hey guys i have a fun post courtesy of my partner!!!! i forced pixel to tell me pixels thoughts about one piece characters because i love one piece n pix literally knows NOTHING about it
luffy - oh my god its luffy!!!! hes a strawhat!!!! like the leader of or a member of the strawhat pirate gang... i know hes like super silly and goofy and smiley. and a little bit stupid! ( showing pixels mom ) this is a stupid looking boy right there!!!
zoro - i think this ones zoro? i dont know much about him. i know hes dumb, hes pretty strong, he has green hair. and pronouns.
nami - thats nami!! emma ( my wief ) likes her. i know shes smart. or at least comparatively smart. umm. she looks pretty happy and bubble!! i know she's like the girl™
sanji - sanji... i think hes like rich? i know that one breaking bad artist likes him. its funny i followed this person like a year ago for breaking bad and i get to see all of their interests.... like arrogant? also pretty stupid?? i think thats like the strawhat gangs thing like theyre not very smart. hes got a cigarette in all of these pictures. okay why do his eyebrows look like that?? those are terrible!
usopp - oh i dont know his name. is that usopp? i do know his name! he has a brother, that's all i know about him. ( he does not have a brother ) he doesn't? ( no you're thinking of his dad, yasopp ) ..... yaassss
tony tony chopper - ITS TONY CHOPPER!!!! if it wasnt tony chopper i was gonna be like "i didnt know there was more of them"! ( there are more of them these are just my favorites ) ... ohhh
what else about tony chopper... he has that song about him! and you like him!! hes a very cute little guy. little creature. little.. moose?
yamato - YAMATO!!!! HES MY FAVIE ALSO!!!! i even knew him before you got into one piece because he's that awesome!! hes like... an oni?? he's like don quixote for an oni. i appreciate that they put a man with big boobies in something, its nice to see that representation. not in a sexual way, like actually there are a lot of trans men out there.

So. Its out. This is obviously pretty awesome sauce (sorry not sorry jas) and like.
wow.
so it started, middle/late 2011, almost 12 years ago. Some silly little university kids making a stupid horror puppet show. Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling, creating Dont Hug Me Im Scared. What a way to start of the 2010s huh.
After a series of short videos, created for the Kickstarter, the sequel was created. Tony The Talking Clock was he spectacle of 2014 tumblr, eventually winning the most coveted title a fictional outcast could probably get, ‘Tumblr Sexyman.’ The fandom at this time was WILD, with the whole IceHell genre and the ‘Paige x Tony’ fanatics. Not to mention that kids react video.
Tumblr media
At this same year, my personal skrunkle scrimblo came around. The Love Cult was introduced by the ringleader Shrignold, worshipping a stone who they fed gravel. Nobody knows why or how the living FUCK they managed to start a cult like this, but here we go. This was the first time the gang was seen outside, and this circled around Yellow Guy (whos a pig??)
Along comes 2015, introducing the absolute LEGEND, COLIN. THE. COMPUTER. Legend in the making, stupid self absorbed fucktwat, and the computery guy!! Also, the outro was a bop. By now, the DHMIS community had grown a fanbase, the watch count of the series so far over 3 Million!!1!
Tumblr media
AND NOW. THIS IS WHEN SHIT GETS REAL!!
dhmis five. the talking point of every internet kids trauma. This episode was about being helfy!,2 Joined by the silly goofy Healthy Band, duck guy and yellow (red guy, whered he go?) learned all about why you shouldnt eat food from a strangers plate!! What made DHMIS special was its unsettling gore, which was shown perfectly in the scene where duck gets his. organs took out! graphically! Awesome!
then the finale came. dhmis 6, 2016, 6. years ago now. 6 whole years. introducing the harsh reality of the real world, the absoloute CHAD which we call Larry, Lars, Larson, Lamp Guy, THE LAMP1!11 Teaching (drunk, on drugs, sleep deprived, who knows?) yellow guy all about the wonderful dreams you can have, including eating a drink, buying a hat, losing your friends and drowning in oil of course! This episode was what made this whole puppet show a real nightmare. skrunkle yellow guy gets (unfortunately) mind-tortured by all the teachers, including the saxaphone. still really wanna know how to buy a canoe. At the end, we finally found out who was the brains behind all of this, none other than yellow guys DAD himself, ROY. This is why, perhaps, this whole fever dream nightmare was based around June 19th Fathers day. This is what, we all though, the end was. 5 years of youtube wonder, Becky Joe and Baker created a phenomenon that shocked the internet in perhaps a million different ways. But the positive feedback was overwhelming, woohoo!
By now, the improvement was MASSIVE. as shown below :
And now. This is when we all thought it was over. Until 2 years later, in 2018, all hope was lost. Until those 2 words,
WAKEY WAKEY!!
this was a 30 second short trailer for the DHMIS Pilot, showing at the 2019 Sundance film festival!
This is where it gets a bit weird, because not only is the original Wakey Wakey deleted, the full thing was never shown anywhere else. the only surviving footage of this was the bad quality pirated videos , with those 2 girls laughing thunderously in the background. A new sexyman, MEAN STEVE (🤤, sorry not sorry) WAS INTRODUCED! WE ALL WANNA SEE HIM IN HIS FULL METAL STICK GLORY! But nah we didnt get that. We didnt get a show, which we all because suspicious of.
Tumblr media
well. thats what we thought.
2020. the year of the corona. no hope, isolation. until a lovely woman named Becky Sloan posted a lil thing on her instagram. ‘Were making a tv shooowwww! 📺👀📺👀📺👀📺👀’ AND THIS IS WHERE IT GOT WILDER AWESOMER EPICER!!! WE WAITED AND WE WAITED AND WE FINALLY GOT SOME CONFIRMATION! THIS WAS AWESOME! it got picked up by a charity project by the name of BFI YAC,, hoping to pick up on small industries work! AND IT DID!
time went by, still no show. we all thought it was over, cancelled, whatever.
2021 ROLLS PAST.
FILMING WAS WRAPPED! IN THE TIME WE WERE ALL GRIEVING AT THE THOUGHTS OF NO TV SHOW, THEY WERE WORKING ON IT THE WHOLE TIMEEE!!
‘WAKEY WAKEY’ as the fandom called it at the time, was coming!
now we wait. until FEB 25 2022. They finished the final sound recording. It was all done, we were all waiting for that special day, June 19th
, Fathers day. , 3 months ago.
and what did we get?
FLY.
Tumblr media
THE TRAILER FOR THE NEW SHOW, PREMIERING CHANNEL 4 IN SEPTEMBER!! OH !EM GEE!
Now, we were all anticipating for the new series, we waited EXTREMELY PATIENTLY for this, 4-5 years no less. Honestly we shoulda won an award for the most patient fandom at this point.
SEPTEMBER 2022!
Tumblr media
WE GOTTA GET THINGS READY FOR THS BIG DAY! BIG DAY! THE TRAILER WAS OUT! COMING SEPTEMBER 13TH!
but then, disaster struck! ohh no!
HRH Queen Elizabeth fell ill and kicked the bucket. Obviously , this meant not only is the country in ruins now lol! (fuck liz truss basically) But the show (we thought) was in jeopardy! (not really) The 10 days of mourning began, and the All 4 Website announced that the show would be slightly delayed, but coming this month.
THIS MONTH! NOW! FRIDAY 23RD, 2022. THE BIG DAY HAS ARRIVED! 6 SHINING BRAND NEW EPISODES, PREPARED FOR THE BIG TV DEBUT FRIDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER!
Tumblr media
THE IMPROVEMENT, BY NOW WAS STUNNING AWESOME EPIC!! LOOKLOOKLOOK!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this new series, which is 1 day old!! fresh new awesome! is AMAZING! 3 WHOLE HOURS FULL OF OUR FAVE TRAFFIC LIGHT TRIO!
(Yes. we know, you still find red guy sexy.)
(AND COLIN. AND THE LAMP. AND A BIT OF TONY TOO!)
JUST THREE OF THEM! CLAYHILL HAD, UNFORTUNATELY, SHRIVELLED UP OR SOMETHING! (I RECKON)
this was obviously a sign that Wakey Wakey is now Lost Media. But we got this! all thanks to that one silly dumb stupid epic 3 minute long short on youtube, made by 2 people, in their free time, DONT HUG ME IM SCARED!
