I was experimenting with a new art style, so the piece is a bit messy, but I feel that also helps the tone of the piece, if you get what I mean?
I don’t really find a lot of stuff about them, which kind of surprised me (but not really considering they don’t ever really interact), but I decided to draw them anyways!

SangYao Horror(Ish) Ideas, Part Three
(with bonus SangYu)
Purge AU
Jin Guangshan is a wealthy club owner/politician who sells the addresses of his bastard children and their mothers to rich and bored purge gangs for ludicrous amounts of money.
Meng Shi was killed by one such gang but had managed to hide her son so well (after drugging him so he wouldn't try to come save her) that he survived.
As an adult, he's living in an apartment above the bar he works at.
Unbeknownst to him, the residents of another apartment down the hall are Mo Xuanyu and his mother, more names on Jin Guangshan’s list.
And unbeknownst to Jin Guangshan and his murderous cronies, the owners of the bar downstairs, one Nie Mingjue and his younger brother Nie Huaisang, are both survivalist-trained and are very protective of their turf, their employees, and the other residents of the building.
If the purge attackers manage to get away with just injuries, they'll be very lucky.
(At one point, Meng Yao gets cornered by one of the purgers who's armed with blades of several types and lengths, only for Nie Huaisang to pop up out of nowhere and beat the guy to death with a barstool, even as it breaks in the process.
Wow.
He might be in love.)
-------------
(I might have posted a snippet of this one already, I'm a little too out of it to tell.)
When Meng Yao goes to Koi Tower for the first time, it's discovered (to his surprise) that he's part yao.
A disgusted Jin Guangshan decides that banishment is too nice a punishment, but execution might get some nosy people suspicious, which could lead to people discovering the boy was his.
Not wanting Meng Yao anywhere near Koi Tower, he has Meng Yao dragged off to some falling-apart mansion of a disgraced magistrate near the border and sealed in, then offers a bounty to anyone who can kill the monster "haunting" the house.
Many try, but Meng Yao, having realized his own father is sending assassins after him, taps into his yao side in a desperate bid for survival and kills any comers.
Eventually, he's forgotten about by everyone except his father, who despises the fact that he's not dead yet.
Years later, Nie Huaisang is caught in a wild thunderstorm that blew in as he was escaping from a kidnapping party of Wens.
Terrified, exhausted, wounded, and now soaked, he ducks into the first empty house he comes across, passing out almost the moment he falls across the threshold.
The pursuing Wens, realizing where they are, see this as a bonus opportunity. Not only can they recapture the Nie heir, they can force Jin-zongzhu to owe their sect for getting rid of his little problem.
One strides forward and grabs the unconscious Nie Huaisang by the hair, but then there's a growl out of the shadows…
---------------
Thinking about a SangYao/SangYu haunted romance.
Nie Huaisang is on a trip with a bunch of other grad students (he's the only art conservationist) to a supposedly haunted temple on an island.
Being from an extremely old family well-versed in ritual, Nie Huaisang is the only one who can actually see the ghosts, and it turns out the official story (the ghosts were all plague victims) is only partially true. Yes, a plague wiped everyone out, but they all moved on.
All the ghosts that are still around arrived afterwards, when a noble notable for his womanizing started having any bastard children dumped there.
He crosses paths with Mo Xuanyu first because Mo Xuanyu just can't help being curious about this guy in particular who is so careful with and fascinated by the murals (even the not-as-good additions Mo Xuanyu himself made while he was still alive).
It scares the hell out of him when Nie Huaisang looks right at him and asks if he worked on any of them and it takes Mo Xuanyu a week to get up the nerve to make another appearance.
But while he's in hiding, his half-siblings start showing up, unable to keep themselves from being intrigued that someone has made contact with one of them.
Jin Guangyao, understandably, is one of the most suspicious of this stranger's motives, but once he's decided Nie Huaisang is harmless good company, suddenly Nie Huaisang has like 20+ ghosts vying for his attention because all they've ever had is each other and their mutual unhappiness about what their father did to all of them.
It's gonna be a weird summer. Imagine the messages sent back home to his brother.
