“Carta a l’exili” - A song about writing to people from exile, making a definite reference to all the Catalans exiled after the Spanish Civil War and during the dictatorship.
Al Tall - Al Tall are THE folk band from the País Valencià, even though they kind of don’t count as Nova Cançó. They sing a lot of really traditional Valencian songs, but as with a lot of these groups, some of them have a definitively anti-Spain and anti-Bourbon flavor (I’m looking at you, “Cant dels Maulets”). Also they use a lot of dolçaina, so if that annoys you then you’re probably not going to like them. Still, if you want folk from a certain era from Valencia, they are your go-to people.
“El cant dels Maulets” - I can’t not mention this song, sorry if you like the Bourbons but this is a legend and it deserves to be here.
“Cançó de la llum” - A good song about a town where the mayor is supposed to switch to electricity but siphons the funds away for other purpose and proceeds to get absolutely destroyed.
“Tio Canya” - I’m sorry but it’s kind of impossible to find a non-political song by Al Tall, this one is about the loss of the Valencian language and is probably one of their most famous.
Ovidi Montllor- Ovidi is also Nova Cançó and arguably does not count as folk but I don’t care because he’s amazing and y’all should listen to him. He’s very left-leaning and pro-Valencian/Països Catalans, so he’s basically eternally relevant to young Catalans and honestly to young people everywhere, which is why groups like Aspencat, La Gossa, El Diluvi, and even Txarango (see the opening line of “Agafant l’horitzó”) make constant references to him.
“Perquè vull” - A classic. The ultimate petty song but honestly such a mood. This version featuring Ovidi speaking in French at the beginning.
“Homenatge a Teresa” - Not personally my favorite Ovidi song, but it’s legendary so I can’t not put it. It’s a lot more quiet and gentle than his other songs.
“Tot explota pel cap o per la pota” - This is not the most Communist song by Ovidi, but it’s probably up there. Basically just about how the proletariat is done with the bourgeoisie, is empowered, and is going to rise up. What more could you ask for?
Raimon - Another super important artist from the País Valencià who is a bit more rooted in folk than Ovidi but still a part of Nova Cançó. I haven’t listened to a lot of Raimon but songs like “Al Vent” are classics that you can’t not like.
“Al vent” - A song about fighting despite the darkness of the world we were born into. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
“Jo vinc d’un silenci” - A haunting song about remembering where you come from and not losing sight of your roots.
“D’un temps, d’un país” - A solemnly beautiful song about pushing on and slowly winning the world that we have fought so much to see. Interpret what that world is as you will.
Esquirols - If you have an image of folk from the 1960s, Esquirols are probably what you’re imagining. Basically just a bunch of hippies singing songs about joining together (and also fighting for Catalunya but I mean what else would you expect at this point). In my opinion the best group from the Principat during this era, but that’s entirely personal and I am usually a bad judge of these things.
“Torna, torna, Serrallonga” - It’s ya boy he’s back and also this is literally The Most Legendary Song Ever it’s so epic (and as a heads up it’s also exceedingly political).
“Fent camí” - This is basically the Catalan version of all the songs I grew up with from Rise Up Singing (aka just a book with all the pro-union/grassroots protest songs ever sung in the United States), which is not a thing anyone is going to know but I don’t know how else to describe it.
“Arrels” - I just posted this a week or so ago (albeit a different version) but it’s so pretty and just a really nice positive song about life in general except not in a cheesy way, it’s just gorgeous and you have to listen to it for yourself.
“Folk Calentó” (aka Catalans Are Great and Have Modern Cool Hip Bands Who Play Folk in a Fun Way That Is Enjoyable to Listen to)
Roba Estesa - This band is literally the most undervalued Catalan group in modern music. They are six women who basically sing either feminist adaptations of traditional songs or else original songs with lots of influences from cúmbia or rumba catalana, but still with a definitive folk feel. They are amazing and deserve much more love than they get.
“Una altra ronda” - A lively song about getting really drunk with your friends because screw the rules women don’t care about being well-behaved.
“A la muntanya” - An older song about how girls just wanna have fun screw their husbands.
“Les noies d’Olot” - More girls just being generally badass and too good for the men who are interested in them.
El Diluvi - Of a similar left-leaning, feminist vein to Roba Estesa, this group is also very Catalanist and big fans of Ovidi (see above). They have a lively folk sound, with influences from all around the world, but are definitely rooted in acoustic, with a violin and a bandúrria making up part of their ensemble. They are quite possibly one of my favorite Catalan groups of all time.
“I tu, sols tu” - A feminist hymn but also just a great song, based on a poem by Maria Mercè Marçal.
“Vell record” - More of a folk song, with a somewhat Celtic sound and vivid lyrics.
“Alegria” - A simple, happy song about being happy. (What would expect, given the title?)