This post is basically, appreciation for Becky Joe and Baker, and the fandom, and everyone who helped in the making of this phenomenon!
Along the way, we’ve encountered our askblogs, most notably @sketchbook-and-tony-adventures !! And the awesome, probably most noted artists of DHMIS tumblr, the epic awesome amazing @amii-stuff @frootrollup? whats the username again? @hecklefreckled & @bernold ! Obviously more as well but i honestly dont remember the usernames :/ And our epic news sharer @creative-time !! Thanks you guys! And some awesome others, like @creechurfoundincheckerboardvoid @dhmispaint and the bezzie mate @xzumichannn !! Woohoo! Thank you guys so much, without this crazy massive fandom, we probably wouldnt have even got this far, crazy right!
So far, the best moments of this 2011-2022 era for me have been
- ‘Where are all you nasty clockfuckers! did you finally fuck that clock?’
- Sketch has a small face
- LisWeegee Adventures In Lurning dubs
- Whoever the heck that spanish dhmis gacha person is!
- That one ‘No bitches’ meme with shrignold :
Tumblr media
- My amazing askblog i could never be bothered to do!
- Whoever that tiktok guy is
- “FREELANCERS DESERVE TO DIE!”
- Money Man. Deserves to be a sexyman fr!
- “BYE GUYS! I LOVE YOU!”
- Hearing the first few seconds of the first episode intro. those bells man. something, a feeling im never gonna feel again. ever. something i could experience only once.
The only bad thing. LAMPS SOBERED UP?? WHERED THE DRUGGIE INSOMNIAC VOICE GO?
Anyways. I love yall your all awesome, were finally trending on tumblr again, and we all have worms in our brain!
What have we got to look forward to now?
- DELTARUNE NEW CHAPTERS, 2023? The finale will probably be ready for 2027…
thats literally it. sorry. Hazbin Hotels coming to tv? i guess? lol.
this is obviously a national highlight of 2022 🥱 well no. Its internationally an internet milestone. duh!
LONG LIVE DHMIS!!

Splatoon and Commercial Countercultures
When Splatoon came out it actually reminded me a lot of Jet Set Radio.
Tumblr media
Not necessarily game-play, but the imagery and themes in both games. Both are about music, urban life, fashion, and turf wars fought between rival gangs through graffiti. The color palettes of both games are a mix of urban greys and beige and vivid bright colors. Even the “hosts” or “narrators” of both games being musician media personalities. I’m not the only one who sees this. There is a lot of “Jet Squid Radio” fanart mashing up the two games, even this song.
Tumblr media
But I think major difference is summed up by the fact that in Jet Set Radio, the bad guys are the cops.
In Jet Set Radio, you are in an actual gang fighting other gangs, the DJ is running an licensed pirate radio station, the fascist police force have no problem shooting someone who is merely defacing public property, and the big bad is a corporation trying to swallow the entire city.
And in Splatoon, the “turf war” battles are a commercially-organized team sport, re-enacting a war that took place 100 years ago in which the opposing Octolings were banished to underground bunkers. In Splat 1 and 2 the solo missions are to fight the Octolings. The game even takes time to mention that the ink you paint vanishes after the match is over, so you are not actually defacing public property. (To be clear, all of these things are much more conservative and much less subversive)
One thing want to make clear is although I am highlighting the contrasts between these two games because of their relative similarities, Splatoon was never obligated to be Jet Set Radio, and I am not trying to criticize the game for being something it was never intending to be. Jet Set Radio was made by a smaller studio, with less restrictions, and at the time SEGA was taking bigger risks on trying to court its target audience.
But that being said, no matter how much I love Splatoon, I feel like it doesn’t have anything to say at all. These aren’t anti-authority, anti-capital games, or games that ask tough questions at all. They’re games about supporting a status quo. I think Octo Expansion and parts of Splatoon 3 explore some interesting topics, but never in a way I think is all that challenging.
And obviously, Nintendo is never going to say anything radical in the same way that Disney isn’t going to either. And a game marketed to an older audience can have a edgier message than a game marketed to all ages. But I think its an example of how counter cultures get hijacked by corporations, which then have the power to change and control the messaging of these cultures.
Tumblr media
Brands need authenticity, they need cultural relevance. Culture is just extremely important in marketing. Corporations are always going to be the loudest voice with the furthest reach, so when a corporation takes over a culture or movement, the corporation has more power to control the messages, values, even practices and beliefs of the culture than the people who belong to that culture. And that means that if a culture’s beliefs run contradictory to the needs of a corporation, the corporation can co-opt that culture and redirect its messaging and values.
A kind of goofy but very recent example was the “De-influencer” movement on Tiktok. It started as a reaction to trends like #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt, where consumers just showed off products they purchased after seeing them on TikTok. A slew of TikTok users tried leveraging their influence to tell people to stop buying products because it isn’t worth it. De-influencing sprang from a place of authenticity. But in a matter of days, Influencers hijacked the movement and changed its message. Instead of “don’t buy things you don’t need,” they quickly used the hashtag to pan certain products and tell viewers to buy alternatives instead. Just completely reversing the intent of the message and intent of the original movement.
In the fifteen years between Jet Set Radio and Splatoon 1, street art and graffiti culture has gone mainstream. Businesses are decorating their walls with street art. My office took our team to a “street art class” to learn graffiti. So, the reason why Nintendo could make a game about street art is because by that point street art had gone mainstream. We are also seeing an industry that is maturing, getting more refined and relying less on riskier strategies.
Tumblr media
If I had to interpret the intent behind Splatoon, I’d say they were trying to create a fun, colorful space where self-expression is encouraged, and the teen characters are unburdened by authority figures. These things are all very “safe” for a mainstream audience. And I think that is why the games accidentally attracted a huge queer audience. To a queer audience, those things (fun, colorful, self-expressive, no authority) are all still radical ideas.
Maybe it was a perfect storm of different little things that add up to a product the LGBTQ community cares about. The shooter genre is bleak and often pretty toxic, and Splatoon created a space for a niche audience that rejects those things. The characters themselves are androgynous and fluid, and you’re free to dress and style yourself however you’d like. There is a lot of unopposed freedom that its going to be attractive to certain communities. Splatoon accidentally made the type of sandbox that a queer gamer audience wanted to inhabit.
And while Splatoon’s queer following might not have a major influence on how future Splatoon games are made, it doesn’t discount the fact that the LGBTQ community has a strong presence in online Splatoon spaces. Corporations can try and control the message, but they can’t control how we think or suppress counter cultures.
And I guess I am also considering some of my own thoughts about the two games as well. I know this is all over the place, sorry. Jet Set Radio was made for people of my generation, which is why it resonates with me more. Different generations need different messages and that’s fine. But either way, corporations still have the power of what messages go out there. I doubt SEGA would publish a game like this now if it was brand-new, but they wouldn’t have published it in 2000 either if the message was too contradictory with SEGA’s goals. Capital is not going to release anything with a message that is a threat to its bottom line.

EoM update Pt.2
BACK TO TALKING ABOUT THE GOOFY GANG Last part was Marius, Lethica, and Jericho NOW BIG GRAVEDIGGER MAN PLEASE CARRY ME Yorgrim. YORGI!!! This guy is my favorite type of big guy. He's a caretaker of sorts, ODDLY ESPECIALLY IWTH MARIUS?? He's a big guy with a big tombstone on his back!! Someone hug him because that guilt is WAY HEAVIER THAN YA'LL THINK IT IS. Poor guy. He's not used to having friends or family, its very clear by how he acts. He's not able to like- figure out how to act with people he's close too. But its clear he cares about them alot. He gives up alot to keep them safe (flashback to Marius in the basement of the crooked house.) He doesn't want to loose anyone else but he just really cares. BUT HE'S A STUBBORN BASTARD. Especially with people he hates, if he hates you his STUBBORN MAN. (*cough* Billy Van Brunt). Anyways love this goofy gravedigger and his feelings and his care. He's a good guy, I want him to carry me. please. please. I wanna ride on his shoulders. Please please please please ple- MUSHROOM FLAVORED LESBIAN Farryn. Farryn is just great, I love her accent and she's got some goofy quotes. She's caring and loving, she loves the earth and her friends. SHE DOESN'T FEAR NO DEATH!! But she does fear centipedes LOL. She's fun, I love how she'll be very serious when she says certain stuff but its so damn FUNNY i can't do it. She's also a gay Icon we love her, protect her, we love the forest girlies. She's always reassuring Jericho when he's sad and making sure to do what she can to keep her friends safe along with any other lil humans or wild animals she meets. Skinny legend (I do hope she's okay I'm halfway through the campaign and she's not eaten anything but sap and a sprig of rosemary) SKITTERING SCRAMBLING PIRATE ZOMBIE VOODOO GUN Briggsy. *sigh's deeply* I do love him. I love him lots his silly and goofy and his recklessness is REALLY FUNNY. I do wish he was a little less GREEDY but i know that his whole shtick and I can't lie i do love him for it. Greedy Lizardfolk Warlocks are a bit of a trend, and I'm here for it. I dig the VooDoo gun. And the way he's just- I don't even know how to describe it. WATCH THE CAMPAIGN YOU'LL UNDERSTAND. He's like irresponsible, but in a funny way, and he depends on his friends more than he'd like to admit. I love him, "He's pretty funny" <- read in Dereks voice for full affect. The whole "Not It!!" thing for his character works well and I just find it hilariously.