'Hey Da-ge, having a great time studying old art, trying not to kill my fellow students, miss you. Oh, BTW, I seem to have acquired a gaggle of ghost besties/bfs/gfs. Is it okay to bring them home with me?”
---------------
Haunting AU with Huaisang being the ghost for a change.
Meng Yao as the "human" exorcist. This is his first case just out of his apprenticeship under his mother.
(There aren't any cultivation sects in this one, just powerful noble clans.)
He arrives at the seat of the Nie Clan having followed rumors and his own sense of Trouble.
His investigation turns up a nasty little conspiracy.
In this timeline, Huaisang's mama had never become er-furen (papa nie and da-furen had always intended it, but Something would always come up before they could set up a private ceremony, and then suddenly it was too late because she died in childbirth), so Huaisang was "just" the child of a concubine. When he was a toddler and it became evident that he was probably going to be sickly all his life, a handful of retainers decided to "solve" the problem of their lord and lady having to care for a pitiful child who wasn't even in line to inherit. So they lured the boy out of his room one night and took him out into the forest.
It wasn't a gentle death at all.
The pain and terror and anger warped the poor child's spirit into something unrecognizable as having previously been human.
He succeeded in killing one of his murderers, but the rest had ended up dying in a clash with another noble clan, robbing him of his revenge and leaving him too twisted and hurting to be able to communicate with his family.
Once they hear the truth Papa Nie and Da-Furen beg Meng Yao to give Huaisang relief instead of simply exorcizing him.
It's much more difficult to do, but he succeeds, and the result is a ghost who looks like the teenager Huaisang would currently be if he had lived. The lord and lady and Mingjue all insist on letting him reside in the household as a peaceful ghost, and also insist that Meng Yao feel free to use their home as a base to return to whenever he is exhausted from work or travel.
(And of course he's free to visit his mother whenever he likes.)
Naturally, this ends in an unorthodox romance because once he's free of his misery, Huaisang is a very cuddly (and halfway solid, if very chilly) ghost.
---------------
Slay the Princess AU
Feat Nie Huaisang as The Princess
Newly-legitimized Jin Guangyao as the Main Character
And Jin Guangshan as The Narrator
Jin Guangyao being forced into the position of having to kill Nie Huaisang no matter what he tries.
And some of his efforts only make things much worse for him when Nie Huaisang revives.
Because Huaisang very much doesn’t like betrayals or efforts to trick him.
The only time they get any peace is the ending where Jin Guangyao gives up and kills him immediately, followed by taking his own life after being trapped as a result.
They may be stuck together for eternity as ghosts, but it gives them time to sort out the bullshit that led them to this fate and maybe even fall for each other?

Nie Huaisang was smarter than this. Not to mention Nie Mingjue was more protective than this; it was unthinkable that he would honestly allow this farce.
Yet...
Jin Guangyu Mo Xuanyu did not understand. (He would never want to become Jin Guangyu.)
"Why?" He asked in desperation. The smell of lotus should have calmed him, as Jiang-jiejie's place, the lotus pond was the only part of Lanling where he felt safe, yet he couldn't calm down.
Being betrothed- being betrothed to Nie Huaisang, was just too nerve-wracking.
"Why?" The older boy blinked with his ridiculously pretty eyes, looking like the innocent airhead everyone believed him to be.
Mo Xuanyu knew better. He had seen what Nie Huaisang did to his bullies.
"Why are you going along with this? Why is your brother going along with this?!" It wasn't like he could offer anything to the Second Young Master of Qinghe Nie. No power, no prestige, no political influence.
He was nothing like his brothers. (He was nothing like Jin Guangyao.)
A soft smile appeared on Nie Huaisang's face, and the feeling of want hit Mo Xuanyu in the chest. He wanted Nie Huaisang. He needed him. Before, he loved him; but now, he needed him. The news must have messed with his head; before, for his own sake, he could keep himself away from the beautiful boy. But now?
It was impossible!
"Don't worry about it, A-Yu. Everything will be fine," Nie Huaisang winked from behind one of his beloved fans. (He knew that fan. The last time he had seen it was in a half-finished state on his half-brother's table.)