Germà Negre - A group which claims they were formed when La Moreneta (patron saint of Catalunya) visited them in a dream and told them to revive traditional Catalan music, which regardless whether it’s true or not, is a good origin story. They mostly sing covers of other artists (including songs by several of the artists listed above), but they have lots of interesting instruments and I really like them.
“L’Hereu Riera” - I am personally a fan of this version of this song, even though I’m pretty sure no one else knows it exists. The video shows the traditional dance that goes along with it as well as the cobla, the traditional Catalan musical ensemble.
“Les noies maques” - A great cover of a Catalan kids’ song that is about 200 times better than the original (even though the video does not match with the music being played, which is annoying).
“Guarda la lluna” -  A more traditional song, but it’s really lively and energetic.
La Troba Kung-fú - Probably a stretch, but rumba catalana is definitely folk music, and La Troba are masters of it. They definitely have a lot of modern influences from reggae and other things, but they do some really fun versions of traditional songs, which is what I’ll put here.
"La cançó del lladre” - The definitive version of this traditional song, very rumbero and very good, albeit perhaps not the most folk-like song.
“El preso de Lleida” (with Sílvia Pérez-Cruz) - A beautiful rumba version of this traditional Catalan song, with Sílvia Pérez-Cruz, who is another amazing folk-ish singer. It’s kind of quiet in the beginning, so turn up the volume.
“Flor de primavera” - Not a traditional song, but a gentle, beautiful rumba that is so dreamy and light you will immediately fall in love with it.
Indie Folk (aka The Acoustic Airy Sound That You Probably Associate With Folk More Than Anything Else on This List)
Mazoni - I haven’t listened to everything by him, but a lot of his music is what I would consider folk in the current sense of the word, especially his latest album. He is very much defined by that acoustic guitar sound, but can also be wildly different, so it’s hard to say with him.
“La collita” - A fun song about the apocalypse that takes a dig at Goldman Sachs, which is always appreciated.
“Pedres” - I personally really enjoy this song, it’s a bit grittier and more intense than the simple melody would seem.
Cesk Freixas - While I would consider Cesk Freixas more singer-songwriter than explicitly folk, he definitely has that specific sound. I haven’t really listened to much by him, but here are a few songs that aren’t “La petita rambla del poble sec” even though I love that song, plus him doing a cover of some of the songs earlier on this list.
“Et dono casa meva” - A mix of singer-songwriter and folk, a love song to Catalunya and the Països Catalans.
“Que no et falli mai la sort” - A good example of his unique brand of utopianism and hope for the future, which sounds silly but it’s honestly not.
“Al vent / L’estaca / Què volen aquesta gent?” - Cesk’s version of these three classics which you might recognize now :))))
Well, this ended up being more of a list of traditional Catalan music than Catalan folk music, but that’s more of what I listened to. This also turned out way too long, but am I even capable of writing short posts? Anyhow, enjoy!

Paint You Wings - Ethan Dolan {Part Seven}
A/N: This is one of my favorite chapters tbh so I hope y’all like it as well!
Averly’s POV
"Hey, E, can you bring your arms in just a little more?" I asked and squinted at the boys. Grayson went with us to the studio because he had nothing better to do, so I figured he could help model. He was positioned in Ethan's previous day's pose so I could see how shadows and shapes lined up.
Ethan brought his arms in a teeny tiny bit. I motioned for him to move them a little bit more, but this time he brought them in almost all the way.
"Extend them at, like, a fifty-degree angle."
He extended them absolutely perfectly this time. I started making the charcoal strokes to outline his frame, looking back and forth from the Twins to my canvas.
Grayson kept glancing around the studio and pointing at pieces, then asking questions about them. I loved how much interest they showed in my art. Back home, my interests were very uncommon - almost frowned upon.
He vaguely gestured at the back wall. "What's that one?"
I finished a few strokes, then turned around and looked at what he was pointing to. "It's my abstract interpretation of the song Nightmares by All Time Low." I folded my arms and put my weight on my right side.
Grayson hummed. "I've never heard it." He shook his head.
I gasped quietly and grabbed my phone. "You guys can break your poses real fast. I've got to show you this song."
Ethan and Gray stood up and stretched their backs out while I searched for the song. Grayson looked around at more of my pieces and Ethan stood beside me, leaning against the table.
Once I found the song, I plugged it into the speaker and sat in my swivel chair. Ethan tapped his fingers against his leg to the drum-beat while Grayson's toes caught onto the melody.
In my head, I sang the entire song - guitar riffs, drum-peaks, and all - but on the outside I simply moved my hand to the beat. As the song came to a close, Ethan and Gray stayed silent.
"What did you guys think of it?" I asked and smiled.
Ethan's eyebrows raised. "That was. . . Amazing."
Grayson smiled and nodded. "I loved it. I mean, it was fantastic."
