So in the AU the Snorks are actually sort of a type of fairy. They have wings and also possess magic like the Moomins who are witches, but it’s more “static”?? It’s hard to describe… For Moomins, the ones that are witches are born with some magic ability if they come from a family heritage that has witches, but anyone can train to become a witch and any witch can choose what path of magic they want to take which can diverge several different ways. But for Snorks, all Snorks are fairies and rather than them having direct influence on their magic it’s instead something that grows and changes with them naturally. I’d say in the AU witch magic is more of a focused energy while fairy magic is magic that has to *be* focused, if that makes any sense lol.

Snorks’ wings don’t serve a lot of purposes at the moment except for being a by-product of their evolution. (I’ll probably have a purpose eventually I just haven’t thought of one yet lol). The way Snork wings move is actually more inspired by fish (tail) fins rather than bug wings, so I imagine Snorks in this AU are more closely related to Sea-trolls than Moomins are (Sea-trolls in this AU possess a pair of fins on their back that are somewhat similar to the Snorks’ wings). Both Snorks and Sea-trolls also have more southern origins, and the standard Snork is actually less fluffy than the standard Moomin, as an adaptation to the warmer climate. Snork, Snorkmaiden, their parents, etc, are actually the start of a subspecies of “northern” Snork, since they moved up to the mountains north of Moominvalley some time ago.

The Snorks tend to live in kingdoms, however the rulers are always a pair of siblings rather than a married couple, unless if there is any valid reason two siblings can’t lead (ex: one of them is dead or missing, one is too old to lead, one is too young to lead, stuff like that). This shared leadership between siblings is to represent the familial bond between two ancient siblings who were part of the 6 “Pillars of Magic” (which I will go into detail further once I have the mental energy to explain all the ancient folklore i’ve created for this AU lmao 😭).

Snork and Snorkmaiden are prince and princess of their little northern Snork kingdom, however they don’t serve much role in their kingdom because they currently reside in the quiet Moominvalley… sources (me) say that the reason they were left there with Moominmamma is that their mother is quite anxious about them getting hurt ☝️ I wonder why… totally not lore related lol. Kinda interesting that Snorkmamma doesn’t have a sibling to lead with though… haha…

What's your favorite characterization of sniff in media (movies or series specifically)

And if you find one. There's any characterization of sniff I'm fanfics that you like (sorry for grammar, English isn't my first language)

Uhhh... hmm... Besides the source material I think the 90s series did better than most.

Mūmin 1969 and its sequel series Shin Mūmin veers too much from the source material in nearly everything and doesn't really carry over much of Sniff's characterization as a part of that. 2019 Sniff goes through such great injustices to his character that I've done nothing but pull my hair out when it comes to him. Fuzzy Felt seems... Okay I guess but I haven't watched much of the series besides Great Comet Chase and Winter Wonderland (hopefully I'll be able to get to that soon), and anything else like Moomins on the Riviera or Mumintrollet 1969 either feature him as a cameo or don't feature him at all.

So that just leaves the 90s series, which does indeed adapt alot of what made Sniff, Sniff and doesn't lower his character below everyone else because the writers clearly doesn't care for him (cough cough 2019 cough what?). But besides loyalty to the source material (to an extent, looking at all the extra cowardice the Comet in Moominland movie decided to inject), there's alot to like about him; I really like his expressiveness compared to the other characters, I appreciate his little moments where he shines like that bridge scene where he tries to wrangle the alien device from Stinky, his dynamic with everyone feels well-balanced although I wish they did just a few more things with those dynamics, and overall he really does make for a fun character to watch if you don't mind his more annoying eccentricities like his voice (which I got used to easily).

What I don't really like about him is the extra emphasis on him being a scaredy-cat for no particular reason besides comic relief or writing him out, like how they made Sniff scared of the ocean so he wouldn't go with the Moomins on the Hattifatteners island or the Lighthouse, or the way he was super scared about looking at the Comet through the telescope. And I think the most unlikeable he could be in the show is during the Moominsummer Madness adaptation where he's downright selfish and bratty which I really don't like, especially when you consider he's replacing 3 whole characters including Mymble Jr (who is super underwritten in the show) in that story.