"You..." He started, but he didn't know how to continue. (He didn't know how could Nie Huaisang promise something like that. In his experience, nothing would ever be fine.)
Not knowing what to say, he reached out instead, grabbing the hand fluttering the fan. The movement stopped, and the obstructive object was lowered.
Nie Huaisang was just as lovely as always. He was always the prettiest being Mo Xuanyu had ever seen. (He wasn't the only one who thought that. There weren't a lot of things similar between him and his half-brother, only a small handful. It was kind of hilarious to know that their obsession with Nie Huaisang was one of them.)
"I just... I don't understand," he murmured, losing himself in the jade-like eyes that were sparkling mischievously. His betrothed (!!???!!!???) was unfairly pretty. "You have to know he just wants to get a hold on you and your brother. Then why would you accept it?!"
Nie Huaisang tapped his closed fan against his pink lips, bringing attention to it. Not that Mo Xuanyu needed anything to make him notice that lovely bow-shaped mouth. On contrary, he needed something to divert his attention to something else.
"A-Yu, we do know that," he winked. "But he doesn't know that to get a hold on us, he would have to use someone who is loyal - to him."
Oh.
Oh.
Of course Nie Mingjue wouldn't make his didi marry into the Jin sect. As the Second Young Master, it was perfectly acceptable to make the bastard son marry into his sect. He wouldn't have to-
"Oh." The sigh that left his lips involuntary was filled with emotions.
He wouldn't have to stay.
He was free.
"Oh indeed," Nie Huaisang smiled softly as if he understood what thoughts were running through Mo Xuanyu's mind. Knowing the Nie, it was more than probable. His betrothed (!!!!!!!!) was smart like that.
"So, I hope you don't have any other concerns about our marriage, Yu'er. Otherwise I would start to become concerned that you really don't want to marry to me," Nie Huaisang pouted. Mo Xuanyu knew it was fake. He knew it.
It didn't mean he wouldn't do anything to clear that sad look off of his beloved's face. (Even if it meant to share.)
(He didn't like to share. Especially not Nie Huaisang. But-)
(But.)
One hand lifted towards Nie Huaisang's face, his fingertips gently grazing along soft cheek. His skin was always so soft. Smooth and unblemished, unlike Mo Xuanyu's. Wanting to explore more, his fingers slid along the surprisingly sharp jawline, down the slender neck, across the bobbing bump at his throat, until they reached the edges of green robes. Nie Huaisang let him do as he wanted, tilting his head to allow the soft touches. His eyes were closed, lips parted, and he looked absolutely irresistible.
It was the most he touched another human being. It was the least he wanted to touch Nie Huaisang.
He had to stop then, it was already indecent, but...
Soon.
(He wondered if his brother also explored Nie Huaisang's skin before. He wondered if they did more than just that.)
(He did not want to know.)
(He desperately needed to know.)
(He wanted at least one thing as only his before he had to share. Was that too much to ask?!)
"Never," he shook his head, remembering that he didn't answer. "Somebody would have to be a huge idiot to not want to marry you!" He insisted fiercely, knowing this fact with an absolute surety.
Nie Huaisang looked surprised for a moment, a rare sight of him being caught off-guard, then he brought his fan in front of his face again, hiding the rising redness on his cheeks.
"And your father is a huge idiot to not keeping you, but his loss is my gain!"
Now it was his turn to blush. He was used to knowing his father didn't want him, it didn't even bother him anymore. (He got over it quickly. Someone else needed more time.)
But hearing that Nie Huaisang considered having him as his gain-
Hands wrapped around his waist, pulling him close to the slightly older, yet smaller male. "Aww, A-Yu," Nie Huaisang murmured into his neck. "I do want to have you as my husband, you know that, right?"
An embarrassing sound left Mo Xuanyu's mouth as emotions stabbed him through his heart. Pulling the slender body closer to him, he reassured his betrothed (HIS!!!!), "I, too, want you as my husband. Very much so."
He could feel Nie Huaisang smiling against his neck, then the puffs of his breath as he answered, "Good. That's good."
He had to agree. It was good.
