Big Bug Appreciation Post! (1/2)
For anyone who’s been on my blog, or has interacted with me, it’s no surprise I’m a bug enthusiast. But I don’t think I’ve ever made an official bug appreciation post, and there are a lot of bugs in my state that I think are super neat, so I wanted to briefly talk about them here. Not all of them will be insects though.
Unfortunately, I won’t be putting in any isopods or roaches because my state doesn’t have a whole lot of those guys that I would consider “particularly special.” But just note that I do appreciate isopods and roaches, and think that they have a great impact on their natural environments.
Anyway, onto the bugs!
Blue-Winged Wasp
Tumblr media
These babes usually hang out in the dog fennel near my yard, and I think they’re very pretty wasps. Their wings are an iridescent blue (hence the name), and their yellow spots are quite cute. They're also relatively chill, so you can stand pretty close to them and they wouldn’t care.
2. Common Paper Wasp
Tumblr media
They’re everywhere, but I’d be lying if I said they weren’t pretty either. I think that they have a really neat color palette and super cool pattern to them. I’ve had personal experience with them, and I’ve always made sure that when I went on my balcony, that I didn’t present as a threat to them. Overall, I enjoyed sitting with these pretty critters.
3. Giant Leopard Moth
Tumblr media
They look like snow leopards! Ironically enough, similar to how snow leopards are closely related to tigers, leopard moths are closely related to tiger moths (in fact, they’re in the same family). I raised one of these guys. His name was Napoleon, and he was the fanciest little guy 🩵.
4. Amber Snail
Tumblr media
It’s usually stated online that amber snails are a pretty rare species. So I think it was pretty neat how I once found five or six on my mom’s calla lilies. They’re very tiny and very adorable, ‘nuff said.
5. Golden Sill Orb Weaver
Tumblr media
A huge species of orb weaver that I think is absolutely gorgeous. These gals can get big, and I mean BIG. But no matter the size, it’s always a treat to see them during walks into the woods.
6. Agapostemon Sweat Bee
Tumblr media
Agapostemon is actually just a genus of sweat bee, and I’ve personally come across at least two species. All I really need to say about these guys is that they’re metallic green bees, and the ones that live near my house are surprisingly mega chill (I still wouldn’t hold one tho lol).
7. Bee Fly
Tumblr media
Maybe not as cute as their Japanese relatives, but they’re still whimsical little fairy creatures that I would absolutely pet in a heartbeat (if given the chance).
8. Flatback Millipede
Tumblr media
I just wanted to bring up how metal I think these guys are. 10/10, absolutely fire little guys 🔥🔥🔥.
9. Eastern Pondhawk
Tumblr media
They’re everywhere in the local pond and I love them. They’re one of my favorite examples of dimorphism because of how cool the females look (they’re the green ones). But sometimes it can be hard to distinguish a male and a female because younger males are more green. Still, they’re cool bugs.
10. Violet Dancer
Tumblr media
In my opinion, one of the prettiest species of damselflies. I’ve encountered one of these before (at a swamp). They’re just as vibrant as in the pictures 💜.
11. Ebony Jewelwing
Tumblr media
Another beautiful damselfly! This time, on a larger scale. These can also be found in swamps, and their metallic green color is super cool.
12. Swallowtails (Just in General)
Tumblr media
(Pipevine Swallowtail in the picture)
Swallowtails are my state’s official butterfly, and the reason for that is pretty simple: They’re literally everywhere. The most common is the Eastern Tiger, but there are other species, such as: The Black Swallowtail, Zebra Swallowtail, Pipevine Swallowtail, and probably even more. Another neat thing about them is that they’re in the same family as the world’s largest butterfly species: The Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing. So there’s some fun lil trivia for ya 👍.
13. Golden Northern Bumblebee
Tumblr media
They’re very friend-shaped, and also very big. In fact, some of them can get bigger than carpenter bees. They don’t visit very often, but I really like them.
14. Variegated Fritillary
Tumblr media
A very close relative of the gulf fritillary. In fact, I found caterpillars of both species eating passion vine together.
Tumblr media
You can usually tell them apart pretty easily since Variegated caterpillars are lined with white dots. Also, fun fact: Their spines are non-stinging and completely harmless in general.
15. Larger Elm Leaf Beetle
Tumblr media
Super friend-shaped, and extremely lightweight (you will barely feel them on your hand). They're pretty easy to handle since they’re very docile. But they’re considered pests to certain plants, so they’re not very liked by gardeners.