Heyo so I say your severen birthday post and it got me thinking. So I went to Disney world for my birthday and I was thinking what if severen takes his mate and the gang to Disney 😭(at night of course) I can see Jess and sev eating a turkey leg and Caleb and Mae taking a romantic walk and diamond dragging homer to get photos 😭
I srsly love this I definitely don't watch Near Dark and think Disneyworld but it's so perfect bc they've lived so long you can't tell me they haven't been to an amusement park including disneyworld with how huge it is.
I bet ur b day was fun!!! I went to that place ONE time at 8 years old and it quite literally rained on my parade and some of the rides 🥲 It was thundering and cloudy during the wait for the haunted mansion which was my favorite so that was a neat memory tho. So if I'm rusty, srry I have vague memories there 😭
Severen Taking his S/O to Disneyworld
Tumblr media
- For one, they definitely did not have money to go in, not even 80's money. They probably couldn't steal enough or didn't care to so they snuck in somehow (Severen is old af and probably knows a secret entrance from when it was first built.)
- Severen found a micky mouse hat with ears and wore it just to be goofy
- Speaking of goofy...Severen and Jesse scare the actors in costume there. Severen definitely took a picture with you but whispered some terrifying shit in Goofy's ear just to watch him try to run in those shoes (He laughed his ass off too.)
- You are so right!! Severen and Jesse are eating the most basic, filling foods. He may sample your dole whip or funnel cake but he rarely eats this type of human food and he's making it worth it by eating a huge turkey leg.
- You all definitely cut in line...Do you think SEVEREN is going to stand for an hour or more for rides??? He is finding a way in probably from killing and drinking a staff member and getting their key cards to use backdoors.
- Jesse and DB venture off to Epcot just to leisurely stroll around sample different foods and listen to music and dance together...They still get odd looks and creep everyone out. A child definitely cried when Jesse stared them down for staring at him first.
- Caleb and Mae are hand in hand in line to go on the haunted mansion (It's just so they can makeout in the cars after Mae gets 'scared'. They rarely get alone time in the group.)
- Homer goes off adventuring by himself (He just doesn't want anyone see him actually enjoy peter pans flight like a kid.)
- You and Sev go on an adventure. He is high energy, playful, adventurous and eager to do things so expect for him to ask you where to go but if you say 'it's up to you'...He is dragging you everywhere 🤣
- Severen's favorite rides are actual Rollercoasters that have his adrenaline pumping (Imagine if he's never been on one? He'd love it!) the crazier the better and that nut job is laughing his ass off while your screaming...This man would love Tower of Terror or Rock n Rollercoaster or even more 'tame' rides like ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter if he got to see it before it closed
- He does enjoy more lowkey rides though like a ferris wheel or haunted mansion if it involves you cuddle up to him but please do not take him on its a small world he will complain the entire time and if he's got that damn song stuck in his head; he's blaming you ☠️
- Homer loves it bc even tho he wants to be perceived as an adult; this is the one place he goes and being a kid actually gets him better treatment than everyone else in the group.
- Mae loves talking to the princesses and Caleb loves the rides he rode as a kid before Sarah was even born like Space Mountain or Pirates of the Caribbean
- DB loves the family time you all rarely get often going your seperate ways to feed everynight
- You all meet back up at least an hour before it closes to spend that 'family time' together.
- Severen or Jesse or both know the most unsettling deaths and secrets about the place and Severen points out "Oh some girl was crushed between those two walls" too casually. Severen acted like he was going to jump in the water on Jungle Cruise claiming there's actual alligators and when you told him "Nuh uh" he was going to prove it. You just about yanked him off his feet to sit back down
- Everyone argues over what the last 'family' attraction should be
- If it involves shooting and competition tho? Every single one of them from Jesse to Caleb is having a blast
- You probably convince them to go on splash mountain just for the picture at the end. Sadly someone had to sit out (Jesse or DB for sure) So in order: Jesse or DB in the back, Homer, You, Guess Who, Mae, Caleb 😭
Tumblr media
- You are so right DB is dragging Homer to take photos like the Mom she is 🥰
- You all stay to watch some fireworks but sneak back out halfway through before everyone else starts leaving
- The night is young and you all go get ACTUAL nourishment with blood but it's a fun time and you all have souvenirs from pics to merchandise
- Severen definitely won, stole or even bought you a cute niche character merch you love to keep for ur special day 💞

💖 and/or 😈 for your ask meme if they haven't been done yet?
Thank you so much for the ask! <3 I’m so, so indecisive so I just kind of rabbled but THANK YOU for giving me an excuse🙏😂
For 💖:
I LOVE Alejo & Sofia! WNSD is really cool as a series in that the Gang seems to skew a little older so it’s fun to see the Gang with a friend who has a wife/son/family.
I’m also huge into Rufus & Phylidia. I wrote some meta on them in the tags of this post and I have to give them a shout-out. :)
Crystal & Whirlen and Calvin Curdles & Alma Rumblebuns have very adorable side romances in Abracadabra Doo. I enjoy Crystal & Whirlen individually and I think their interactions are so cute! The bg behind Alma and Calvin is perfect and v romantic.
Lena & Simone is !!!! SO MANY THOUGHTS ABT THEM <3
Mayor Nettles & Sheriff Bronson Stone are very adorable together. I also loved his dynamic w/Fred Jones Sr.
THE OG MYSTERY INC from SDMI. It would have been really interesting to see more background on Ricky & Cassidy & Brad & Judy & Professor Pericles. There’s so many interesting dynamics between the core group, especially concerning how everything fell apart. The way they came together only to fall apart later on has so many details that never got fully explored but would have been legit fascinating to see!!! I was also always curious about how the five of them connected to Fred Jones Sr./what that dynamic was like. :)
For totally platonic relationships: I love Crystal & Amber from Alien Invaders, Penelope Bailey and her dad from WNSD’s Recipe for Disaster, and for some reason the dynamics of the band from Simple Plan and the Invisible Man is cute to me. The relationships between the fathers and daughters in Ghoul School also always really warmed my heart (esp The Mummy & Tanis 🥰).
THE HEX GIRLS!! they really deserve the chance to be developed further and I would die and kill for a piece of media that’d get to explore their relationships with each other further.
Surprisingly, I was also pretty touched by Muttley and Dick Dastardly’s bestie-ship in Scoob!
For 😈:
Velma & Omar in Where’s My Mummy. ICONIC. They have my heart!
Captain Cutler from SDWAY!! (and him in BCSD, my little guy). He’s my fav of the iconic WAY villains. His outfits, his vibe, love it!