(And it was going to be good. Sure, anything could happen in the future, but he would learn how to deal with anything. With Nie Huaisang as his husband, anything would be possible.)

some minor staining incident happens when NHS is hanging out with MXY (idk he falls into the lotus pond or gets tea spilled on him ) and he borrows some Jin robes and JGY sees them and gets jealous . thank you for the writing jam!
Just a little nibble of a fic this time, sorry.
------------
"I really am sorry," Jin Guangyao heard Mo Xuanyu saying from the next hallway, and inwardly braced himself to deal with whichever family member or guest his younger half-brother had pissed off this time as he got up from his seat.
When he turned the corner, however, he didn't recognize the person walking alongside A-Yu. Though wearing the sparks-amidst-snow of the family, the robes were too large in some places and too confining in others, and their hair was entirely loose -and wet- not-
Then they turned their head and he involuntarily sucked in a breath at the realization that it was Nie Huaisang.
In their-
Recovering his composure, he noticed that A-Yu was carrying a sodden bundle of green and grey that must have been the robes Huaisang was previously wearing. "What happened here?"
A-Yu visibly flinched, hunching his shoulders defensively. "It was my fault, I-"
"It was not," Huaisang cut in. "San-ge, it really wasn't his fault. One of your cousins apparently didn't realize he was hosting a visitor and thought it would be funny to trip him while he was carrying a food tray. Yu-er was kind enough to loan me some clothes while we took mine to drop off with the laundry staff."
"I- I didn't want Nie-xiong to have to walk back to his room covered in pear soup and honey," A-Yu mumbled, nervously further rumpling the clothes in his arms.
That explained the ill fit. Xuanyu had shot up taller than both of them over the summer, but had yet to fill out his new frame. Also-
Forcing himself to not let his gaze wander back to Huaisang, lest he wind up giving him a more critical once-over, he gave his younger brother a mildly approving smile. "That was quick thinking, A-Yu. Well done taking care of our guest."
Xuanyu brightened at the praise, but he didn't miss the weight in the glance his brother shot in Huaisang's direction.
Hm.
It would seem he wasn't the only one who had taken note of how well Nie Huaisang wore their family emblem, even in clothing that wasn't up to his standard level of dress.
This had the potential to get either very interesting, or very irritating, and soon.

In Memory; In Truth chapter FOUR, wherein we expand our scope just a bit:
Nie Huaisang chuckles, now. His relationship with Wei-zhenjun is decidedly different. Where Mo Xuanyu has chosen to put his faith in the god and treats him accordingly, Nie-zongzhu still treats him like an old friend. They’re casual with each other. Familiar. Nie-zongzhu finds it amusing that Wei-zhenjun ascended, but not in a malicious way. He does not worship Wei Wuxian, but has been kind enough to make offerings regardless. A favor to a friend, he says they are, and a way for him to repay Wei-zhenjun with offerings and merits, if only a little. Yawning, Mo Xuanyu looks at Nie Huaisang. “It’s so early. They’re really supposed to be here, soon?” “Lan-er-gongzi wakes at sunrise,” Nie Huaisang says. “Wei-xiong doesn’t have to sleep. We need to eat breakfast same as them. They might as well get here early.” “You want an update as soon as possible, too,” Mo Xuanyu points out. Nie Huaisang looks at him, his smile shifting into something a bit more shrewd. The thing about Nie Huaisang is that he’s foppish and whiny, incompetent and absolutely unsuited to his position. The real thing about Nie Huaisang is that’s exactly what he wants you to think, and all of that covers a calculating mind and a frankly terrifying sense of determination and a willingness to justify the means with the end, regardless of what they are. Interestingly, he’s a lot like Wei-zhenjun in some ways.
New players on the scene!!! Yes, in this AU Mo Xuanyu lives! I've been having so much fun writing him. The Mo Xuanyu I created in my brain (because we have so little of him in canon) is fun and kind and determined and willing to fuck someone up in unsavory ways if that's what it takes.
There's some stuff I haven't written yet with him that I'm really looking forward to..... once I get through the scene I've been chewing on for the last few days. Progress is being made, though, and I'm almost at the end of draft number one.