I couldn't help but smile myself. Back home, no one really had my taste in anything. The Twins were a really nice change of pace. "I'm glad you guys liked it. Now, if we're gonna finish this painting anytime soon, we've gotta get back to work."
The boys agreed and went back to their stools, swung their arms around a little bit, then got into their poses. I went to shuffle on Pandora, and the first song to come on was 21 Questions by Waterparks. The music was like my timer. At the second verse, I'd finish Ethan's facial features, at the bridge, I'd shade a little bit, still using charcoal, and at the end of the song, I'd give the boys a break and mix paint colors.
"Do you guys wanna go get something to eat after this?" Grayson asked while I put together a light orange, brown, and white.
I held the pallet up to Ethan's face while he sat on the desk in front of me. "Sure, I'd be down." I shrugged. I dipped my pinky into the paint and tapped it on Ethan's cheek. Unless you looked for it, it was almost invisible. "Sorry, there's a sink in that room over there if you wanna wash it off." I pointed at the bathroom and took my pallet back over to my easel.
Ethan shook his head. "Nah, I'm good."
Once we started working again, I began adding paint. It was easier for me to converse with them while I was painting than when I was outlining, because painting is more like overrated coloring.
"So, Gray, do you have any special lady friend?" I was worried that if I asked Ethan first, it would look like I was hinting at something, but I wouldn't have been. Entirely.
Gray let out a breathy laughter and shook his head. "With what I do? Most girls either hate me or know exactly what I was doing on August seventeenth, two-thousand-one, at two in the afternoon."
I nodded my head. It was understandable. "What about you, E?"
He shook his head. "Nope. I'm in the same boat as Grayson."
I couldn't help but think that was a win. If no other good thing was gonna happen that day, at least I knew Ethan was single.
"What about you? Any guys in your life right now?" Ethan spoke up, then cleared his throat a little.
I almost laughed. Since leaving Dallas, hardly any guys have even glanced my direction. Ethan and Grayson were the first guys in a couple of months that I had talked to more than once. "No, not since leaving Dallas."
Grayson slapped Ethan's face out of nowhere. I couldn't help but laugh, but I also thought maybe Grayson was trying to be secretive about telling Ethan to make a move. Obviously, it wasn't the most sly way he could have gone, but I didn't mind at all.
We didn't say too much for the rest of the session. There was scattered conversation during breaks, and a little bit while I painted, but it was mostly just the sound of the music from my phone filling the air. Once I finished up painting Ethan's pose, I wiped my hands on my shirt and flipped the canvas upside down. It only took a few minor adjustments for me to be satisfied with my work for the day.
Ethan and Grayson stood behind me and looked at the piece. Ethan's eyes were wide and Grayson's mouth fell open. If nothing else, the boys helped my confidence a whole lot.
"Averly, this is. . . Oh, my God." Ethan couldn't finish his sentence. He pushed his hand through his hair and laughed. "How do you even. . . I just. . . Wow."
Grayson pointed at it. "Does this count as fanart?" He narrowed his eyes at Ethan.
We all laughed, but I agreed that after I died or if the gallery turned the piece down, Grayson could hang the painting somewhere in their apartment.
Once we piled into the car, Ethan turned around in the driver's seat and rubbed his hands together. "Where are we going?"
Gray shrugged. "I don't really care. I could eat anything you threw at me right now."
Ethan gasped and pointed at his brother. "Dude, I just got the greatest idea for a video! We've gotta go to the grocery store, like, right now." He put the car in drive and went straight to the store. We all ran through the parking lot and inside, even though Ethan was the only one who knew what we were looking for.
"Ethan, what do we need to get?" Grayson asked and grabbed a hand-basket.
He shook his head and took the basket from Grayson, then grabbed a big rolly one. "Not that little bitch of a basket, that's for sure."
I'm not sure why I found that sentence so funny, but I started laughing like I had never heard anything with any comedic value. Of course, the boys found it absolutely hilarious and started laughing themselves. Before long, we were all hunched over, holding onto anything stable we could find so we didn't fall over.
Once we managed to calm ourselves down, Ethan decided we had to go on our mission that he still hadn't told Grayson and I about. We pretty much just followed him around and watched him put the most random items in the cart. He got two watermelons, a bunch of apples, some bananas, two squashes, two zucchinis, a few canned foods, some pre-packaged cupcakes, pretty much everything.
"The last thing we need is a baseball bat." He held his phone with one hand and put the other on his hip. "Siri says there's an Academy a few blocks away, so we'll stop there next."
Grayson and I look at each other and narrow our eyes. "Ethan, what's all this for?" I asked.
He looked at Gray and I alternately. "You guys haven't caught on?" We shook our heads. "We're playing real-life fruit ninja!"