16. Golden Tortoise Beetle
Tumblr media
Also friend-shaped, but very tiny and super skittish. One really interesting thing about them is that their larvae use their own feces as a shield. So, yeah, that’s a thing that they do.
17. Imperial Moth
Tumblr media
A close relative of the Luna Moth (they’re in the same family). They might not be the most extravagant moths, but they have a rustic charm to them, and they remind me of bananas. Also, they’re fluffy, so they’re automatically cute.
18. Pink-Striped Oakworm Moth
Tumblr media
A much smaller relative of the Luna Moth (also in the same family). These babes are nocturnal and absolutely adorable.
19. Antlion
Tumblr media
Despite being shaped like a damselfly, these fellas are more closely related to lacewings and mantidflies. You may recognize their name, and that’s because the most notable thing about antlions is their larvae (also called “doodlebugs”).
Tumblr media
Y’know, these silly lil guys. The ones that make pit traps to eat their favorite food: Ants. They're funky. I love them.
20. Spring Fishfly
Tumblr media
I just think they’re cool. They come from water.
21. Woolly Apple Aphid
Tumblr media
Adorable, fluffy, whimsical fairy creatures. I had the pleasure of holding one once. You can’t even feel them on your finger.
22. Red Velvet Ant/ Cow Killer
Tumblr media
Despite her name, she’s not actually an ant. She’s a type of wasp in the family Mutilidae, where females are wingless. These wasps (specifically the males) are called “cow killers” because of a myth that said their stings were so powerful, they could kill a cow. This isn’t true tho.
23. Crane Fly
Tumblr media
They look like giant mosquitoes, but fear not! They won’t hurt you! In fact, one of their nicknames is “mosquito eater.” But they don’t actually eat mosquitoes. At least, the adults don’t. They don’t even have the proper mouthparts to do that. Instead, Crane Flies feed on nectar, which makes them minor pollinators. So while they can get everywhere once they spawn, they’re not actually that big of a problem. And they’re super frail, so please be gentle if you want to hold them🤎.
24. Two-Spotted Longhorn Bee
Tumblr media
Absolutely adorable! They don’t visit very often, but when they do, they like to visit the sage in the garden. I usually find them frequently the same plants as the Leafcutter bees.
25. Giant Water Bug
Tumblr media
One of the coolest dudes ever. You’ll always find them anywhere wet, but please know that they can get BIG. They won’t charge after you, but they will bite if they feel threatened, and it will hurt. I’ve encountered these funky guys before, and I just admire them from a good distance.
26. Promachus Robber Flies
Tumblr media
Promachus is also just a genus of robber fly (I don’t know how many species live in my state tho). I just think they look cool. And they’re good for pest control 👍.
27. Common Checkered Skipper
Tumblr media
Cute little babies that are slightly blue. I have one in my bug collection.
28. Long-Tailed Skipper
Tumblr media
Another cute little baby. And also blue! These things are pretty common in the garden, and I’m always happy to see them.
Reached the image count limit. I’ll post the second part in a bit.

Halloween Countdown Day 8
The Jorogumo (Spider Woman of Japanese Folklore)
Beware of the sinister Jorogumo in the forest at Halloween!
My second costume character of 2023 is inspired by the Jorogumo yokai of Japanese folklore. The Jorogumo's name means "entangling bride" or "prostitute spider" in Japanese. Yokai are supernatural monsters of traditional stories and myths in Japan. They are often based on real creatures or are explanations for natural phenomenon. For example, the Jorogumo is a real spider called the Golden Orb-Weaver (Trichonephila clavata) that has lived for at least 400 years and attained magical powers over its unnaturally long life.
The Jorogumo is said to be a solitary predator who lives in caves, abandoned houses, and forests all over Japan since ancient times. They are powerful deceivers and shapeshifters who use their cunning to trap strong young men in order to eat them. She takes the form of a captivatingly beautiful young woman to lure her favourite prey into her web, where the unfortunate man is bound with unbreakable spider webs while the Jorogumo feasts on him over many days. Jorogumo are often depicted as sexy women with spider limbs surrounded by spider webs and the skeletons of their many victims.
Like a lot of Japanese yokai stories, not only are they great spine chillers but also moral fables showing examples of the type of people and situations one should avoid in real life! Nowadays, the real life Jorogumos use the world wide web rather than a spider web to trap their victims and bleed them dry of money.