Bill McLemore ❤️ he is literally so dumb and weird and I have a million random thoughts abt him and how much he loves baseball
^speaking of shout to my other baseball boy Bob Taylor from The Unnatural. we love a villain who commits crimes out of love 🥹
Also: Steve from Stage Fright (just a goofy guy)! Captain Skunkbeard from Pirates Ahoy (very!! good design)! Marcy from WNSD’s A Scooby Doo Halloween (she is my always and forever Corn Princess 👑)! Meadow from Homeward Hound! Phylidia from Riva Ras Regas (I love women)! Headless Horseman from TSDS! Green Giggling Ghosts/Phantom Shadows (I actually think they are THE most iconic Scooby Doo villains of all time)! The Ghost of Mother from BCSD! and Marcie Fleach if you count her ofc 😌

i have been meaning to ask you about your ocs as you talk about them but i don't really know much about them if you feel like give me an introduction to them
Hi! Sure :)
I have a lot of OCs so I'm just going to cover the ones I mention here a lot, and group them by story/project. The titles are not final. Tbh I haven't written in a while and some of these I haven't worked on in a few years, but they're always in heart anyway!
CW: mentions of child abuse, murder, violence
Thunderbride (AKA the pirate novel)
Rahlen
A pirate! In fact, she's the captain of her own ship, and known for being dangerous and ruthless.
She is holding a lot of anger about the way she was brought up
She's very abrasive, bossy, unpredictable and outright violent... But she's also very very intelligent and has a protective streak that she won't admit
I would say the thing that drives her the most is the need for control
Which is unfortunate because the story starts with her being betrayed by her crew, thrown in a cell, completely out of her depth and forced to rely on a bunch of nerds people who are not her first choice for a crew to get her ship back
Celis
One of said nerds
A blood witch. Also part of a marginalized community of magic users in this world
It's a family business and her mom and grandma are A Lot
Twenty-something year old living at home syndrome (so going insane) (or at least feels suffocated and confused)
Very talented but also very insecure. She's slowly learning not to take shit from others
Recently she realised her family's tactics of playing the tame and obedient minority will not protect her from harm
When her childhood... friend? weird mean kid who was her neighbor for a summer and disappeared without a trace? crush? shows up in her room half dead and asks her to come with her on a crazy adventure. Well. She just goes for it
Brazen Palace (series of spy/ gang novellas)
(but really they're about my girls and their relationship) (also there's some diplomacy going on)
Anika
A spy? Information thief? Secret operations doer? Occasional thug? Basically she made a career out of being good at climbing and shooting and sneaking places
Immigrated as a child to the country where the story takes place and lost her mother. She ended up under the wing of a gang leader who taught her everything she knows but also had a freakish amount of control over her life and eventually discarded her for money :/
She ends up working for another, very different boss. Suddenly she has more freedom than ever, but her jobs become more dangerous, her new gang hates her, and she accidentally killed her new roommate's best friend. oops
But really despite her bleak circumstances she's a huge goof ball and a very kind and loving (if cynical at first) person. She shows affection by being annoying and once she decides she likes you she will go very far to serve you
more things you should know about her: very nosey, always sleepy, and super tall
Henlie
Anika's new roommate, who is very upset and angry about having to share a room with the killer of her best friend. But their boss is adamant about it for some reason (spoiler: the reason is emotional manipulation)
Her job in the gang is unclear at first. She is very good at costume making, makeup, disguises and acting, if that gives you a clue. (it doesn't give Anika a clue because she's a dummy (affectionate) ).
Her mother left and her father is a disaster, so she left home young and started fending for herself. She's extremely secretive about her past and gets furious when others try to meddle. She's hurting and keeping it to herself, but it's getting harder now that she's dealing with more grief
She's so clever but also so jaded. She's the opposite of naive, but also very young and inexperienced and on the brink of an emotional breakdown
underneath it all she has a sense of humor and playfulness, if only there was a giant goofy snooping asshole in her room to help uncover it 😈
Tajan
Tajan shows up later on in the story, and even gets his own novella because I like him so much. He is a member of Anika and Henlie's gang and has been away on a mission for a while.
He is a huge language nerd and speaks five languages
Generally a very nice and charming guy. He can be physically dangerous, but his strength lies in his charisma and ability to connect with people. He also flirts for fun all the time
He was born in a relatively poor country. His parents thought they were sending him to get an education abroad, but it turned out to be a child labor scam. He is still dealing with the trauma from that.
He owes a lot to his current boss for helping him get out of that situation, and is very loyal and grateful to him. He might have to deal with some conflicting loyalties in the future
The Eye of Truth (epic fantasy coming of age with a cult element)
Tena
At 16, after her older sister is murdered by invaders one town over, Tena's parents arrange a marriage for her to keep her safely away from the border (and her notions of becoming a soldier). She used to be vibrant and rebellious, but the grief has numbed her. She's trapped.
On the way to the place where she's supposed to get married, she and her traveling companions (including her uncle/ bestie Will and the son of the local nobles, who is also being sent away) get attacked and taken captive by a revolutionary group seeking to upend the government and spread a new religion. And they are very interested in some of Tena's abilities (magic! plant magic even!)
She becomes the liaison between her friends and the captors. She resents the things they do, but they start drawing her in, and their teachings make more and more sense. Their leader, Safan, is extremely charismatic - and he can teach her about the powers she didn't know she had. And maybe she doesn't want things to go back to normal after all.
Her inner conflict is all about craving independence vs. being afraid to have it
She's kind of a tomboy, very headstrong and determined (once she starts feeling like herself again). Kind of naive but very resourceful and brave. She deals with a lot of anger and feelings of helplessness.
Ropes (more epic fantasy! Filled with the power of unlikely friendships)
Tarrey
one of my oldest OCs. I think I made her when I was 11.
She was abandoned (kind of) as an infant and raised by a traveling circus/ artist troop. She became a very talented acrobat. Despite being so appreciated, she’s convinced that her only worth to the others comes from the money she earns for the camp with her performances.
She is extremely harsh with herself and others. She holds herself to a nearly impossible standard and will not admit that she is exhausted.
She’s socially anxious and avoids the other members of the camp as much as she can. Her status as a high earner means people generally leave her be. She tells herself this is how she likes it, but she’s actually so lonely. The one time she made a friend outside of the camp, he disappeared when she came back from tour. So she’s quite distrusting.
also she’s been having some very strange (prophetic?) dreams
A disaster forces her to run away with the two other protagonists of this story (maybe I’ll talk about them another time) and it starts out as a miserable road trip and evolves into the most beautiful found family situation ever. Like seriously I care about them so much
That’s it for now! Thank you so much for sending this ask, it was so fun to remember all my children OCs again 🥹 As I said I have a bunch more but this is already super long hehe

"𝐈 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐍 𝐀 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐌." - headcanons/musings on Law's impulsive desires to help people (and leading into a further analysis on him supposedly not being a "good person".). As with every hc/musings thing I write up, this is way too long and includes Law novel spoilers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm still slowly working my way through the novel again but spent some time this afternoon just flipping through my notes on it, and it occurred to me that literally every time we've seen Law say he "doesn't know" why he did a thing and/or "it was only a whim", it really is as simple as because he's a good person who felt compelled to do so.
Aside from the notable going to help Luffy at Marineford, there are four instances of this particular word choice in the novel alone.
-- 𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐔𝐓.
Exhibit A: Law saves Bepo from Penguin & Shachi, then proceeds to bring him back to stay with him and Wolf. Bepo asks why Law is so nice to him and we see then-13 y/o Law musing, The reason I am so nice? I myself have no idea. "I acted on a whim," I simply answer.
Exhibit B: Law saves Wolf after an accident with one of his inventions leaves the old man with life-threatening injuries. Wolf, with his whole "We're not friends! This is a give & take system- you saved me, so now I owe you" mindset seriously pissed Law off with this. Mostly he's offended that Wolf would scrutinize Bepo, Penguin, and Shachi's intentions like this and counters that it was only natural the 3 wanted him to live; he'd taken all of them in and given them a home. Wolf asks Law what his motivation was, then, and Law gets very flustered and stutters his way through a response. "Hmm... Me... As a beginner doctor, it is my duty to come to the aid of any dying person... Le... let's say it's like a whim for me!"
Exhibit C: The 4 boys saving Pleasure Town from Artur Bacca. Rad thanks them all and Law simply responds, despite the injuries they'd all attained, "Oh, it's nothing, we acted on a whim." (16)
Exhibit D: After the boys set sail and earn their first mentions in Northern papers for putting an end to a pirate gang that's been going around kidnapping children to sell into slavery, the paper notes, "I acted on a whim!" These were the only words the captain of the crew of the "Heart" had uttered before resuming the sea aboard his submarine. (presumably 20+)
Now, first of all, let me just take a second to say here how much I love this kid for doing these things. I think it's really easy at this point to be like "Okay, yeah right, Law, everyone knows you're just a goofy kid with a bigger heart than you'd like to admit, just fess up already" - but. Given how early we see Law express the sentiment that "Anyway, I was never what you would call a 'good person'"(within the first 20 pages of the novel), here's the thing. I really don't think he's so much embarrassed/denying that that's his motivation as it is him honestly not realizing that's why he does the things he does.