Grayson's eyes got huge as he looked back at the cart. "Oh my God! Come one! Let's get home fast so we can do this!" He started pushing it to the checking counters, but went past them all straight to self-checkout.
We had a good system going on to check everything out: Ethan handed Gray the item, Gray scanned it, I bagged it. It wasn't complex, but it was effective.
After getting a baseball bat at Academy, we went straight to the apartments. I helped the boys move their dining room table and couch, then put a drop-cloth down. Ethan sat up the camera, then moved all the food beside it.
He and Grayson got into view, then they asked me to start recording. I pressed the button, then gave them a thumbs-up.
"What's up guys? We're back!" Grayson shouted and did a weird jump-thingy.
"We're the Dolan Twins, and as you probably read, today we're doing. . ." Ethan counted down on his fingers for him and Grayson to shout it in synch.
"The real-life Fruit Ninja Challenge!"
Grayson scrunched his mouth to the side for a minute, then laughed. "I'm sure this has been done before, but I've never seen a video like this, so shoutout to whoever did this first." He shrugged.
Ethan grabbed the baseball bat and held it up. "We're gonna be using a baseball bat instead of a huge sword, though, because we kind of don't wanna die."
"Back behind the camera, we have a bunch of random foods, all numbered. We're gonna draw a number out of Ethan's hat, and then the guy who didn't draw the number gets to throw the food at us, and we have to try to hit it with the baseball bat." Grayson explained.
Ethan pointed at the camera. "Oh, yeah! Helping us out today, we have Averly back. Say hello, Av!"
I poked my head around the camera. "Hello!"
"Okay, now let's get started."
I moved the camera so it would be a head-on view of whoever had the bat first. We all had to wear goggles so that pieces of food wouldn't get in our eyes and damage them. Ethan came over to me after we each had our glasses on and held his phone up for a selfie. I smiled regular, but Ethan squinted his eyes and stuck out his tongue.
"I like that one, send it to me please." I laughed as I looked over it. He smiled and nodded his head.
We started filming again after that. Grayson had the bat first and Ethan held the hat open. Gray reached his hand in and pulled out a piece of paper. "Six."
I looked at the food and found the item with the right number. It was a can of green beans.
"Are we throwing what's inside the can, or the whole can?" I asked and handed it to Ethan.
He laughed. "The whole can. Grayson's not a little bitch. He can hit the can." He assured me.
I sighed and pushed my hair back. "If you've got faith in him, I guess."
He nodded his head and winked, then pulled his goggles down. "Ready Gray?" He gave us a thumbs up, then gave a few practice swings with the bat. Ethan twisted the can in his hands, then threw it full-force at Grayson. He hit it perfectly, but it hit a family portrait in the kitchen and knocked it off the wall.
Ethan and I gasped and Grayson covered his mouth. "Grayson!" Ethan went and picked up the broken fragments of the protective glass. After he picked it all up and threw it in the trash, he stood up and sighed. "In hindsight, that was a really stupid idea."
Grayson and I laughed in agreement. "Yeah, totally. It sounded cool though. Maybe if we ever get a huge sword-"
Ethan laughed and shook his head. "In what way do you think a sword would be better, Gray?" He asked.
Grayson shrugged. "It would be a hell of a lot cooler."

PROMISE ME NO PROMISES -- THE TOP 10 WORST HIT SONGS OF 2017
Let’s just get on with it. I’ll be less intricate and eloquent here – I’m just going to rip and tear into all these songs. Hello and welcome to...
THE TOP TEN WORST HIT SONGS OF 2017
I would give you dishonourable mentions but I feel there isn’t much here that is truly terrible enough to be noted other than the songs on the list so let’s just get straight into it!
#10
Have you ever hurt so much, physically or emotionally, that the only thing you can do is yell and yell, like a primal release of your...
PAIN!
#10 – Imagine Dragons – “Believer”
There are many, many elements in this song that mesh together like an insipid soup of gouged eyeballs, but on their own are more like slightly expired cheese strings – just that right balance of annoying, gross and still kind of okay, so much that you just don’t notice it if you don’t pay much attention. Let me tell you how about every single one of them:
1) What on earth is that percussion? This was supposed to be powerful but just sounds like the drummer fell asleep on his drum kit, with the bassist swirling his head around when needs be so he can hit the right drums.
2) The buzzing synth that is ever so subtle but ever so murderously annoying.
3) Dan Reynolds’ vocal inflections and singing – we’ll talk about those later.
4) The backing vocals sounding like wolves howling so weakly you’d think they’re in...
PAIN!
5) That.
6) The fact that Dan makes a weak attempt at rapping.
7) The lyrics making next to no sense and having next to no structure.
8) The whole point of the grating-as-all-hell chorus being so it can have that pause and dramatic drop for a movie trailer.
9) The fact that it’s still insanely catchy despite all these flaws.