Watch out for my Jorogumo character, who may lure you into the forest and trap you in her spider web!

[ ID: A reference sheet with multiple outfits. Text at the top reads Kisa Y Smiles, butch lesbian, she/he/they, 28 y/o, and vocalist/jorōgumo. She is a fat Japanese woman with close cropped black hair, dark orange eyes, large orange gauges, and many tattoos.
The first outfit is labeled as underwear and they are wearing a grey sports bra and red plaid patterned boxers.
The second outfit is labeled as casual and he is wearing a white tee shirt with rolled sleeves that is tucked into cuffed blue jeans. He's also wearing a brown watch and brown work boots. He has silver rings on his left middle finger and right thumb.
The third outfit is labeled as formal and she is wearing a dark orange dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows and an orange tie with a silver tie clip. She's also wearing a light grey vest and dark brown slacks. She has a sleek black watch, two rings on her left hand and one on her right thumb, and dark dress shoes.
The fourth outfit is labeled as spider. They now have 8 eyes with black sclera and bright orange irises. Large black and orange spider legs, like those of a golden orb weaver, extend from their back. Their nails are black as well. They're wearing an orange kimono patterned with red flames and a matching red obi. Over it they wear a teal haori. They wear dark navy sandal socks and tan geta with white straps. End ID ]
Finally finished Kisa's reference sheet!! Never let me design a character with multiple tattoos ever again. Censored version with all tattoos under the cut!
Tumblr media
[ ID: Kisa with all of his tattoos on display. At the base of his throat, he has a teal fire tattoo. Directly underneath his breasts, there is a skull with nine swords piercing the top of it and one in it's mouth. On the left side of his ribs is a cartoonish dragon head. On his left hip is a banner with motherfucker written in red and all caps.
On her right shoulder is a tattoo of a sun with a face. Directly below it is a small moon and stars tattoo. On her right forearm is a green snake with a small star at it's tail.
On their left shoulder is a large red oni mask tattoo. Their left forearm has a blue, purple, and pink hydrangea tattoo as well as a small smiley face with it's tongue sticking out. On the inside of their left forearm is a triangle with small fire motifs.
On his right thigh, there is a hand holding up a pixie by it's wings. Under that is two cards, one displaying a spider web back and the other with a heart design. On the top of her right knee is an eye with multiple and overlapping pupils. Below the knee is a simple chainsaw design and a black cat sitting in a crescent moon.
On her left thigh is an Atlas moth holding up the earth. There is also a simple candle, a small ghost, and an even smaller paw print. Written on his knee, upside down and in all caps, is the word shit. On their calf is dagger pointing down at an anatomical heart, encircled by teeth. End ID ]
So. Many. Tattoos.
He also has a full spider back piece and yes when she manifests the spider legs, they do come from the tattoo.

A male evolution for Spidops for a contest of Instagram Nephilie (Nephila + Lie) Bug/Steel 75/119/97/62/116/65 Signature move: Hidden Ace Steel type, 70 BP, 100% Accuracy If Nephilie strikes before the opponent, this moves deals x2 damage and ignores type resistances if present --- Basically this evolution is only male because it's based in Yamato Takeru, the semi-legendary prince that cross-dressed as a maid to kill the Kumaso leaders Since this story is sometimes said as the first ninja legend, I decided to use this as a way to extend Spidops theme
Tumblr media
Of course, it's also heavily inspired in a Jorogumo. However I decided to use Yamato's inspiration to make a subversion of the femme fatale trope and make it male Also, the male exclusivity is to honor those who couldn't have the right of evolving by their sex As the only special thing that Yamato did to kill his enemies was using a knife, that's why the Steel type, but it's also because Jorogumo can't be poisoned The golden details in the design is because jorogumo is also used to refer the golden orb weaver spiders
Tumblr media
Hidden Ace is called "Ace" like Aerial Ace as that move is based in a very specific japanese sword technique (even though Yamato just plain stabbed) The move is meant to oppress foes with Silk Trap/Sticky Web and Stakeout to give Spidops a better niche through this evolution Spidops is meant to be a pitiful early mon, but if Linoone got an evo (even though through a regional form), Spidops can And finally, the japanese theme was meant for the rules of this contest

Kagemaru and being a Jorogumo
Kagemaru is a jorogumo. Now the lore behind the jorogumo yokai is that when a golden orb weaver (that’s a real spider fun fact) becomes 400 years old, it gains magical powers including the ability to shapeshift. Now usually jorogumo will turn their appearance into a beautiful young women to lure in their prey, which is typically young lovestruck men. However, Kagemaru’s “normal” form is one of an attractive, gorgeous man, which is not typically portrayed in folk culture. However, the creators of Ayakashi RR incorporated the jorogumo’s ability to shapeshift into Kagemaru. They had him cross dress as a women and go by the name Yuzuru, then to incorporate the luring of young men, they made her very popular and well liked within the community.