As for fanfic... Please, to those reading this answer, tell me any recommendations for fanfics featuring Sniff. I haven't read alot of fanfic but they usually tend to not use him very much (if he isn't straight up not in the story) or if they do use him he's either written too simplistically (without emotional depth to his character) or maliciously (being straight up the villain of the story) which I don't love.

Donghyuck winces as you press the cotton absorbed with ointment to a cut on his cheekbone, hissing and turning his head the other way.

"Hyuck come on, you've dealt with worse." You sigh exasperated, your hand reaching up to place it on his shoulder, rubbing comfortingly. It feels a bit weird though, instead of warm, smooth skin you feel cold and hard leather grazing your fingers, but you've grown used to it anyway.

Donghyuck grunts, but obliges to your instructions of not moving, locking eyes with yours for a moment before you focus on his bruised and cut cheeks. You never get why he gets into meaningless fights.

He never really tells you either, so all you have to conclude is for entertainment, or maybe small petty things. But you know Donghyuck knows better than that.

You gently place a bandaid on his cut, smoothing out the moomin themed plaster on his skin. Renjun had gifted you a moomin themed first aid box for Christmas, claiming he heard of your struggles of cleaning Hyuck up every time he showed up in front of you hurt.

"Why did you even fight them anyway?" You ask after patting lightly on the plaster, moving to take care of the other cut on his chin. Donghyuck peers down at you with uncertainty, hesitating to tell you the truth.

Truth be told, it was always the other person's fault the fight starts, either they want to take on the famous bad boy of campus or maybe they were the ones who wanted entertainment. It was never him.

It was never him, but this time.

Your boyfriend huffs out, avoiding your gaze as your eyes land on his, trying to read the emotions hidden behind those mysterious brown eyes you find yourself falling in love with every time you take a glance into them. "I-It's nothing."

"Donghyuck," you whisper desperately, placing the first aid kit on your lap aside. Your hands envelope his, fingers delicately dancing over his blue and purple mess of his hands, pulling them into a lock.

You softly tug, a silent plead to look at you.

He finally glances at you, growing guilty at the look on your face, eyebrows scrunched up together in worry, eyes glistening with barely any patience as you wait for his answer.

"They just…" Donghyuck looks away from you, instead staring at the lock of your hands, how your clean and soft looking hands hold onto his beat up and slightly bloody hands, wondering how he got such an angel to care for him. "they said stuff."

"Donghyuck, that barely helps with anything. Please just tell me already! I've been waiting for weeks, and I really don't want to pry on you, but seeing you like this-"

"They were talking about you, alright?!"

The rest of your sentence instantly dies down from your throat, growing speechless at your boyfriend's annoyed tone. His gaze on you is just as hard as his voice, revealing everything beneath them, no longer hiding from you anymore.

They soften the moment they notice your own hurt eyes, absorbing the shock from them and filtering it into guilt. "They were talking about how stupid you were for choosing me."

"Hyu-" your attempt to talk is quickly shut down as Donghyuck's eyes grow desperate, his hands tightening their hold on your own palms.

"I fought them because they called you dumb and crazy. I fought them because it hurts to see someone say such filthy things about you so carelessly. Then even say I don't deserve you, which hurts the most…"

Beads of tears burn at the corner of your eyes as Donghyuck's own also welled up in tears, his nose quickly growing red as he holds in a choked sob. "if everyone thinks I don't deserve you, why should I?"

"Fuck that, Donghyuck," one of your hands release from the pile of tangled limbs on your laps, cupping his face to bring his tearful face back up to look at you. "I don't give a shit about what they think. I only care about what you think about me."

Your thumb carefully rubs gentle circles on his skin, making sure to avoid the bruises scattered on his cheek. His eyes gloss over and over as more of his tears trickle down his cheeks. You catch a few between your thumb, caressing them away with pure endearment.