10) And finally, the collision of all these intestine-munching parasites in the stomach-curling hell of a final chorus, with even more of those shrill additional vocals from the rest of the fantasy dragons that sound like a choir straight out of Robot Hell.
God, and this is only #10.
#9
This will be unpopular. Very unpopular.
#9 – SZA – “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott
Let’s talk about how much of an autotuned non-prescience Travis Scott is. He sounds like he’s been drowned out entirely by his own waves of sing-rapping. Not to say SZA’s inflections and melody aren’t any more annoying. The “love” melody is, I swear, one of the worst melodies I’ve heard all year. SZA has a faux-Jamaican accent thing going on, which wouldn’t be bad if it weren’t so obnoxious. Those effects piled onto her vocals aren’t doing her any favours, either. The worst part of this song is not Travis and it’s not SZA. It’s the production. The minimalistic, boring production in the intro leads to a bass-boosted apple-picking session where the apples are filled with helium, the tree is shaking and I have a knife to my throat. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere. I would put this in a tied entry higher on the list but I can’t deny the harmony later into the song and Travis’ adlibs are always a treat, honestly. Ya! I don’t know why, but I love them. You could say I low-oh-low-ah-oh-love them. I’m sorry, everyone who like this – and I know, there’s a lot of them – but I’m not a fan.
#8
[chuckling and snickering]
#8 – Drake – “Fake Love”
[bursts out laughing] This song is probably too hilarious to hate, but it’s so pathetic that I just had to put it on here. If you like subtly autotuned wailing leaping out of Drake’s confused, blurred mess of a vocal performance, over steel pans and trap percussion, you’re in luck.
Whole time, they wanna take my place / Whole time, they wanna take my place
That falsetto sounds like a whimpering child whose sandcastle just got stomped on. It’s somehow both cute and ear-shredding.
I’ve been down so long
You were never down; in fact, we’re damn near sick of you, Drake. You don’t sound like you were on any type of downer when you recorded this though.  The sheer emotion in his vocals is clear, but they’re not very good at all. They just aren’t, and I can’t listen to this song without clocking a smile. When I’m sad, I put this song on. It’s that depressingly hilarious.
Fake people showing fake love to me / Straight up to my face
The lyrics to this are blunt but fragile, and are actually a beautiful set of lyrics that really capture Drake’s anger – are people showing him fake love? Probably not, but he’s so paranoid that they are. It’s a great set of lyrics, but Drake’s delivery is equivalent to a parrot who just got dumped and is feeling human emotions like grief, denial and sadness for the first time in its life. This could have easily been the same spot on my best list, so much that I had to go to random.org to decide if this should go on the best or worst list because this is simultaneously terrible and terrific. That Scary Hours EP is pretty cool though, you should check that out... or if you want a laugh, just open up Spotify and listen to “Fake Love”. Better luck next year, better luck next year, ‘cause I’m excited to start giving Drake love next year.
#7
I put two Maroon 5 songs on my best list. I suppose this is my punishment.
#7 – Maroon 5 – “Don’t Wanna Know” featuring Kendrick Lamar
Everyone’s already talked about this song, so I’m not going to beat a dead horse. I’m going to beat a pissy, mind-numbingly repetitive, vocally ear-splitting, blandly tropical, trend-hopping, Kendrick-wasting, badly-tasting, copy-and-pasting, dung-pile of a horse. Oh, wait, I kind of already did that just now. I’ll just leave with you with one of K-Dot’s most fitting lyrics – from this very song:
No more, please stop
#6
This isn’t a hit song; this is a godforsaken nursery rhyme.
#6 – blackbear – “do re mi” (remix) featuring Gucci Mane
The intro to this song is just a bunch of random noises. I’m not kidding, there’s a few synthesizer sounds, a pitched-up reverb-affected sample of blackbear singing the hook, blackbear’s very own ad-libs, some of which are pitched-down, and Gucci Mane yelling “Gucc’!” at the top of his lungs, which I’m surprised isn’t a meme. You know what else is meme-worthy? This dude’s falsetto.
Do re mi, fa, so f**king done with you
And this hook, these lyrics and that melody. Am I the only one who thinks it would somehow be more obnoxious and cringe-worthy if he said “freaking done with you” instead? No?
I think this song is just purely bitter, but not in a way I can relate to, just dark chocolate without flavour or texture. Fittingly, the instrumentation and production is some of the blandest trap-R&B I’ve ever heard. blackbear sounds like a robot for most of the verse until he breaks out as nonsensical child turned angry R&B sing-rapper who broke up with a supposed floozy. Honestly, Gucci Mane’s verse is pretty good but it has hardly any relation to the rest of the song so it’s almost a certainty that I’ll enjoy it, because this song is garbage. How in the hell did this trash make the year-end? I hope blackbear has another hit because frankly, I quite enjoy some of his music, and I don’t want this to be his only hit. Gucci Mane is still awesome though.