Going back to the folklore of the jorogumo, after gaining their magical powers, they need more energy to sustain themselves, which is why they start eating humans. Jorogumo’s attitude towards humans is akin to a spider’s thoughts of an insects; humans are just something to snack on. We can see this attitude with Kagemaru. Kagemaru looks down on human, saying that they’re weak. They’re insects compared to the spider he is.
Also, it makes sense for Kagemaru’s other persona, Yuzuru, to work as a geisha. The reason why? Geisha’s work at brothels, and you know who else work as brothels? Prostitutes, or in Japanese a jorō… which is in the name of jorōgumo. It means whore spider, so it makes sense for him to be working at a brothel.
There’s also an interesting detail in his character design. As you can see, Kagemaru wears his obi belt on the side, which is not common. However, this is interesting because usually in brothels people were able to distinguish a jorō from a geisha based on how their obi was tied. If it was tied in the front they were a jorō (cause it would be easier to take off clothes if it was in the front), but if it was tied in the back they were a geisha (cause it was out of the way for dancing, playing music, and entertaining guests). Kagemaru’s in his male form has his on the side lazily, suggesting that he’s not quite a jorō but he’s also not in his full on geisha form or persona. He’s somewhere in between.

Jorōgumo from Japanese folklore.
Even when it is in its human form though, its reflection will show a giant spider. It can not be killed by any kind of poison. The name Jorogumo is that of the Nephila Clavata, a real kind of spider.
In Japan, some spiders are known to possess amazing supernatural powers. One of these, the jorōgumo, known as the golden orb-weaver in English, is the most well-known of the arachnid yokai.
Jorōgumo live solitary lives, both as spiders and as yokai. When a golden orb-weaver reaches 400 years of age, it develops magical powers and begins to feed on human prey instead of insects. They make their nests in caves, forests, or empty houses in towns. They possess a cunning intelligence and a cold heart, and see humans as nothing more than insects to feed on. They are skillful deceivers and powerful shapeshifters.
Jorōgumo’s favorite prey is young, handsome men who are looking for love. When a jorōgumo spots a man she desires, she invites him into her home, and he is usually never seen again. They can spin silk threads strong enough to ensnare a grown man so that he cannot escape. They also have a powerful venom that can slowly weaken a man day by day, allowing the spider to savor the long and painful death her victim suffers. They can control other, lesser spiders, even employing fire-breathing spiders to burn down the homes of any who grow suspicious of them.

Shinra Admin/Director/Lead Daemons
Prs. Shinra was going to have a weasel for the longest time before I changed his Daemon to a fox. The other Daemons didn’t really change much, other than Heidegger’s going from a European Boar to an Indian one, and Palmer’s generic ‘goat’ needing a breed.
This took loner that I’d like to admit, and along with personal projects- caused me a bit of stress.
As per usual- under the Read-More is more in-depth analysis;
Reeve Tuetsi
Daemon: Mainecoon cat Daemon Name: mòrdha Looks: A large black cat with a whiteface, chest, paws and tail-tip. She also has hazel eyes.
She’s a rather reserved Daemon, but whispers frequently to Reeve and helps him sound ideas about their job- and all the woes that come with it.
Symbology: Mainecoon cats are the largest breed of domestic cat. As such, Reeve’s work is the huge domestic sector, making sure that Midgar’s citizens are safe and happy, and has the even larger task of repairing the sector 7 plate. The other reason that he has a cat Daemon, is that his alter-ego, Cait sith is a cat, based upon the Scottish myth of the cat-sìthe, or Cat King. mòrdha means ‘great and noble’ in Scottish Gaelic.