We know he's an overthinker and needs everything to have a reason/meaning, from Cora-san deciding to help/(love?!) him to trying to figure out "how should the situation evolve" re: his new relationships with Wolf and Bepo. He does this whole in-depth "what was Cora-san to me?" reflection thing, asking questions like "Will I ever be able to carry affection for someone like that again?" He actually admits a lot of stuff to himself he'd never say out loud throughout the novel. But he never really ponders this beyond the "the reason I am so nice? I myself have no idea." which tells me it's seriously just never occurred to him. (Probably because, by thirteen years of age and no more than 20 pages into the novel, we see him think to himself "Anyway, I was never what you would call a 'good person'." in a way that suggests this was something he'd worked out and accepted a long time ago. I would venture to say even before the fall of Flevance, but that's a second write-up to follow here in a bit. <3
➡️ Part 2: ❝𝐀 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍.❞ (will come back and add a link once I'm done with that one).

I really didn't expect the thorough drink headcanons... But I need more, Freemind/Barmey fave music and stuff?
Barmey's favorite music:
He loves bad techno music and Dubstep but he thinks it's good
FAVORITE FAVORITE type of music though is stupid goofy songs from the ~2000's/90's, shit like Beer!/We Ran Out of CD Space by Psychostick, Humpty Dance by Digital Underground, One Week by Barenaked Ladies, The Bad Touch by Bloodhound Gang. Awful shit like that'
Absolutely still loves shitty meme music of any era. But especially older ones.
In terms of music for more normal people The Front Bottoms is one of his favorite bands (or would be depending on timeline)
Lowkey nightcore too but he's embarrassed
listens to a lot of video game osts too
MUSIC RELATED FUN FACT; Knows how to play Guitar and the flute, wants to learn drums but stopped being into instruments at some point so he never actually did.
Freemind's favorite music;
Listens to very similar shitty music to Barmey but he thinks that The Bad Touch is stupid (still lowkey likes it though) hates the humpty dance though
Godsmack and old rock like that are some of his favorites, still likes some newer rock songs though. Finger Eleven, NIN, 3 Doors Down, Disturbed stuff like that.
Fan of certain nickleback songs,
In a universe where he isn't in the past or whatever he def listens to 3OH!3
Goes fucking hard for songs like Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive
Absolutely has a lot of Musical songs memorized (modern major general from Pirates of Penzance is his fave though).
He loves Musical songs in general but he is more angry when he decides a musical is a bad musical and will be angry about it for a solid 8 years straight and WILL complain about their lack of good songs. Is somehow worse when there's exactly 1 song from a 'bad musical' that he enjoys.
Classical Music. He fucking loves classical music. He dances like a maniac to that shit
He PRETENDS he hates certain pop music/modern music/etc bc he needs to be special but he actually likes a lot of them but that's all secretly
MUSIC RELATED FUN FACT; wants to learn guitar. absolutely has no learned guitar

in defense of cutler beckett
it’s kind of a tradition of mine to periodically write “in defense of” essays for unpopular characters (see “in defense of celegorm” and “in defense of bunny corcoran” lol), and idk what it says about me that i frequently feel the urge to advocate in favor of characters that are deemed unlikable/ unredeemable/ unworthy of attention by their respective fandoms, but i’m rolling with it lol. anyway, today, i want to focus on lord cutler beckett from pirates of the caribbean, because the general consensus about him on tumblr these days is… pretty abysmal lol, but i think he deserves a closer look. beckett seems to be the vast majority of people’s least favorite character, and not in an ironic way like some of the characters in POTC are treated online, like oh haha yeah barbossa was kinda annoying for going all ghost zombie mode on everyone but also we love him, weird eclectic uncle vibes, woo!.... no, everyone just straight-up hates beckett. and look: i get it, i really do. beckett is a much “realer” villain than davy jones or barbossa or salazar or any of the other POTC baddies, and that makes him much easier to hate. he’s not a giant octopus or a cursed skeleton or a slimy ghost guy with mystical powers, he’s literally just some guy– and he’s an asshole of a guy, because he’s basically just a random capitalist who wants all our favorite characters swinging from the gallows because they’re getting in the way of his trading schemes. and, if you count the price of freedom as canon, he’s also a slave trader, which is pretty unambiguously terrible. but despite all that, i actually like beckett. in fact, he’s one of my favorite characters in POTC: although it’s important to note that when i say that, i’m in no way saying that i condone his actions or that i think he’s morally good. as i see it, it’s totally valid to enjoy villainous characters while also acknowledging that they’re evil/problematic/whatever and that their actions are not morally acceptable in the real world. but the realm of POTC– where people (including the “good guys,” might i add!) are murdering and backstabbing each other left and right, any and all historical accuracy has to be taken with several grains of salt, and occult magic and sea goddesses and evil fish-men casually exist– is pretty far from “the real world” if you ask me lol. but anyway, let’s get into it then, shall we! (adding a read-more bc this is LONG oop)
beckett gets a really bad rap in the POTC fandom not just because he’s a ‘problematic’ character, but because on the surface, he comes across as a very one-dimensional, and therefore boring, villain. there are certainly other not-so-morally-pure characters in POTC that don’t seem to get the same treatment beckett does… no one really seems to talk about how pintel and ragetti threatened to r*pe elizabeth in the curse of the black pearl, for example. but pintel and ragetti are goofy comedic relief fan faves, and they’re also on the “good side” (aka the side of the pirates), so they have some redeeming qualities. in contrast, beckett is unique in POTC– a franchise famous for morally complex characters– for his seeming complete lack of redemptive nuance. he’s easy to understand as a villain because he’s just one of those villains who’s bad just ‘cause he can be. and he sucks! he’s ruthless, he’s power-hungry and materialistic, he plots against the pirates simply because they’re an inconvenience to him, and he represents the unjust authority which jack sparrow and the “good guys” stand against. the law permits beckett to freely exploit people in the name of the east india company, but does not allow jack and his companions even a chance of survival if they’re caught: and he knows how unfair this is, and doesn’t care. but here’s the thing: at its core, POTC is a pirate story told by pirates. of course we’re going to root for jack, will, elizabeth, and the gang over characters like beckett and norrington… because the pirates are the ones in control of the narrative. if we want, we can choose to believe them when they show us how much beckett sucks (and to be fair, they’re largely right lol), but it’s sort of boring, i feel, to just readily absorb the story that’s made most prominently visible to us and not bother to examine other perspectives.
so let’s talk about beckett’s motives. maybe he really is power-hungry and exploitative because he just is, and that’s all there is to him… but again, that’s what the pirates think, but it’s worth considering other possibilities too. what is beckett’s backstory, then– what, if anything, prompted him to go on his pirate-killing spree? well, in the movies, he doesn’t have one. he kinda just shows up one day and crashes will and elizabeth’s wedding as an obnoxious power flex, and from that point on, he’s just, like, there and he hates the pirates REALLY bad and wants to kill them all through any means possible, seemingly just because he can. the price of freedom, though, does give beckett a backstory. i’m not going to summarize the entire thing here, but in it, he and jack once worked together for the east india co. before eventually having a big mutual betrayal where jack wasn’t a fan of the fact that beckett was transporting some slaves, so he freed them all, which fucked beckett’s career over so beckett branded him as a pirate and then went on to become the asshole we see in the movies. but to be honest, this doesn’t really compel me all that much. it’s certainly an important moment for jack, but it explains away beckett’s motives the same vague way the movies do, aka by going “well, he’s just evil because he is/always was.”