"You're the only one that counts, okay?"

Donghyuck sniffles quietly, leaning slightly into your comforting touch. He's never felt such a soft and gentle sensation, he wants more of it, to drown in it and bask in the love he never got growing up.

"They could think anything about me, think I'm dumb, crazy, stupid, anything, Hyuck. As long as you don't think so I'm okay."

Donghyuck realizes that he feels the same way. He's labeled as Haechan, the schools flunker and trouble maker, but to you he's Lee Donghyuck, the hard working and playful human who only wants to bring a smile to his friends' faces.

They can think whatever the hell they want, if you have each other they mean nothing.

Please what’s the moomin reference I’m dying to know

*breaths deeply in two year long hyperfixation* wELL

I've tried to write this post a Few times without going into a full essay about what moomin is, as that's Not necessary for answering the question. however, I am unfortunately me and this is the Writes Essays Blog. so I've simply decided I will be a nuisance instead.

but the plus side is that I've been thinking about writing about some of my other fandoms here for a while ! so, for a crash course on the franchise:

“moomin,” “the moomins,” or “moominvalley” is a franchise originally stemming from first novels and then comics written in the 1940s-50s by the finnish author tove jansson, which has since ballooned with Many adaptations and other such goodies (like themeparks and games). 

it’s most popular adaptation is hands down the 90s anime adaptation ! which took tove’s charming designs and calming atmosphere and kicked it up to 11 with a long-form slice of life series

but all versions have their own particular flair and tone, even two versions created by tove herself are Very different. with the comics having a focus in on the absurd and comedic and the novels, while certainly Having those elements, also focus in on more serious themes and melancholy!

(here's a brief rundown for the differences in the adaptations for anyone interested ! [Link])

of course, moomin was a relatively unknown entity in the us because it never officially released here, but there was a brief boom here on tumblr in 2019 thanks to the release of a new adaption (called moominvalley)!

it was a perfect storm for a couple reasons:

1: while it can be a bit difficult to track down the series in the us, the Characters are all extremely accessible. with their designs alone you can pick up on who and what the main cast are both Quickly and Scarily Accurately, with the fandom largely rising Before most people had found access to the content itself flkjfdaskjkjl

they're Incredibly Simple characters that still lend themselves well to complexity. they aren't blank slates in the slightest, but they're easy to Bend and reimagine and flesh out. which is really appealing to fandom spaces!

2: having multiple different fleshed out iterations to choose from meant that if you looked you could most likely find something that suited your taste! (it'd be an incredibly accessible franchise if they'd actually make their content Accessible world wide)

3: this is Especially relevant in how the franchise can act as both escapism and catharsis. the 90s anime especially is a comfortable cottage-core fantasy to sink yourself into and forget the woes of real world (something that was about to become Very relevant in 2019), but the novels were specifically written for an audience that was actively living through war.

and while tove never wanted to make the franchise Dark or Gritty, she wanted to create a series that could help children process and come to terms with some of the feelings they Would realistically be experiencing. one of the very first novels is "Comet in Moominland," where a great comet is coming down to crash into the earth. it still engages with comedy and with the absurd, and of course nobody Dies, but it was very intentionally trying to create an accessible outlet to understand Tragedy and Fear. among lots of other things ! and this is, of course, tempered with the warm comforts of friends and family and community.

I think there's a lot to be gained by sifting through this franchise Now honestly. something that can both Distract from the bleakness and help process it, with a certain gentleness either way.