--
Professor Hojo
Daemon: Golden Orb-weaver Spider Daemon Name: Atsuko Looks: A mostly yellow-golden spider with a white head and black legs. She has black wave-like and white dot markings on her abdomen
She, like Hojo, has a curious mind and is excellent at bouncing and suggesting ideas to him, although whether he will listen to her ideas is up to the moment. It’s not uncommon to hear them talking to one another in their lab almost constantly, especially if something has piqued their interest.
Symbology: Spiders are creatures of two halves; they both repulse us with their many legs and horrid fangs, and captivate us with their impressive creativity. Hojo combines these two aspects of the spider into grotesque, horrific activities, actions and thinking. Atsuko is a Japanese name that means ‘Honest child’
--
Scarlet
Daemon: Eurasian Mink Daemon Name: Dara Looks: A rather dark-looking mink with a white snout and jaw. He has silver-blue eyes
While mostly silent, he keeps watch on others, muttering to Scarlet about what he’s seen, especially if they can both use it as a weakness. He’s often seen lounging across Scarlet’s shoulders, as if he were simply a stole.
Symbology: Mink are symbols of wealth and luxury, as in the early 20th century, Mink coats and stoles were popular among wealthy elite women who used the fur as statuses of wealth and power. Mink themselves are hardy predators that usually dine on fish or crustaceans, giving them a harsh bite. Dara is a Persian name that means ‘wealthy’.
--
Heidegger
Daemon: Indian Boar Daemon Name: Frauke Looks: A large grey sow with a pepper-black mane and scuffed pink nose.
Just as loud and as boisterous as Heidegger himself, she too loves her seat of power over other daemons and uses her strength to intimidate and bully others.
Symbology: Boars are usually painted as headstrong, stubborn and prone to bursts of anger- all of which Heidegger displays as a well known warmonger. Frauke is a German name that means ‘little lady’
--
Palmer
Daemon: Saanen Goat Daemon Name: Maayan Looks: An almost entirely white goat with a brown splotch on her back and rump. She’s quite plump.
Maayan is just as enthusiastic as Palmer is and is more often than not more childish than he is in what should be serious situations.
Symbology: Goats are known for eating almost anything, and Palmer is known for liking his cuisine, as well as being described as ‘kiddish’. Saanen goats in particular are known for their large milk quantities which can be made into an assortment of dairy products. Maayan means ‘water spring’ in Hebrew
--
Prs. Shinra
Daemon: Red Fox Daemon Name: Alecto Looks: A dusky, muted red fox with stelle-grey eyes. She has several notches on both ears.
Cold and ruthless, she gets what she wants when she wants it, and nothing will stop her. However her age is getting her her bones and while she feels weaker than she did in her youth, she’s not going to let anyone else know.
Symbology: foxes are known for their greed for anything that isn’t theirs, and their use of cunning and all they have to get it. President Shinra will use any means necessary to achieve his goals and will not stop at anything to quash anyone who opposes him. Alecto is a name of the Greek Erinyes of morality, and means ‘unceasing anger’.
--
Rufus Shinra
Daemon: Doberman Pinscher Daemon Name: Umbra Looks: An inky-black dog with a mean look about her.
A mystery to read to all but Rufus himself. However her mean looks reflect her personality: cruel and grasping for power
Symbology: Dobermans were originally bred to be guard dogs, but in recent media they have been portrayed as vicious and mean attack dogs. Rufus, while like his father- wishes to ‘rule the world’ so to speak, he wants to do it with fear and intimidation rather than outright deception. Umbra means ‘Shadow’ in Latin, as well as being the concept name for the name of Rufus’ attack dog before it was changed to ‘Darkstar’.

a wip of my ninjago oc, Hifumi Kumonosu
she is a Jorōgumo and uses she/he/they pronouns.
Jorōgumo are born when a golden orb weaver spider reaches 400 years of age. They can shapeshift, often taking the form of beautiful women. They prey on humans, mainly young men. Written in modern kanji (絡新婦), the word translates to “Binding Bride,” though the original written form (じょろうぐも) translates to “Whore Spider”
Hifumi’s abilities include shapeshifting and spinning incredibly strong webs. they are also skilled in tessenjutsu and possess a venom that can render people immobile. she has to actively choose to inject the venom, however, has to bite the receiver. he also has minor powers of suggestion, which they use mainly to lure in humans for food.
their last name, Kumonosu, is the squished-together romanized form of 蜘蛛の巣, or spiderweb, in Japanese. it’s a hint at his nature as a Jōrogumo, though it flies over many people’s heads.
while Hifumi’s preferred food is humans, she’s partial to human food as well. they’re especially fond of meat dishes. he also has a major sweet tooth.
he’s a relatively young Jōrogumo at 509 years of age.
her top is cropped from an old kimono of his.
as you can probably assume, i ship them with Garmadilf.