what was really going on with beckett to force him through such a transformation had to have been much more than jack fucking up his job one time. the price of freedom tells us that he was a sickly kid not expected to live past childhood and that he was lowkey abused by his family, so i think a desire to prove his own worth was definitely part of it. but i don’t think beckett became evil (or doomed, for that matter) when he branded jack as a pirate. there’s a point in the book (if i’m remembering correctly) where young beckett gets captured by pirates and his dad refuses to pay the bail to have him released. it doesn’t explain how he eventually managed to escape, but i can only imagine that the experience left him with some internal damage… a fear of losing control, most likely, and of being out of his element. that’s kind of a lot for a teenager to take in… not only that his family doesn’t want him and he’s gonna have to fend for himself for the rest of his life, but that the world is cruel and unforgiving to vulnerable people, and the only way for him to survive is to seize all of the power and control he can and never let it go… because, if he doesn’t become the biggest fish, then a bigger fish is going to come along and that’ll be the end of him. beckett never manages to get rid of this fear of instability and vulnerability, which– especially after jack’s betrayal– manifests itself in a hatred of and desire to dominate (perhaps an attempt to conquer or mask a secret, intense fear of?) pirates and the occult. and of course, this eventually becomes his downfall, as he freezes the second he makes a mistake in at world’s end and is so unable to move beyond the loss of the upper hand that he literally just dies. beckett’s death is exactly what he deserves, but it’s also a remarkably devastating moment granted to a character who, up until this point, we’ve been guided to unreservedly hate and root against. in the grand scheme, it represents the fall of the old order, but for beckett himself, it’s his worst nightmare coming true– it’s the loss of control he’s been fighting this whole time and not realized was sneaking up on him till it was literally staring him in the face… and that’s tragic, and we’re meant to think so! we see his fatal flaw laid bare in a way that we would normally only expect the narrative to do so for its heroes, and it’s an incredible and shocking moment, being forced to briefly see things from the other side.
it’s hard for me to hate beckett as i watch him dying, and honestly it’s hard for me to hate him in general, because tbh i do resonate with him in some ways. obviously, his actions as a character are awful (and in particular, there’s no avoiding or diminishing the unequivocal evilness of the slave trading thing), and that’s what makes him a villain. but at the root of it all, i kinda just see a guy who’s sought to prove himself for so long that now he’s at the helm of this incredibly powerful and dangerous position that he cannot lose because he’s nothing without what he’s worked for, but even as he’s surrounded himself with people he can use as tools he has no one he can truly trust, so he projects this cold and calculating persona at all times because he has to, because it’s how he maintains control and he has to maintain control because without control he knows he’s already lost, but as tightly wound as he must be, he somehow manages not to break his composure even at the very end and goes down with his fucking ship in a moment that’s weirdly heroic… like. you don’t have to like beckett, but i do think he deserves respect. in a fandom full of wacky, fun, exciting characters, i know it’s not exactly intuitive to focus on the one decidedly un-supernatural, un-thrilling character… but in a story told by, about (and arguably for) pirates, beckett maybe rebels the most of all, by refusing, right down to his last moments, to succumb to a narrative that was never for him in the first place. and i think there’s something to be said about a character who-- villainous or not-- sticks by his principles till the end even as the very world around him bends to different rules, who doesn’t run from the law when it no longer benefits him but who acknowledges that he’s lost and owns it.

I saw you made art based off spirited away, and I love it! Have you seen Castle in the Sky (Laputa)? It's a movie by the same studio.
Cause the pirates in that movie are incredibly goofy and hilarious, they reminded me of the Yiga clan.
oh you have no idea, alot of miyazakis (ghibli) work has been and still is my biggest inspiration for both my art and way of story telling!!!
castle in the sky is one of my absolut faves and i rewatch it more than id like to admit, i wish i was as cool as dora ;O;
and yes ! doras pirate gang have clear yiga clan vibes xD

All Of My Projects
Tumblr media
A rundown of everything I’m working on/plan to work on in no particular order but just so I can keep track and I have some base idea of how far along I am with each wip.
The Saints’ Song
A series of four books detailing the political intrigue of the Escana Empire and her allies as well as the forever scandalous Prince Argus and his relationship with Leo, a pirate.
Currently working on the second draft of Of Blood and Stone, the third book in the series after having rewritten the first two. I have some planned minor edits I still want to make to ORG for the purposes of self publishing and to just make myself overall happier with the finished product. I have OBS mostly outlined I’m still just making plans for how I want this book to go given the plot changes I’ve made in the first two and the added characters who will make appearances as well as now debating to add in a fifth POV sooner. Obviously this is the work I’ve worked on the longest and is has the benefit of having the most world building as anyone who browses my page for more than a minute can tell you.
The Night Court
A standalone that takes place in the same world as The Saints’ Song only some 50ish years later (an early 19th century setting instead of a late 18th century setting) and in a different country. The story of a courtesan named Mikolaj with a secret past and his romance with two other sex workers. Marian does not get an honorable mention.
Cautiously calling this the second draft or I’m almost done with draft one and a half as I did restart and change earlier chapters several times before getting to this point. I’m on chapter thirty-five out of a planned thirty-seven. I’ve already taken some minor notes for things to look at for a rewrite but I do plan to take a break from this piece before I dive back into editing and rewriting. I have my insecurities about how the plot flows and the copious amount of sex scenes but we’ll see how I feel about it in a few months. I AM really happy with my culture building for Gegra (the setting) though. It’s clearly distinct enough from Escan even without the time period changes. In my humble opinion, of course.
The Saints Are Drowning
I believe I wanted this to be a novella. A renaissance inspired era “prequel” or TSS that takes place in the often mentioned holy capital of the world, the city of Mignola and follows the election of a new Justice as the city is thrown into chaos.
I have it outlined, all characters named and vaguely fleshed out with their wants and needs, and since it takes place in the same world as the previously mentioned works most of the world building is clearly done (except for any changes that need to be made to fit a new time period). I haven’t started writing it.
Someone Will Die
Taking place in a reimagining 1930s America on a college campus where one can enroll to briefly avoid the possibility of being torn apart by monsters. A popular student is murdered and a professor with something to hide is chosen as the most likely suspect.
This one has been dropped a lot due to the fact that I decided to write it out of chronological order and in alternating POVs of a small group of the related characters. I’ve been working on another outline and the timeline of all the events as they happen instead of the mixed up order that the story is told. I have some minor debates with myself to just get rid of the fact that it takes place in “America” (very loosely) and just make up a setting completely. All the locations are already fictional and the history completely different but this might be something I save for another draft just because I don’t think it would be helpful for me to start tearing into the other chapters with a mind to start changing things. I really want to finish a draft.
We Heard the Devil
Cults and boarding schools. 28 year old Chris “Gopher” Vernon reflects back on his last year of high school back in 2007-2008 where he was a victim but also on his relationship with the strange student who lived across the hall.
It’s not fantasy. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone but a piece I can see myself being really proud of when I finish as it’s the most personal due to the setting being my home state of Connecticut and deals with a lot of my own frustrations just with a “horror” twist. I have it fully outlined and I’m easing into the first draft. I don’t mind that this one will take a long time to write just because writing close first person POV is also difficult for me among the other differences from other works.
These Trees Do Talk
Softly planned “sequel” to the above. Not with any related characters but I like the idea of having a series of black, New England horror stories that are loosely connected by the thread of my own traumas from my upbringing. And I like the title but it’s otherwise not planned.
The Sorcerei of Cokumpoint
A mid-Victorian setting with illegal magic gangs and family feuds. Ethel starts the book on the search for her presumed dead twin brother and instead finds a witch and a villain whose been terrorizing the city.
While this is actually a fantasy rewrite an a complete redo of a story I wrote in my teen years (as well as the standalone version of a trilogy) I’m considering this a first draft. I don’t have it outlined and I should start cracking into some notes. I’ve had it on pause for a few months for this exact reason which is a shame I really love the setting and I haven’t gotten to the gangs yet. I also do not mind how goofy the title is.
Before picking this up I would like to flesh out an outline first and really organize my thoughts for how I want this story to go.
Harem Wip
Obviously unnamed. The story of an eunuch helping a concubine climb the ranks of a harem in order to get close to an emperor he wants to seduce and murder for his own political gains. I have it more or less outlined but I am held back because I haven’t picked a name for the main character and I’m still in the early stages of building the world it will take place in. I have vague ideas rolling around a map currently and I’d like to flesh out the setting more before going forward as that will likely inform the plot choices I make.
Cruise liner Wip
There’s nothing here than my love of Edwardian cruise liners and I want to go back to writing about gay things happening on boats. This is in the earliest stages of me tacking ideas onto a board and hoping they stick.