#5
There are two songs on this list with a Beyoncé remix, both of which I have credited as the original instead because I don’t want her to be on the list twice when she’s easily the best part of both songs by a landslide. You know why this next one’s on the list, so let’s not waste our time.
#5 – J Balvin and Willy Williams – “Mi Gente”
To describe this song, I have to ask you two questions, the first one being: Have you ever heard a goat or sheep blaring in a farm or zoo? This is what that screeching ear-piercing sample makes you think of – a herd of goats all angry, hungry and confused – which is taken from a song that samples that very sound as well, from another song. The second question is: have you ever heard a reggaeton song? Of course, you have, you’ve heard “Despacito”, haven’t you? Imagine them mixed together, but no, not mixed in a sleekly-designed modern building, collided in a messy derelict ramshackle of an apartment with sweat dripping down every single piece of dirty laundry, in which the sweat is coming from the rats inside the walls instead of the ghastly insane elderly woman who lives there with her ten cats, who is so moist and dry in old age she has lost the ability to sweat, cry or her favourite thing to do, spit on people. Hence, she’s criminally depressed and so am I after listening to this song, as it is so unbearable to the point where I’m flabbergasted at how this became a top 10 hit. Next!
#4
Wait a second... I don’t even know what “mi gente” means. Oh, it means “my people”? Talking about a group of people, here’s our first, last and only tie on the list, and it’s a doozy.
#4 – Yo Gotti  - “Rake it Up” featuring Nicki Minaj / Lil Uzi Vert - “XO Tour Llif3”
These are completely different songs, but they both represent the oversaturation of trap in their sleep-inducing beats, stupid, scatterbrain lyrics that show off every single rap cliché possible (I’ll go into detail some other time in a bonus list after this one) and a whole dose of bad vocal performances, most notably Lil Uzi Vert’s autotuned whining in “XO Tour Llif3”. At least they’re the only God-awful trap songs to be hits this year.
#4 – Kodak Black – “Tunnel Vision”
Oh, yeah, the song about racial profiling that also includes a lyric about or at least implying a reference to your rape charges... I think I know why they want you locked up, mate. While you’re there, we should also give you some basic English education, because anyone who thinks “iggin’” is a perfectly usable word, and that “winning”, “listen” and “iggin’” rhyme with “penitentiary” should probably start re-thinking if the school they went to did the best job they could. Well, at least Rae Sremmurd didn’t have a hit this year.
#4 – Ayo & Teo – “Rolex” / Rae Sremmurd – “Swang”
Two—two of them? We have two of them now?!
Hop out, drop-top, f **k y’all talkin’, I need it right now, right now
What’s with the falsettos this year? Did everyone forget how to sing in a higher pitch properly?
#4 – ZAYN and Taylor Swift – “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Forever)”
Oh, so, that’s a yes, then? How about we just give hits to people who can’t sing at all?
#4 – Julia Michaels – “Issues”
I have issues with this song, but again, it’d be beating a dead horse with a sack of coal. At least it’s a woman who can’t sing this time... Girl power, I guess?
#4 – Halsey – “Now or Never”
Well, at least she can sing, I suppose. It’s just that this song is all over the place, like a bed that’s way too...
#4 – Migos – “Slippery” featuring Gucci Mane
Sorry, Gucc’. I love you, man, I really do, but you associate yourself with some of the worst singers, some of the least interesting rappers, and sometimes...
Two b****es so fine that I masturbated
...some of the worst yet still very interesting lyrics.
Yes, those are all my picks for #4. They are all as equally lazy and incompetent as each other.
#3
Now let’s move onto one song that is somehow worse than every single song in the last spot combined, mostly due to the annoyance of every single possible sound effect the producers crammed into it.
#3 – Hailee Steinfeld and Grey – “Starving” featuring Zedd
I didn’t know that I was starving ‘til I tasted you
Okay, a bit of a weird metaphor, but it adds some sensuality to it all so it gives the relationship some lip-biting romance, so that’s a decent line.
Don’t need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo
Oh... never mind. Seriously, the concept of this line is okay on paper, but “the whole damn zoo” is so forced and downright nonsensical that it really takes me out of whatever sensuality, romance or even fun this line was supposed to be portraying. Butterflies aren’t even typically animals that are perceived as “zoo animals”; they’re found in zoos in those enclosures but that’s pretty much it. What were you going for here, five writers? Seriously, you had five writers, none of which are credited because of sampling or interpolation by the way, three of which being professional, two of which being Grey themselves, and none of those grown men and women could figure out any reason to why this line is incredibly corny, or have the gall to object it? Yes, most of this section has been about that lyric but what else is there to criticise other than that lyric and the drop, which is one of the weakest this year? I’ll pass.
#2
So what’s number #2? It can’t be as bad as that song.