Thanks to @thewalrus-said for helping me choose which bit of this chapter to post, though admittedly I did know this would likely be the final outcome once I sent it.
Thanks to all of you for reading, and I will HOPEFULLY have this weekend free of Moving Bullshit, but we'll see!

“Would you paint me?” “Yes. Why?” The immediacy of your answer isn’t a surprise to you. Mo Xuanyu’s suffering at the hands of his family is something that you’ve made no effort to spare him from, but there are some kindnesses you can afford to grant in the dwindling time before he gives up his life.
An angsty Nie Huaisang/Mo Xuanyu character study, set in the time before Mo Xuanyu's death, through the lens of a painting.

Heya Mercy! I'm the person who made the teen!wangxian fic rec list yesterday and it wasn't until you reblogged it that I remembered YOU WROTE ONE OF MY FAVORITE FICS EVER (i.e. The Oriole Behind You) so anyways if you don't mind, I would love for you to talk a little bit about that fic. I know it's been a while since that fic was published, but how did you come up with the idea? How did you come up with the ships? What was the process like when you wrote it? How did you come up with the twists and turns?
Anyways, thanks for being awesome. Keep slaying!
Oh! Thank you so much!!!
I didn’t come up with the forced marriages part. My sister @hamliet came up with the idea of Wen Ruohan setting up all these pairings. We both adore Wangxian, Xiyao, Xuanli, Nie Mingjue/Wen Qing, and Sangyu. I’d recently written a fic with Jiang Cheng and Mianmian (Sentiment), and Xue Yang/Chang Ping (Everything But a Father), and Hamliet pointed out that Jiang Cheng and Mianmian is perfect because he always blamed the fall of Lotus Pier on Jin Zixuan and Lan Wangji defending her. If his siblings married the respective defenders, it only fits for Jiang Cheng to marry Mianmian, and I love that idea.
As for Qin Su/Wen Ning, and Su She/Jin Zixun, I’ve written them in Brothers and Sisters and I adore the respective two cinnamon rolls and enemies-to-lovers aspect to our two bitter boys (Yes, I stan Jin Zixun because if I don’t, who will?).
Hamliet asked me to write it instead, and I was all to happy to oblige. I initially set out to have a happy/cracky tone.
And then... Writing the twists and turns was really one of those things where characters take the pen and run with it. I opened with Meng Yao, and by the end of the first chapter, it was entirely different than the idea I’d had when Hamliet first texted me. A-Yao started revealing all this angst, and then Xue Yang arrived and still revealed more angst. Lan Wangji gave me even more angst with his pain in the second chapter.
I wrote it faster than most stories, and the characters just kept choosing where to go. Some plot points remained unchanged: Wangxian had to have their questionable ‘first time,’ Xuanli needed to have Jin Ling. When I began to realize how many characters were having kids and that it wasn’t realistic... that’s when I side-eyed Meng Yao and realized it would make perfect sense for him to have slipped a potion in Qin Su and Jiang Yanli’s food.
Jiang Yanli as the one orchestrating the rebellion was a surprise, but I really liked the idea of the gentle but brave Yanli as the driving force. She may be nice and sweet, but she’s incredibly brave in the novel, and I think she’s the type to risk everything for her son, just like she did for Wei Wuxian at Nightless City.
I’ve always felt a little less comfortable with Songxiao, but diving into the stoic Song Lan’s feelings was really fun to try out and led to the surprising and humorous (to me) reveal at the end that he and Xiao Xingchen had never actually defined their romantic feelings before.
I think I was able to write it so quickly in part because this story was a great retreat during the tumultuous Spring of 2020. A comforting distraction from the outer hellscape. And... everything just kept falling into place based on how the characters worked out.
Thank you for the ask – it’s been really fun to remember. :)

Sangyu, "Change of plans, you need to stay alive."
send me a character/pairing + a prompt, and I'll write a three-ish sentence fic!
It's been maybe over ten years since Huaisang let himself make a decision without thinking of the long game, let himself make a decision simply because he couldn't bear the obvious next move. Nonetheless, he lets his eyes drift shut as he sips at his wine, and says, "I've changed my mind. You need to stay alive." He holds up his hand to preempt the argument and says, "I'll figure out another plan, A-Yu, you just worry about yourself. Who would I drink with if anything happened to you, ah?"