ok you pick either my darling penelope or hotch
WHAT ABOUT BOTH!!!! note: i’m only on season 6 of criminal minds. yes, i know. i know all the spoilers, but bear with me, here penelope garcia: favorite thing about them: i love her so much this is so hard to DO. i love her heart so much. i love that she never lets the bad shit take away who she is. i love that she’s so authentically herself with everyone and cares so much about everyone. least favorite thing about them: can i say nothing. honestly the worst thing the show did was try and make me believe penelope garcia wasn’t a “hot girl”. like she’s allowed to have insecurities of course she is but Have You Seen Her favorite line: this is so hard i’m skipping this one on both of them brOTP: penelope and hotch! i love their banter and how he’s so fond of her despite not telling her. when he bought her the flowers ‘from gideon’ in season 1 my heart burst OTP: MORGAN AND GARCIA SUPREMACY nOTP: her and kevin lynch. listen he’s fine i just know the show made her date him because they were both ‘quirky’. again, see the “penelope garcia totally isn’t hot” point. random headcanon: bisexual penelope garcia rights unpopular opinion: ??? honestly not sure i am not doing the last two because they’re TOO HARD aaron hotchner: favorite thing about them: can i say everything. i love his strength and his heart and his determination and his goofiness (because aaron hotchner is a goof when he’s not SSA Hotchner, we’ll get more on that later) and i love him so much okay least favorite thing about them: why does this remind me of that scene in revelations. honestly i’m gonna go with emily’s answer and say he doesn’t trust women as much as men because it’s a good answer and the fact that he didn’t refute it makes me go hmmm favorite line: the whole court scene with “charcoal grey” makes my heart soar brOTP: hotch and prentiss, hotch and garcia OTP: come on now. y’all gonna make me say it..... hotch and reid always you know it nOTP: hotch and rossi. not because they’re not good friends! i love them as friends! but i don’t like them romantically together, sorry random headcanon: okay, going back to aaron’s goofiness. i think he’s a huge fucking dork because of all of these reasons: the whole ‘i wanna keep the pirate hat’ debacle at the end of season 1. in ‘the big game’ when the whole gang is out for new years, he tells haley they’re going to “show them how it’s done”. the little fist bump in season 10. the moments he has with jack. AARON HOTCHNER IS A GOOF. he’s a dork. he’s a dweeb. when his guard is down, he’s not smooth at all. aaron hotchner got good at compartmentalizing and putting on an invulnerable front because of his childhood/relationship with his father (which i know is a headcanon in and of itself, since the show never outwardly confirmed it), but the real vulnerable aaron hotchner? absolute dork. i will die on this hill! i know he’s not like this 99% of the time but he has such a soft heart underneath it all. unpopular opinion: i don’t know man this is hard.................... unpopular opinion: aaron hotchner’s ties are kinda shitty sometimes i’m not gonna lie

Updated Backyardigans fanfic rec list
You said “send me the link privately” and I went, “actually I’m an overachiever for now I’ve decided” so here’s an updated version of the list of fic recs that other anon dropped a while ago. Now with more fics and little descriptions for all of them. Lemme know what you think of these! Might update you later if I find any other good fics. Happy Reading! (Note: I’d put all this under read more but I don’t know how to do that when submitting from mobile. If you want this to not take up as much space on your blog, you can like, copy/paste all this under a read more or something. I dunno) Hopefully these links work Backyardigans MiniAdventures and Randomness by WildImaginationGirl21 A collection of oneshots. Creative scenarios, and you can tell WildImaginationGirl21 was really passionate about Backyardigans at the time. A few oneshots are Austin/Uniqua A Nightmare’s Dream by casslass A fluffy little hurt/comfort fic I guess. Pretty well written. Uniqua has a nightmare. Her friends are there for her. There’s some Austin/Uniqua at the end. Very cute. Robot Rescue by Ruki Ki A sequel fic to robot rampage written in script format. They’re trying to fix all the robots. Backyardigans To The Future by cardsharks87 Goofy but in a good way. Uniqua turns an old car into a time machine and she and Pablo accidentally travel to 2050, where everything’s screwed-up and weird. Script-like format again. The Backyardigans: The Mouse Problem by Katy-Kale The Backyardigans are all staying in a hotel together for some reason and there’s a mouse. Some Easter Eggs/ references to episodes of the show, and also other things, including repurposed songs. The ending’s pretty cute. It’s All About the Paint by Sir Mustapha Tyrone and Austin are running competing paint companies and are also at war? Uniqua is a reporter that gets roped into the whole thing. Actually really well written! For a Backyardigans fic, anyway. The Masked Retriever II by Katy-Kale A 7 chapter sequel to The Masked Retriever. Pablo reads about knights and then tries to be one. Also he ditches Don Austin. Contains Pablo/Uniqua. Also contains some pretty funny scenes. Katy-Kale once again outsources songs Morning Commute by ZombieCatTookMyPudding A short crossover with the Wonder Pets about cartoon logic. Not much else to say. Smugglers Cove by backyardgameboy Quite a few typos, but still pretty good. Austin’s parents take the gang on a vacation to a touristy town called Smugglers Cove, where, rumor has it, pirates used to bury their treasure. Obviously, the Backyardigans are going after that treasure. Pablo is portrayed as really dumb here for some reason?? Austin has a dream where he turns into Sonic the hedgehog?? Austin/Uniqua. Minor Tyrone/Tasha. Lots of references to various episodes. What Is Love by casslass Short, sweet, and shippy! Takes place within the world of Robot Rampage. Robot Roscoe/Robot Reba, Austin/Uniqua. Return Of The Bug Goddess by Musk-ox-Leia Structured like an episode of the show. Tasha erases Uniqua’s memory in order to win a competition of Gods. Uses songs from the show-sorta, the lyrics are completely different Solider Boys by Bat138 Script format. One of the first Backyardigans fanfics on Fanfiction.net. Features original “songs” (though I guess it’s just text so... poems? IDK) Tyrone and Pablo have to save Princess Tasha, who was kidnapped by Austin and Uniqua Backyardigans of Madagascar by cardsharks87 A crossover with the penguins of Madagascar. Sherman got left behind when the wormans were going to Wyoming and ended up in New York via wacky hijinx now the Penguins of Madagascar and the Backyardigans need to take him to Wyoming. A Light in the Sky-The Backyardigans by Cyberstorm4 A suspenseful, supernatural Backyardigans story that takes place during summer break. Ongoing, and undergoing rewrites. Last updated March 11 of this year. The writing is okay, but the dialogue in the first few chapters feels OOC. It’s tagged creepypasta, but I genuinely have no idea why. Lastly, there’s a surprising amount of Backyardigans fanfics on deviantart. Most of them are pretty OC-heavy, I’ve noticed. Luckily, a deviantart group has already compiled a lot of them

As a fan of manga (mostly everything Tezuka), I'm intrigued by your comments about One Piece, but my assumption is it HAS to be at least PRETTY GOOD to be as popular as it is and to have run as long as it has. I'd be interested in more detailed posts about it, as well as how you recommend reading it, if you do. On a somewhat related note, today I started reading all of Batman. Planning to go from 1939 to 1999, when I first picked up the comics.
Whoops I wrote a lot; sorry:
I’m 615 chapters in out of 1000 (and in the middle of the Fish-Man Island saga which I think fans rank as either the worst or second-worst arc)(the other worst one, this bad tournament arc, I’ve already gotten past)... so I guess I have a lot to say, but you know, nothing especially original, just...
There’s a stretch (namely, the Water 7 arc all the way through Marineford) that is a hall of fame stretch. He drops like 5-6 arcs that just land perfect right in row (though it’s hard to imagine it ever reaching the heights of the second arc in that series, Ennies Lobby ever again). But that being said, it’s a little funny to tell anyone “Oh it takes 150 chapters to get really good” (that’s at least 2000+ pages of comics) let alone, that the A+ stuff starts 300 chapters in. A chapter of One Piece only takes a minutes or so to read, if that, but it’s still a big ask. People used to get angry if you told them that Deadwood only gets good after 3-4 hours, so...
But that stretch is ... not “life-affirming” but... it touches a very old part of my brain in a very satisfying way.