Jorogumo Sero
I didn’t manage to finish this in time for Halloween but it’s always time for Creatures and I’ve been thinking about more interesting possibilities for fantasy/magic au’s. I thought his costume patterning would fuse well with something golden orb-weaver inspired (also called jorogumo – they share the same name as the mythological creature in japanese), although i very much did not use the orb weaver web patterns. Spiderphane has a couple of forms which vary from passes-as-human to very monstrous. He also has some interesting web-magic (orb weaver silk is actually used for experiments in tissue engineering... I’m not saying ‘magic healer spider’ but that’s exactly what I’m saying.)
I had a lot of fun with him and he is absolutely riddled with glitter, so I hope you all enjoy him too.

I’m curious if there’s any Fox Fae, and what court they’d be in. Linda is a cat, Deceit is a snake, Virgil is a spooder and to my knowledge most of those three are unseelie. Do most animal like fae fall under the Unseelie court?
there’s not tendency toward any animal irt to court - there could be a Summer who was a spider like Virgil (i am suddenly attached to the idea of a golden orb weaver Summer)
fun fact! Logan was actually originally going to be fox-ish gentry, before i decided on having Eirwen being a banshee and Logan a Green Man so i could get that sweet sweet gentry vs. wild fae drama
so there definitely could be a fox fae, and the only reason i haven’t done it yet is because i’m a little concerned it might get mistaken for a kitsune and i do NOT wanna be sticking my ignorant white nose in japanese traditions and fucking it up spectacularly

Jorogumo
In Japan, some spiders are known to possess amazing supernatural powers. One of these, the jorō-gumo, known as the golden orb-weaver in English, is the most well-known of the arachnid yokai. Jorō-gumo are found all over the Japanese archipelago, except for Hokkaido. Their body size averages between two to three centimeters long, but they can grow much larger as they age; some are large enough to catch and eat small birds. These spiders are renowned for their large size, their vividly beautiful colors, the large and strong webs they weave, and for the cruel destruction they wreak on young men. Their name is written with kanji that mean “entangling bride.” However, these characters were added on to her name much later to cover up the original meaning of the name: “whore spider.”
Jorō-gumo live solitary lives, both as spiders and as yokai. They are skillful deceivers and powerful shapeshifters, usually spending their lives appearing as young, sexy, and stunningly beautiful women.
Jorō-gumo’s favorite prey is young, handsome men who are looking for love. When a jorō-gumo spots a man she desires, she invites him into her home, and he is usually never seen again. A jorō-gumo can operate like this for years and years, even in the middle of a busy city, while the desiccated skeletons of hundreds of youth build up in her home.
The Edo period legend has it that a beautiful woman would entice a man into a quiet shack and begin to play a Biwa, a type of Japanese lute. While the victim was distracted by the sound of the instrument, she would bind him in spider silk threads in order to devour the unsuspecting person as her next meal.
According to legend, when a spider turns 400 years old, it gains magical powers. Stories of Jorōgumo can be found in Edo period works, such as "Taihei-Hyakumonogatari" (太平百物語) and "Tonoigusa" (宿直草). In many of these stories, Jorōgumo changes its appearance into a beautiful woman to ask a samurai to marry her, or takes the form of a young woman carrying a baby (which may turn out to be a spider's eggsack).
Drawings, such as the one in Toriyama Sekien's book Gazu Hyakki Yakō, depicts Jorōgumo as a half-woman/half-spider surrounded by her spider children.
A Jorōgumo is also known as the mistress of the Jōren Falls (浄蓮の滝) in Izu, Shizuoka. The legend has it that a man was resting at the foot of the waterfall when his feet were bound with a vast number of spider threads. To free himself, he cut the threads and tied them to a stump of a tree, which was pulled from the ground and drawn into the waters.