#2 – Imagine Dragons – “Thunder”
...Then dishonourable mentions time it is!
Dishonourable Mentions
Ed Sheeran – “Shape of You”
This is in order of the Year-End and not my opinion because I just want to not talk about “Thunder” as easily and as long as I can. If the most popular song of the year is this terrible, it should be a bad sign, but 2017 is great, so I suppose there are exceptions.
Sam Hunt – “Body like a Back Road”
I’ve made a rule to never put country songs on any lists because I have a negative bias towards them; just never enjoyed the genre that much. Sorry.
James Arthur – “Say You Won’t Let Go”
Boring.
Kygo and Selena Gomez – “It Ain’t Me”
This drop just completely ruins the song.
Logic – “1-800-273-8255” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid
Khalid saves this.
Who can relate? (whoo!)
Taylor Swift – “Look What You Made Me Do”
This has a really good pre-chorus. That’s about all my positives.
Machine Gun Kelly – “Bad Things” featuring Camila Cabello
“Havana” must have been a fluke.
Ariana Grande – “Side to Side” featuring Nicki Minaj
Wrist icicle, ride d**k bicycle / Come true, yo, get you this type of blow / If you wanna Minaj, I got a tricycle
D**k bicycle... okay, Nicki.
Shawn Mendes – “Mercy”
I suppose this has enough of a rock edge for me to forgive.
Some random teenage nobodies – “that Vine dance song (why do these still exist)”
Dead horse.
Katy Perry – “Chained to the Rhythm”
Are we tone-deaf?
Are you talking to the people who bought your album?
Jon Bellion – “All Time Low”
Out of all of their discography, I can’t believe “Jon Bellion” is the song that got big. “Weightless” is so much better.
Sam Smith – “Too Good at Goodbyes”
This is so perfect that it sickens me.
P!nk – “What About Us”
This is so non-descript that it sickens me.
Cheat Codes – “No Promises” featuring Demi Lovato
Whoever the guy is needs to input the singing codes. It’s D, O, O, R, left.
Shawn Mendes – “Treat You Better”
Ew.
Rita Ora – “Anywhere”
Oh, how I wish you crossed over.
The Chainsmokers – “Closer” featuring Halsey / Future – “Mask Off” / DJ Khaled – “I’m the One” featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne
I’ve yet to decide if these songs are heaven-sent or hells spawn.
Now, let’s talk about the demon that is “Thunder”.
Thunder, feel the thunder
There are so many things about this song that make me want to shrivel up in the corner and rot. First of all, there’s the way-too-bouncy trap production for an otherwise triumphant song; it shouldn’t be this joyful and plucky. Those finger-snaps are so blatantly fake, and that synth sounds like literal yawning edited to sound like a chirping tone that just scratches the surface of unbearable. Dan Reynolds in general is an absolute plonker throughout the verses, with the vocal inflections of a Pez dispenser who just, for no reason, slides off into a spiral of autotuned murmuring in the first verse.
Just a young gun, with a quick fuse / I was uptight, wanna let loose / I was dreaming of bigger things / And wanna leave my whole life behind
The lyrics, by the way, are literally saying “I was into this band before you were cool”, which makes the second verse even more aggravating, especially due to the pitch-shifted vocal that appears on every single one of his terrible vocal inflections.
Kids were laughing in my classes / While I was scheming for the masses
Now I’m smiling from the stage while / You were clapping in the nosebleeds
The verses are terrible, but it’s not the worst part of this song, and neither is the next thing I’m going to bring up, but this is awful too.
You know how Kanye West manipulated samples so they’d sound kind of like a chipmunk? Well, Imagine Dragons do the same, however here, instead of a low-key soul-influenced hip hop track, it’s supposed to be a triumphant synth-pop victory lap, so this repetitious pitch-shifted nonsense is unfitting, unnecessary and unbearable. What are they repeating, you ask? The word “thunder”, which Dan does in the chorus as well. Hence, the word “thunder” is used approximately 78 times, excluding when only one syllable of the word is said (that happens a lot too). This song is just barely over three minutes, and there’s not many instrumental parts, apart from a certain section we’ll get to later. “Thunder” doesn’t have as much of an impact when it’s said nearly 80 times in your relatively short song, that was made for pop radio so of course it’s going to be played frequently.
There’s also that guitar solo... that pathetic wimpy guitar solo. There’s such a leap in hatred and lack of quality and redeemable moments from #3 to #2... what was #1? “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran? Well, I hate that song, but technically, it doesn’t count because it didn’t make the Year-End... screw it.
#10 – Cheat Codes – “No Promises” featuring Demi Lovato
Which means...