I had a whole long post I deleted because I thought it was boring, but... when I was into classical American superhero comics, the thing I’d constantly be nerdiest about is that there was this Great Possibility, to do something truly epic in that space which I didn’t think had been done. There’s been a few novels (Watchmen, the Enigma) but not that many. And American superhero comics don’t really have a Lord of the Rings or a Star Wars or, an example for me as a kid even though I hadn’t read all the books was the Gunslinger books (or sure, The Stand if The Stand had maybe a different ending? I don’t know-- I’m not watching the TV show but I don’t really remember that ending fondly). The epic driven by a creator who is creating his own personal mythology, basically. Most of the genre is tied to pre-existing universes which foreclose that as a possibility and people who work outside those universes tend to just make shit like that Peter Cannon thing or Supreme or whatever that comments back on those universes...
Maybe you could argue the Hickman X-Men thing but for me, everyone after Claremont on X-Men is just inheriting so much from Claremont that... It means very little to me. It’s not a personal mythology. Same with Crisis. The closest to me comics came was Kirby with the 4th World, but... Carmine Infantino shut that down. And the Claremont run itself is ... an interesting discussion, but again, Bob Harras. But back before Watchmen 2, back when I thought comics could be this thing that improve over time (haha), I’d look for that (or for any ambition! any!) and just gave up as time went on. The careerist generation came in; the ambitions shrank even further; etc., to where I’m at now where my attitude generally with comics is “that’s nice; who care; so, is your wife dating anyone right now, what’s her story?”
But then One Piece ... One Piece, of all things, becomes this epic thing! And it’s great! I was right that it would be great!!! I was right! (My favorite thing to be!).
Not at first-- at first the formula is “Wacky Pirates go to an Island, they find out something sad is going on in the Island, a character acting extremely emotional causes the biggest fight possible which goes on for 50 chapters, and then they leave the island and maybe take someone with them.” And that’s a lot of big arcs... until little by little, tiny bit by tiny bit, Oda’s built up this world. And then that world starts to become the story. And that’s still kind of the formula but... but then they’re stakes.
The archetypal shonen cliche story is “a boy wants to be the best in the world at something”, right, but what One Piece does (and I haven’t read as much as other people so I don’t know how common this is, I haven’t read Naruto or Bleach, neither of which I’m too excited to check out, though i think david brothers vouches for Bleach heavy so I’ll probably give that one a shot), what One Piece does is sees how that would necessarily become a political struggle eventually. Because what does it mean to be the best in the world at something when there’s an entire world out there already in operation, and built around you not being the best in the world, built around someone else being that...
And then there’s just this amount of worldbuilding that goes on, that is so slowly fed out over those first 300 episodes that you don’t even notice it... Until suddenly around Water 7, these bigger forces have now noticed our wacky pirates, and are shifting around them and getting upset about them. Culminating in this arc called Marineford that ... again not as good as Ennies Lobby but... I don’t think there’s a comparable arc in American comics to Marineford. The scale of that one... The fact he managed to draw that on a weekly basis!
While still being a goofy kid’s pirate comic. It’s funny. The power sets are all really silly, but in a way that reminds of how kids play more than a Dragonball thing. (He takes like 400-500 chapters to even get to a Dragonball-style levelling up concept, which I thought was pretty patient of him). But within that, I’m enjoying it now in a very Claremont way of... there now not just being these scrappy outcast heroes I’m rooting for, but an entire universe of people around them, with their own agendas, that I have varying levels of investment in.
There’s this saying that the Golden Age of science fiction is 12 years old, the idea being that’s the age where stuff lands with you the hardest because it’s all NEW for you. But the thing is if you’re really immature (lifts hand)... I think part of things is you run out of the Good Stuff. I go back and look at old Chris Claremont X-Mens and if I somehow find one I’ve never read before (and this was the lesson of Dazzler in Hollywood for me), I’m still right there, it still lands with me, there just aren’t that many people who can actually land that plane. Once Scorcese is gone, what gangster movies are people going to be watching? Blow? Savages? Kubrick only made the movies he made. People add a little every year, but the really good stuff is rare.
And so when I’m looking at One Piece and I’m enjoying it the way I’d enjoy a Claremont X-men comic (even if aesthetically it’s a VERY different thing-- sexless and not as weirdo-operatic and less violent and more childish and definitely younger-skewing)... but that I’m getting that same thrill of “oh this comic is a portal to this entire fictional universe this guy made up and that kind of exists now thanks to this (kinda disturbing I guess it turns out) guy” to me is... Not “life affirming” that’s not the right word but... It feels good on my brain to know. Because then being sour and grouchy isn’t just me getting older and the inevitability of age-- then it’s just... People need to make better shit!!! Or I need to do a better job not wasting my time on, you know, an industry that’s not built to deliver what I need as a reader...
I mean, I’ve been saying for more than 10 years, I should just quit American comics and just be one of those guys to switch to manga. And I’m not 100% there because... I mean, because of Copra and because of like an extremely small list of things that aren’t Copra. (I just signed for Kate Beaton’s Patreon). But... I’m 95% there, and it’s been great, and I just feel dumb for not having done it earlier.
One Piece has big problems, too. (There’s a whole “Sanji meets drag queens” thing that’s very much not landing with me right now). I don’t think you can ever top Ennies Lobby because Ennies Lobby is about convincing a suicidal person whose been betrayed their whole life that life’s worth fighting for-- there’s never going to be an emotional engine to the story that’s as good as that one. It’s trying to work its way back to a “normal One Piece story” in this Fish arc and it’s... I want to see it level up again! The core cast is just a little too big (it really didn’t need Bones). I think the shonen model generally creates a sort of “power arms race” where it’s like constantly “oh you learned how to crush mountains with your dick in the last arc? Well, too bad our mountains are made of diamonds now” escalations that ... feel a little like a treadmill as opposed to a story. I feel like it needs to kick into a Second Act, after the big ending of that first Act at Marineford. And just... I don’t know how it can keep topping some of these fights, and think it’d get to be diminishing returns to find out. But...
A “team of buddies versus the world” is already a great thing for a story to be about, and it’s just really satisfying having One Piece having the “the world” part of that equation being so complicated and varied and colorful. It’s like if the Ocean’s 11 gang had to rob an overwhelming-more-powerful global crime syndicate, with multiple competing factions, while still convincing Julia Roberts to love them-- they just robbed Andy Garcia and I watch that movie like once a year.
(And thematically, the comic-- it’s not deep, but it’s basically got an anti-authoritarian streak to it, which I think is important for a kid comic to have. It’s a pirate comic and you can’t really do a pirate comic without being like “fuck the cops” at least a little bit. The pirate thing is interesting because it basically means that there’s always a discussion going on about what it means to be free, though I think sometimes the comic doesn’t really reckon with that-- it sometimes falls back into “well if there was a good monarch though” thinking... but there being good pirates and bad pirates and good government characters and bad ones, I like that... and the very worst characters just being rich assholes... yeah, good lessons in One Piece for the kids!!).
That and I just like how that dude draws. He’s not doing some dreary realism thing-- the layouts are fun without being showy or confusing-- he really improves as the series goes on (though some of the recent stuff I’ve seen hasn’t looked as good, but I’m not sure if I’m seeing low-quality scans or he’s been thrown a loop cause of COVID or what). I’ll always put up with a boring stretch in a comic if someone, like, crosshatches an arm in a way that I find interesting, so that probably distorts how I read One Piece too...
I could go on and on, basically because ... goddamn, what else do I have to talk about, ughhh. But yeah: that’s why I think it’s popular-- it’s the worldbuilding. It’s 100% the worldbuilding. (By which I’d include that it has this massive cast, that i can keep kinda clear in my head, not all of whom want the same things, etc.)(though also geographically-- there are maps and everything)... But recommend it? I don’t know-- I mean... It’s a little kid’s pirate comic. There’s a THOUSAND of them. It’s more modern than a Tezuka thing-- it’s jumping off more from Toriyama than Tezuka, and that’s a different vibe. It’s like not something you can just “recommend”-- it’s a major time sink. I’d recommend Chainsaw Man first to someone with my age and background because even though it has its own flaws, it’s more “age appropriate” and there are only 90 chapters, and it’s got that rad stretch about 20 chapters in so you see the “good part” faster...