4: tove jansson was an Incredibly queer woman, and this absolutely bleeds into her work and the adaptations that followed!

while inspiration isn't an Exact one-to-one, tove Has spoken about her inspirations for her characters before. moomin (the character) draws a great deal from herself while snufkin, moomin's "best friend" and a funny little beastie, draws from her lovers both in personality and in relationship to moomin!

a big inspiration for snufkin was a man who had nearly been her husband, a vagabond and a socialist for that matter. the official moomin site (which is cannot stress enough, is representative of the franchise itself and heavily curated) describes That as follows [Link]:

In many ways the relationship of Moomintroll (Tove’s alter-ego) and Snufkin describes the relationship between Tove and Atos. Moomintroll admires Snufkin who still is quite distant and very often Moomintroll is also experiencing a deep sense of longing and yearning when Snufkin is leaving to his adventures or choosing to be at peace with his own thoughts. Moomintroll tries to understand Snufkin’s desire for freedom, even though the waiting is not easy.

Just like Tove admired Atos and just like Tove waited for Atos, his love confessions and commitment. [End transcription]

but it was Also based, in part, on the woman who was her wife in all but legality. [Link 1, Link 2] Having met some time 1956 and having stayed life long partners until tove's death in 2001.

they'd built a home together on an island where they'd go to stay every summer, enjoying their own travels and adventures along the way !

come winter, moomin would pine for snufkin as he made his yearly travel down south, but the spring and summer months would always bring snufkin's return! and all the love and warmth that came with him uwu

How exactly that bleeds through in the franchise itself is well. Extensive. picking literally any iteration and trying to lay out, in full, the queer themes present would be an essay longer than this one. so instead have a small selection to illustration the point:

now, naturally, this was (and is) queercoding rather than explicit representation, but this was a queer woman pushing the boundaries of what was allowed to Be in children's media starting in the 1940s and onwards.

there's something About a woman who lived a full and happy life with the woman she loved, pouring that love into her life's work to create a foundation of care and acceptance for the generation that'd come after her, only to see a resurgence of queer teens See her and say what she wasn't allowed to out loud.

which brings us to !

5: the general blanket of pure acceptance radiating from the series.

that's not necessarily anything New for a children's franchise, but in combination with everything else it creates an environment for an absolute comfort series. this fragment of an article about the series has far and away wormed it's way into my mind in some irreversible way (and that's quite a good thing) [Link]:

In most fiction, family is what you escape from if you want to fulfill yourself. For Jansson, family is a place of tolerance, where we can fail and become ourselves. Her experience of growing up gay is there in Snufkin – who is all the more loved for being different. Like the prodigal son, everyone is so thrilled to see him, no one ever asks him where he has been. It’s there too, in Too-Ticky, Jansson’s portrait of her partner. And above all it’s there in the wonderful story where Moomintroll is transformed into the bug-eyed King of California, and his mother recognises him straight away. [End transcription]

the quickest and most accurate description for this series, this franchise as a whole, that I could give is Warmth.

that's not to say that it's All roses. tove herself was an icon, but moomin company is a Company in charge of a franchise in the same ball park as disney properties. but considering there's no way to legally support moomin in the states I'd say the morality of engaging with it on that basis isn't exactly the most pressing of issues.

now with all of That out of my system: the actual information relevant to the comparison.

one of the stories in moomin (the novels, the 90s anime, and the 2019 adaptation, though I'm most familiar with the latter) is "The Invisible Child." [Link]

it's the story of ninny, an invisible child that moomin and co find and bring into their home to try to figure out Why she's invisible and how to fix it.

as we come to find out, ninny went invisible and lost her voice (even the ink on paper she tried to write on going invisible) because she'd been made to Feel invisible through the neglect of her aunt.

the moomins help ninny find her confidence again, with small aspects coming back to her as they make progress and regressing as they make missteps. but the ultimate point is that she needs to feel Seen and Heard.

that feeling of not having a voice, of not having a Presence, taking on the form of a Physical curse of invisibility.

it's a concept that meshes Extremely well with tommy's situation, even Without the headcanon.

sadly not since i have a full-time job, but I really appreciate the interest!! currently reading: So right now... The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery, book 3 of TGCF, a book written by one of my friends, and Outlawed by Anna North. (I was also reading The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune when I received this notif and have since finished it... highly highly recommend!)