After this incident at the Jōren waterfall, the villagers became afraid and stopped going to the waterfall. However, one day, a woodsman logger from out of town, unaware of the story of the Jōren Jorōgumo, began cutting wood in the area. After he accidentally dropped his axe into the water, he dove into the pool to find it; then a beautiful woman appeared and returned the axe, telling him never to tell anyone about her. While the logger kept the promise, he began to feel anxious about the incident. One day while he was drunk, he told his secret and finally felt at ease. He then fell into a deep sleep never to awaken again.
In a variation of the story of the Jōren waterfall, the logger falls in love with the woman Jorōgumo and starts visiting the falls every day to see her. But as time passes, he starts growing weaker and weaker. A monk from a neighboring temple believes the logger has been trapped by the spider, so he and the logger go to the waterfall together, and the monk reads a Buddhist Sūtra there. While the monk reads the sutra, spider threads appear from the pool and attempt to wrap themselves around the logger, but the monk shouts his Buddhist chant and they disappear. Though the logger soon realizes that the woman was a spider, he cannot forget his love for her. He then asks for help from a Tengu, master of the Yōkai of the mountain, but the Tengu forbids this love. The logger was unwilling to give up his love for the Jorōgumo. While running back to the waterfall he is caught by the silk threads and finally falls into the water, never to surface again.
There are many stories throughout Japan of a tree stump being pulled into the water in place of the lumberjack from the previous tale. One such example is that of Kashikobuchi (賢淵), Sendai. Here, just after the stump is pulled into the pool, the lumberjack hears a voice saying, "How clever, how clever" (賢い、賢い / Kashikoi, Kashikoi). For this event, the area came to be called Kashikobuchi, which literally means "clever abyss". In Kashikobuchi, the Jorōgumo is worshiped as a goddess who protects people from drowning, and a monument and a small Torii still stand at the location.

Jorōgumo
Appearance
In Japan, some spiders are known to possess amazing supernatural powers. One of these, the jorōgumo, known as the golden orb-weaver in English, is the most well-known of the arachnid yokai. Jorōgumo are found all over the Japanese archipelago, except for Hokkaido.
Behavior
Jorōgumo live solitary lives, both as spiders and as yokai. When a golden orb-weaver reaches 400 years of age, it develops magical powers and begins to feed on human prey instead of insects. They make their nests in caves, forests, or empty houses in towns. They possess a cunning intelligence and a cold heart, and see humans as nothing more than insects to feed on. They are skillful deceivers and powerful shapeshifters, usually spending their lives appearing as young, sexy, and stunningly beautiful women.
Interactions
Jorōgumo’s favorite prey is young, handsome men who are looking for love. When a jorōgumo spots a man she desires, she invites him into her home, and he is usually never seen again. They can spin silk threads strong enough to ensnare a grown man so that he cannot escape. They also have a powerful venom that can slowly weaken a man day by day, allowing the spider to savor the long and painful death her victim suffers. They can control other, lesser spiders, even employing fire-breathing spiders to burn down the homes of any who grow suspicious of them. A jorōgumo can operate like this for years and years, even in the middle of a busy city, while the desiccated skeletons of hundreds of youth build up in her home.

Jorōgumo! Fantastic spider lady monster! I just found out about this and I love it.
The Jorōgumo is a threatening creature that can take on the form of a human or spider, so it fits into two different kinds of yōkai, supernatural phenomena in Japanese folklore- oni, which could mean anything scary or threatening but usually a shapeshifting demon or ogre; and bakemono, any oddly shaped scary creature but especially a shapeshifter.
She disguises herself as a beautiful woman to lure men into her lair, transforms into a spider, kills them slowly with a painful venom, and eats them. The Jorōgumo's silk is strong enough to capture a grown man and in some stories, she can control other spiders.
Jorōgumo first appears in writing from the Edo period (1603-1868), but it likely existed before that in oral folklore.
The word Jorōgumo comes from "jorō", prostitute, a word also associated with "jōrō", women who waited on female royalty. Other names for Jorōgumo include binding bride, entangling bride, whore spider, and harlot spider.
So why a spider? Might be because women are depicted as ensnaring men with their beauty and sexual appeal, like a spider catching flies. Or because weaving, spinning, and textile production are areas historically dominated by women. The actual jorō spider, the golden orb weaver, is huge and spins yellow silk, so it's easy to see why they'd be given supernatural powers. While the male jorō spiders are averagely sized and brown, the females can be red, yellow, or black and have a body length of 1.5 inches and a leg span of 3-4 inches. That's four times larger than the males! Their webs can catch small birds and bats!