With a light, tinkling laugh, Huaisang opens his eyes. The place setting across from him is still empty, the cup upside down. The porcelain is cold when he lowers his hand and sets it on the cup.
"I've changed my mind," he whispers again.
Mo Xuanyu, of course, does not answer.

Short-Fic
(with the influences he’s had in his life, is it really a surprise Mo Xuanyu turns out a bit yandere?)
------------
Mo Xuanyu is the kind of kid who's always kept his head down.
He's not the kind to hide behind pleasing people like his brother and he doesn't smirk and snap and snarl like Xue Yang. He just stays quiet and makes himself as small as possible.
But oh, he will fully admit he's got the same rage in him that they do, and when he's introduced to demonic cultivation, he takes to curses like a tiger to water.
Nobody can prove he's behind the rash of misfortunes that fall on certain members of the sect -and why would they even try when Xue Yang and his much more immediate threat is right there?- but the number of "mysterious accidents" has definitely gone up.
And then he meets Nie Huaisang.
Here's a young master from another sect who doesn't treat him like an idiot or with polite distant disdain like most of the people around him do. Nie Huaisang instead notices him watching and waves him over with a smile.
"Hello! You're Yao-ge's brother, aren't you? I can't decide which of these books has a better story, maybe you could help me choose?"
A young master who wants his opinion.
And genuinely seems to take his comments under consideration.
It's almost instantaneously addicting, the heady feeling of being treated like he matters.
And the fact that none of the other disciples are stupid enough to try and hit him in front of a visiting young master certainly doesn't hurt either.
So Mo Xuanyu finds himself lingering close to Nie Huaisang as much as possible.
His brother doesn't approve. This isn't a surprise, for a number of reasons that Mo Xuanyu keeps his mouth shut about.
But Jin Guangyao also doesn't order him to stay away, so he keeps stealing as much of Nie Huaisang's time and attention as he can get away with.
When Nie Mingjue dies and Nie Huaisang seems to fall apart, Mo Xuanyu becomes busier with his curse work, the rage constantly simmering under his skin finding a new source.
There are a lot of people who will just say anything about his grieving friend(?), and, well, that just can't be left unaddressed.
His brother finally catches him at it, and Mo Xuanyu braces himself for a dressing down at minimum.
But Jin Guangyao just walks away as if he's seen nothing.
Oh. It seems they''ve finally found a subject they fully understand each other on.
As the usage of demonic cultivation begins to take a toll on his mind, Mo Xuanyu realizes that Nie Huaisang is wearing a mask too, like his own quietness or his brother's smiles.
That first glimpse of the anger underneath when someone insults the memory of his lost brother is…
Beautiful.
He fits himself into the cracks of the mask as a confidant, careful never to widen them too much. The contrast between the gentle fondness Nie Huaisang gives him and the sharp-edged ire he carefully hides from everyone else soothes the storm of madness building inside him.
He'd do anything to keep it.
Anything at all.
Even if that were to someday mean never letting Nie Huaisang leave Koi Tower again.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV), 魔道祖师 - 墨香铜臭 | Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Major Character Death Relationships: Mò Xuányǔ/Niè Huáisāng Characters: Niè Huáisāng, Mò Xuányǔ Additional Tags: Canonical Character Death, Angst, two people with incompatible fates, and how can you leave a legacy when your last act was to give it up, also just go with the timeline, stuff happening during the timeskip is a little fucky on chronologic anyway Summary:
The Jin were vipers but Xuanyu had an innocence along with the looks he inherited. Something different and rare and ultimately, incredibly fragile.
"Why would you care about drawing me, of all people? I'm no one."
"Because everyone deserves to be remembered. Because there is a beauty in almost all things, yourself included." Huaisang had only meant it as a superficial line, something to keep his mouth and the conversation busy while his mind concentrated on committing Mo Xuanyu's features to parchment.
"Ha." There was no bitterness to Mo Xuanyu's voice, just the flat tone of stating fact. "I doubt it."