#1 – Imagine Dragons – “Thunder”
You happy, Dan? I’m officially jealous of you, like you wanted me to be. I’m envious of your success despite several attempts to make the radio play garbage – and not even the good kind like recyclable garbage or guilty-pleasure garbage, just plain, unadulterated crap worthy of no more attention. Congratu-freaking-lations. I’ll see you for the next episode of Reviewing the Charts or the next review or whatever, I don’t care. Goodbye. Hopefully next year is the same quality or even better than this year. So far it doesn’t seem to be even close.
Thun-thun-thunder, thunder.

I recorded past your first 100 since some of these were names and some I haven’t heard for myself (others told me you said them), so I wasn’t sure if those should count.
You also know a lot of animal sounds: moo, quack quack, baa, ooh-ooh-ah-ah, neigh, rarrr! And you try to snort like a pig but it’s basically you just pushing air out of your nose.
And you’re starting to string words together! Dada work/Mama work/Grandma work. Grandma house. Baby cry. Where’s Elmo. It’s a money. It’s a fart. Dada fart. Grandma fart. (All the most important things, obviously.)
It’s amazing how quickly you’re learning! I was able to record your words in order maybe up to #14. And then all of a sudden you’re bringing me objects and telling me their names, or we’re walking by something and you stop and point and tell me what it is!
And you do the funniest, coolest things. You love giving people the fist to “pound it.” You change your dance moves according to the music (from swaying to stomping to head banging). You pick diapers up off the floor and throw them away (not that we leave a lot of diapers laying around... but if we don't throw it away immediately, you’re on it!) You like to turn around in your highchair at restaurants and sit it in backwards so you’re facing the tables beside us, and no one around you can eat because they’re all just oohing and aahing and giggling at you as you smile and make faces and wave. You yell “Bye yo!” (bye y’all?) at people if they walk away without paying attention. You’ve put your snack bag on over your shoulder and called “bye yo” to me as you walked toward the front door. You put your little Hello Kitty purse on when it’s time to go and bring our shoes to us (Mama shoes. Dada shoes.) Auntie Alyss said she saw you bow your head, make some soft muttering noises, then say, “Amen” before eating!
You’ve gotten very comfortable at Daycare now! Judy says you’re not a huge fan of sharing. Well, that’s not exactly true -- you like people sharing with you! I guess it just doesn’t seem like sharing when you’re the only one taking toys and food away from the other kids. I’m sure you’d be cool with it if they did the same to you, though. And who made Judy the boss of what sharing looks like anyway?
I think you’re pretty smart. Most of the time when you’re throwing a fit or getting whiny because you want something, I just say, “Say please,” and you’ll stop mid head-throw, tears streaming down your face, and say, “Please.” And then you’ll wait patiently while I get whatever it is you were asking for.
You’re also compassionate. You’ve given hugs and kisses when we’ve told you we were sick or hurting. And if we pretend-cry because you have something you won’t give us, you lower your head and look up at us with those big, round eyes of yours... and sometimes give in.
That’s another thing -- you’re pretty determined. Maybe strong-willed is more accurate? That’s nothing new, though -- they were saying that the day you were born. Our “fights” have mostly been over clothes and shoes so far. See these pictures?

These are just a few of the times when you’ve insisted on dressing/accessorizing your way. (I don’t know what it is with those orange pants and the Christmas light pants... you always want to wear them. And these blue Crocs Auntie Danes gave you that Kyrie grew out of. One thing they all have in common -- they don’t match anything!)
There was one time where you did okay, though:

(You chose the vest and when I told you it was time to go, you made sure to grab a bag that matched your outfit! It may just have been luck that day, though, sorry to say. You insisted on dragging that bag around for a while after that.)
Your new most-requested song is “ABC, ABC” -- when Elmo sings the alphabet with India Arie. Sometimes you’ll still ask for “Cece” (Cecilia and the Satellite). And Andrew McMahon’s other songs still seem to do the trick in keeping you calm at times... but your fave is definitely anything where Elmo’s high-pitched voice makes a cameo.
Here are some of our favorite pics of you from the past few months:

And some of my favorite moments with you...
Our mornings together! Snuggling in bed, you sitting on the kitchen counter while I make breakfast, watching you feed yourself with a spoon (you always ask for a “poon” now and are getting really good at using it!), you sitting on the bathroom counter, brushing your teeth while I brush mine, then watching me get ready and trying to copy me with Q-tips and chapstick and eyeliner.
I love the soft way you look at me when we’re sharing a pillow, and when you voluntarily give me kisses and hugs! And how you make a little whimpering noise when I pick you up after being away, and you’re happy to see me.
And just today, you, Daddy, and I were all lying on the bed together, trying to get you to go to sleep -- you looked at Daddy like you were going to kiss him... then you pulled out your hand, squeezed his nose, and said, “beep beep!”
Well it’s getting past midnight now, so I should go to sleep. I love you, my sweet Karis. You bring so much joy everywhere you go!
Love,
Mom