ok ok ok i'm beating a dead horse but you know how i dislike little my in mv season 3. i realized something that could have totally changed how i felt. the thing that's missing.

it's mymble jr. if she were included in moominvalley there'd be no need to force a conflict between little my and moominpappa. it wasn't believable for the character. the message that there's more to love than biology is good, and also the importance of actually telling people you love them (although Moominpappa's insensitivity was a little over the top even for him... yes i know it's for kids but back when i was a kid i noticed that sort of stuff in cartoons too and never liked it). but those messages wound up overdone, it's too obvious that they were forced in to be educational, rather than rising from the narrative organically.

but if mymble jr were there, that's someone who little my does love and who does create conflict. they're sisters. they fight, they disagree. mymble jr is at her wit's end with little my's wildness every other day. little my is entertained yet exasperated with mymble jr's flirting and crushes.

and there's great content about them! in Moominsummer Madness, Little My tells us how Mymble Jr's strategy with children is yell at them and then give them candy in apology :P it's not much, sure, but added to other scenes with mymble and little my, the comics, the storybooks, their relationship already looks developed and uniquely theirs. then there's the scene at the play, when Little My doesn't realize the lion is fake, and jumps onto the stage to rescue her sister. that is one of my favorite little my moments ever. anyone who ever questioned how little my really feels about mymble jr, there's your answer.

what i'm saying is little my doesn't need daddy issues. she has sister issues. mymble jr opens little my up. and just because the moominvalley show didn't have her doesn't mean she can just be replaced with moominpappa. the dynamic is completely different. it's not fair to change little my so that she's uncertain and in need of validation, when independence and self-assurance are hallmarks of her character. there's still plenty you can do to give her more depth without that. let her have a relationship with her older sister that stands in contrast to her relationship with her gaggle of younger ones. a sister who is prettier and more girly than her, but who is also stubborn and witty and wild in her own way, and a wonderful foil to little my.

they bothered to animate mymble mamma and her gremlin offspring, was it really too expensive to have mymble jr too? personally I'd rather have her than snork. all love for snork, but we have more canon material for mymble jr than we do for snork, and i think the creators really need that canon material to fall back on. it's the difference between making a moomin children's show and making any old children's show.

i am struggling to figure out whether fictional means like something like not our world in books or something not our world in general lmao my bad so i’m gonna answer both!! in a book i would wanna be in the howls moving castle world or honestly any of the worlds by diana wynne-jones i lovvveee her and honestly a lot of them are interconnected aren’t they… but yes that! and then for not our world i think i would want flying mermaids, like we all live in the sky in like clouds and swim through the sky like it’s water but then we also get to still be able to go and get buffeted about by the waves (my fave thing about the ocean)

um question 2!! maybe this would me being a flying mermaid actually??? idk OH A VAMPIRE PIRATE!!!! nocturnal extra sexy pirate still get to yo ho ho and avast ye me hearties but like all in black and you can drink ur crewmate’s blood in a gay way bc you’ve been caught out in a storm and have run out of bags from the blood bank… or i would be one of the moomins im not picky about which one if we’re talking books

Sweet/Savoury/Spicy: Mmmmmmmm so out of these, sweet goes lowest. I could leave sweet and can't take too much sweet stuff at once. Spicy and savoury is hard though...I think I'll pick savoury over spicy, just because flavour-wise, food can be so spicy that you don't really taste the rest of the foodstuff underneath yknow? It's close between spicy and savoury though.

Relationship Status: I am girlfriended! It's been a hot decade ish since I have been in a relationship, I didn't feel lacking without a partner and was quite happily single but just kind of fell into this. Sometimes you connect deeply with a friend you share a special bond with and over time decide "what if I called you my girlfriend"

It's still so new that it feels so weird to talk about like yah I have a girlfriend. ??? I have a girlfriend???

Current obsession: Every day Kaiji claws more and more of my brain and I desperately need to make my friends watch with me. That said even moreso Pluto occupies my mind to an absurd degree right now. There are 9 more days. I am walking in circles waiting for her
